Jesus lärjungar plockar ax på sabbatsdagen

12 En sabbat[a] en tid senare vandrade Jesus och hans lärjungar genom några sädesfält. Hans lärjungar var hungriga och började rycka av ax och äta.

2 Men fariseerna fick se det och sa: ”Titta hur dina lärjungar gör sådant som inte är tillåtet[b] på sabbaten.”

3 Då sa Jesus till dem: ”Har ni aldrig läst vad David gjorde när han och hans män blev hungriga?[c] 4 Han gick in i Guds hus, och både han och hans män åt av skådebröden som bara prästerna får äta. De bröt också mot lagen. 5 Och har ni aldrig läst i lagen att prästerna som tjänstgör i templet vanhelgar sabbaten och är ändå oskyldiga? 6 Men jag säger er, att här finns en som är större än templet. 7 Om ni förstod vad som menas med orden: ’Jag vill hellre ha nåd än slaktoffer’[d], så skulle ni inte döma oskyldiga. 8 För Människosonen är Herre över sabbaten.”

Jesus botar en man på sabbatsdagen

(Mark 3:1-6; Luk 6:6-11)

9 Sedan gick Jesus vidare och kom in i deras synagoga, 10 och där fick han se en man som hade en förtvinad hand. Fariseerna frågade honom då: ”Är det tillåtet att bota någon på sabbaten?”, för att få något att anklaga honom för. 11 Men han svarade: ”Om någon av er har ett får och det faller i en grop på sabbaten, griper han då inte tag i det och drar upp det? 12 Tänk då på hur mycket mer värd en människa är än ett får! Det är alltså tillåtet att göra gott på sabbaten.” 13 Sedan sa han till mannen: ”Räck fram din hand!” Och när mannen gjorde det, blev handen lika frisk igen som den andra.

14 Men fariseerna gick ut och började göra upp planer på hur de skulle få Jesus dödad.

Guds tjänare

(Mark 3:7-12; Luk 6:17-19)

15 När Jesus fick reda på detta, drog han sig bort därifrån. Många människor följde efter honom, och han botade alla sjuka bland dem, 16 men han förbjöd dem att avslöja vem han var. 17 Så skulle det gå i uppfyllelse som förutsagts genom profeten Jesaja:

18 ”Detta är min utvalda tjänare,
    min älskade, min innerliga glädje.
Jag låter min Ande komma över honom,
    och han ska förkunna rätten för folken.
19 Han tvistar inte, han skriker inte,
    hans röst hörs inte på gatorna.
20 Han krossar inte ett brutet strå,
    han släcker inte en veke som tynar.
Han för fram rättvisan till seger.
21     Hans namn ska vara folkens hopp.”[e]

Jesus beskylls för att vara i förbund med djävulen

(Mark 3:22-29; Luk 11:14-23; 12:10)

22 Sedan förde man till honom en besatt man som var både blind och stum. Och Jesus botade honom, så att han kunde tala och se. 23 Folk blev alldeles häpna, och sa: ”Kanske denne ändå är Davids Son?” 24 Men när fariseerna fick höra det, sa de: ”Han driver säkert ut de onda andarna med hjälp av Beelsebul, de onda andarnas härskare.”

25 Jesus, som förstod vad fariseerna tänkte, sa då till dem: ”Ett rike där man strider mot varandra går under, och en stad eller en familj där man strider mot varandra upphör snart att existera. 26 Om nu Satan driver ut Satan, då är han ju kluven och strider mot sig själv. Då kan väl inte hans rike bestå? 27 Och om jag driver ut de onda andarna med hjälp av Beelsebul, med vilken kraft driver då era egna anhängare ut dem? De ska därför bli era domare. 28 Men om det är med Guds Ande jag driver ut de onda andarna, då har ju Guds rike kommit till er. 29 Hur kan någon gå in i en stark mans hus och plundra honom på vad han äger, om han inte först binder honom? Sedan kan man plundra hans hus. 30 Den som inte är för mig är emot mig, och den som inte samlar med mig, han skingrar.

