知恵を求めたソロモン
3 ソロモン王はエジプトの王（ファラオ）と同盟を結び、ファラオの娘と結婚しました。彼女をエルサレムに連れて来て、宮殿と神殿と町の城壁を建て終わるまで、ダビデの町に住まわせました。 2 そのころ、まだ神殿がなかったので、イスラエルの民は高台の祭壇でいけにえをささげていました。
3 ソロモンは主を愛し、父ダビデの教えすべてに従っていましたが、一つだけ例外は、高台でいけにえをささげ、香をたいていることでした。 4 ギブオンの丘の祭壇が最も有名で、王はそこへ出かけ、一千頭もの焼き尽くすいけにえをささげました。 5 するとその夜、神が夢のうちに現れ、「何なりと望むものを求めよ。そうすれば与えよう」と、ソロモンに語りました。
6 ソロモンは答えました。「あなたは父に、とてもよくしてくださいました。それと申しますのも、父が正直で、いつも主に忠誠を尽くし、心からご命令にお従いしたからです。あなたはまた、王位を継ぐ子を授けるという祝福を父にお与えになりました。 7 わが神、主よ。あなたは父に代わって、この私を王としてくださいました。ところが、私は右も左もわきまえない、小さな子どもと同じです。 8 しかも、あなたが自らお選びになった民の指導者として立てられました。この民はあまりにも多くて、とても数えきれません。 9 どうか、民を正しく治め、善悪をはっきり見分けるために、すぐれた判断力と聞き分ける心とをお与えください。いったいだれが、自分の力でこれほどの重い責任を果たせるでしょう。」
10 ソロモンが知恵を願い求めたので、主はことのほか喜びました。 11 そこで、こう答えました。「あなたは民を正しく治める知恵を求め、長生きすることや財産、または敵に勝つことを願わなかった。 12 したがって、望んだものを与えよう。しかも、ずば抜けた知恵を。 13 また、望まなかった財産と名誉も与えよう。あなたが生きている間、財産と名声であなたにかなう者はだれもいないだろう。 14 それだけでなく、あなたの父ダビデのようにわたしのおきてを守り、わたしに従うなら、末長く生かそう。」
15 ソロモンは、ここではっと目が覚めました。なんと、それは夢だったのです。ソロモンはエルサレムに帰ると、さっそく幕屋に入って契約の箱の前に立ち、焼き尽くすいけにえと和解のいけにえをささげました。そしてすべての家臣たちを招き、盛大な祝宴を開いたのです。
16 それからしばらくして、二人の遊女がもめ事を解決してもらおうと、王のところへやって来ました。 17-18 一人がこう訴えました。「王様、私たちは二人で同じ屋根の下に暮らしています。最近、私は子どもを産みました。三日後に、この女も産みました。 19 ところが夜中に、この女の子どもは死んだのです。寝ているうちに、この女が自分の子どもの上になり窒息させたのです。 20 するとこの女は、私の子を取って自分のそばに寝かせ、死んだ子を私の腕に抱かせたのです。 21 朝、お乳を飲ませようとすると、子どもが死んでいるではありませんか！ しかも、明るくなってからよく見ると、私の子ではないのです。」
22 もう一人の女が口をはさみました。「うそよ。死んだのは、間違いなくこの女の子どもで、生きているのが私の子です。」
「違うわ。死んだ赤ちゃんがあんたので、生きているのが私の子よ。」先の女も、負けずに言い返します。こうして二人は王の前で言い争いました。
23 そこで、王が中に入りました。「おまえたちは二人とも、生きているのが自分の子で、死んだのは相手の子だと言い張っている。 24-25 だれか、刀を持って来なさい。」刀を受け取った王は、こう言いました。「生きている赤ん坊を真っ二つにして、半分ずつ分けてやりなさい。」
26 すると、その赤ん坊のほんとうの母親は、その子を愛していたので、大声で叫びました。「王様、おやめください！ だったら、いっそその子をあの女にやってください。どうか、殺さないでください！」
ところがもう一人は、平気な顔で言い放ちました。「けっこうよ。真っ二つにでも何でもして、私のものでも、この女のものでもないようにしてください。」
27 これを聞いた王は言いました。「その子を、殺さないでくれと言った女に渡しなさい。その女こそ、ほんとうの母親だ。」
28 王のこの裁きのことは、たちまち国中に知れ渡るところとなりました。民はみな、神がソロモンにすばらしい知恵を与えたことを知って、王を畏れ敬うようになりました。

Solomon Asks for Wisdom(A)
3 Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and married(B) his daughter.(C) He brought her to the City of David(D) until he finished building his palace(E) and the temple of the Lord, and the wall around Jerusalem. 2 The people, however, were still sacrificing at the high places,(F) because a temple had not yet been built for the Name(G) of the Lord. 3 Solomon showed his love(H) for the Lord by walking(I) according to the instructions(J) given him by his father David, except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.(K)
4 The king went to Gibeon(L) to offer sacrifices, for that was the most important high place, and Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared(M) to Solomon during the night in a dream,(N) and God said, “Ask(O) for whatever you want me to give you.”
