7 During the days of Achaz the son of Yotam, the son of ‘Uziyahu, king of Y’hudah, Retzin the king of Aram and Pekach the son of Remalyah, king of Isra’el, advanced on Yerushalayim to attack it but were unable to conquer it. 2 It was told to the house of David that Aram and Efrayim had become allies. Achaz’s heart began to tremble, as did the hearts of his people, like forest trees shaken by the wind.
3 Then Adonai said to Yesha‘yahu, “Go out now to meet Achaz, you and your son Sh’ar Yashuv, at the end of the aqueduct from the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderers’ Field; 4 and say to him, ‘Take care to stay calm and unafraid; don’t be demoralized by these two smoldering stumps of firewood, by the blazing anger of Retzin and Aram or the son of Remalyah; 5 or because Aram, Efrayim and the son of Remalyah have been plotting against you, thinking, 6 “We will invade Y’hudah, tear it apart, divide it among ourselves and appoint the son of Tav’el as king there.”
7 “‘This is what Adonai Elohim says:
“It won’t occur, it won’t happen.
8 For the head of Aram is Dammesek,
and the head of Dammesek Retzin.
In sixty-five years Efrayim will be broken
and will cease to be a people.
9 The head of Efrayim is Shomron,
and the head of Shomron is the son of Remalyah.
Without firm faith,
you will not be firmly established.”’”
10 Adonai spoke again to Achaz; he said, 11 “Ask Adonai your God to give you a sign. Ask it anywhere, from the depths of Sh’ol to the heights above.” 12 But Achaz answered, “I won’t ask, I won’t test Adonai.”
13 Then [the prophet] said,
“Listen here, house of David!
Is trying people’s patience
such a small thing for you
that you must try the patience
of my God as well?
14 Therefore Adonai himself
will give you people a sign:
the young woman* will become pregnant,
bear a son and name him ‘Immanu El [God is with us].
15 By the time he knows enough
to refuse evil and choose good,
he will [have to] eat
curdled milk and [wild] honey.
16 Yes, before the child knows enough
to refuse evil and choose good,
the land whose two kings you dread
will be left abandoned.
17 Adonai will bring the king of Ashur
on you, your people and your father’s house.
These will be days worse than any you’ve known
since Efrayim broke loose from Y’hudah.”
18 Yes, when that day comes,
Adonai will whistle for the fly
in the farthest streams of the Nile in Egypt
and for the bee in the land of Ashur.
19 They will come and settle, all of them,
in steep vadis and holes in the rocks
and on all thorn bushes and brambles.
20 When that day comes, Adonai will shave —
with a razor hired beyond the [Euphrates] River,
that is, with the king of Ashur —
the head and the hair between the legs,
and get rid of the beard as well.
21 When that day comes, a man will raise
a young cow and two sheep.
22 Will they produce in abundance?
No, he will [have to] eat curdled milk.
Indeed, everyone left in the land
will eat curdled milk and [wild] honey.
23 When that day comes,
wherever there once were a thousand grapevines,
worth a thousand pieces of silver,
there will be only briars and thorns.
24 One will go there [to hunt] with bow and arrow,
because all the land will be briars and thorns.
25 You won’t visit hills once worked with a hoe,
for fear of the briars and thorns;
it will be good only for pasturing cattle
and being trampled down by sheep.
8 Adonai said to me, “Take a large tablet, and write on it in easily readable letters; ‘Maher shalal, hash baz [the spoil hurries, the prey speeds along].’” 2 I had it witnessed for me by reliable witnesses — Uriyah the cohen and Z’kharyahu the son of Y’verekhyahu. 3 Then I had sexual relations with my wife; she became pregnant and gave birth to a son; and Adonai said to me, “Name him Maher Shalal Hash Baz; 4 because before the child knows how to cry, ‘Abba!’ and ‘Eema!’, the riches of Dammesek and the spoil of Shomron will be carried off and given to the king of Ashur.” 5 Adonai went on speaking and said more to me:
6 “Since this people has rejected
the gently flowing waters from Shilo’ach
and takes joy in Retzin and the son of Remalyah;
7 now Adonai will bring upon them
the mighty floodwaters of the [Euphrates] River —
that is, the king of Ashur and his power.
