John 13-16
Wycliffe Bible
13 But before the feast day of pask Jesus witting, that his hour is come, that he pass from this world to the Father [Jesus witting, for his hour cometh, that he pass over this world to the Father], when he had loved his that were in the world, into the end he loved them.
2 And when the supper was made, when the devil had put then into the heart, that Judas of Simon Iscariot should betray him, [And the supper made, when the devil had sent now into the heart of Judas, of Simon Iscariot, that he should betray him,]
3 he witting that the Father gave all things to him into his hands, and that he went out from God, and goeth to God,
4 he riseth from the supper, and doeth off his clothes; and when he had taken a linen cloth, he girded him(self).
5 And afterward he put water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe with the linen cloth, with which he was girded.
6 And so he came to Simon Peter, and Peter saith to him, Lord, washest thou my feet?
7 Jesus answered, and said to him, What I do, thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know afterward.
8 Peter saith to him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered to him, If I shall not wash thee, thou shalt not have part with me.
9 Simon Peter saith to him, Lord, not only my feet, but both the hands and the head [but and mine hands and the head].
10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed, hath no need but that he wash the feet, but he is all clean [but he is clean all]; and ye be clean, but not all.
11 For he knew, who it was that should betray him [Forsooth he knew, who should betray him]; therefore he said, Ye be not all clean.
12 And so after that he had washed their feet, he took his clothes; and when he was set to meat again, again he said to them, Ye know what I have done to you. [Therefore after that he had washed the feet of them, he took his clothes; and when he had rested again, again he said to them, Know ye what I have done to you(?)]
13 Ye call me master and Lord, and ye say well; for I am.
14 Therefore if I, Lord and master, have washed your feet, and ye shall wash one another's feet [and ye owe to wash another the tother's feet];
15 for I have given to you ensample, that as I have done to you, so do ye. [for I have given example to you, that as I have done to you, so and ye do.]
16 Truly, truly, I say to you, the servant is not greater than his lord, neither an apostle is greater than he that sent him.
17 If ye know these things, ye shall be blessed, if ye do them.
18 I say not of you all, I know which I have chosen [I know whom I have chosen]; but that the scripture be fulfilled, He that eateth my bread, shall raise his heel against me.
19 Truly, I say to you before it be done, that when it is done, ye believe that I am.
20 Truly, truly, I say to you, he that taketh whomever I shall send, receiveth me; and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.
21 When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit, and witnessed, and said, Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you shall betray me.
22 Therefore the disciples looked together, doubting of whom he said.
23 And so one of his disciples was resting in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus loved.
24 Therefore Simon Peter beckoned to him, and said to him, Who is it, of whom he saith?
25 And so when he had rested again on the breast of Jesus, he saith to him, Lord, who is it?
26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall areach a sop of bread. And when he had wet bread, he gave to Judas of Simon Iscariot. [Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall dress bread dipped in. And when he had dipped in bread, he gave to Judas of Simon Iscariot.]
27 And after the morsel, then Satan entered into him. And Jesus saith to him, That thing that thou doest, do thou swiftly.
28 And none of them that sat at the meat knew, whereto he said to him. [Forsooth no man sitting at the meat knew this thing, to what thing he said to him.]
29 For some guessed, for Judas had purses, that Jesus had said to him, Buy thou those things, that be needful to us to the feast day [that be needful to us at the feast day], or that he should give something to needy men.
30 Therefore when he had taken the morsel, he went out at once [he went out anon]; and it was night.
31 Therefore when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now man's Son is clarified, and God is clarified in him.
32 If God is clarified in him, and God shall clarify him in himself, and at once [and anon] he shall clarify him.
33 Little sons, yet a little I am with you; ye shall seek me, and, as I said to the Jews, Whither I go, ye be not able to come [Whither I go, ye may not come]; and to you I say now.
34 I give to you a new commandment, that ye love together, as I have loved you, and that ye love together [that ye love together, as I loved you, that and ye love together].