6 Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful(P) to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son(Q) to sit on his throne this very day.
7 “Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child(R) and do not know how to carry out my duties. 8 Your servant is here among the people you have chosen,(S) a great people, too numerous to count or number.(T) 9 So give your servant a discerning(U) heart to govern your people and to distinguish(V) between right and wrong. For who is able(W) to govern this great people of yours?”
10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. 11 So God said to him, “Since you have asked(X) for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment(Y) in administering justice, 12 I will do what you have asked.(Z) I will give you a wise(AA) and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. 13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not(AB) asked for—both wealth and honor(AC)—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal(AD) among kings. 14 And if you walk(AE) in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.”(AF) 15 Then Solomon awoke(AG)—and he realized it had been a dream.(AH)
He returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the Lord’s covenant and sacrificed burnt offerings(AI) and fellowship offerings.(AJ) Then he gave a feast(AK) for all his court.
A Wise Ruling
16 Now two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. 17 One of them said, “Pardon me, my lord. This woman and I live in the same house, and I had a baby while she was there with me. 18 The third day after my child was born, this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there was no one in the house but the two of us.
19 “During the night this woman’s son died because she lay on him. 20 So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I your servant was asleep. She put him by her breast and put her dead son by my breast. 21 The next morning, I got up to nurse my son—and he was dead! But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn’t the son I had borne.”
22 The other woman said, “No! The living one is my son; the dead one is yours.”
But the first one insisted, “No! The dead one is yours; the living one is mine.” And so they argued before the king.
23 The king said, “This one says, ‘My son is alive and your son is dead,’ while that one says, ‘No! Your son is dead and mine is alive.’”
24 Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword for the king. 25 He then gave an order: “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.”
26 The woman whose son was alive was deeply moved(AL) out of love for her son and said to the king, “Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!”
But the other said, “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!”
27 Then the king gave his ruling: “Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him; she is his mother.”
28 When all Israel heard the verdict the king had given, they held the king in awe, because they saw that he had wisdom(AM) from God to administer justice.

