3 (A)А ето народите, които Господ остави, за да изпита чрез тях Израил, всички тези, които не бяха влизали във всичките ханаански битки.
2 Остави ги само за да знаят и да се научат на бой поне тези от поколенията на израилтяните, които от по-рано не са знаели. Остави:
3 (B)петимата началници на филистимците и всички ханаанци, сидонци и евейци, които живеят в Ливанската планина, от планината Ваал-ермон до прохода на Емат.
4 (C)Те служеха, за да бъде изпитан Израил чрез тях и да се разбере ще слушат ли заповедите, които Господ беше заповядал на бащите им чрез Моисей.
5 (D)Също така израилтяните се заселиха между ханаанците, хетите, аморейците, ферезейците, евейците и йевусейците;
6 (E)и вземаха дъщерите им за жени, даваха дъщерите си на синовете им и служеха на боговете им.
УПРАВЛЕНИЕ НА СЪДИИТЕ В ИЗРАИЛ
Първи съдия – Готониил
7 (F)И израилтяните извършиха зло пред Господа, като забравяха Господа, своя Бог, и служеха на ваалимите и на ашерите[a].
8 (G)Затова гневът на Господа пламна против Израил и Той ги предаде на месопотамския цар Хусанрисатаим; и израилтяните бяха под властта на Хусанрисатаим осем години.
9 (H)А когато израилтяните извикаха към Господа, Той въздигна избавител на израилтяните, който ги спаси – Готониил, син на Кенез, по-младия брат на Халев.
10 (I)Дух Господен дойде върху него и той беше съдия над Израил. Излезе и на бой и Господ предаде в ръката му месопотамския цар Хусанрисатаим; и ръката му надделя против Хусанрисатаим.
11 Тогава земята беше спокойна четиридесет години. И Готониил, Кенезовият син, умря.
Втори съдия – Аод
12 (J)Пак израилтяните извършиха зло пред Господа; и Той укрепи моавския цар Еглон против Израил – вследствие на злото, което израилтяните извършиха пред Господа.
13 (K)Еглон събра при себе си амонците и амаличаните и отиде, порази Израил и завладя Града на палмите.
14 (L)И израилтяните бяха под властта на моавския цар Еглон осемнадесет години.
15 (M)А когато израилтяните извикаха към Господа, Той им въздигна за избавител Аод, син на вениаминеца Гира, мъж левак. По него израилтяните пратиха подарък на моавския цар Еглон.
16 Аод си направи меч, остър и от двете страни, дълъг един лакът, и го опаса под връхната си дреха на дясното си бедро.
17 И така, той поднесе подаръка на моавския цар Еглон. А Еглон беше много пълен човек.
18 И като поднесе подаръка и изпрати обратно хората, които носеха подаръка,
19 (N)Аод се върна от пограничните камъни[b], които са при Галгал, и каза: Имам да ти казвам нещо тайно, царю. А царят му отговори: Мълчи. И отпрати навън всички, които стояха при него.
20 Тогава Аод се приближи към него; а царят седеше сам в лятната си горна стая. Аод каза: Имам дума от Бога за тебе. Тогава царят стана от стола си.
21 А Аод протегна лявата си ръка и като измъкна меча от страната на дясното си бедро, го заби в корема му
22 дотам, че и дръжката влезе след желязото, а острието на меча излезе отзад. Аод не извади меча, защото толкова навътре беше влязло желязото, че тлъстината скри дръжката на меча.
23 Тогава Аод излезе през преддверието, затвори след себе си вратата на горната стая и я заключи.
24 Когато той излезе, дойдоха слугите на Еглон и като видяха, че вратата на горната стая беше заключена, си казаха: Вероятно царят е по нужда в лятната стая.
25 Но въпреки че чакаха, докато ги хвана срам, той не отваряше вратата на горната стая. Затова слугите взеха ключ, отвориха вратата и видяха, че господарят им лежеше мъртъв на земята.
26 А докато те се бавеха, Аод избяга; премина пограничните камъни и се спаси в Сеирот.
