1 (A)И биде слово Господне към Иона, син Аматиев:
2 (B)„стани, иди в Ниневия, град голям, и проповядвай в него, защото злодеянията му достигнаха до Мене“.
3 И стана Иона да побегне в Тарсис от лицето Господне; дойде в Иопия и намери кораб, който отиваше за Тарсис, плати за превоз и влезе в него, за да отплува с тях в Тарсис от лицето Господне.
4 (C)Но Господ подигна в морето силен вятър, и стана в морето голяма буря, и корабът насмалко оставаше да се разбие.
5 (D)Уплашиха се корабниците; те викаха всеки към своя бог и почнаха да хвърлят в морето товара от кораба, за да му олекне от него; а Иона бе слязъл в дъното на кораба, бе легнал и дълбоко заспал.
6 Дойде при него началникът на кораба и му рече: „защо спиш? стани, извикай към твоя Бог; може би, Бог ще си спомни за нас, и ние не ще загинем“.
7 И рекоха един другиму: „нека хвърлим жребие, за да узнаем, за кого ни постига тая беда“. Хвърлиха жребие, и жребието се падна на Иона.
8 Тогава му рекоха: „кажи ни, за кого ни постигна тая беда? Какво е твоето занятие, и отде идеш ти? де е твоята земя, и от кой народ си?“
9 (E)Той им рече: „аз съм евреин, почитам Господа, Бога на небесата, Който направи морето и сушата“.
10 Тогава човеците се уплашиха твърде много и му рекоха: „защо направи това?“ – защото те узнаха, че той бяга от лицето Господне, – както той сам им бе обадил.
11 И рекоха му: „какво да направим с тебе, за да утихне морето за нас?“ Защото морето все се вълнуваше.
12 Тогава той им рече: „вземете ме и ме хвърлете в морето, – и морето ще утихне за вас, защото знам, че заради мене ви постигна тая голяма буря“.
13 Ала тия човеци почнаха да гребат усилно, за да стигнат на суша, но не можаха, защото морето все повече вилнееше против тях.
14 Тогава извикаха към Господа и рекоха: „молим Те, Господи, да не загинем поради душата на тоя човек, и да ни не зачетеш невинна кръв; защото Ти, Господи, си направил, което е Тебе угодно!“
15 (F)И взеха Иона, та го хвърлиха в морето; и утихна морето от своята ярост.
16 И тия човеци се уплашиха от Господа твърде много, принесоха жертви Господу и дадоха оброци.

1 Jehová dirigió su palabra a Jonás hijo de Amitai y le dijo: 2 «Levántate y ve a Nínive, aquella gran ciudad, y clama contra ella, porque su maldad ha subido hasta mí.»
3 Pero Jonás se levantó para huir de la presencia de Jehová a Tarsis, y descendió a Jope, donde encontró una nave que partía para Tarsis; pagó su pasaje, y se embarcó para irse con ellos a Tarsis, lejos de la presencia de Jehová. 4 Pero Jehová hizo soplar un gran viento en el mar, y hubo en el mar una tempestad tan grande que se pensó que se partiría la nave. 5 Los marineros tuvieron miedo y cada uno clamaba a su dios. Luego echaron al mar los enseres que había en la nave, para descargarla de ellos. Mientras tanto, Jonás había bajado al interior de la nave y se había echado a dormir. 6 Entonces el patrón de la nave se le acercó y le dijo: «¿Qué tienes, dormilón? Levántate y clama a tu Dios. Quizá tenga compasión de nosotros y no perezcamos.»
7 Entre tanto, cada uno decía a su compañero:
«Venid y echemos suertes, para que sepamos quién es el culpable de que nos haya venido este mal.»
Echaron, pues, suertes, y la suerte cayó sobre Jonás. 8 Entonces ellos le dijeron:
—Explícanos ahora por qué nos ha venido este mal. ¿Qué oficio tienes y de dónde vienes? ¿Cuál es tu tierra y de qué pueblo eres?
9 Él les respondió:
—Soy hebreo y temo a Jehová, Dios de los cielos, que hizo el mar y la tierra.
10 Aquellos hombres sintieron un gran temor y le dijeron:
—¿Por qué has hecho esto?
Pues ellos supieron que huía de la presencia de Jehová por lo que él les había contado.
11 Como el mar se embravecía cada vez más, le preguntaron:
—¿Qué haremos contigo para que el mar se nos aquiete?
12 Él les respondió:
—Tomadme y echadme al mar, y el mar se os aquietará, pues sé que por mi causa os ha sobrevenido esta gran tempestad.
13 Aquellos hombres se esforzaron por hacer volver la nave a tierra, pero no pudieron, porque el mar se embravecía cada vez más contra ellos. 14 Entonces clamaron a Jehová y dijeron: «Te rogamos ahora, Jehová, que no perezcamos nosotros por la vida de este hombre, ni nos hagas responsables de la sangre de un inocente; porque tú, Jehová, has obrado como has querido.»
15 Tomaron luego a Jonás y lo echaron al mar; y se aquietó el furor del mar. 16 Sintieron aquellos hombres gran temor por Jehová, le ofrecieron un sacrificio y le hicieron votos.
17 Pero Jehová tenía dispuesto un gran pez para que se tragara a Jonás, y Jonás estuvo en el vientre del pez tres días y tres noches.

Jonah Flees From the Lord
1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah(A) son of Amittai:(B) 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh(C) and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
3 But Jonah ran(D) away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish(E). He went down to Joppa,(F) where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.(G)
4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.(H) 5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.(I)
But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6 The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call(J) on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”(K)
7 Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.”(L) They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.(M) 8 So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”
9 He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord,(N) the God of heaven,(O) who made the sea(P) and the dry land.(Q)”
10 This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.)
11 The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”
12 “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”(R)
13 Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.(S) 14 Then they cried out to the Lord, “Please, Lord, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man,(T) for you, Lord, have done as you pleased.”(U) 15 Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.(V) 16 At this the men greatly feared(W) the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows(X) to him.
Jonah’s Prayer
17 Now the Lord provided(Y) a huge fish to swallow Jonah,(Z) and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