It will rise above all its channels
and overflow all its banks.
8 It will sweep through Y’hudah,
flooding everything and passing on.
It will reach even up to the neck,
and its outspread wings
will fill the whole expanse of the land.”
God is with us! [a]
9 You may make an uproar, peoples;
but you will be shattered.
Listen, all of you from distant lands:
arm yourselves, but you will be shattered;
yes, arm yourselves,
but you will be shattered;
10 devise a plan, but it will come to nothing;
say anything you like, but it won’t happen;
because God is with us [b].
11 For this is what Adonai said to me, speaking with a strong hand, warning me not to live the way this people does:
12 “Don’t regard as alliance what this people calls alliance,
and don’t fear what they fear or be awestruck by it;
13 but Adonai-Tzva’ot — consecrate him!
Let him be the object of your fear and awe!
14 He is there to be a sanctuary.
But for both the houses of Isra’el
he will be a stone to stumble over,
a rock obstructing their way;
a trap and a snare
for the inhabitants of Yerushalayim.
15 Many of them will stumble and fall,
be broken and trapped and captured.
16 Wrap up this document, and confine its teaching to those I have instructed.”
17 I will wait for Adonai,
who is hiding his face
from the house of Ya‘akov;
yes, I will look for him.
18 Meanwhile, I and the children
whom Adonai has given me
will become for Isra’el
signs and wonders
from Adonai-Tzva’ot
living on Mount Tziyon.
19 So when they tell you to consult
those squeaking, squawking mediums and fortune-tellers;
[you are to answer],
“Shouldn’t a people seek their God?
Must the living ask the dead
20 for teaching and instruction?”
For they will indeed give you
this unenlightened suggestion.
21 Distressed and hungry
they will pass through the land;
and because of their hunger they will grow angry
and curse by their king and by their God.
But whether they look up [to God]
22 or [down] at the earth,
they will see only trouble and darkness,
anguished gloom and pervasive darkness.
23 (9:1) But there will be no more gloom
for those who are now in anguish.
In the past the land of Z’vulun
and the land of Naftali were regarded lightly;
but in the future he will honor the way to the lake,
beyond the Yarden, Galil-of-the-Goyim.
9 (2) The people living in darkness
have seen a great light;
upon those living in the land that lies
in the shadow of death, light has dawned.
2 (3) You have enlarged the nation
and increased their joy;
they rejoice in your presence
as if rejoicing at harvest time,
the way men rejoice
when dividing up the spoil.
3 (4) For the yoke that weighed them down,
the bar across their shoulders,
and their driver’s goad
you have broken as on the day of Midyan[’s defeat].
4 (5) For all the boots of soldiers marching
and every cloak rolled in blood
is destined for burning,
fuel for the fire.
5 (6) For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us;
dominion will rest on his shoulders,
and he will be given the name
Pele-Yo‘etz El Gibbor
Avi-‘Ad Sar-Shalom
[Wonder of a Counselor, Mighty God,
Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace],
6 (7) in order to extend the dominion
and perpetuate the peace
of the throne and kingdom of David,
to secure it and sustain it
through justice and righteousness
henceforth and forever.
The zeal of Adonai-Tzva’ot
will accomplish this.
7 (8) Adonai sent a word to Ya‘akov,
and it has fallen on Isra’el.
8 (9) All the people know it,
Efrayim and the inhabitants of Shomron.
But they say in pride,
in the arrogance of their hearts,
9 (10) “The bricks have fallen,
but we will rebuild with cut stone;
the sycamore-fig trees have been chopped down,
but we will replace them with cedars.”
10 (11) So Adonai has raised up Retzin’s foes against him
and spurred on his enemies —
11 (12) Aram from the east, P’lishtim from the west;
and they devour Isra’el with an open mouth.
Even after all this, his anger remains,
his upraised hand still threatens.
12 (13) Yet the people do not turn to the one striking them,
they don’t seek Adonai-Tzva’ot.
13 (14) Therefore Adonai will cut off
Isra’el’s head and tail,
[tall] palm frond and [lowly] reed in a single day.