1 主なる神が、ダビデの子ソロモンを偉大な王としたので、彼は押しも押されもしないイスラエルの支配者となりました。
2-3 ソロモン王はギブオンの丘に、イスラエルの政界・宗教界の指導者だけでなく、軍の将校や裁判官たちをも召集しました。その丘の上には、主のしもべモーセが荒野を旅している時に造った幕屋（神の天幕）があったのです。 4 エルサレムには、ダビデ王が契約の箱をキルヤテ・エアリムから移した時に建てた新しい幕屋がありました。 5-6 フルの子ウリの子ベツァルエルが造った青銅の祭壇が、古い幕屋の前に置かれていました。王をはじめ一同は、その祭壇の前に集まりました。王は祭壇に、一千頭の焼き尽くすいけにえをささげました。
7 その夜、神が夢の中でソロモンに現れ、「何でも欲しいものを求めてよい。どんな願いでもかなえよう」と語りました。 8 彼は答えました。「神様、あなたは父ダビデに多くの恵みを施されました。そして今、あなたは私に王国を授けてくださいました。 9 これ以上、求めるものはありません。あなたが父ダビデへの約束を果たし、この私を、海辺の砂のように多い民の王としてくださったのですから。 10 どうか、この民を治めるのに必要な知恵と知識を私にお授けください。あなたのものである、この偉大な民を自分の力で治めることのできる者がどこにおりましょう。」
11 神はソロモンに言いました。「何よりも民の力になりたいと願っていることがよくわかった。あなたは自分のために財産や名誉、敵への復讐、さらには長寿さえ求めず、わたしの民を正しく導くための知恵と知識を求めた。 12 願いどおり、確かにその知恵と知識を与えよう。また、あなたの前にいたどの王も手にしたことのない財産と名誉をも与えよう。全世界で、あなたほど偉大な王は二度と現れないだろう。」
13 これを聞いたソロモンは幕屋を離れて丘を下り、エルサレムに帰ってイスラエルを治めました。
14 王は戦車一千四百台の大部隊を編成し、戦車を配備した町々を守る騎兵一万二千人を集めました。もちろん、騎兵の一部はエルサレムの王の身辺に配置されました。 15 ソロモン王の時代には、エルサレムで金や銀が路上の石のようにふんだんに使われ、高価な杉材がどこにでもある桑の木のように大量に用いられました。 16 王は馬の仲買人をエジプトへ送り、大量の馬を卸値で購入しました。 17 当時、エジプトでは戦車一台で銀六百シェケル（六・九キログラム）、馬一頭で銀百五十シェケル（一・七キログラム）でした。輸入した戦車や馬の多くは、ヘテ人やシリヤの王に売られました。

Solomon Asks for Wisdom(A)(B)
1 Solomon son of David established(C) himself firmly over his kingdom, for the Lord his God was with(D) him and made him exceedingly great.(E)
2 Then Solomon spoke to all Israel(F)—to the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, to the judges and to all the leaders in Israel, the heads of families— 3 and Solomon and the whole assembly went to the high place at Gibeon,(G) for God’s tent of meeting(H) was there, which Moses(I) the Lord’s servant had made in the wilderness. 4 Now David had brought up the ark(J) of God from Kiriath Jearim to the place he had prepared for it, because he had pitched a tent(K) for it in Jerusalem. 5 But the bronze altar(L) that Bezalel(M) son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made was in Gibeon in front of the tabernacle of the Lord; so Solomon and the assembly inquired(N) of him there. 6 Solomon went up to the bronze altar before the Lord in the tent of meeting and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.
7 That night God appeared(O) to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”
8 Solomon answered God, “You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me(P) king in his place. 9 Now, Lord God, let your promise(Q) to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth.(R) 10 Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead(S) this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?”
11 God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth,(T) possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, 12 therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor,(U) such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.(V)”
13 Then Solomon went to Jerusalem from the high place at Gibeon, from before the tent of meeting. And he reigned over Israel.
14 Solomon accumulated chariots(W) and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses,[a] which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem. 15 The king made silver and gold(X) as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills. 16 Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue[b]—the royal merchants purchased them from Kue at the current price. 17 They imported a chariot(Y) from Egypt for six hundred shekels[c] of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty.[d] They also exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and of the Arameans.

