12 那時，希律王下手殘害教會的一些人， 2 殺了約翰的哥哥雅各。 3 他見這樣做能取悅猶太人，便又在除酵節期間拘捕了彼得， 4 把他關在監裡，由四班衛兵，每班四人輪流看守，想等逾越節[a]過後當眾懲辦他。 5 彼得被囚期間，教會都迫切地為他向上帝禱告。
彼得神奇出獄
6 在被希律提審前一夜，彼得被兩條鐵鏈鎖著睡在兩個衛兵中間，門外警衛森嚴。 7 忽然，有一位主的天使站在彼得身旁，監牢內一片光明，天使拍他的肋旁，把他叫醒，說：「趕快起來！」鐵鏈就從他手上脫落下來。 8 天使對他說：「束上腰帶，穿好鞋子。」彼得一一照辦。天使又說：「披上外衣，跟我來！」 9 他跟著天使走出牢房，不知道這一切都是真的，還以為自己看到了異象。 10 他們一路穿過第一道和第二道守衛，來到通往城裡的鐵門，那門竟自動打開了。他們就出來，走過一條街之後，天使便離開了彼得。
11 彼得這才如夢初醒，說：「現在我確定，主派了天使來救我脫離希律的魔掌，不讓猶太人的期望得逞。」 12 他清醒後，便到約翰·馬可的母親瑪麗亞家，很多人正聚集在那裡禱告。
13 彼得在外面敲門，有一個叫羅大的婢女出來應門。 14 她聽出是彼得的聲音，喜出望外，竟然沒有開門就跑進去告訴大家：「彼得在門外！」 15 他們說：「你一定瘋了。」她堅持說：「是真的！」他們就說：「是他的天使吧！」
16 彼得不住地敲門。他們開門看見他，都大吃一驚！ 17 彼得擺手示意他們安靜，然後把主怎樣領他出獄的經過告訴大家，又說：「把這事告訴雅各和其他弟兄姊妹。」交待完了，他便離開那裡，往其他地方去了。
18 天亮後，監獄的守衛發現彼得不見了，頓時一片騷動。 19 希律派人四處搜捕，一無所獲，於是親自審問看守彼得的衛兵，下令處決他們。後來希律離開猶太，下到凱撒利亞，並住在那裡。
希律的下場
20 希律對泰爾和西頓的人非常惱火。於是，他們聯合起來去見他，先取得宮廷總管伯拉斯都的支持，然後向他求和，因為他們兩地需要從他的轄區獲得糧食。
21 到了約定的日子，希律穿上王袍，坐在寶座上向眾人致詞。 22 致詞完畢，眾人齊聲高呼：「這是神明在說話，不是凡人在說話！」 23 希律沒有把榮耀歸給上帝，主的天使立刻懲罰他，他當場被蟲子咬死了。
24 上帝的道日見興旺，越傳越廣。
25 巴拿巴和掃羅把款項送到以後，就帶著約翰·馬可從耶路撒冷回去。

12 Por aquel tiempo el rey Herodes[a] echó mano a algunos que pertenecían a la iglesia para maltratarlos. 2 Hizo matar(A) a espada a Jacobo[b], el hermano de Juan(B).
3 Y viendo que esto agradaba a los judíos(C), hizo arrestar también a Pedro. Esto sucedió durante los días[c] de los Panes sin Levadura[d](D). 4 Habiéndolo arrestado, lo puso en la cárcel, entregándolo a cuatro grupos[e] de soldados(E) para que lo custodiaran, con la intención de llevarlo ante el pueblo después de la Pascua(F). 5 Así pues, Pedro era custodiado en la cárcel, pero la iglesia hacía oración ferviente a Dios por él.
6 Esa misma noche, cuando Herodes estaba a punto de venir a buscarlo, Pedro estaba durmiendo entre dos soldados, sujeto con dos cadenas(G); y unos guardias delante de la puerta custodiaban la cárcel. 7 De repente se le apareció(H) un ángel del Señor(I), y una luz brilló en la celda; y el ángel tocó a Pedro en el costado, y lo despertó diciéndole: «Levántate pronto». Y las cadenas se cayeron de las manos de Pedro(J). 8 «Vístete y ponte[f] las sandalias», le dijo* el ángel. Así lo hizo, y el ángel añadió: «Envuélvete en tu manto y sígueme».