14 (15) The old and the honored are the head,
while prophets teaching lies are the tail.
15 (16) For those leading this people lead them astray,
and those led by them are destroyed.
16 (17) Therefore Adonai takes no joy in their young men
and has no compassion on their orphans and widows;
for everyone is ungodly and does evil,
every mouth speaks foolishly.
Even after all this, his anger remains,
his upraised hand still threatens.
17 (18) For wickedness burns like fire,
it devours briars and thorns;
it sets the forest underbrush ablaze,
with clouds of smoke whirling upward.
18 (19) The anger of Adonai-Tzva’ot
is burning up the land;
the people, too, are fuel for the fire —
no one spares even his brother.
19 (20) The one on the right grabs but stays hungry,
the one on the left eats but is unfilled.
Everyone devours his own arm’s flesh —
20 (21) M’nasheh devours Efrayim;
and Efrayim, M’nasheh;
while together they oppose Y’hudah.
Even after all this, his anger remains,
his upraised hand still threatens.
10 Woe to those who enact unjust decrees
and draft oppressive legislation
2 to deprive the impoverished of justice
and rob my people’s poor of their rights,
looting widows and preying on orphans!
3 What will you do on the day of punishment,
when calamity comes from afar?
To whom will you flee for help?
Where will you leave your wealth,
4 so as not to squat among the prisoners
or fall among the slain?
Even after all this, his anger remains,
his upraised hand still threatens.
5 “Oh Ashur, the rod expressing my anger!
The club in their hands is my fury!
6 I am sending him against a hypocritical nation,
ordering him to march against a people who enrage me,
to take the spoil and the plunder
and trample them down like mud in the street.
7 That is not what Ashur intends,
that is not what they think;
rather, they mean to destroy,
to cut down nation after nation.
8 For [their king] says,
‘Aren’t all my commanders kings?
9 Hasn’t Kalno [suffered] like Kark’mish,
Hamat like Arpad, Shomron like Dammesek?
10 Just as my hand reached the kingdoms of non-gods,
with more images than in Yerushalayim and Shomron;
11 so won’t I do to Yerushalayim and her non-gods
what I did to Shomron and her idols?’”
12 Therefore when Adonai has done everything he intends to do to Mount Tziyon and Yerushalayim, “I will punish the king of Ashur for the boasting that comes from his proud heart and from reveling in his arrogant looks. 13 For he says,
“‘With my own strong arm I have done this,
and with my wisdom, because I’m so clever!
I erased the boundaries between peoples,
I plundered their stores for the future;
as a mighty man, I subjugated the inhabitants.
14 My hand found the riches of the peoples like a nest;
and as one gathers abandoned eggs,
I gathered the whole earth!
Not one wing fluttered,
not one beak opened or let out a chirp!’”
15 Should the axe glorify itself
over the one who chops with it?
Should the saw magnify itself
over the one who moves it?
It’s as if a stick could wave
the hand that raises it up,
or as if a wooden staff could lift
[a person, who is] not made of wood.
16 Therefore the Lord, Adonai-Tzva’ot,
will send leanness to his well-fed ones;
and in place of his glory,
a fire will be kindled that will burn and burn.
17 The light of Isra’el will become a fire
and his Holy One a flame,
burning and devouring
his thorns and briars in a single day.
18 The glory of his forest
and of his fertile land
he will consume body and soul,
like an invalid wasting away.
19 So few forest trees will remain
that a child could list them.
20 On that day the remnant of Isra’el,
those of the house of Ya‘akov who escaped,
will no longer rely
on the man who struck them down,
but will truly rely on Adonai,
the Holy One of Isra’el.
21 A remnant will return,
the remnant of Ya‘akov,
to the mighty God.
22 For, although your people, Isra’el,
are like the sand of the sea,
only a remnant of them will return.
Destruction is decreed, overflowing with justice.
23 Adonai Elohim-Tzva’ot
will bring about this decreed destruction
throughout all the land.
24 Therefore Adonai Elohim-Tzva’ot says:
“My people living in Tziyon,
don’t be afraid of Ashur,
even when he strikes you with a stick
and raises his staff against you,
the way it was in Egypt.