27 (O)И когато дойде, засвири с тръба в Ефремовата хълмиста земя и израилтяните слязоха с него от хълмистата земя, а той беше начело.
28 (P)Аод им каза: Вървете след мене, защото Господ ви предаде неприятелите ви, моавците. И те отидоха след него и като превзеха бродовете на Йордан към моавската страна, не оставиха да премине нито един човек.
29 Тогава поразиха десет хиляди моавски мъже, всички едри и здрави; не се спаси нито един.
30 (Q)Така в онова време Моав беше покорѐн от Израил. Тогава на земята имаше спокойствие осемдесет години.
Трети съдия – Самегар
31 (R)След Аод настана времето на Самегар, Анатовия син, който с един волски остен изби шестстотин мъже от филистимците; той също избави Израил.

The Lord Tests Israel
3 These are the nations the Lord left in order to test all those in Israel who had experienced none of the wars in Canaan.(A) 2 This was to teach the future generations of the Israelites how to fight in battle, especially those who had not fought before. 3 These nations included the five rulers(B) of the Philistines(C) and all of the Canaanites, the Sidonians,(D) and the Hivites(E) who lived in the Lebanese mountains from Mount Baal-hermon as far as the entrance to Hamath.[a] 4 The Lord left them to test Israel, to determine if they would keep the Lord’s commands he had given their ancestors through Moses.(F) 5 But they settled among the Canaanites, Hethites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. 6 The Israelites took their daughters as wives for themselves, gave their own daughters to their sons, and worshipped their gods.(G)
Othniel, the First Judge
7 The Israelites did what was evil in the Lord’s sight; they forgot the Lord their God(H) and worshipped the Baals and the Asherahs. 8 The Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and he sold them to King Cushan-rishathaim[b] of Aram-naharaim,[c](I) and the Israelites served him for eight years.
9 The Israelites cried out to the Lord.(J) So the Lord raised up Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s youngest brother,(K) as a deliverer(L) to save the Israelites. 10 The Spirit of the Lord came on him, and he judged Israel. Othniel went out to battle, and the Lord handed over King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram to him, so that Othniel overpowered him. 11 Then the land had peace for(M) forty years, and Othniel son of Kenaz died.
Ehud
12 The Israelites again did what was evil in the Lord’s sight. He gave King Eglon of Moab(N) power over Israel, because they had done what was evil in the Lord’s sight. 13 After Eglon convinced the Ammonites and the Amalekites to join forces with him, he attacked and defeated Israel and took possession of the City of Palms.[d](O) 14 The Israelites served King Eglon of Moab for eighteen years.
15 Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord, and he raised up Ehud son of Gera, a left-handed(P) Benjaminite,[e] as a deliverer for them. The Israelites sent him with the tribute(Q) for King Eglon of Moab.
16 Ehud made himself a double-edged sword forty-five centimetres long.[f] He strapped it to his right thigh under his clothes 17 and brought the tribute to King Eglon of Moab, who was an extremely fat man. 18 When Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he dismissed the people who had carried it. 19 At the carved images near Gilgal he returned and said, ‘King Eglon, I have a secret message for you.’ The king said, ‘Silence! ’ and all his attendants left him. 20 Then Ehud approached him while he was sitting alone in his upstairs room where it was cool. Ehud said, ‘I have a message from God for you,’ and the king stood up from his throne. 21 Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and plunged it into Eglon’s belly. 22 Even the handle went in after the blade, and Eglon’s fat closed in over it, so that Ehud did not withdraw the sword from his belly. And the waste came out.[g] 23 Ehud escaped by way of the porch, closing and locking the doors of the upstairs room behind him.
24 Ehud was gone when Eglon’s servants came in. They looked and found the doors of the upstairs room locked and thought he was relieving himself[h] in the cool room. 25 The servants waited until they became embarrassed and saw that he had still not opened the doors of the upstairs room. So they took the key and opened the doors – and there was their lord lying dead on the floor!
