以撒出生

21 耶和华照着他所说的眷顾撒拉，耶和华实现了他对撒拉的应许。 2 亚伯拉罕年老，到　神对他说的那所定的时候，撒拉怀了孕，给他生了一个儿子。 3 亚伯拉罕给撒拉所生的儿子起名叫以撒。 4 以撒出生后第八日，亚伯拉罕遵照　神所吩咐的，为以撒行割礼。 5 他儿子以撒出生的时候，亚伯拉罕年一百岁。 6 撒拉说：“　神使我欢笑，凡听见的人必与我一同欢笑”， 7 又说：“谁能预先对亚伯拉罕说，撒拉要乳养孩子呢？因为在他年老的时候，我为他生了一个儿子。”

8 孩子渐渐长大，就断了奶。以撒断奶的那一天，亚伯拉罕摆设丰盛的宴席。

夏甲和以实玛利被逐

9 那时，撒拉看见埃及人夏甲为亚伯拉罕所生的儿子戏笑， 10 就对亚伯拉罕说：“你把这使女和她儿子赶出去！因为这使女的儿子不可与我的儿子以撒一同承受产业。” 11 亚伯拉罕为这事非常忧愁，因为关乎他的儿子。 12 　神对亚伯拉罕说：“你不必为这孩子和你的使女忧愁。撒拉对你说的话，你都要听从；因为从以撒生的，才要称为你的后裔。 13 至于使女的儿子，我也必使他成为一国，因为他是你的后裔。”

14 亚伯拉罕清早起来，拿饼和一皮袋水，给了夏甲，搭在她肩上，把她和孩子一起送走。夏甲就走了，但她却在别是巴的旷野流浪。 15 皮袋的水用完了，夏甲就把孩子放在一棵小树下， 16 自己走开约有一箭之远，相对而坐，说：“我不忍心看见孩子死”。她就坐在对面，放声大哭。 17 　神听见孩子的声音，　神的使者就从天上呼叫夏甲说：“夏甲，你为何这样呢？不要害怕，　神已经听见孩子在那里的声音了。 18 起来！把孩子扶起来，用你的手握住他，因我必使他成为大国。” 19 　神开了夏甲的眼睛，她就看见一口水井。她就去，把皮袋装满了水，给孩子喝。

20 　神与这孩子同在，他就渐渐长大，住在旷野，成了一个弓箭手。 21 他住在巴兰的旷野；他母亲从埃及地为他娶了一个妻子。

亚伯拉罕与亚比米勒立约

22 那时候，亚比米勒和他的将军非各对亚伯拉罕说：“凡你所做的事，　神都与你同在。 23 我愿你如今在这里指着　神对我起誓，不要亏待我和我的儿子，以及我的子孙。我怎样忠诚待你，你也要照样忠诚待我和你所寄居的这地。” 24 亚伯拉罕说：“我愿意起誓。”

25 先前，亚比米勒的仆人霸占了一口水井，亚伯拉罕为这事责备亚比米勒。 26 亚比米勒说：“我不知道谁做了这事，你也没有告诉我，我到今日才听到。” 27 亚伯拉罕把羊和牛给了亚比米勒，二人就彼此立约。 28 亚伯拉罕把七只小母羊另放在一处。 29 亚比米勒对亚伯拉罕说：“你把这七只小母羊另放一处是什么意思呢？” 30 他说：“你要从我手里接受这七只小母羊，作我挖了这口井的证据。” 31 所以他给那地方起名叫别是巴[a]，因为他们二人在那里起了誓。 32 他们在别是巴立了约，亚比米勒就和他的将军非各起身回非利士人的地去了。 33 亚伯拉罕就在别是巴种了一棵柳树，在那里求告耶和华—永恒　神的名。 34 亚伯拉罕在非利士人的地寄居了许多日子。

Isaac Is Born

21 (A)Then the Lord took note of Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had [a]promised. 2 (B)So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at (C)the appointed time of which God had spoken to him. 3 Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, (D)Isaac. 4 Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was (E)eight days old, as God had commanded him. 5 Now Abraham was (F)one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 Sarah said, “God has made (G)laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh [b]with me.” 7 And she said, “(H)Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”

8 The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.

Sarah Turns against Hagar

9 Now Sarah saw (I)the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, [c](J)mocking. 10 Therefore she said to Abraham, “(K)Drive out this maid and her son, for the son of this maid shall not be an heir with my son [d]Isaac.” 11 (L)The matter [e]distressed Abraham greatly because of his son. 12 But God said to Abraham, “[f]Do not be distressed because of the lad and your maid; whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her, for (M)through Isaac [g]your descendants shall be named. 13 And of (N)the son of the maid I will make a nation also, because he is your [h]descendant.” 14 So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a [i]skin of water and gave them to Hagar, putting them on her shoulder, and gave her the boy, and sent her away. And she departed and wandered about in the wilderness of Beersheba.

