42 (A)Узна Иаков, че в Египет има жито, и рече на синовете си: какво гледате?
2 И рече: ето, чух, че в Египет имало жито; идете там и ни купете жито, за да живеем и да не умрем.
3 Десетте Иосифови братя отидоха в Египет да купят жито;
4 (B)а Вениамина, Иосифовия брат, Иаков не изпрати с братята му, защото рече: да не би да се случи с него някоя злочестина.
5 И дойдоха Израилевите синове да купят жито заедно с други, които отиваха там, защото в Ханаанската земя имаше глад.
6 (C)А началник в оная земя беше Иосиф; той и продаваше жито на всичкия тамошен народ. Братята на Иосифа дойдоха и му се поклониха с лице доземи.
7 (D)И видя Иосиф братята си и ги позна; но се престори, че ги не познава, и говореше с тях сърдито и ги попита: отде дойдохте? Те отговориха: от Ханаанската земя, за да купим храна.
8 Иосиф позна братята си, ала те го не познаха.
9 (E)И си спомни Иосиф сънищата, които бе сънувал за тях, и им рече: вие сте съгледвачи, дошли сте да огледате слабите места на тая земя.
10 Те му рекоха: не, господарю, рабите ти дойдоха да купят храна;
11 ние всички сме деца на един човек; честни хора сме; твоите раби не са бивали съгледвачи.
12 Той им отговори: не, вие сте дошли да огледате слабите места на тая земя.
13 (F)Те рекоха: ние, твоите раби, сме дванайсет братя; ние сме синове на един човек в Ханаанската земя, и ето, най-малкият се намира при баща ни, а единият се изгуби.
14 Тогава Иосиф им рече: тъкмо това ви и говорих, като ви казах: съгледвачи сте;
15 (G)ето как ще бъдете изпитани: кълна се в живота фараонов, вие няма да излезете оттук, ако не дойде тук най-малкият ви брат;
16 пратете едного от вас, и нека той доведе брата ви; а вие ще бъдете задържани; тогава ще се открие, дали говорите истина; ако ли не, кълна се в живота фараонов, вие сте съгледвачи.
17 И ги тури под стража за три дни.
18 А на третия ден Иосиф им каза: ето какво да направите, за да останете живи, защото се боя от Бога:
19 ако сте честни хора, нека един брат от вас бъде задържан в къщата, дето сте затворени; а вие идете, занесете жито за гладните си челяди;
20 (H)а най-малкия си брат доведете при мене, за да се оправдаят думите ви и да не умрете. Тъй и направиха.
21 (I)И говореха си един другиму: наистина това ни е наказание за греха против брата ни; ние видяхме, как се той душевно мъчеше, когато ни молеше, ала (го) не послушахме; затова ни и постигна тая беда.
22 (J)Рувим отговори и им рече: не думах ли ви: не грешете против детето? но вие не послушахте; ето, кръвта му се дири.
23 А те не знаеха, че Иосиф разбира; понеже си служеха с преводач.
24 Тогава (Иосиф) се оттегли от тях и заплака. Върна се при тях и говори с тях и, като взе измежду им Симеона, върза го пред очите им.
25 И заповяда Иосиф да напълнят чувалите им с жито, а среброто им да върнат всекиму в чувала, и да им дадат храна за по път. Тъй и стана с тях.
26 Те натовариха житото на ослите си и потеглиха оттам.
27 И един от тях при нощувката отвори своя чувал, за да даде храна на осела си, и видя среброто си при устата на чувала,
28 и рече на братята си: среброто ми върнато; ето го в чувала ми. Смути се сърцето им, и те с трепет думаха един другиму: какво стори Бог с нас?
29 И дойдоха при баща си Иакова в Ханаанската земя и му разказаха всичко, що се случи с тях, и рекоха:
30 началникът на оная земя приказва с нас сърдито и ни взе за съгледвачи на земята.
31 Ние му рекохме: честни люде сме: не сме съгледвачи;
32 ние сме дванайсет братя, синове на баща си; единият се изгуби, а най-малкият е сега при баща ни в Ханаанската земя.
33 А началникът на оная земя ни рече: ето как ще позная, дали сте честни люде: оставете при мене единия си брат; а вие вземете жито за гладните си челяди, идете си
34 и доведете при мене най-малкия си брат; тогава ще позная, че не сте съгледвачи, а честни люде; ще ви пусна брата ви, и вие ще можете да търгувате в тая земя.
35 (K)А когато изпразняха чувалите си, ето че всекиму възелът със среброто беше в чувала му. Като видяха възлите със среброто си, те и баща им се уплашиха.
36 (L)А баща им Иаков рече: оставихте ме без деца: Иосифа няма, и Симеона няма, а искате и Вениамина да вземете, – всичко това се струпа върху мене!
37 (M)Рувим отговори на баща си: убий двамата ми синове, ако ти го не доведа; дай го в моите ръце; аз ще ти го върна.
