18 In quell'Ora i discepoli si accostarono a Gesú e gli chiesero: «Chi dunque è il piú grande nel regno dei cieli?».

E Gesú, chiamato a sé un piccolo fanciullo, lo pose in mezzo a loro

e disse: «In verità vi dico: se non vi convertite e non diventate come piccoli fanciulli, voi non entrerete affatto nel regno dei cieli.

Chi dunque si umilierà come questo piccolo fanciullo, sarà il piú grande nel regno dei cieli.

E chiunque riceve un piccolo fanciullo come questo in nome mio, riceve me.

Ma chi avrà scandalizzato uno di questi piccoli che credono in me, sarebbe meglio per lui che gli fosse legata una macina d'asino al collo e che fosse sommerso nel fondo del mare.

Guai al mondo per gli scandali! Perché è necessario che avvengano gli scandali, ma guai a quell'uomo per colpa del quale avviene lo scandalo!

Ora, se la tua mano, o il tuo piede, ti è occasione di peccato, mozzalo e gettalo via da te; è meglio per te entrare nella vita monco o zoppo, che avere due mani e due piedi ed essere gettato nel fuoco eterno.

Parimenti, se il tuo occhio ti è occasione di peccato, cavalo e gettalo via da te, è meglio per te entrare nella vita avendo un occhio solo che, avendone due, esser gettato nella Geenna, del fuoco.

10 Guardatevi dal disprezzare alcuno di questi piccoli, perché io vi dico che gli angeli loro vedono continuamente nei cieli la faccia del Padre mio, che è nei cieli.

11 Poiché il Figlio dell'uomo è venuto per salvare ciò che era perduto.

12 Che ve ne pare? Se un uomo ha cento pecore ed una di esse si smarrisce non lascerà egli le novantanove sui monti per andare in cerca di quella smarrita?

13 E se gli capita di ritrovarla, io vi dico in verità che si rallegrerà piú di questa che delle novantanove che non si erano smarrite.

14 Cosí è la volontà del Padre vostro che è nei cieli, che neppure uno di questi piccoli perisca».

15 «Ora, se il tuo fratello ha peccato contro di te, va' e riprendilo fra te e lui solo; se ti ascolta, tu hai guadagnato il tuo fratello;

16 ma se non ti ascolta, prendi con te ancora uno o due persone, affinché ogni parola sia confermata per la bocca di due o tre testimoni.

17 Se poi rifiuta di ascoltarli, dillo alla chiesa; e se rifiuta anche di ascoltare la chiesa, sia per te come il pagano e il pubblicano.

18 In verità vi dico che tutte le cose che voi avrete legate sulla terra saranno legate nel cielo; e tutte le cose che avrete sciolte sulla terra saranno sciolte nel cielo

19 Ancora io vi dico che, se due di voi si accordano sulla terra per domandare qualunque cosa, questa sarà loro concessa dal Padre mio che è nei cieli.

20 Poiché dovunque due o tre sono riuniti nel mio nome, io sono in mezzo a loro».

21 Allora Pietro, accostatosi, gli disse: «Signore, se il mio fratello pecca contro di me, quante volte gli dovrò perdonare? Fino a sette volte?».

22 Gesú gli disse: «Io non ti dico fino a sette volte, ma fino a settanta volte sette.

23 Perciò il regno dei cieli è simile ad un re, il quale volle fare i conti con i suoi servi.

24 Avendo iniziato a fare i conti, gli fu presentato uno che gli era debitore di diecimila talenti.

25 E non avendo questi di che pagare, il suo padrone comandò che fosse venduto lui con sua moglie, i suoi figli e tutto quanto aveva, perché il debito fosse saldato.

26 Allora quel servo, gettandosi a terra gli si prostrò davanti dicendo: "Signore, abbi pazienza con me e ti pagherò tutto"

27 Mosso a compassione, il padrone di quel servo lo lasciò andare e gli condonò il debito.

28 Ma quel servo, uscito fuori, incontrò uno dei suoi conservi, che gli doveva cento denari; e, afferratolo per la gola, lo soffocava dicendo: "Pagami ciò che mi devi"

29 Allora il suo conservo, gettandosi ai suoi piedi, lo supplicava dicendo: "Abbi pazienza con me, e ti pagherò tutto"

30 Ma costui non volle, anzi andò e lo fece imprigionare, finché non avesse pagato il debito.

31 Ora gli altri servi, visto quanto era accaduto, ne furono grandemente rattristati e andarono a riferire al loro padrone tutto ciò che era accaduto.

32 Allora il suo padrone lo chiamò a sé e gli disse: "servo malvagio, io ti ho condonato tutto quel debito, perché mi hai supplicato.

