Seeking a Sign(A)

29 (B)And while the crowds were thickly gathered together, He began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks a (C)sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah [a]the prophet. 30 For as (D)Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation. 31 (E)The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a (F)greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for (G)they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.

The Lamp of the Body(H)

33 (I)“No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a (J)basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light. 34 (K)The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is [b]good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is [c]bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35 Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.”

29 And the multitudes crowding together upon him, he began to say, `This generation is evil, a sign it doth seek after, and a sign shall not be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet,

30 for as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also shall the Son of Man be to this generation.

31 `A queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and shall condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and lo, greater than Solomon here!

32 `Men of Nineveh shall stand up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it, because they reformed at the proclamation of Jonah; and lo, greater than Jonah here!

33 `And no one having lighted a lamp, doth put [it] in a secret place, nor under the measure, but on the lamp-stand, that those coming in may behold the light.

34 `The lamp of the body is the eye, when then thine eye may be simple, thy whole body also is lightened; and when it may be evil, thy body also is darkened;

35 take heed, then, lest the light that [is] in thee be darkness;

36 if then thy whole body is lightened, not having any part darkened, the whole shall be lightened, as when the lamp by the brightness may give thee light.'

The Sign of Jonah

29 Now as the crowds were increasing, He began to say, (A)This generation is a wicked generation; it (B)demands a [a]sign, and so no [b]sign will be given to it except the [c]sign of Jonah. 30 For just as (C)Jonah became a [d]sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The (D)Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation at the judgment and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment and condemn it, because (E)they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

33 (F)No one lights a lamp and puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 (G)Your eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is [e]clear, your whole body also is full of light; but when it is [f]bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35 So watch out that the light in you is not darkness. 36 Therefore if your whole body is full of light, without any dark part, it will be wholly illuminated, as when the lamp illuminates you with its light.”