31 Därför säger jag er: all synd och hädelse kan förlåtas, utom hädelse mot Anden, den är oförlåtlig. 32 Den som säger något mot Människosonen kan få förlåtelse, men den som säger något mot den heliga Anden, kommer aldrig att bli förlåten, vare sig i den här tidsåldern eller i den kommande.[f]

33 Få ett träd att bli bra, så bär det bra frukt, eller få trädet att bli dåligt, så bär det dålig frukt. För ett träd känns igen på sin frukt. 34 Ni huggormsyngel! Hur skulle ni som är onda kunna säga något gott? Munnen talar ju vad hjärtat är fullt av. 35 En god människa bär fram det goda ur den godhet som lagrats i hennes hjärta, medan en ond människa bär fram det onda ur den ondska som lagrats i hennes hjärta. 36 Jag säger er, att på domens dag ska människorna få stå till svars för varje onyttigt ord de har talat. 37 De ord du talar nu avgör om du ska frias eller dömas.”

De religiösa ledarna ber Jesus om ett tecken

(Luk 11:29-32)

38 En dag bad några av de skriftlärda och fariseerna: ”Mästare, vi vill se dig göra ett tecken.” 39 Men Jesus svarade: ”Detta onda och trolösa släkte söker efter tecken, men det enda tecken de ska få se är profeten Jonas tecken[g]. 40 På samma sätt som Jona var i den stora fisken i tre dagar och tre nätter, ska Människosonen vara i jordens hjärta i tre dagar och tre nätter[h]. 41 Invånarna i Nineve ska på domens dag uppstå tillsammans med detta släkte och döma det, för de vände om när Jona predikade. Men här finns en som är större än Jona. 42 Söderns drottning[i] ska på domens dag uppstå tillsammans med detta släkte och döma det, för hon kom från jordens yttersta gräns för att lyssna till Salomos vishet. Men här finns en som är större än Salomo.

Den orena andens återkomst

(Luk 11:24-26)

43 När en oren ande drivs ut ur en människa, irrar den omkring i vattenlösa trakter och letar efter ro, utan att hitta någon. 44 Då säger den: ’Jag vänder tillbaka till det hus jag kom ifrån.’ Och när den gör det och finner huset tomt, rent och iordningställt, 45 letar den reda på sju andar till, ännu värre än den själv. Tillsammans återvänder de sedan och bosätter sig där. Den människan får det då långt värre än hon hade det förut. Så blir det också med detta onda släkte.”

Jesus riktiga familj

(Mark 3:31-35; Luk 8:19-21)

46 Medan Jesus fortfarande talade till folket, kom hans mor och bröder dit och ville prata med honom, men de stannade utanför huset. 47 Någon sa till honom: ”Din mor och dina bröder står här utanför och vill prata med dig.” 48 Men han svarade: ”Min mor och mina bröder! Vilka är det?” 49 Sedan pekade han på sina lärjungar och sa: ”Det här är min mor och mina syskon. 50 Var och en som gör min himmelske Faders vilja är min bror, min syster och min mor.”

– Смотри! Твои ученики делают то, что не разрешается делать в субботу.[b]

3 Исо ответил им:

– Разве вы не читали, что сделал царь Довуд, когда он и его спутники проголодались? 4 Он вошёл в священный шатёр и ел священный хлеб[c], который нельзя было есть ни ему, ни его людям, но только священнослужителям.[d] 5 Или вы не читали в Тавроте, что в субботу священнослужители трудятся в храме, нарушая святость этого дня, и при этом на них нет вины? 6 Говорю вам, что здесь присутствует Тот, Кто больше храма. 7 Если бы вы знали, что значит: «Милости хочу, а не жертвы»[e], то не обвиняли бы невиновных. 8 Ведь Ниспосланный как Человек – господин над субботой!

Исцеление в субботу человека с больной рукой(B)

9 Уйдя оттуда, Исо зашёл в молитвенный дом иудеев. 10 Там был человек с иссохшей рукой. Недоброжелатели искали повод обвинить Исо и поэтому спросили Его:

– Позволяет ли Закон исцелять в субботу?

11 Исо сказал им:

– Если у кого-то из вас есть одна-единственная овца, и в субботу она упадёт в яму, то разве он не вытащит её оттуда? 12 А ведь насколько человек ценнее овцы! Стало быть, в субботу позволяется делать добро.

13 После этого Он сказал больному:

– Протяни руку.

Тот протянул, и его рука стала совершенно здоровой, как и другая.

14 Блюстители же Закона, выйдя, стали совещаться о том, как им убить Исо.