35 In this thing all men shall know, that ye be my disciples, if ye have love together.
36 Simon Peter saith to him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered, Whither I go, thou mayest not follow me now, but thou shalt follow me afterward.
37 Peter saith to him, Why may I not follow thee now? I shall put my life for thee.
38 Jesus answered, Thou shalt put thy life for me? Truly, truly, I say to thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou shalt deny me thrice.
39 And he saith to his disciples,
14 Be not your heart afraid [Be not your heart distroubled], nor dread it; ye believe in God, and believe ye in me.
2 In the house of my Father be many dwellings; if any thing less, I had said to you [if any thing less, I should have said to you], for I go to make ready to you a place.
3 And if I go, and make ready to you a place, again I come, and I shall take you to myself, that where I am, ye be.
4 And whither I go, ye know, and ye know the way.
5 Thomas saith to him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest, and how be we able to know the way [and how may we know the way]?
6 Jesus saith to him, I am way, truth, and life; no man cometh to the Father, but by me.
7 If ye had known me, soothly ye had known also my Father; and afterward ye shall know him, and ye have seen him.
8 Philip saith to him, Lord, show to us the Father, and it sufficeth to us.
9 Jesus saith to him, So long time I am with you, and have ye not known me? Philip, he that seeth me, seeth also the Father. How sayest thou, show to us the Father?
10 Believest thou not, that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you, I speak not of myself; but the Father himself that dwelleth in me, [he] doeth the works.
11 Believe ye not, that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? Else believe ye for those works.
12 Truly, truly, I say to you, if a man believeth in me [Truly, truly, I say to you, he that believeth in me], also he shall do the works that I do; and he shall do greater works than these, for I go to the Father.
13 And whatever thing ye [shall] ask the Father in my name, I shall do this thing, that the Father be glorified in the Son.
14 If ye [shall] ask any thing in my name, I shall do it.
15 If ye love me, keep ye my commandments.
16 And I shall pray the Father, and he shall give to you another comforter, the Spirit of truth, to dwell with you without end; [And I shall pray the Father, and he shall give to you another comforter, that he dwell with you into without end;]
17 which Spirit the world may not take [the Spirit of truth, which Spirit the world may not take], for it seeth him not, neither knoweth him. But ye shall know him, for he shall dwell with you, and he shall be in you.
18 I shall not leave you fatherless, I shall come to you.
19 Yet a little, and the world seeth not now me [Yet a little, and the world seeth not me now]; but ye shall see me, for I live, and ye shall live.
20 In that day ye shall know, that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me, shall be loved of my Father, and I shall love him, and I shall show to him myself.
22 Judas saith to him, not he of Iscariot, Lord, what is done, that thou shalt show thyself to us, and not to the world?
23 Jesus answered, and said to him, If any man loveth me, he shall keep my word [he shall keep my words]; and my Father shall love him, and we shall come to him, and we shall dwell with him [and we shall make a dwelling at him].
24 He that loveth me not, keepeth not my words; and the word which ye have heard, is not mine, but the Father's, that sent me.
25 These things I have spoken to you, dwelling among you;
26 but that Holy Ghost, the comforter, whom the Father shall send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and shall show to you all things, whatever things I shall say to you [he shall teach you all things, and shall show, or remember, to you all things, whatever I shall say to you].
27 Peace I leave to you, my peace I give to you; not as the world giveth, I give to you; be not your heart afraid, nor dread it [be not your heart troubled, neither dread it].
28 Ye have heard, that I said to you, I go, and come to you. If ye loved me, forsooth ye should have joy [If ye loved me, forsooth ye should joy], for I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.
29 And now I have said to you, before that it be done [before it be done], that when it is done, ye believe.
30 Now I shall not speak many things with you; for the prince of this world cometh, and hath not in me any thing [and he hath not any thing in me].