25 For in but a little while, my fury will end;
and my anger will have destroyed them.”
26 Adonai-Tzva’ot will wield a whip against them, as he did when striking Midyan at the Rock of ‘Orev; as his staff was over the sea, he will raise it, the way it was in Egypt.
27 On that day his burden will fall from your shoulders
and his yoke from your neck;
the yoke will be destroyed
by your prosperity.
28 He has come to ‘Ayat
and passed through Migron.
He has stored his equipment at Mikhmas.
29 They have crossed the pass,
then lodged at Geva.
Ramah is shaking,
Giv‘at-Sha’ul has fled.
30 Cry, shriek, Bat-Gallim!
Listen, Layish! Poor ‘Anatot!
31 Madmenah is in flight,
The people of Gevim take cover.
32 This very day he will stop at Nov;
and he will shake his fist
at the mountain of the daughter of Tziyon,
at the hill of Yerushalayim.
33 See how Adonai Elohim-Tzva’ot
lops off the branches with terrible violence!
The ones standing highest are chopped down,
the lofty are laid low.
34 He will hack down the forest underbrush with an axe,
and the L’vanon in its splendor falls.
11 But a branch will emerge from the trunk of Yishai,
a shoot will grow from his roots.
2 The Spirit of Adonai will rest on him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and power,
the Spirit of knowledge and fearing Adonai —
3 he will be inspired by fearing Adonai.
He will not judge by what his eyes see
or decide by what his ears hear,
4 but he will judge the impoverished justly;
he will decide fairly for the humble of the land.
He will strike the land with a rod from his mouth
and slay the wicked with a breath from his lips.
5 Justice will be the belt around his waist,
faithfulness the sash around his hips.
6 The wolf will live with the lamb;
the leopard lie down with the kid;
calf, young lion and fattened lamb together,
with a little child to lead them.
7 Cow and bear will feed together,
their young will lie down together,
and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
8 An infant will play on a cobra’s hole,
a toddler put his hand in a viper’s nest.
9 They will not hurt or destroy
anywhere on my holy mountain,
for the earth will be as full
of the knowledge of Adonai
as water covering the sea.
10 On that day the root of Yishai,
which stands as a banner for the peoples —
the Goyim will seek him out,
and the place where he rests will be glorious.
11 On that day Adonai will raise his hand
again, a second time,
to reclaim the remnant of his people who remain
from Ashur, Egypt, Patros,
Ethiopia, ‘Eilam, Shin‘ar,
Hamat and the islands in the sea.
12 He will hoist a banner for the Goyim,
assemble the dispersed of Isra’el,
and gather the scattered of Y’hudah
from the four corners of the earth.
13 Efrayim’s jealousy will cease —
those who harass Y’hudah will be cut off,
Efrayim will stop envying Y’hudah,
and Y’hudah will stop provoking Efrayim.
14 They will swoop down on the flank of the P’lishtim to the west.
Together they will pillage the people to the east —
they will put out their hand over Edom and Mo’av,
and the people of ‘Amon will obey them.
15 Adonai will dry up the gulf
of the Egyptian Sea.
He will shake his hand over the [Euphrates] River
to bring a scorching wind,
dividing it into seven streams
and enabling people to cross dryshod.
16 There will be a highway for the remnant of his people
who are still left from Ashur,
just as there was for Isra’el
when he came out from the land of Egypt.
12 On that day you will say:
“I thank you, Adonai,
because, although you were angry at me,
your anger is now turned away;
and you are comforting me.
2 “See! God is my salvation.
I am confident and unafraid;
for Yah Adonai is my strength and my song,
and he has become my salvation!”
3 Then you will joyfully draw water
from the springs of salvation.
4 On that day you will say,
“Give thanks to Adonai! Call on his name!
Make his deeds known among the peoples,
declare how exalted is his name.
5 Sing to Adonai, for he has triumphed —
this is being made known throughout the earth.
6 Shout and sing for joy,
you who live in Tziyon;
for the Holy One of Isra’el
is with you in his greatness!”

The Sign of Immanuel
7 When Ahaz(A) son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin(B) of Aram(C) and Pekah(D) son of Remaliah(E) king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it.