78 民よ、私の教えをよく聞きなさい。
私のことばに耳を傾けなさい。
2-3 先祖代々語り伝えられてきた教訓を、
たとえを使って教えよう。
4 この真実の解き明かしを聞いたなら、
あなたがたもまた、
栄光に輝く主のわざを子どもたちに説明し、
そのめざましい奇跡を語り伝えてほしい。
5 主はおきてをまずイスラエルに授け、
私たちの先祖に、それを子孫にまでも伝えよと
お命じになりました。
6 こうして、神のおきては順々に、
子から孫へと伝えられていくのです。
7 こうすれば、すべての世代の人々が神のおきてを守り、
神に希望を見いだし、
その栄光に輝く奇跡を忘れることはありません。
8 そればかりか、先祖のように、
反抗的でかたくなな者や、
神に心を明け渡そうとしない者も出ないでしょう。
9 エフライムの人々は、
十分に武装していたにもかかわらず、
いざ戦いとなると敵に背を向けて逃げ出しました。
10 神のおきてを守らず、
神の命令に従うのを拒んだからです。
11-12 先祖たちが、エジプトであれほど助けていただき、
すばらしい奇跡を見せていただいたのに、
神を忘れてしまったのです。
13 神が目の前で海を二つに分け、
その間を通らせてくださったというのに。
しかも、水は両側にせき止められたまま、
そそり立っていたというのです。
14 神は、昼は雲で、夜は火の柱で
人々をお導きになりました。
15 荒野では、岩から水を吹き出させ、
十分に飲ませてくださいました。
16 岩からほとばしり出た水は、川のように流れました。
17 それでもなお、人々は神に背き続け、
罪を犯し続けました。
18 不平ばかりで、
神の下さる食べ物では満足できず、
19-20 神ご自身に文句を言ったのです。
「神よ、水を出されたくらいですから、
もう少しましな食べ物を
頂けないものでしょうか」と。
21 このことばに、
主はどれほどお怒りになったことでしょう。
怒りの炎がイスラエルに向かって燃え上がりました。
22 親身になって心を砕いてくださる神に、
信頼しなかったからです。
23 神は、天の窓を開き、
24 天上のパンとも言うべき
マナを降らせてくださったというのに。
25 御使いの食べ物を、
十分に食べさせていただいたというのに。
26 神は東風を起こし、
激しい力で南風を引き寄せられました。
27 そのため、空から鳥の大群が落ちて来て、
ちりのように厚く、
海辺の砂のようにびっしりと敷き詰められました。
28 こうして、テントのそばに落ちた小鳥は、
29 十分に人々の食欲を満たしたのです。
人々の欲しがるものを、
神はお与えになったのです。
30 しかし、肉がまだ口にある間に、
31 神の怒りは燃え上がり、
イスラエルの屈強の若者たちがなぎ倒されました。
32 それでもなお、人々は罪を犯し続け、
神の奇跡を信じようとはしませんでした。
33 そこで神は人々の寿命を短くし、
悲惨な生涯を用意されたのです。
34 神が彼らを滅ぼされると、
ついに、人々は熱心に神に立ち返りました。
35 神こそ自分たちの岩であり、
どんな神々にもまさるお方であることを
思い出したのです。
36 しかし、その従順も口先だけで、
心からのものではありませんでした。
37 本心は遠く離れていたので、
約束もすぐに破ってしまいました。
38 それでもなお、あわれみ深い神は、
そんな彼らの罪を赦し、
絶滅にまでは追い込まれませんでした。
幾度も、怒りを押しとどめられたのです。
39 人々が朽ちていく存在にすぎず、
風のように、あわただしく去っていく身であることを、
思いやられたからです。
40 荒野をさまよっていたころ、
人々は何度反抗して、神を悲しませたことでしょう。
41 彼らは何度も背いては、
神に滅ぼされそうになりました。
こうして、自らの手で、
神の祝福をとどめてしまったのです。
42 神の力も愛も忘れ、
どのようにして敵の手から
救い出していただいたかも忘れました。
43 また、ツォアンの野でエジプト人が神罰を受け、
恐ろしい病気に冒されたことも、
44 川の水が血に変わって飲めなくなったことも、
45 エジプト全土にあぶの群れが押し寄せ、
かえるが国中にあふれたことも忘れました。
46 神はエジプト人の作物を油虫に食べさせ、
その収穫をいなごの餌にされました。
47 また、彼らのぶどうといちじくを雹で全滅させました。
48 天からの雹で家畜を、
雷によって羊の群れを打ちました。
49 神は彼らに激しい怒りを燃やし、
災難をもたらす御使いの一軍を送り込まれました。
50 神の怒りは荒馬のように駆け巡ったので、
エジプト人は次々と疫病にかかって倒れました。
51 続いて神は、エジプトの全家族から、
一家の柱となるべき長男を殺しました。
52 しかし、ご自分の民を羊の群れのように導き出し、
荒野の道を無事に進ませてくださいました。
53 神が彼らを守られたので、
彼らは恐れを感じることもありませんでした。
結局、敵は海にのみ込まれて滅びました。
54 こうして彼らは、神が特別に備えてくださった、
なだらかな丘陵の続く、祝福の地の入口まで
連れて来られたのです。
55 神はこの地に住みついている民族を追い払い、
イスラエルの各部族に、
領地を分配してくださいました。
56 しかし、これほどの恵みを受けながらも、
彼らは神に逆らい、
神の教えを守ろうとしませんでした。
57 入ろうとしている約束の地からあとずさりして、
先祖同様に神を裏切り、先の曲がった矢のように、
神が意図なさった的からそれてしまったのです。
58 また、他の神々の像を作り、
異教の祭壇を築いては、神の怒りを買いました。
59 彼らのしわざをごらんになった神の怒りは激しく、
