2 ^(A)В двайсетата година на цар Артаксеркса, през месец нисан, имаше пред него вино. Аз взех виното и подадох на царя, и, сякаш, не бях тъжен пред него.

²Но царят ме попита: защо ти е тъжно лицето? Ти не си болен, такова нещо няма, а навярно имаш тъга на сърце. Аз се много уплаших

³^(B)и казах на царя: да е жив царят навеки! Как да ми не бъде тъжно лицето, когато градът, домът, дето са гробовете на отците ми, е запустял, и портите му са с огън изгорени!

⁴И царят ми рече: а какво желаеш? Аз се помолих на Бога небесни

⁵и отговорих на царя: ако е угодно на царя, и ако твоят раб е намерил благоволение пред лицето ти, то прати ме в Иудея, в града, дето са гробовете на отците ми, за да го иззидам.

⁶^(C)И рече ми царят и царицата, която седеше до него: колко време ще трае пътят ти, и кога ще се върнеш? И царят благоволи да ме прати, след като определих времето.

⁷Тогава казах на царя: ако благоволи царят, нека ми даде писмо до задречните областеначалници, да ми дават пропуск, докато стигна до Иудея,

⁸^(D)и писмо до Асафа, пазителя на царските гори, да ми даде дървета за вратите на крепостта, що е при Божия дом, и за градските стени, и за къщата, в която да живея. И царят ми даде, понеже благодейната ръка на моя Бог беше над мене.

⁹Като стигнах при задречните областеначалници, предадох им царските писма. А царят беше пратил с мене военни началници с конници.

¹⁰^(E)Като чуха това Саваналат, Хоронит и Товия, роб амонитски, стана им твърде неприятно, че е дошъл човек да се грижи за доброто на синовете Израилеви.

¹¹И пристигнах в Иерусалим. И престоях там три дни,

¹²па станах нощем с няколко души, които бяха при мене, и не казах никому, какво моят Бог ми е турил на сърце да сторя за Иерусалим; а добиче нямаше с мене никакво, освен онова, на което яздех.

¹³Тъй преминах нощем през Долински порти пред Змейски извор към Гноищни порти и разгледах разрушените стени на Иерусалим и изгорелите му с огън порти.

¹⁴^(F)И дойдох до Изворни порти и до царския водоем, но там нямаше място да мине добичето, което беше под мене;

¹⁵и се върнах назад по дола нощем и разглеждах стените и, като минах пак през Долински порти, върнах се.

¹⁶А началниците не знаеха, къде ходих и какво правех: дотогава не бях нищо открил ни на иудеите, нито на свещениците, ни на първенците, нито на началниците, нито на другите работници.

¹⁷И казах им: виждате в каква неволя се намираме; Иерусалим запустял, и портите му с огън изгорени; да идем и да съградим стените на Иерусалим, та да не бъдем занапред в такова унижение.

¹⁸И разказах им, как благодейната ръка на моя Бог беше над мене, – и за думите на царя, които ми говори. И те казаха: ще градим, – и укрепиха ръцете си за добро дело.

¹⁹^(G)Като чуха това Саваналат, Хоронит и Товия, роб амонитски и Гешем Арабец, присмиваха ни се и думаха с презрение: каква е тая работа, която вършите? Не числите ли вече да се бунтувате против царя?

²⁰^(H)Аз им отговорих и рекох: Бог небесни, Той ще ни помогне, и ние, раби Негови, ще почнем да зидаме, а за вас няма да има ни дял, ни право, ни спомен в Иерусалим.

2 În luna Nisan, anul al douăzecilea al împăratului Artaxerxe^(A), pe când vinul era înaintea lui, am^(B) luat vinul şi l-am dat împăratului. Niciodată nu fusesem trist înaintea lui. ²Împăratul mi-a zis: „Pentru ce ai faţa tristă? Totuşi nu eşti bolnav; nu poate fi decât o întristare^(C) a inimii.” Atunci m-a apucat o mare frică ³şi am răspuns împăratului: „Trăiască împăratul^(D) în veac! Cum să n-am faţa tristă când cetatea^(E) în care sunt mormintele părinţilor mei este nimicită şi porţile ei sunt arse de foc?” ⁴Şi împăratul mi-a zis: „Ce ceri?” Eu m-am rugat Dumnezeului cerurilor ⁵şi am răspuns împăratului: „Dacă găseşte cu cale împăratul şi dacă robul tău îi este plăcut, trimite-mă în Iuda, la cetatea mormintelor părinţilor mei, ca s-o zidesc din nou.” ⁶Împăratul, lângă care şedea şi împărăteasa, mi-a zis atunci: „Cât va ţine călătoria ta şi când te vei întoarce?” Împăratul a găsit cu cale să mă lase să plec şi i-am hotărât o^(F) vreme. ⁷Apoi am zis împăratului: „Dacă găseşte împăratul cu cale, să mi se dea scrisori pentru dregătorii de dincolo de Râu, ca să mă lase să trec şi să intru în Iuda, ⁸şi o scrisoare pentru Asaf, păzitorul pădurii împăratului, ca să-mi dea lemne să fac grinzi pentru porţile cetăţuii de lângă casă^(G), pentru zidul cetăţii şi pentru casa în care voi locui.” Împăratul mi-a dat aceste scrisori, căci^(H) mâna cea bună a Dumnezeului meu era peste mine. ⁹M-am dus la dregătorii de dincolo de Râu şi le-am dat scrisorile împăratului, care pusese să mă însoţească nişte mai-mari ai oastei şi nişte călăreţi. ¹⁰Sanbalat, Horonitul, şi Tobia, slujitorul amonit, când au auzit lucrul acesta, nu le-a plăcut deloc că venea un om să caute binele copiilor lui Israel.

