“我是你父亲亚伯拉罕的 神;

你不要怕,因为我与你同在;

Isaac Settles in Gerar

26 Now there was (A)a famine in the land, besides the previous famine that had occurred in the days of Abraham. So Isaac went to Gerar, to (B)Abimelech king of the Philistines. The Lord (C)appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; [a](D)stay in the land of which I shall tell you. Sojourn in this land and (E)I will be with you and (F)bless you, for (G)to you and to your [b]descendants I will give all these lands, and I will establish (H)the oath which I swore to your father Abraham. (I)I will multiply your [c]descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give your [d]descendants all these lands; and (J)by your [e]descendants all the nations of the earth [f]shall be blessed; because Abraham [g](K)obeyed Me and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes and My laws.”

So Isaac [h]lived in Gerar. When the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, “(L)She is my sister,” for he was (M)afraid to say, “my wife,” thinking, “[i]the men of the place might kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is (N)beautiful.” It came about, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out through a window, and saw, and behold, Isaac was caressing his wife Rebekah. Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, certainly she is your wife! How then did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” And Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘I might die on account of her.’” 10 (O)Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.” 11 So Abimelech charged all the people, saying, “He who (P)touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”

12 Now Isaac sowed in that land and [j]reaped in the same year a hundredfold. And (Q)the Lord blessed him, 13 and the man (R)became rich, and continued to grow [k]richer until he became very [l]wealthy; 14 for (S)he had possessions of flocks [m]and herds and a great household, so that the Philistines envied him. 15 Now (T)all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines stopped up [n]by filling them with earth. 16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are [o](U)too powerful for us.” 17 And Isaac departed from there and camped in the valley of Gerar, and [p]settled there.

Quarrel over the Wells

18 Then Isaac dug again the wells of water which [q]had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham; and he [r]gave them the same names which his father had [s]given them. 19 But when Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found there a well of [t]flowing water, 20 the herdsmen of Gerar (V)quarreled with the herdsmen of Isaac, saying, “The water is ours!” So he named the well [u]Esek, because they contended with him. 21 Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over it too, so he named it [v]Sitnah. 22 He moved away from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it; so he named it [w]Rehoboth, for he said, “[x](W)At last the Lord has made [y]room for us, and we will be (X)fruitful in the land.”

23 Then he went up from there to (Y)Beersheba. 24 The Lord (Z)appeared to him the same night and said,

(AA)I am the God of your father Abraham;
(AB)Do not fear, for I am with you.
I (AC)will bless you, and multiply your [z]descendants,
For the sake of My servant Abraham.”

25 So he built an (AD)altar there and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug a well.

Covenant with Abimelech

26 Then (AE)Abimelech came to him from Gerar [aa]with his adviser Ahuzzath and Phicol the commander of his army. 27 Isaac said to them, “(AF)Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?” 28 They said, “We see plainly (AG)that the Lord has been with you; so we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us, even between [ab]you and us, and let us make a covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you [ac]and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the (AH)blessed of the Lord.’” 30 Then (AI)he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. 31 In the morning they arose early and [ad](AJ)exchanged oaths; then Isaac sent them away and they departed from him in peace. 32 Now it came about on the same day, that Isaac’s servants came in and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.” 33 So he called it Shibah; therefore the name of the city is (AK)Beersheba to this day.

34 When Esau was forty years old (AL)he [ae]married Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite; 35 and (AM)they [af]brought grief to Isaac and Rebekah.

26 And there was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines, unto Gerar. And Jehovah appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; and I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these lands; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth [a]be blessed; because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws. And Isaac dwelt in Gerar: and the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, My wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon. And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife. And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die because of her. 10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might easily have lain with thy wife, and thou wouldest have brought guiltiness upon us. 11 And Abimelech charged all the people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

12 And Isaac sowed in that land, and found in the same year a hundredfold: and Jehovah blessed him. 13 And the man waxed great, and grew more and more until he became very great: 14 and he had possessions of flocks, and possessions of herds, and a great household: and the Philistines envied him. 15 Now all the wells which his father’s servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped, and filled with earth. 16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we. 17 And Isaac departed thence, and encamped in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them. 19 And Isaac’s servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of [b]springing water. 20 And the herdsmen of Gerar strove with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well [c]Esek, because they contended with him. 21 And they digged another well, and they strove for that also: and he called the name of it [d]Sitnah. 22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it [e]Rehoboth; and he said, For now Jehovah hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

23 And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba. 24 And Jehovah appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake. 25 And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of Jehovah, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac’s servants digged a well.