2 Now the house of David(F) was told, “Aram has allied itself with[a] Ephraim(G)”; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken,(H) as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.
3 Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub,[b](I) to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field.(J) 4 Say to him, ‘Be careful, keep calm(K) and don’t be afraid.(L) Do not lose heart(M) because of these two smoldering stubs(N) of firewood—because of the fierce anger(O) of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah.(P) 5 Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s(Q) son have plotted(R) your ruin, saying, 6 “Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.” 7 Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says:(S)
“‘It will not take place,
it will not happen,(T)
8 for the head of Aram is Damascus,(U)
and the head of Damascus is only Rezin.(V)
Within sixty-five years
Ephraim will be too shattered(W) to be a people.
9 The head of Ephraim is Samaria,(X)
and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son.
If you do not stand(Y) firm in your faith,(Z)
you will not stand at all.’”(AA)
10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11 “Ask the Lord your God for a sign,(AB) whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.(AC)”
12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.(AD)”
13 Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David!(AE) Is it not enough(AF) to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience(AG) of my God(AH) also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you[c] a sign:(AI) The virgin[d](AJ) will conceive and give birth to a son,(AK) and[e] will call him Immanuel.[f](AL) 15 He will be eating curds(AM) and honey(AN) when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, 16 for before the boy knows(AO) enough to reject the wrong and choose the right,(AP) the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.(AQ) 17 The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away(AR) from Judah—he will bring the king of Assyria.(AS)”
Assyria, the Lord’s Instrument
18 In that day(AT) the Lord will whistle(AU) for flies from the Nile delta in Egypt and for bees from the land of Assyria.(AV) 19 They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and in the crevices(AW) in the rocks, on all the thornbushes(AX) and at all the water holes. 20 In that day(AY) the Lord will use(AZ) a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River(BA)—the king of Assyria(BB)—to shave your head and private parts, and to cut off your beard(BC) also.(BD) 21 In that day,(BE) a person will keep alive a young cow and two goats.(BF) 22 And because of the abundance of the milk they give, there will be curds to eat. All who remain in the land will eat curds(BG) and honey.(BH) 23 In that day,(BI) in every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels,[g](BJ) there will be only briers and thorns.(BK) 24 Hunters will go there with bow and arrow, for the land will be covered with briers(BL) and thorns. 25 As for all the hills(BM) once cultivated by the hoe, you will no longer go there for fear of the briers and thorns;(BN) they will become places where cattle are turned loose and where sheep run.(BO)
Isaiah and His Children as Signs
8 The Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll(BP) and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.”[h](BQ) 2 So I called in Uriah(BR) the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah as reliable witnesses(BS) for me. 3 Then I made love to the prophetess,(BT) and she conceived and gave birth to a son.(BU) And the Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.(BV) 4 For before the boy knows(BW) how to say ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus(BX) and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.(BY)”
5 The Lord spoke to me again:
6 “Because this people has rejected(BZ)
the gently flowing waters of Shiloah(CA)
and rejoices over Rezin
and the son of Remaliah,(CB)
7 therefore the Lord is about to bring against them
the mighty floodwaters(CC) of the Euphrates—
the king of Assyria(CD) with all his pomp.(CE)
It will overflow all its channels,
run over all its banks(CF)
8 and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it,(CG)
passing through it and reaching up to the neck.
Its outspread wings(CH) will cover the breadth of your land,
Immanuel[i]!”(CI)
9 Raise the war cry,[j](CJ) you nations, and be shattered!(CK)
Listen, all you distant lands.
Prepare(CL) for battle, and be shattered!
Prepare for battle, and be shattered!
10 Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted;(CM)
propose your plan, but it will not stand,(CN)
for God is with us.[k](CO)
11 This is what the Lord says to me with his strong hand upon me,(CP) warning me not to follow(CQ) the way of this people:
12 “Do not call conspiracy(CR)
everything this people calls a conspiracy;
do not fear what they fear,(CS)
and do not dread it.(CT)
13 The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,(CU)
he is the one you are to fear,(CV)
he is the one you are to dread.(CW)
14 He will be a holy place;(CX)
for both Israel and Judah he will be
a stone(CY) that causes people to stumble(CZ)
and a rock that makes them fall.(DA)
And for the people of Jerusalem he will be
a trap and a snare.(DB)
15 Many of them will stumble;(DC)
they will fall and be broken,
they will be snared and captured.”