26 Ehud escaped while the servants waited. He passed the Jordan near the carved images and reached Seirah. 27 After he arrived, he sounded the ram’s horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came down with him from the hill country, and he became their leader. 28 He told them, ‘Follow me, because the Lord has handed over your enemies, the Moabites, to you.’ So they followed him, captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over.(R) 29 At that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all stout and able-bodied men. Not one of them escaped. 30 Moab became subject to Israel that day, and the land had peace for eighty years.
Shamgar
31 After Ehud, Shamgar son of Anath became judge. He also delivered Israel, striking down six hundred Philistines with a cattle prod.

3 These are the nations the Lord left to test(A) all those Israelites who had not experienced any of the wars in Canaan 2 (he did this only to teach warfare to the descendants of the Israelites who had not had previous battle experience): 3 the five(B) rulers of the Philistines,(C) all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites(D) living in the Lebanon mountains from Mount Baal Hermon(E) to Lebo Hamath.(F) 4 They were left to test(G) the Israelites to see whether they would obey the Lord’s commands, which he had given their ancestors through Moses.
5 The Israelites lived(H) among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites,(I) Hivites and Jebusites.(J) 6 They took their daughters(K) in marriage and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.(L)
Othniel
7 The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord; they forgot the Lord(M) their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.(N) 8 The anger of the Lord burned against Israel so that he sold(O) them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim(P) king of Aram Naharaim,[a](Q) to whom the Israelites were subject for eight years. 9 But when they cried out(R) to the Lord, he raised up for them a deliverer,(S) Othniel(T) son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, who saved them. 10 The Spirit of the Lord came on him,(U) so that he became Israel’s judge[b] and went to war. The Lord gave Cushan-Rishathaim(V) king of Aram(W) into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him. 11 So the land had peace(X) for forty years,(Y) until Othniel son of Kenaz(Z) died.
Ehud
12 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord,(AA) and because they did this evil the Lord gave Eglon king of Moab(AB) power over Israel. 13 Getting the Ammonites(AC) and Amalekites(AD) to join him, Eglon came and attacked Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms.[c](AE) 14 The Israelites were subject to Eglon king of Moab(AF) for eighteen years.
15 Again the Israelites cried out to the Lord, and he gave them a deliverer(AG)—Ehud(AH), a left-handed(AI) man, the son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with tribute(AJ) to Eglon king of Moab. 16 Now Ehud(AK) had made a double-edged sword about a cubit[d] long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing. 17 He presented the tribute(AL) to Eglon king of Moab, who was a very fat man.(AM) 18 After Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way those who had carried it. 19 But on reaching the stone images near Gilgal he himself went back to Eglon and said, “Your Majesty, I have a secret message for you.”
The king said to his attendants, “Leave us!” And they all left.
20 Ehud then approached him while he was sitting alone in the upper room of his palace[e](AN) and said, “I have a message from God for you.” As the king rose(AO) from his seat, 21 Ehud reached with his left hand, drew the sword(AP) from his right thigh and plunged it into the king’s belly. 22 Even the handle sank in after the blade, and his bowels discharged. Ehud did not pull the sword out, and the fat closed in over it. 23 Then Ehud went out to the porch[f]; he shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them.
24 After he had gone, the servants came and found the doors of the upper room locked. They said, “He must be relieving himself(AQ) in the inner room of the palace.” 25 They waited to the point of embarrassment,(AR) but when he did not open the doors of the room, they took a key and unlocked them. There they saw their lord fallen to the floor, dead.
26 While they waited, Ehud got away. He passed by the stone images and escaped to Seirah. 27 When he arrived there, he blew a trumpet(AS) in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went down with him from the hills, with him leading them.
28 “Follow me,” he ordered, “for the Lord has given Moab,(AT) your enemy, into your hands.(AU)” So they followed him down and took possession of the fords of the Jordan(AV) that led to Moab; they allowed no one to cross over. 29 At that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all vigorous and strong; not one escaped. 30 That day Moab(AW) was made subject to Israel, and the land had peace(AX) for eighty years.
Shamgar
31 After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath,(AY) who struck down six hundred(AZ) Philistines(BA) with an oxgoad. He too saved Israel.