31 But that the world know, that I love the Father; and as the Father gave a commandment to me, so I do. Rise ye, go we hence.
15 I am a very vine, and my Father is an earth-tiller.
2 Each branch in me that beareth not fruit, he shall take away it [he shall do it away]; and each that beareth fruit, he shall purge it, that it bear the more fruit [that it bear more fruit].
3 Now ye be clean, for the word that I have spoken to you.
4 Dwell ye in me, and I in you; as a branch may not make fruit of itself, but it dwell in the vine, so neither ye, but ye dwell in me.
5 I am the vine, ye be the branches. Who that dwelleth in me, and I in him, this beareth much fruit, for without me, ye be able to nothing do.[a]
6 If any man dwelleth not in me, he shall be cast out as a branch, and shall wax dry; and they shall gather him, and they shall cast him into the fire, and he shall burn [and he burneth].
7 If ye dwell in me, and my words dwell in you, whatever thing ye will [whatever thing ye shall desire], ye shall ask, and it shall be done to you.
8 In this thing my Father is clarified, that ye bring forth full much fruit, and that ye be made my disciples.
9 As my Father loved me, I have loved you; dwell ye in my love.
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall dwell in my love; as I have kept the commandments of my Father, and dwell in his love.
11 These things I spake to you, that my joy be in you, and your joy be full-filled [and your joy be filled].
12 This is my commandment, that ye love together, as I have loved you.
13 No man hath more love than this, that a man put his life for his friends.
14 Ye be my friends if ye do those things, that I command to you.
15 Now I shall not call you servants, for the servant knoweth not, what his lord shall do; but I have called you friends, for all things whatever I heard of my Father, I have made known to you.
16 Ye have not chosen me, but I chose you; and I have put you [and put you], that ye go, and bring forth fruit, and your fruit dwell; that whatever thing ye [shall] ask the Father in my name, he give to you.
17 These things I command to you, that ye love together.
18 If the world hate you, know ye, that it had me in hate rather than you [know ye, for it had me in hate first than you].
19 If ye had been of the world, the world should love that thing that was his; but for ye be not of the world, but I chose you from the world, therefore the world hateth you.
20 Have ye mind of my word, which I said to you [that I said to you], The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have pursued me, they shall pursue you also; if they have kept my word, they shall keep yours also.
21 But they shall do to you all these things for my name, for they know not him that sent me.
22 If I had not come, and had not spoken to them, they should not have sin; but now they have none excusation of their sin [forsooth now they have not excusing of their sin].
23 He that hateth me, hateth also my Father.
24 If I had not done the works in them, which none other man did, they should not have sin; but now both they have seen, and hated/have hated me and my Father.
25 But that the word be fulfilled, that is written in their law, For they had me in hate without cause.
26 But when the comforter shall come, which I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, which cometh forth of the Father [which proceedeth, or cometh forth, of the Father], he shall bear witnessing of me;
27 and ye shall bear witnessing, for ye be with me from the beginning.
16 These things I have spoken to you, that ye be not caused to stumble [that ye be not offended].
2 They shall make you without the synagogues, but the hour cometh, that each man that slayeth you, deem that he doeth service to God.
3 And they shall do to you these things, for they have not known the Father, neither me.
4 But these things I spake to you, that when the hour of them shall come, ye have mind, that I said to you. I said not to you these things from the beginning, for I was with you.
5 And now I go to him that sent me, and no man of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
6 but for I have spoken to you these things, heaviness hath full-filled your heart [sorrow, or heaviness, hath full-filled your heart].
7 But I say to you truth, it speedeth to you, that I go; for if I go not forth [soothly if I shall not go away], the comforter shall not come to you; but if I go forth [forsooth if I shall go away], I shall send him to you.
8 And when he cometh [And when he shall come], he shall reprove the world of sin, and of rightwiseness, and of doom.
9 Of sin, for they have not believed in me;
10 and of rightwiseness, for I go to the Father, and now ye shall not see me;
11 but of doom, for the prince of this world is now deemed.