33 Non dovevi anche tu aver pietà del tuo conservo, come io ho avuto pietà di te?"

34 E il suo padrone, adiratosi, lo consegnò agli aguzzini finché non avesse pagato tutto quanto gli doveva.

35 Cosí il mio Padre celeste farà pure a voi, se ciascuno di voi non perdona di cuore al proprio fratello i suoi falli».

18 In that hour the disciples came to Jesus saying, Who then is greatest in the kingdom of the heavens?

And Jesus having called a little child to [him], set it in their midst,

and said, Verily I say to you, Unless ye are converted and become as little children, ye will not at all enter into the kingdom of the heavens.

Whoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, *he* is the greatest in the kingdom of the heavens;

and whosoever shall receive one such little child in my name, receives me.

But whosoever shall offend one of these little ones who believe in me, it were profitable for him that a great millstone had been hanged upon his neck and he be sunk in the depths of the sea.

Woe to the world because of offences! For it must needs be that offences come; yet woe to that man by whom the offence comes!

And if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut it off and cast [it] from thee; it is good for thee to enter into life lame or maimed, [rather] than having two hands or two feet to be cast into eternal fire.

And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out and cast [it] from thee; it is good for thee to enter into life one-eyed, [rather] than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire.

10 See that ye do not despise one of these little ones; for I say unto you that their angels in [the] heavens continually behold the face of my Father who is in [the] heavens.

11 For the Son of man has come to save that which was lost.

12 What think ye? If a certain man should have a hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, does he not, leaving the ninety and nine on the mountains, go and seek the one that has gone astray?

13 And if it should come to pass that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoices more because of it than because of the ninety and nine not gone astray.

14 So it is not the will of your Father who is in [the] heavens that one of these little ones should perish.

15 But if thy brother sin against thee, go, reprove him between thee and him alone. If he hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

16 But if he do not hear [thee], take with thee one or two besides, that every matter may stand upon the word of two witnesses or of three.

17 But if he will not listen to them, tell it to the assembly; and if also he will not listen to the assembly, let him be to thee as one of the nations and a tax-gatherer.

18 Verily I say to you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on the earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatsoever ye shall loose on the earth shall be loosed in heaven.

19 Again I say to you, that if two of you shall agree on the earth concerning any matter, whatsoever it may be that they shall ask, it shall come to them from my Father who is in [the] heavens.

20 For where two or three are gathered together unto my name, there am I in the midst of them.

21 Then Peter came to him and said, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? until seven times?

22 Jesus says to him, I say not to thee until seven times, but until seventy times seven.

23 For this cause the kingdom of the heavens has become like a king who would reckon with his bondmen.

24 And having begun to reckon, one debtor of ten thousand talents was brought to him.

25 But he not having anything to pay, [his] lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and his children, and everything that he had, and that payment should be made.

26 The bondman therefore falling down did him homage, saying, Lord, have patience with me and I will pay thee all.

27 And the lord of that bondman, being moved with compassion, loosed him and forgave him the loan.

28 But that bondman having gone out, found one of his fellow-bondmen who owed him a hundred denarii. And having seized him, he throttled him, saying, Pay [me] if thou owest anything.

29 His fellow-bondman therefore, having fallen down [at his feet], besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee.

30 But he would not, but went away and cast him into prison, until he should pay what was owing.

31 But his fellow-bondmen, having seen what had taken place, were greatly grieved, and went and recounted to their lord all that had taken place.

32 Then his lord, having called him to [him], says to him, Wicked bondman! I forgave thee all that debt because thou besoughtest me;

33 shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow-bondman, as *I* also had compassion on thee?

34 And his lord being angry delivered him to the tormentors till he paid all that was owing to him.

35 Thus also my heavenly Father shall do to you if ye forgive not from your hearts every one his brother.

The Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven(A)

18 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”

He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children,(B) you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.(C) Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.(D) And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.(E)

Causing to Stumble

“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.(F) Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!(G) If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble,(H) cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to stumble,(I) gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.(J)

The Parable of the Wandering Sheep(K)

10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels(L) in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven. [11] [a]

12 “What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? 13 And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.

Dealing With Sin in the Church

15 “If your brother or sister[b] sins,[c] go and point out their fault,(M) just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’[d](N) 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church;(O) and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.(P)

18 “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be[e] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[f] loosed in heaven.(Q)

19 “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them(R) by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”(S)

The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant

21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me?(T) Up to seven times?”(U)

22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.[g](V)

23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like(W) a king who wanted to settle accounts(X) with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold[h] was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay,(Y) the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold(Z) to repay the debt.

26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him.(AA) ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.

28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins.[i] He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.

29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’

30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.

32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”(AB)