Neemia îmbărbătează pe popor

¹¹Am^(I) ajuns la Ierusalim şi am rămas acolo trei zile. ¹²După aceea, m-am sculat noaptea cu câţiva oameni, fără să fi spus cuiva ce-mi pusese Dumnezeul meu în inimă să fac pentru Ierusalim. Nu era cu mine nicio altă vită, afară de vita pe care călăream. ¹³Am ieşit noaptea pe Poarta^(J) Văii şi m-am îndreptat spre Izvorul Balaurului şi spre Poarta Gunoiului, uitându-mă cu băgare de seamă la zidurile dărâmate^(K) ale Ierusalimului şi la porţile lui arse de foc. ¹⁴Am trecut pe la Poarta^(L) Izvorului şi pe la Iazul Împăratului, şi nu era loc pe unde să treacă vita care era sub mine. ¹⁵M-am suit noaptea pe la^(M) pârâu şi m-am uitat iarăşi cu băgare de seamă la zid. Apoi am intrat pe Poarta Văii, şi astfel m-am întors. ¹⁶Dregătorii nu ştiau unde fusesem şi ce făceam. Până în clipa aceea nu spusesem nimic iudeilor, nici preoţilor, nici mai-marilor, nici dregătorilor, nici vreunuia din cei ce vedeau de treburi. ¹⁷Le-am zis atunci: „Vedeţi starea nenorocită în care suntem! Ierusalimul este dărâmat şi porţile sunt arse de foc. Veniţi să zidim iarăşi zidul Ierusalimului şi să nu mai fim de^(N) ocară!” ¹⁸Şi le-am istorisit cum mâna^(O) cea bună a Dumnezeului meu fusese peste mine şi ce cuvinte îmi spusese împăratul. Ei au zis: „Să ne sculăm şi să zidim!” Şi s-au întărit^(P) în această hotărâre bună. ¹⁹Sanbalat, Horonitul, Tobia, slujitorul amonit, şi Gheşem, Arabul, fiind înştiinţaţi, şi-au bătut joc^(Q) de noi şi ne-au dispreţuit. Ei au zis: „Ce faceţi voi acolo? Vă răsculaţi^(R) împotriva împăratului?” ²⁰Şi eu le-am răspuns: „Dumnezeul cerurilor ne va da izbânda. Noi, robii Săi, ne vom scula şi vom zidi, dar voi^(S), n-aveţi nici parte, nici drept, nici aducere-aminte în Ierusalim.”

Artaxerxes Sends Nehemiah to Jerusalem

2 In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes,^(A) when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before, ²so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.”

I was very much afraid, ³but I said to the king, “May the king live forever!^(B) Why should my face not look sad when the city^(C) where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?^(D)”

⁴The king said to me, “What is it you want?”

Then I prayed to the God of heaven, ⁵and I answered the king, “If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.”

⁶Then the king^(E), with the queen sitting beside him, asked me, “How long will your journey take, and when will you get back?” It pleased the king to send me; so I set a time.

⁷I also said to him, “If it pleases the king, may I have letters to the governors of Trans-Euphrates,^(F) so that they will provide me safe-conduct until I arrive in Judah? ⁸And may I have a letter to Asaph, keeper of the royal park, so he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel^(G) by the temple and for the city wall and for the residence I will occupy?” And because the gracious hand of my God was on me,^(H) the king granted my requests.^(I) ⁹So I went to the governors of Trans-Euphrates and gave them the king’s letters. The king had also sent army officers and cavalry^(J) with me.

¹⁰When Sanballat^(K) the Horonite and Tobiah^(L) the Ammonite official heard about this, they were very much disturbed that someone had come to promote the welfare of the Israelites.^(M)

Nehemiah Inspects Jerusalem’s Walls

¹¹I went to Jerusalem, and after staying there three days^(N) ¹²I set out during the night with a few others. I had not told anyone what my God had put in my heart to do for Jerusalem. There were no mounts with me except the one I was riding on.

¹³By night I went out through the Valley Gate^(O) toward the Jackal^[a] Well and the Dung Gate,^(P) examining the walls^(Q) of Jerusalem, which had been broken down, and its gates, which had been destroyed by fire. ¹⁴Then I moved on toward the Fountain Gate^(R) and the King’s Pool,^(S) but there was not enough room for my mount to get through; ¹⁵so I went up the valley by night, examining the wall. Finally, I turned back and reentered through the Valley Gate. ¹⁶The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, because as yet I had said nothing to the Jews or the priests or nobles or officials or any others who would be doing the work.

¹⁷Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire.^(T) Come, let us rebuild the wall^(U) of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.^(V)” ¹⁸I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me^(W) and what the king had said to me.

They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.

¹⁹But when Sanballat^(X) the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official and Geshem^(Y) the Arab heard about it, they mocked and ridiculed us.^(Z) “What is this you are doing?” they asked. “Are you rebelling against the king?”

²⁰I answered them by saying, “The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding,^(AA) but as for you, you have no share^(AB) in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it.”
