2 Итъй, реших в себе си, да не дохождам при вас пак с огорчение.

²Защото ако аз ви огорчавам, то кой ще ме зарадва, ако не онзи, когото съм огорчил?

³^(A)Това същото ви и писах, та, като дойда, да ме не огорчат ония, които трябваше да ме радват; защото съм уверен във всички вас, че моята радост е радост и за всинца ви.

⁴^(B)От голяма скръб и притеснено сърце ви писах с много сълзи, не за да ви огорча, а за да познаете преголямата любов, която имам към вас.

⁵Ако ли пък някой ме е огорчил, то не мене е огорчил, а донейде, да не кажа много, всинца ви.

⁶^(C)Доста е за такъв това наказание от мнозинството;

⁷така че за вас е по-добре да му простите и да го утешите, за да не пропадне той от преголяма скръб;

⁸затова моля ви да покажете към него любов.

⁹Защото с тая цел и писах, за да узная на опит, дали във всичко сте послушни.

¹⁰А комуто вие прощавате за нещо, нему и аз прощавам; понеже и аз, ако съм простил някому нещо, простил съм за вас от лице Христово,

¹¹^(D)за да не вземе сатаната преднина над нас: защото не са ни неизвестни неговите замисли.

¹²Когато дойдох в Троада да проповядвам Христовото евангелие, и врата ми бяха отворени в име Господне,

¹³духът ми нямаше покой, понеже не намерих там моя брат Тита; а като се простих с тях, заминах за Македония.

¹⁴Но да благодарим Богу, Който всякога ни дава да тържествуваме в Христа и Който навред чрез нас проявява благоуханието, по което познаваме Самия Него.

¹⁵^(E)Защото ние сме Христово благоухание пред Бога за онези, които се спасяват, и за онези, които гинат:

¹⁶^(F)на едните сме смъртоносен дъх за смърт, а на другите – живителен дъх за живот. И кой е способен за това?

2 ¹So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you.^(A) ²For if I grieve you,^(B) who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved? ³I wrote as I did,^(C) so that when I came I would not be distressed^(D) by those who should have made me rejoice. I had confidence^(E) in all of you, that you would all share my joy. ⁴For I wrote you^(F) out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.

Forgiveness for the Offender

⁵If anyone has caused grief,^(G) he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent—not to put it too severely. ⁶The punishment^(H) inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. ⁷Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him,^(I) so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. ⁸I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. ⁹Another reason I wrote you^(J) was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.^(K) ¹⁰Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, ¹¹in order that Satan^(L) might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.^(M)

Ministers of the New Covenant

¹²Now when I went to Troas^(N) to preach the gospel of Christ^(O) and found that the Lord had opened a door^(P) for me, ¹³I still had no peace of mind,^(Q) because I did not find my brother Titus^(R) there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.^(S)

¹⁴But thanks be to God,^(T) who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma^(U) of the knowledge^(V) of him everywhere. ¹⁵For we are to God the pleasing aroma^(W) of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.^(X) ¹⁶To the one we are an aroma that brings death;^(Y) to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?^(Z) ¹⁷Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit.^(AA) On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity,^(AB) as those sent from God.^(AC)

Forgive the Sinner

⁵Now ^(E)if anyone has caused pain, ^(F)he has caused it not to me, but ^(G)in some measure—not to put it too severely—to all of you. ⁶For such a one, ^(H)this punishment by the majority is enough, ⁷so ^(I)you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. ⁸So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him. ⁹For this is why I wrote, that I might ^(J)test you and know ^(K)whether you are obedient in everything. ¹⁰Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, ¹¹so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for ^(L)we are not ignorant of his designs.

Triumph in Christ

¹²When ^(M)I came to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ, even though ^(N)a door was opened for me in the Lord, ¹³my spirit ^(O)was not at rest because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I took leave of them and went on to Macedonia.

¹⁴But ^(P)thanks be to God, who in Christ always ^(Q)leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads ^(R)the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. ¹⁵For we are the aroma of Christ to God among ^(S)those who are being saved and among ^(T)those who are perishing, ¹⁶^(U)to one a fragrance from death to death, ^(V)to the other a fragrance from life to life. ^(W)Who is sufficient for these things? ¹⁷For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God's word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.

Reaffirm Your Love

2 But I made up my mind not to grieve you with another painful visit. ²For if I cause you grief [by a well-deserved rebuke], who then provides me enjoyment but the very one whom I have made sad? ³And I ^[a]wrote this same thing to you, so that when I came, I would not be filled with sorrow by those who ought to make me glad, for I trusted in you and felt confident that my joy would be shared by all of you. ⁴For I wrote to you out of great distress and with an anguished heart, and with many tears, not to cause you sorrow but to make you realize the [overflowing] love which I have especially for you.

⁵But if ^[b]someone has caused [all this] sorrow, he has caused it not to me, but in some degree—not to put it too severely—[he has distressed and grieved] all of you. ⁶For such a one this punishment by the majority is sufficient, ⁷so instead [of further rebuke, now] you should rather [graciously] forgive and comfort and encourage him, to keep him from being overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. ⁸Therefore I urge you to reinstate him in your affections and reaffirm your ^[c]love for him. ⁹For this was my purpose in writing, to see if you would stand the test, whether you are obedient and committed to following my instruction in all things. ¹⁰If you forgive anyone anything, I too forgive [that one]; and what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of [and with the approval of] Christ, ¹¹to keep Satan from taking advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his schemes.

¹²Now when I arrived at Troas to preach the good news of Christ, even though a door [of opportunity] opened for me in the Lord, ¹³my spirit could not rest because I did not find my brother Titus there; so saying goodbye to them, I left for Macedonia.

¹⁴But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us spreads and makes evident everywhere the sweet fragrance of the knowledge of Him. ¹⁵For we are the sweet fragrance of Christ [which ascends] to God, [discernible both] among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; ¹⁶to the latter one an aroma from death to death [a fatal, offensive odor], but to the other an aroma from life to life [a vital fragrance, living and fresh]. And who is adequate and sufficiently qualified for these things? ¹⁷For we are not like many, [acting like merchants] peddling God’s word [shortchanging and adulterating God’s message]; but from pure [uncompromised] motives, as [commissioned and sent] from God, we speak [His message] in Christ in the sight of God.

2 Corinthians 2:8 The key to understanding this and other statements about love is to know that this love (the Greek word agape) is not so much a matter of emotion as it is of doing things for the benefit of another person, that is, having an unselfish concern for another and a willingness to seek the best for other believers.