ご自分の民をさえ、退けるまでになりました。
60 そこで、地上の住まいであったシロの宮を見限り、
61 契約の箱が奪われるのも見過ごされました。
ご自分の栄光を敵の手にお渡しになったのです。
62 神の怒りの火は燃えさかり、
イスラエルの民は虫けらのように殺されました。
63 若い男は焼き殺され、若い女は、
婚姻の歌を歌う年齢に達しないうちに死に絶えました。
64 祭司は虐殺され、その未亡人は、
夫の死を嘆く間もなく亡くなりました。
65 その時、神は眠りから覚めた人のように、
また、ぶどう酒を飲んで景気づいた勇士のように
立ち上がられました。
66 敵はあわてふためいて逃げ、
ぬぐいがたい恥をかかされたのです。
67 神はヨセフの家系のエフライム族を見放し、
68 ユダ族を選んで、シオン山をいとおしまれました。
69 そこに、山のようにそびえ立つ
不動の神殿をお建てになりました。
70 そして、ダビデをしもべとして選び、
彼を羊飼いの仕事場から、
71-72 子羊を連れた雌羊の番をしていた場所から
召し出されました。
イスラエルの羊飼いとなったダビデは、
すぐれた手腕と真心をもって、
人々を導きました。

A maskil[a] of Asaph.
1 My people, hear my teaching;(A)
listen to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth with a parable;(B)
I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
3 things we have heard and known,
things our ancestors have told us.(C)
4 We will not hide them from their descendants;(D)
we will tell the next generation(E)
the praiseworthy deeds(F) of the Lord,
his power, and the wonders(G) he has done.
5 He decreed statutes(H) for Jacob(I)
and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach their children,
6 so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,(J)
and they in turn would tell their children.
7 Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget(K) his deeds
but would keep his commands.(L)
8 They would not be like their ancestors(M)—
a stubborn(N) and rebellious(O) generation,
whose hearts were not loyal to God,
whose spirits were not faithful to him.
9 The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows,(P)
turned back on the day of battle;(Q)
10 they did not keep God’s covenant(R)
and refused to live by his law.(S)
11 They forgot what he had done,(T)
the wonders he had shown them.
12 He did miracles(U) in the sight of their ancestors
in the land of Egypt,(V) in the region of Zoan.(W)
13 He divided the sea(X) and led them through;
he made the water stand up like a wall.(Y)
14 He guided them with the cloud by day
and with light from the fire all night.(Z)
15 He split the rocks(AA) in the wilderness
and gave them water as abundant as the seas;
16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag
and made water flow down like rivers.
17 But they continued to sin(AB) against him,
rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.
18 They willfully put God to the test(AC)
by demanding the food they craved.(AD)
19 They spoke against God;(AE)
they said, “Can God really
spread a table in the wilderness?