9 Y saliendo, Pedro lo seguía, y no sabía que lo que hacía el ángel era de verdad, sino que creía ver una visión(K). 10 Cuando habían pasado la primera y la segunda guardia, llegaron a la puerta de hierro que conduce a la ciudad, la cual se les abrió(L) por sí misma. Entonces salieron y siguieron por una calle, y de repente el ángel se apartó de él. 11 Cuando Pedro volvió en sí(M), dijo: «Ahora sé en verdad que el Señor ha enviado a Su ángel, y me ha rescatado(N) de la mano de Herodes y de todo lo que esperaba el pueblo de los judíos».
12 Al darse cuenta de esto, fue a la casa de María, la madre de Juan, llamado también Marcos(O), donde muchos estaban reunidos y oraban(P). 13 Cuando llamó a la puerta de la entrada, una sirvienta(Q) llamada Rode salió a ver quién era[g]. 14 Al reconocer la voz de Pedro, de alegría(R) no abrió la puerta, sino que corrió adentro y anunció que Pedro estaba a la puerta. 15 «¡Estás loca!», le dijeron ellos. Pero ella insistía en que así era. Y ellos decían: «Es su ángel(S)».
16 Pero Pedro continuaba llamando; y cuando ellos abrieron, lo vieron y se asombraron. 17 Y haciéndoles señal con la mano(T) para que guardaran silencio, les contó cómo el Señor lo había sacado de la cárcel. Y les dijo: «Informen de estas cosas a Jacobo[h](U) y a los hermanos(V)». Entonces salió, y se fue a otro lugar.
18 Cuando se hizo de día, hubo un alboroto no pequeño entre los soldados sobre qué[i] habría sido de Pedro. 19 Herodes, después de buscarlo y no encontrarlo, interrogó a los guardias y ordenó que los llevaran para matarlos(W). Después de esto Herodes descendió de Judea a Cesarea(X), y se quedó allí por un tiempo.
Muerte de Herodes
20 Herodes estaba muy enojado con los de Tiro y de Sidón(Y). Pero ellos, de común acuerdo se presentaron ante él, y habiéndose ganado a Blasto, camarero del rey, pedían paz, pues su región era abastecida por el territorio del rey(Z). 21 El día señalado, Herodes, vestido con ropa real, se sentó en la tribuna y comenzó a hablarles. 22 Y la gente gritaba: «¡Voz de un dios y no de un hombre es esta!». 23 Al instante un ángel del Señor(AA) lo hirió, por no haber dado la gloria a Dios; y Herodes murió[j] comido de gusanos.
24 Pero la palabra del Señor crecía y se multiplicaba(AB).
25 Bernabé y Saulo(AC) regresaron de[k] Jerusalén después de haber cumplido su misión[l](AD), llevando consigo a Juan, llamado también Marcos(AE).

Chapter 12
Herod’s Persecution of the Christians.[a] 1 About that time King Herod laid hands upon some members of the church to harm them. 2 He had James, the brother of John,[b] killed by the sword, 3 [c]and when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (It was [the] feast of Unleavened Bread.) 4 He had him taken into custody and put in prison under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each. He intended to bring him before the people after Passover. 5 Peter thus was being kept in prison, but prayer by the church was fervently being made to God on his behalf.(A)
6 On the very night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter, secured by double chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while outside the door guards kept watch on the prison. 7 Suddenly the angel of the Lord stood by him and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and awakened him, saying, “Get up quickly.” The chains fell from his wrists. 8 The angel said to him, “Put on your belt and your sandals.” He did so. Then he said to him, “Put on your cloak and follow me.” 9 So he followed him out, not realizing that what was happening through the angel was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. 10 They passed the first guard, then the second, and came to the iron gate leading out to the city, which opened for them by itself. They emerged and made their way down an alley, and suddenly the angel left him. 11 Then Peter recovered his senses and said, “Now I know for certain that [the] Lord sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people had been expecting.” 12 When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who is called Mark, where there were many people gathered in prayer.(B) 13 When he knocked on the gateway door, a maid named Rhoda came to answer it. 14 She was so overjoyed when she recognized Peter’s voice that, instead of opening the gate, she ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the gate. 15 They told her, “You are out of your mind,” but she insisted that it was so. But they kept saying, “It is his angel.” 16 But Peter continued to knock, and when they opened it, they saw him and were astounded. 17 He motioned to them with his hand to be quiet and explained [to them] how the Lord had led him out of the prison, and said, “Report this to James[d] and the brothers.” Then he left and went to another place. 18 At daybreak there was no small commotion among the soldiers over what had become of Peter.(C) 19 Herod, after instituting a search but not finding him, ordered the guards tried and executed. Then he left Judea to spend some time in Caesarea.