12 Yet I have many things to say to you, but ye be not able to bear them now.
13 But when the Spirit of truth cometh [shall come], he shall teach you all truth; for he shall not speak of himself, but whatever things he shall hear, he shall speak; and he shall tell to you those things [and he shall tell to you the things] that be to come.
14 He shall clarify me, for of mine he shall take, and shall tell to you.
15 All things, whatever [things] the Father hath, be mine; therefore I said to you, that of mine he shall take, and shall tell to you.
16 A little, and then ye shall not see me; and again a little, and ye shall see me, for I go to the Father.
17 Therefore some of his disciples said together, What is this thing that he saith to us, A little, and ye shall not see me; and again a little, and ye shall see me, for I go to the Father?
18 Therefore they said, What is this that he saith to us, A little? we know not what he speaketh.
19 And Jesus knew, that they would ask him, and he said to them, Of this thing ye seek among you, for I said, A little, and ye shall not see me; and again a little, and ye shall see me.
20 Truly, truly, I say to you, that ye shall mourn and weep, but the world shall have joy; and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall turn into joy.
21 A woman when she beareth child, hath heaviness [hath sorrow, or heaviness], for her time is come; but when she hath born a son, now she thinketh not on the pain, for joy, for a man is born into the world.
22 And therefore ye have now sorrow, but again I shall see you, and your heart shall have joy, and no man shall take from you your joy.
23 And in that day ye shall not ask me any thing; truly, truly, I say to you, if ye ask the Father any thing in my name, he shall give [it] to you.
24 Till now ye asked nothing in my name; ask ye, and ye shall take, that your joy be full.
25 I have spoken to you these things in proverbs; the hour cometh, when now I shall not speak to you in proverbs, but openly of my Father I shall tell to you [I shall tell you].
26 In that day ye shall ask in my name; and I say not to you, that I shall pray the Father for you;
27 for the Father himself loveth you, for ye have loved me, and have believed, that I went out from God.
28 I went out from the Father, and I came into the world; again I leave the world, and go to the Father.
29 His disciples said to him, Lo! now thou speakest openly, and thou sayest no proverb.
30 Now we know, that thou knowest all things; and it is not need to thee [and it is no need to thee], that any man ask thee. In this thing we believe, that thou wentest out from God.
31 Jesus answered to them, Now ye believe.
32 Lo! the hour cometh, and now it cometh, that ye be scattered, each into his own things, and that ye leave me alone; and I am not alone, for the Father is with me.
33 These things I have spoken to you, that ye have peace in me; in the world ye shall have dis-ease [in the world ye shall have pressing, or overlaying], but trust ye, I have overcome the world.

New International Version
Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet
13 It was just before the Passover Festival.(A) Jesus knew that the hour had come(B) for him to leave this world and go to the Father.(C) Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.(D) 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power,(E) and that he had come from God(F) and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.(G) 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet,(H) drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”(I)
8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean,(J) though not every one of you.”(K) 11 For he knew who was going to betray him,(L) and that was why he said not every one was clean.
12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’(M) and ‘Lord,’(N) and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.(O) 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.(P) 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master,(Q) nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.(R)
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
18 “I am not referring to all of you;(S) I know those I have chosen.(T) But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture:(U) ‘He who shared my bread(V) has turned[a](W) against me.’[b](X)
19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe(Y) that I am who I am.(Z) 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”(AA)
21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit(AB) and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”(AC)
22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved,(AD) was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”
25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”(AE)
26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,(AF) the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.(AG)
So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money,(AH) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,(AI) or to give something to the poor.(AJ) 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.(AK)
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(AL)
31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man(AM) is glorified(AN) and God is glorified in him.(AO) 32 If God is glorified in him,[c] God will glorify the Son in himself,(AP) and will glorify him at once.