16 Bind up this testimony of warning(DD)
and seal(DE) up God’s instruction among my disciples.
17 I will wait(DF) for the Lord,
who is hiding(DG) his face from the descendants of Jacob.
I will put my trust in him.(DH)
18 Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me.(DI) We are signs(DJ) and symbols(DK) in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.(DL)
The Darkness Turns to Light
19 When someone tells you to consult(DM) mediums and spiritists,(DN) who whisper and mutter,(DO) should not a people inquire(DP) of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20 Consult God’s instruction(DQ) and the testimony of warning.(DR) If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light(DS) of dawn. 21 Distressed and hungry,(DT) they will roam through the land;(DU) when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse(DV) their king and their God. 22 Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom,(DW) and they will be thrust into utter darkness.(DX)
9 [l]Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom(DY) for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,(DZ) but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—
2 The people walking in darkness(EA)
have seen a great light;(EB)
on those living in the land of deep darkness(EC)
a light has dawned.(ED)
3 You have enlarged the nation(EE)
and increased their joy;(EF)
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
when dividing the plunder.(EG)
4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,(EH)
you have shattered(EI)
the yoke(EJ) that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,(EK)
the rod of their oppressor.(EL)
5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,(EM)
will be fuel for the fire.
6 For to us a child is born,(EN)
to us a son is given,(EO)
and the government(EP) will be on his shoulders.(EQ)
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor,(ER) Mighty God,(ES)
Everlasting(ET) Father,(EU) Prince of Peace.(EV)
7 Of the greatness of his government(EW) and peace(EX)
there will be no end.(EY)
He will reign(EZ) on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice(FA) and righteousness(FB)
from that time on and forever.(FC)
The zeal(FD) of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.
The Lord’s Anger Against Israel
8 The Lord has sent a message(FE) against Jacob;
it will fall on Israel.
9 All the people will know it—
Ephraim(FF) and the inhabitants of Samaria(FG)—
who say with pride
and arrogance(FH) of heart,
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
but we will rebuild with dressed stone;(FI)
the fig(FJ) trees have been felled,
but we will replace them with cedars.(FK)”
11 But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s(FL) foes against them
and has spurred their enemies on.
12 Arameans(FM) from the east and Philistines(FN) from the west
have devoured(FO) Israel with open mouth.
13 But the people have not returned(FR) to him who struck(FS) them,
nor have they sought(FT) the Lord Almighty.
14 So the Lord will cut off from Israel both head and tail,
both palm branch and reed(FU) in a single day;(FV)
15 the elders(FW) and dignitaries(FX) are the head,
the prophets(FY) who teach lies(FZ) are the tail.
16 Those who guide(GA) this people mislead them,
and those who are guided are led astray.(GB)
17 Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,(GC)
nor will he pity(GD) the fatherless and widows,
for everyone is ungodly(GE) and wicked,(GF)
every mouth speaks folly.(GG)
Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
his hand is still upraised.(GH)
18 Surely wickedness burns like a fire;(GI)
it consumes briers and thorns,(GJ)
it sets the forest thickets ablaze,(GK)
so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke.
19 By the wrath(GL) of the Lord Almighty
the land will be scorched(GM)
and the people will be fuel for the fire;(GN)
they will not spare one another.(GO)
20 On the right they will devour,
but still be hungry;(GP)
on the left they will eat,(GQ)
but not be satisfied.
Each will feed on the flesh of their own offspring[m]:
21 Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh;(GR)
together they will turn against Judah.(GS)
Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
his hand is still upraised.(GT)
10 Woe(GU) to those who make unjust laws,
to those who issue oppressive decrees,(GV)
2 to deprive(GW) the poor of their rights
and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people,(GX)
making widows their prey
and robbing the fatherless.(GY)
3 What will you do on the day of reckoning,(GZ)
when disaster(HA) comes from afar?