38 (N)Той рече: няма да иде син ми с вас, защото брат му умря, и той остана сам; ако се случи злочестина с него по пътя, в който ще отидете, ще свалите седината ми с тъга в гроба.

42 А като видя Яков, че в Египет се намира жито, Яков рече на синовете си: Защо се гледате един друг?
2 Рече още: Ето, чух, че в Египет се намира жито; слезте там та ни купете от там, за да живеем и да не измрем.
3 Тогава десетте Иосифови братя слязоха да купят жито от Египет.
4 А Яков не изпрати Вениамина, Иосифовия брат, заедно с братята му; защото думаше: Да не би да му се случи нещастие.
5 И тъй, между ония, които идеха, дойдоха и синовете на Израиля да купят; защото имаше глад и в Ханаанската земя.
6 А понеже Иосиф беше управител на земята и той беше, който продаваше на всичките люде на оная земя, затова братята на Иосифа, като дойдоха, поклониха му се с лицата си до земята.
7 А Иосиф, като видя братята си, позна ги, но се престори, като чужд на тях, говореше им грубо и им рече: От где идете? А те рекоха: От Ханаанската земя, за да купим храна.
8 (А при все, че Иосиф позна братята си, те не го познаха).
9 Тогава Иосиф, като си спомни сънищата, които беше видял за тях, рече им: Вие сте шпиони; дошли сте да съглеждате голотата на тая земя.
10 А те му казаха: Не, господарю, слугите ти дойдоха да си купят храна.
11 Ние всички сме синове на един човек, честни човеци сме, слугите ти не са шпиони.
12 Но той им рече: Не, дошли сте да съглеждате голотата на земята.
13 А те казаха: Ние, твоите слуги, сме дванадесет братя, синове на един човек в Ханаанската земя; и, ето, най-младият е днес при баща ни, а единият го няма.
14 А Иосиф им рече: Това е, което ви казах, когато рекох: Шпиони сте.
15 Ето как ще бъдете опитани: В името на Фараона*, няма да излезете от тука, ако не дойде и по-младият ви брат тука.
16 Пратете един от вас да доведе брата ви; а вие ще останете затворени догде се проверят думите ви, дали говорите истина; и ако не, в името на Фараона*, наистина вие сте шпиони.
17 И ги постави под стража за три дена.
18 А на третия ден Иосиф им рече: Това сторете и ще живеете, защото аз се боя от Бога:
19 Ако сте честни, нека остане един от вашите братя в къщата, в която сте пазени; вие идете, закарайте жито за гладните си челяди+,
20 па ми доведете най-младият си брат; така ще се докаже, че думите ви са истинни, и вие няма да умрете. И сториха така.
21 И рекоха си един на друг: Наистина сме виновни за нашия брат, гдето видяхме мъката на душата му, когато ни се молеше и ние не го послушахме; затова ни постигна туй бедствие.
22 А Рувим им отговори казвайки: Не ви ли говорих тия думи: Не съгрешавайте против детето, но вие не послушахте. Затова, вижте, кръвта му се изисква.
23 А те не знаеха, че Иосиф разбираше, защото говореха с него чрез преводач.
24 И той се оттегли от тях и плака; после, като се върна при тях, говореше им; и взе измежду тях Симеона та го върза пред очите им.
25 Тогава Иосиф заповяда да напълнят съдовете им с жито, да върнат парите на всекиго в чувала му, и да им дадат храна за из пътя; и сториха им така.
26 А те натовариха житото на ослите си и си тръгнаха от там.
27 Но когато един от тях развърза чувала си на мястото за пренощуване, за да даде храна на осела си, видя, че парите му бяха отгоре в чувала.
28 И рече на братята си: Парите ми са повърнати; наистина, вижте ги в чувала ми. Тогава сърцата им се ужасиха, и те се обръщаха с трепет един към друг и казваха: Що е това, което ни стори Бог?
29 И като дойдоха при баща си Якова, в Ханаанската земя, разказаха му всичко, което им се бе случило.
30 Рекоха: Човекът, който е господар на оная земя, ни говори грубо, и ни взе за човеци дошли да съгледат страната.
31 Но ние му казахме: Честни човеци сме, не сме шпиони;
32 дванадесет братя сме, синове на един баща*; единият се изгуби, а най-младият е днес при баща ни в Ханаанската земя.
33 И човекът, господарят на земята ни каза: Ето как ще позная дали сте честни: оставете един от вашите братя при мене и вземете жито за гладните си домочадия+ и си идете,
34 па ми доведете най-младия си брат; тогава ще позная, че не сте шпиони, а сте честни, и ще пусна брата ви, и вие ще търгувате в тая земя.
35 А като изпразваха чувалите си, ето, на всеки възела с парите му беше в чувала му; и те и баща им се уплашиха като видяха възлите с парите си.
36 Тогава баща им Яков каза: Вие ме оставихте без чада; Иосифа няма, Симеона няма, а искате и Вениамина да заведете; върху мене падна всичко това!