33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.(AQ)
34 “A new command(AR) I give you: Love one another.(AS) As I have loved you, so you must love one another.(AT) 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”(AU)
36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”(AV)
Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now,(AW) but you will follow later.”(AX)
37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!(AY)
Jesus Comforts His Disciples
14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.(AZ) You believe(BA) in God[d];(BB) believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there(BC) to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back(BD) and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.(BE) 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Jesus the Way to the Father
5 Thomas(BF) said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus answered, “I am(BG) the way(BH) and the truth(BI) and the life.(BJ) No one comes to the Father except through me.(BK) 7 If you really know me, you will know[e] my Father as well.(BL) From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip(BM) said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.(BN) How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?(BO) The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority.(BP) Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.(BQ) 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes(BR) in me will do the works I have been doing,(BS) and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask(BT) in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
15 “If you love me, keep my commands.(BU) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate(BV) to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth.(BW) The world cannot accept him,(BX) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[f] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans;(BY) I will come to you.(BZ) 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.(CA) Because I live, you also will live.(CB) 20 On that day(CC) you will realize that I am in my Father,(CD) and you are in me, and I am in you.(CE) 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.(CF) The one who loves me will be loved by my Father,(CG) and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
22 Then Judas(CH) (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”(CI)
23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.(CJ) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.(CK) 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.(CL)
25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate,(CM) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,(CN) will teach you all things(CO) and will remind you of everything I have said to you.(CP) 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.(CQ) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled(CR) and do not be afraid.
28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’(CS) If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father,(CT) for the Father is greater than I.(CU) 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.(CV) 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world(CW) is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.(CX)
“Come now; let us leave.
The Vine and the Branches
15 “I am(CY) the true vine,(CZ) and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,(DA) while every branch that does bear fruit(DB) he prunes[g] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.(DC) 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you.(DD) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;(DE) apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.(DF) 7 If you remain in me(DG) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.(DH) 8 This is to my Father’s glory,(DI) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.(DJ)
9 “As the Father has loved me,(DK) so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands,(DL) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.(DM) 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.(DN) 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(DO) 14 You are my friends(DP) if you do what I command.(DQ) 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.(DR) 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(DS) so that you might go and bear fruit(DT)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.(DU) 17 This is my command: Love each other.(DV)
The World Hates the Disciples
18 “If the world hates you,(DW) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(DX) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.(DY) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[h](DZ) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.(EA) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name,(EB) for they do not know the one who sent me.(EC) 22 If I had not come and spoken to them,(ED) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.(EE) 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did,(EF) they would not be guilty of sin.(EG) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:(EH) ‘They hated me without reason.’[i](EI)
The Work of the Holy Spirit
26 “When the Advocate(EJ) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father(EK)—the Spirit of truth(EL) who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.(EM) 27 And you also must testify,(EN) for you have been with me from the beginning.(EO)
16 “All this(EP) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(EQ) 2 They will put you out of the synagogue;(ER) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(ES) 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(ET) 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(EU) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(EV) 5 but now I am going to him who sent me.(EW) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(EX) 6 Rather, you are filled with grief(EY) because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(EZ) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(FA) 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin,(FB) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(FC) because I am going to the Father,(FD) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(FE) now stands condemned.
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(FF) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(FG) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(FH) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(FI) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy
16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(FJ) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(FK)
17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(FL) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(FM) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”
19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(FN) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(FO) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(FP) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(FQ) but I will see you again(FR) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(FS) 23 In that day(FT) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(FU) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(FV) and your joy will be complete.(FW)
25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(FX) a time is coming(FY) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(FZ) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(GA) and have believed that I came from God.(GB) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(GC)
29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(GD) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(GE) that you came from God.”(GF)
31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(GG) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(GH) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(GI) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(GJ)
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(GK) In this world you will have trouble.(GL) But take heart! I have overcome(GM) the world.”