15 When the water in the skin was used up, she [j]left the boy under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went and sat down opposite him, about a bowshot away, for she said, “Do not let me [k]see the boy die.” And she sat opposite him, and (O)lifted up her voice and wept. 17 God (P)heard the lad crying; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter with you, Hagar? (Q)Do not fear, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him by [l]the hand, (R)for I will make a great nation of him.” 19 Then God (S)opened her eyes and she saw (T)a well of water; and she went and filled the [m]skin with water and gave the lad a drink.

20 (U)God was with the lad, and he grew; and he [n]lived in the wilderness and became an archer. 21 (V)He [o]lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

Covenant with Abimelech

22 Now it came about at that time that (W)Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, spoke to Abraham, saying, “(X)God is with you in all that you do; 23 now therefore, (Y)swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my offspring or with my posterity, but according to the kindness that I have shown to you, you shall show to me and to the land in which you have sojourned.” 24 Abraham said, “I swear it.” 25 But Abraham [p]complained to Abimelech because of the well of water which the servants of Abimelech (Z)had seized. 26 And Abimelech said, “I do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, nor did I hear of it [q]until today.”

27 Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and (AA)the two of them made a covenant. 28 Then Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves. 29 Abimelech said to Abraham, “What do these seven ewe lambs mean, which you have set by themselves?” 30 He said, “You shall take these seven ewe lambs from my hand so that it may be a (AB)witness to me, that I dug this well.” 31 Therefore he called that place (AC)Beersheba, because there the two of them took an oath. 32 So they made a covenant at Beersheba; and Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, arose and returned to the land of the Philistines. 33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there (AD)he called on the name of the Lord, the (AE)Everlasting God. 34 And Abraham sojourned (AF)in the land of the Philistines for many days.

The Birth of Isaac

21 Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah(A) as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.(B) 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son(C) to Abraham in his old age,(D) at the very time God had promised him.(E) 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac[a](F) to the son Sarah bore him. 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him,(G) as God commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old(H) when his son Isaac was born to him.

6 Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter,(I) and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” 7 And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”(J)

Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away

8 The child grew and was weaned,(K) and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast. 9 But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham(L) was mocking,(M) 10 and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman(N) and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”(O)

11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.(P) 12 But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring[b] will be reckoned.(Q) 13 I will make the son of the slave into a nation(R) also, because he is your offspring.”

14 Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar.(S) He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.(T)

15 When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” And as she sat there, she[c] began to sob.(U)

17 God heard the boy crying,(V) and the angel of God(W) called to Hagar from heaven(X) and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid;(Y) God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.(Z)”

19 Then God opened her eyes(AA) and she saw a well of water.(AB) So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.

20 God was with the boy(AC) as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer. 21 While he was living in the Desert of Paran,(AD) his mother got a wife for him(AE) from Egypt.

The Treaty at Beersheba

22 At that time Abimelek(AF) and Phicol the commander of his forces(AG) said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do.(AH) 23 Now swear(AI) to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants.(AJ) Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you.”(AK)

24 Abraham said, “I swear it.”

25 Then Abraham complained to Abimelek about a well of water that Abimelek’s servants had seized.(AL) 26 But Abimelek said, “I don’t know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today.”

27 So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelek, and the two men made a treaty.(AM) 28 Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock, 29 and Abimelek asked Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?”

30 He replied, “Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness(AN) that I dug this well.(AO)”

31 So that place was called Beersheba,[d](AP) because the two men swore an oath(AQ) there.

32 After the treaty(AR) had been made at Beersheba,(AS) Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces(AT) returned to the land of the Philistines.(AU) 33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree(AV) in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord,(AW) the Eternal God.(AX) 34 And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines(AY) for a long time.