37 А Рувим, като говореше на баща си, рече: Убий двамата ми сина, ако не ти го доведа; предай го в моята ръка и аз пак ще ти го доведа.
38 А Яков каза: Син ми няма да слезе с вас, защото брат му умря, и само той остана; ако му се случи нещастие по пътя, по който отивате, тогава ще свалите бялата ми коса със скръб в гроба.

42 Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?
2 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.
3 And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt.
4 But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him.
5 And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
6 And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.
7 And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.
8 And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.
9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.
10 And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.
11 We are all one man's sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies.
12 And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.
13 And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.
14 And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies:
15 Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.
16 Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies.
17 And he put them all together into ward three days.
18 And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God:
19 If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses:
20 But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.
21 And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.
22 And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.
23 And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter.
24 And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes.
25 Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he unto them.
26 And they laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence.
27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack's mouth.
28 And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us?
29 And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that befell unto them; saying,
30 The man, who is the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country.
31 And we said unto him, We are true men; we are no spies:
32 We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.
33 And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone:
34 And bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffick in the land.
35 And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack: and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.
36 And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me.
37 And Reuben spake unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.
38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

Joseph’s Brothers Go to Egypt
42 When (A)Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” 2 And he said, “Indeed I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down to that place and buy for us there, that we may (B)live and not die.”
3 So Joseph’s ten brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. 4 But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, (C)“Lest some calamity befall him.” 5 And the sons of Israel went to buy grain among those who journeyed, for the famine was (D)in the land of Canaan.
6 Now Joseph was governor (E)over the land; and it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and (F)bowed down before him with their faces to the earth. 7 Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he acted as (G)a stranger to them and spoke [a]roughly to them. Then he said to them, “Where do you come from?”
And they said, “From the land of Canaan to buy food.”
8 So Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. 9 Then Joseph (H)remembered the dreams which he had dreamed about them, and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see the [b]nakedness of the land!”
10 And they said to him, “No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food. 11 We are all one man’s sons; we are honest men; your servants are not spies.”
12 But he said to them, “No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land.”
13 And they said, “Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and in fact, the youngest is with our father today, and one (I)is no more.”
14 But Joseph said to them, “It is as I spoke to you, saying, ‘You are spies!’ 15 In this manner you shall be tested: (J)By the life of Pharaoh, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here. 16 Send one of you, and let him bring your brother; and you shall be [c]kept in prison, that your words may be tested to see whether there is any truth in you; or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies!” 17 So he [d]put them all together in prison (K)three days.
18 Then Joseph said to them the third day, “Do this and live, (L)for I fear God: 19 If you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined to your prison house; but you, go and carry grain for the famine of your houses. 20 And (M)bring your youngest brother to me; so your words will be verified, and you shall not die.”
And they did so. 21 Then they said to one another, (N)“We are truly guilty concerning our brother, for we saw the anguish of his soul when he pleaded with us, and we would not hear; (O)therefore this distress has come upon us.”
22 And Reuben answered them, saying, (P)“Did I not speak to you, saying, ‘Do not sin against the boy’; and you would not listen? Therefore behold, his blood is now (Q)required of us.” 23 But they did not know that Joseph understood them, for he spoke to them through an interpreter. 24 And he turned himself away from them and (R)wept. Then he returned to them again, and talked with them. And he took (S)Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.
The Brothers Return to Canaan
25 Then Joseph (T)gave a command to fill their sacks with grain, to (U)restore every man’s money to his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. (V)Thus he did for them. 26 So they loaded their donkeys with the grain and departed from there. 27 But as (W)one of them opened his sack to give his donkey feed at the encampment, he saw his money; and there it was, in the mouth of his sack. 28 So he said to his brothers, “My money has been restored, and there it is, in my sack!” Then their hearts [e]failed them and they were afraid, saying to one another, “What is this that God has done to us?”
29 Then they went to Jacob their father in the land of Canaan and told him all that had happened to them, saying: 30 “The man who is lord of the land (X)spoke [f]roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country. 31 But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we are not spies. 32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is with our father this day in the land of Canaan.’ 33 Then the man, the lord of the country, said to us, (Y)‘By this I will know that you are honest men: Leave one of your brothers here with me, take food for the famine of your households, and be gone. 34 And bring your (Z)youngest brother to me; so I shall know that you are not spies, but that you are honest men. I will grant your brother to you, and you may (AA)trade in the land.’ ”
35 Then it happened as they emptied their sacks, that surprisingly (AB)each man’s bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid. 36 And Jacob their father said to them, “You have (AC)bereaved me: Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take (AD)Benjamin. All these things are against me.”
37 Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, “Kill my two sons if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my hands, and I will bring him back to you.”
38 But he said, “My son shall not go down with you, for (AE)his brother is dead, and he is left alone. (AF)If any calamity should befall him along the way in which you go, then you would (AG)bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave.”