20 True, he struck the rock,
and water gushed out,(AF)
streams flowed abundantly,
but can he also give us bread?
Can he supply meat(AG) for his people?”
21 When the Lord heard them, he was furious;
his fire broke out(AH) against Jacob,
and his wrath rose against Israel,
22 for they did not believe in God
or trust(AI) in his deliverance.
23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above
and opened the doors of the heavens;(AJ)
24 he rained down manna(AK) for the people to eat,
he gave them the grain of heaven.
25 Human beings ate the bread of angels;
he sent them all the food they could eat.
26 He let loose the east wind(AL) from the heavens
and by his power made the south wind blow.
27 He rained meat down on them like dust,
birds(AM) like sand on the seashore.
28 He made them come down inside their camp,
all around their tents.
29 They ate till they were gorged—(AN)
he had given them what they craved.
30 But before they turned from what they craved,
even while the food was still in their mouths,(AO)
31 God’s anger rose against them;
he put to death the sturdiest(AP) among them,
cutting down the young men of Israel.
32 In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;(AQ)
in spite of his wonders,(AR) they did not believe.(AS)
33 So he ended their days in futility(AT)
and their years in terror.
34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek(AU) him;
they eagerly turned to him again.
35 They remembered that God was their Rock,(AV)
that God Most High was their Redeemer.(AW)
36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,(AX)
lying to him with their tongues;
37 their hearts were not loyal(AY) to him,
they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he was merciful;(AZ)
he forgave(BA) their iniquities(BB)
and did not destroy them.
Time after time he restrained his anger(BC)
and did not stir up his full wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh,(BD)
a passing breeze(BE) that does not return.
40 How often they rebelled(BF) against him in the wilderness(BG)
and grieved him(BH) in the wasteland!
41 Again and again they put God to the test;(BI)
they vexed the Holy One of Israel.(BJ)
42 They did not remember(BK) his power—
the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,(BL)
43 the day he displayed his signs(BM) in Egypt,
his wonders(BN) in the region of Zoan.
44 He turned their river into blood;(BO)
they could not drink from their streams.
45 He sent swarms of flies(BP) that devoured them,
and frogs(BQ) that devastated them.
46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper,(BR)
their produce to the locust.(BS)
47 He destroyed their vines with hail(BT)
and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
48 He gave over their cattle to the hail,
their livestock(BU) to bolts of lightning.
49 He unleashed against them his hot anger,(BV)
his wrath, indignation and hostility—
a band of destroying angels.(BW)
50 He prepared a path for his anger;
he did not spare them from death
but gave them over to the plague.
51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt,(BX)
the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.(BY)
52 But he brought his people out like a flock;(BZ)
he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid;
but the sea engulfed(CA) their enemies.(CB)
54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land,
to the hill country his right hand(CC) had taken.
55 He drove out nations(CD) before them
and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;(CE)
he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.
56 But they put God to the test
and rebelled against the Most High;
they did not keep his statutes.
57 Like their ancestors(CF) they were disloyal and faithless,
as unreliable as a faulty bow.(CG)
58 They angered him(CH) with their high places;(CI)
they aroused his jealousy with their idols.(CJ)
59 When God heard(CK) them, he was furious;(CL)
he rejected Israel(CM) completely.
60 He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh,(CN)
the tent he had set up among humans.(CO)
61 He sent the ark of his might(CP) into captivity,(CQ)
his splendor into the hands of the enemy.
62 He gave his people over to the sword;(CR)
he was furious with his inheritance.(CS)
63 Fire consumed(CT) their young men,
and their young women had no wedding songs;(CU)
64 their priests were put to the sword,(CV)
and their widows could not weep.
65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,(CW)
as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.
66 He beat back his enemies;
he put them to everlasting shame.(CX)
67 Then he rejected the tents of Joseph,
he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;(CY)
68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,(CZ)
Mount Zion,(DA) which he loved.
69 He built his sanctuary(DB) like the heights,
like the earth that he established forever.