Кроткий и смиренный Раб Всевышнего(C)

Узнав об этом, Исо ушёл из тех мест. 15 За Ним последовало много людей, и Он исцелил их всех. 16 Но Он запретил им разглашать о том, кто Он.[f] 17 Так исполнялись слова, сказанные через пророка Исаию:

18 «Вот Мой Раб, Которого Я избрал,
    Его Я люблю, Он угоден Мне!
Я дам Ему Духа Моего,
    и Он возвестит народам правосудие.
19 Он не будет ни спорить, ни кричать;
    никто не услышит Его голоса на улицах.
20 Он тростника надломленного не переломит
    и тлеющего фитиля не погасит,
пока не даст восторжествовать правосудию.
21     На Него будут надеяться народы»[g].

Исо Масех изгоняет демонов силой Всевышнего(D)

22 Привели к Исо человека, одержимого демонами, который был к тому же слепым и немым. Исо исцелил его, и он заговорил и стал видеть. 23 Все люди удивлялись и спрашивали друг друга:

– Может, это и есть Сын Довуда?

24 Когда же блюстители Закона услышали это, они сказали:

– Он изгоняет демонов не иначе как силой Баал-Зевула (сатаны), повелителя демонов.

25 Зная, о чём они думают, Исо сказал им:

– Любое царство, разделившееся на враждующие части, приходит в запустение, и никакой город или дом, разделённый враждой, не устоит. 26 И если сатана изгоняет сатану, значит, он враждует против самого себя. Как тогда устоит его царство? 27 Обвиняя Меня в том, что Я изгоняю демонов силой Баал-Зевула, вы, тем самым, обвиняете и ваших последователей, которые также изгоняют демонов. Так что они будут вам судьями. 28 Но если Я изгоняю демонов Духом Всевышнего, то это значит, что Всевышний уже устанавливает среди вас Своё Царство.

29 Кто может войти в дом сильного человека и разграбить его добро, если сначала не свяжет его? Только тогда можно будет ограбить его дом.

30 Кто не со Мной, тот против Меня, и кто не собирает со Мной, тот растрачивает. 31 Любой грех и любое кощунство будут прощены людям, но кощунство над Духом прощено не будет. 32 Кто скажет что-либо против Ниспосланного как Человек, тот будет прощён, но кто говорит против Святого Духа, тот не будет прощён ни в этом веке, ни в будущем.

33 Или признайте дерево хорошим и плод его хорошим, или признайте дерево плохим и плод его плохим, ведь дерево узнаётся по его плодам. 34 Вы, змеиное отродье, как вы можете говорить доброе, если вы злы? Ведь что у человека на сердце, то и на языке. 35 Из своего хранилища добра добрый человек выносит доброе, а злой человек выносит злое из своего хранилища зла. 36 Но говорю вам, что в Судный день люди дадут отчёт за каждое пустое слово, которое они сказали. 37 Ваши собственные слова послужат вам оправданием или осуждением!

Знамение пророка Юнуса(E)

38 Тогда некоторые из блюстителей Закона и учителей Таврота сказали Исо:

– Учитель, мы хотим, чтобы Ты показал нам какое-нибудь знамение.

39 Исо ответил:

– Злое и неверное Всевышнему поколение ищет знамения, но ему не будет дано никакого знамения, кроме знамения пророка Юнуса. 40 И как Юнус был три дня и три ночи в желудке огромной рыбы,[h] так и Ниспосланный как Человек будет в сердце земли три дня и три ночи. 41 Жители Ниневии встанут в Судный день и обвинят это поколение, потому что они покаялись от проповеди Юнуса[i], а сейчас с вами Тот, Кто больше Юнуса. 42 Царица Юга[j] тоже встанет в Судный день и обвинит это поколение, потому что она пришла с другого конца света послушать мудрость царя Сулаймона. Сейчас же с вами Тот, Кто больше Сулаймона.

Возвращение нечистого духа(F)

43 – Когда нечистый дух выходит из человека, он скитается по безводным местам, ища место для отдыха, но не находит его. 44 Тогда он говорит: «Возвращусь-ка я в дом, из которого вышел». И когда он возвращается, то находит дом незанятым, чисто выметенным и убранным. 45 Тогда он идёт, берёт с собой семь других духов, ещё более злых, чем он сам, и они приходят и поселяются там. И это для человека ещё хуже того, что было вначале. Так будет и с этим злым поколением.

Исо Масех говорит о Своей истинной семье(G)

46 Исо ещё говорил с народом, когда к дому подошли Его мать и братья. Они стояли снаружи, желая поговорить с Ним. 47 Кто-то Ему сказал:

– Твоя мать и братья стоят снаружи, они хотят поговорить с Тобой.