26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his friend, and Phicol the captain of his host. 27 And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore are ye come unto me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you? 28 And they said, We saw plainly that Jehovah was with thee: and we said, Let there now be an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee, 29 that thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of Jehovah. 30 And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink. 31 And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace. 32 And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac’s servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water. 33 And he called it Shibah: therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba unto this day.

34 And when Esau was forty years old he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite: 35 and they were [f]a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.

Isaac Lies to Abimelech

26 Now there was a time of hunger in the land, besides the time of hunger that happened during Abraham’s life. So Isaac went to the town of Gerar to see Abimelech king of the Philistines. The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, “Don’t go down to Egypt, but live in the land where I tell you to live. Stay in this land, and I will be with you and bless you. I will give you and your descendants all these lands, and I will keep the oath I made to Abraham your father. I will give you many descendants, as hard to count as the stars in the sky, and I will give them all these lands. Through your descendants all the nations on the earth will be blessed. I will do this because your father Abraham obeyed me. He did what I said and obeyed my commands, my teachings, and my rules.”

So Isaac stayed in Gerar. His wife Rebekah was very beautiful, and the men of that place asked Isaac about her. Isaac said, “She is my sister,” because he was afraid to tell them she was his wife. He thought they might kill him so they could have her.

Isaac lived there a long time. One day as Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out his window, he saw Isaac holding his wife Rebekah tenderly. Abimelech called for Isaac and said, “This woman is your wife. Why did you say she was your sister?”

Isaac said to him, “I was afraid you would kill me so you could have her.”

10 Abimelech said, “What have you done to us? One of our men might have had sexual relations with your wife. Then we would have been guilty of a great sin.”

11 So Abimelech warned everyone, “Anyone who touches this man or his wife will be put to death.”

Isaac Becomes Rich

12 Isaac planted seed in that land, and that year he gathered a great harvest. The Lord blessed him very much, 13 and he became rich. He gathered more wealth until he became a very rich man. 14 He had so many slaves and flocks and herds that the Philistines envied him. 15 So they stopped up all the wells the servants of Isaac’s father Abraham had dug. (They had dug them when Abraham was alive.) The Philistines filled those wells with dirt. 16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Leave our country because you have become much more powerful than we are.”

17 So Isaac left that place and camped in the Valley of Gerar and lived there. 18 Long before this time Abraham had dug many wells, but after he died, the Philistines filled them with dirt. So Isaac dug those wells again and gave them the same names his father had given them. 19 Isaac’s servants dug a well in the valley, from which a spring of water flowed. 20 But the herdsmen of Gerar argued with them and said, “This water is ours.” So Isaac named that well Argue because they argued with him. 21 Then his servants dug another well. When the people also argued about it, Isaac named that well Fight. 22 He moved from there and dug another well. No one argued about this one, so he named it Room Enough. Isaac said, “Now the Lord has made room for us, and we will be successful in this land.”

23 From there Isaac went to Beersheba. 24 The Lord appeared to him that night and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Don’t be afraid, because I am with you. I will bless you and give you many descendants because of my servant Abraham.” 25 So Isaac built an altar and worshiped the Lord there. He also made a camp there, and his servants dug a well.

26 Abimelech came from Gerar to see Isaac. He brought with him Ahuzzath, who advised him, and Phicol, the commander of his army. 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to see me? You were my enemy and forced me to leave your country.”

28 They answered, “Now we know that the Lord is with you. Let us swear an oath to each other. Let us make an agreement with you 29 that since we did not hurt you, you will not hurt us. We were good to you and sent you away in peace. Now the Lord has blessed you.”

30 So Isaac prepared food for them, and they all ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them away, and they left in peace.

32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had dug, saying, “We found water in that well.” 33 So Isaac named it Shibah[a] and that city is called Beersheba even now.

34 When Esau was forty years old, he married two Hittite women—Judith daughter of Beeri and Basemath daughter of Elon. 35 These women brought much sorrow to Isaac and Rebekah.