Herod’s Death. 20 [e]He had long been very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, who now came to him in a body. After winning over Blastus, the king’s chamberlain, they sued for peace because their country was supplied with food from the king’s territory. 21 On an appointed day, Herod, attired in royal robes, [and] seated on the rostrum, addressed them publicly. 22 The assembled crowd cried out, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” 23 At once the angel of the Lord struck him down because he did not ascribe the honor to God, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last. 24 But the word of God continued to spread and grow.(D)
Mission of Barnabas and Saul. 25 After Barnabas and Saul completed their relief mission, they returned to Jerusalem,[f] taking with them John, who is called Mark.(E)

- 12:1–19 Herod Agrippa ruled Judea A.D. 41–44. While Luke does not assign a motive for his execution of James and his intended execution of Peter, the broad background lies in Herod’s support of Pharisaic Judaism. The Jewish Christians had lost the popularity they had had in Jerusalem (Acts 2:47), perhaps because of suspicions against them traceable to the teaching of Stephen.
- 12:2 James, the brother of John: this James, the son of Zebedee, was beheaded by Herod Agrippa ca. A.D. 44.
- 12:3, 4 Feast of Unleavened Bread…Passover: see note on Lk 22:1.
- 12:17 To James: this James is not the son of Zebedee mentioned in Acts 12:2, but is James, the “brother of the Lord” (Gal 1:19), who in Acts 15; 21 is presented as leader of the Jerusalem Christian community. He left and went to another place: the conjecture that Peter left for Rome at this time has nothing to recommend it. His chief responsibility was still the leadership of the Jewish Christian community in Palestine (see Gal 2:7). The concept of the great missionary effort of the church was yet to come (see Acts 13:1–3).
- 12:20–23 Josephus gives a similar account of Herod’s death that occurred in A.D. 44. Early Christian tradition considered the manner of it to be a divine punishment upon his evil life. See 2 Kgs 19:35 for the figure of the angel of the Lord in such a context.
- 12:25 They returned to Jerusalem: many manuscripts read “from Jerusalem,” since Acts 11:30 implies that Paul and Barnabas are already in Jerusalem. This present verse could refer to a return visit or subsequent relief mission.

Peter’s Miraculous Escape From Prison
12 It was about this time that King Herod(A) arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. 2 He had James, the brother of John,(B) put to death with the sword.(C) 3 When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews,(D) he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread.(E) 4 After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.(F)
5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.(G)
6 The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains,(H) and sentries stood guard at the entrance. 7 Suddenly an angel(I) of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.(J)
8 Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. 9 Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.(K) 10 They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself,(L) and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.
11 Then Peter came to himself(M) and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me(N) from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.”
12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark,(O) where many people had gathered and were praying.(P) 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door.(Q) 14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed(R) she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”
15 “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”(S)
16 But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. 17 Peter motioned with his hand(T) for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James(U) and the other brothers and sisters(V) about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.
18 In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. 19 After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed.(W)
Herod’s Death
Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea(X) and stayed there. 20 He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon;(Y) they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply.(Z)
21 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. 22 They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” 23 Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel(AA) of the Lord struck him down,(AB) and he was eaten by worms and died.
24 But the word of God(AC) continued to spread and flourish.(AD)
Barnabas and Saul Sent Off
25 When Barnabas(AE) and Saul had finished their mission,(AF) they returned from[a] Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.(AG)