48 Но Исо ответил тому человеку:

– Кто Мне мать и кто Мне братья? – 49 и, показав рукой на Своих учеников, сказал: – Вот Моя мать и Мои братья. 50 Потому что кто исполняет волю Моего Небесного Отца, тот Мне и брат, и сестра, и мать.

В этот день, согласно повелению Вечного, исроильский народ должен был отдыхать и совершать ритуальные жертвоприношения (см. Исх. 31:12-17; Чис. 28:9-10). Всевышний установил определённые запреты, касающиеся субботы, но позже духовные учители Исроила изрядно увеличили их число.

12 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn and to eat.

2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.

3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;

4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?

5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?

6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.

7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

9 And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:

10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.

11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?

12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.

13 Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.

14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.

15 But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;

16 And charged them that they should not make him known:

17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.

19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.

20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.

21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

22 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.

23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?

24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:

26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?

27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.

28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.

30 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.

31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.

34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.

39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:

40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.

44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.

45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

46 While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him.

47 Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.

48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?

49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!

50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(A)

Behold, My Servant

15 But when Jesus knew it, (N)He withdrew from there. (O)And great [c]multitudes followed Him, and He healed them all. 16 Yet He (P)warned them not to make Him known, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:

18 “Behold!(Q) My Servant whom I have chosen,
My Beloved (R)in whom My soul is well pleased!
I will put My Spirit upon Him,
And He will declare justice to the Gentiles.
19 He will not quarrel nor cry out,
Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed He will not break,
And smoking flax He will not quench,
Till He sends forth justice to victory;
21 And in His name Gentiles will trust.”

A House Divided Cannot Stand(S)

22 (T)Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the [d]blind and mute man both spoke and saw. 23 And all the multitudes were amazed and said, “Could this be the (U)Son of David?”

24 (V)Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by [e]Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”

25 But Jesus (W)knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. 28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, (X)surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 (Y)Or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house. 30 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.

The Unpardonable Sin(Z)

31 “Therefore I say to you, (AA)every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, (AB)but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32 Anyone who (AC)speaks a word against the Son of Man, (AD)it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

A Tree Known by Its Fruit(AE)

33 “Either make the tree good and (AF)its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. 34 (AG)Brood[f] of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? (AH)For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure [g]of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

The Scribes and Pharisees Ask for a Sign(AI)

38 (AJ)Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”

39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and (AK)adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 (AL)For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 (AM)The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and (AN)condemn it, (AO)because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. 42 (AP)The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.

An Unclean Spirit Returns(AQ)

43 (AR)“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, (AS)he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. 44 Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; (AT)and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers Send for Him(AU)

46 While He was still talking to the multitudes, (AV)behold, His mother and (AW)brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him. 47 Then one said to Him, “Look, (AX)Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.”

48 But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My (AY)brothers! 50 For (AZ)whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(A)(B)

12 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain(C) and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”(D)

3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(E) 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.(F) 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath(G) and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.(H) 7 If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’[a](I) you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man(J) is Lord of the Sabbath.”

9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus,(K) they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”(L)

11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?(M) 12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep!(N) Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.(O)

God’s Chosen Servant

15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill.(P) 16 He warned them not to tell others about him.(Q) 17 This was to fulfill(R) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
    the one I love, in whom I delight;(S)
I will put my Spirit on him,(T)
    and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
19 He will not quarrel or cry out;
    no one will hear his voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed he will not break,
    and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he has brought justice through to victory.
21     In his name the nations will put their hope.”[b](U)

Jesus and Beelzebul(V)

22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see.(W) 23 All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”(X)

24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul,(Y) the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”(Z)

25 Jesus knew their thoughts(AA) and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan(AB) drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul,(AC) by whom do your people(AD) drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God(AE) has come upon you.

29 “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.

30 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.(AF) 31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.(AG) 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age(AH) or in the age to come.(AI)

33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.(AJ) 34 You brood of vipers,(AK) how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks(AL) what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”(AM)

The Sign of Jonah(AN)(AO)

38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign(AP) from you.”(AQ)

39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.(AR) 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish,(AS) so the Son of Man(AT) will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.(AU) 41 The men of Nineveh(AV) will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah,(AW) and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came(AX) from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.(AY) That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(AZ)

46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother(BA) and brothers(BB) stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”

48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven(BC) is my brother and sister and mother.”