70 He chose David(DC) his servant
and took him from the sheep pens;
71 from tending the sheep(DD) he brought him
to be the shepherd(DE) of his people Jacob,
of Israel his inheritance.
72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart;(DF)
with skillful hands he led them.

2 1-2 さて、主イエス・キリストがもう一度来られることと、その時、一堂に集められた私たちが主にお会いすることについて、どう考えていますか。愛する皆さん。主の日はもう来たなどといううわさを耳にして、興奮したり、あわてたりしないでください。たとえ、このことについて幻を見たとか、神から特別のお告げを受けたとか言う人が現れても、また、私たちから送られたもののように偽造した手紙を見せられても、信用してはいけません。
3 どんなことを言われても、惑わされたり、だまされたりしないように気をつけなさい。なぜなら、主の日は、次の二つの現象が起こるまでは実現しないからです。まず、世をあげて神に逆らう時代が来ます。それから、反逆者である反キリスト、すなわち滅びの子が現れます。 4 彼は、神と名のつくものにはことごとく反抗し、また、礼拝の対象をすべて打ちこわします。そして神殿に入って神の座につき、自分こそ神だと宣言します。 5 このことについては、そちらに滞在中、何度も話しておいたのを覚えていますか。 6 あなたがたは、定められた時が来ると姿を現そうとする彼を、引き止めている者がだれかを知っているはずです。 7 この、反逆と滅びの子が現れるきざしは、すでにあちこちに見られます。しかし、引き止めている者が身を引くまでは、姿を現せません。
8 時が来れば、いよいよこの反キリストが現れることになりますが、主イエスが来られ、御口の息と輝きによって、彼を滅ぼしてしまわれます。 9 この反キリストは悪魔の手先であり、悪魔のあらゆる力を与えられてやって来ます。不思議なわざを見せては人々をだまし、力ある奇跡を行う者であるかのように見せかけるのです。 10 こうして、真理を拒んで滅びへの道を走る者たちを、すっかりとりこにします。その人たちは、真理を信じることも愛することもせず、救われようなどとは考えもしませんでした。 11 そこで神は、彼らがだまされるままに放っておかれるのです。 12 真理を信じないで、罪を犯すことを楽しんでいた彼らに、さばきが下るのは当然です。
13 しかし、主に愛されている皆さん。あなたがたのことを考えると、神に感謝せずにはいられません。なぜなら、神は初めから、あなたがたを救おうとしてお選びになり、聖霊の働きと、真理に対するあなたがたの信仰によって、きよめてくださったからです。 14 神は、私たちの語った福音（イエス・キリストによる救いの知らせ）によってあなたがたを選び分かち、主イエス・キリストの栄光に招いてくださったのです。
15 皆さん。これらのことを深く心にとめて、しっかり立ちなさい。そして、私たちが説教や手紙で伝えた教えを守りなさい。

The Man of Lawlessness
2 Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ(A) and our being gathered to him,(B) we ask you, brothers and sisters, 2 not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter(C)—asserting that the day of the Lord(D) has already come.(E) 3 Don’t let anyone deceive you(F) in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion(G) occurs and the man of lawlessness[a] is revealed,(H) the man doomed to destruction. 4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God(I) or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.(J)
5 Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things?(K) 6 And now you know what is holding him back,(L) so that he may be revealed at the proper time. 7 For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back(M) will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed,(N) whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth(O) and destroy by the splendor of his coming.(P) 9 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan(Q) works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders(R) that serve the lie, 10 and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing.(S) They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.(T) 11 For this reason God sends them(U) a powerful delusion(V) so that they will believe the lie(W) 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.(X)
Stand Firm
13 But we ought always to thank God for you,(Y) brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits[b](Z) to be saved(AA) through the sanctifying work of the Spirit(AB) and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you(AC) to this through our gospel,(AD) that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm(AE) and hold fast to the teachings[c] we passed on to you,(AF) whether by word of mouth or by letter.
16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father,(AG) who loved us(AH) and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage(AI) your hearts and strengthen(AJ) you in every good deed and word.