To whom will you run for help?(HB)
Where will you leave your riches?
4 Nothing will remain but to cringe among the captives(HC)
or fall among the slain.(HD)
Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,(HE)
his hand is still upraised.
God’s Judgment on Assyria
5 “Woe(HF) to the Assyrian,(HG) the rod(HH) of my anger,
in whose hand is the club(HI) of my wrath!(HJ)
6 I send him against a godless(HK) nation,
I dispatch(HL) him against a people who anger me,(HM)
to seize loot and snatch plunder,(HN)
and to trample(HO) them down like mud in the streets.
7 But this is not what he intends,(HP)
this is not what he has in mind;
his purpose is to destroy,
to put an end to many nations.
8 ‘Are not my commanders(HQ) all kings?’ he says.
9 ‘Has not Kalno(HR) fared like Carchemish?(HS)
Is not Hamath(HT) like Arpad,(HU)
and Samaria(HV) like Damascus?(HW)
10 As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols,(HX)
kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria—
11 shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images
as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?(HY)’”
12 When the Lord has finished all his work(HZ) against Mount Zion(IA) and Jerusalem, he will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria(IB) for the willful pride(IC) of his heart and the haughty look(ID) in his eyes. 13 For he says:
“‘By the strength of my hand(IE) I have done this,(IF)
and by my wisdom, because I have understanding.
I removed the boundaries of nations,
I plundered their treasures;(IG)
like a mighty one I subdued[n] their kings.(IH)
14 As one reaches into a nest,(II)
so my hand reached for the wealth(IJ) of the nations;
as people gather abandoned eggs,
so I gathered all the countries;(IK)
not one flapped a wing,
or opened its mouth to chirp.(IL)’”
15 Does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it,
or the saw boast against the one who uses it?(IM)
As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up,
or a club(IN) brandish the one who is not wood!
16 Therefore, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
will send a wasting disease(IO) upon his sturdy warriors;(IP)
under his pomp(IQ) a fire(IR) will be kindled
like a blazing flame.
17 The Light of Israel will become a fire,(IS)
their Holy One(IT) a flame;
in a single day it will burn and consume
his thorns(IU) and his briers.(IV)
18 The splendor of his forests(IW) and fertile fields
it will completely destroy,(IX)
as when a sick person wastes away.
19 And the remaining trees of his forests(IY) will be so few(IZ)
that a child could write them down.
The Remnant of Israel
20 In that day(JA) the remnant of Israel,
the survivors(JB) of Jacob,
will no longer rely(JC) on him
who struck them down(JD)
but will truly rely(JE) on the Lord,
the Holy One of Israel.(JF)
21 A remnant(JG) will return,[o](JH) a remnant of Jacob
will return to the Mighty God.(JI)
22 Though your people be like the sand(JJ) by the sea, Israel,
only a remnant will return.(JK)
Destruction has been decreed,(JL)
overwhelming and righteous.
23 The Lord, the Lord Almighty, will carry out
the destruction decreed(JM) upon the whole land.(JN)
24 Therefore this is what the Lord, the Lord Almighty, says:
“My people who live in Zion,(JO)
do not be afraid(JP) of the Assyrians,
who beat(JQ) you with a rod(JR)
and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did.
25 Very soon(JS) my anger against you will end
and my wrath(JT) will be directed to their destruction.(JU)”
26 The Lord Almighty will lash(JV) them with a whip,
as when he struck down Midian(JW) at the rock of Oreb;
and he will raise his staff(JX) over the waters,(JY)
as he did in Egypt.
27 In that day(JZ) their burden(KA) will be lifted from your shoulders,
their yoke(KB) from your neck;(KC)
the yoke(KD) will be broken
because you have grown so fat.[p]
28 They enter Aiath;
they pass through Migron;(KE)
they store supplies(KF) at Mikmash.(KG)
29 They go over the pass, and say,
“We will camp overnight at Geba.(KH)”
Ramah(KI) trembles;
Gibeah(KJ) of Saul flees.(KK)
30 Cry out, Daughter Gallim!(KL)
Listen, Laishah!
Poor Anathoth!(KM)
31 Madmenah is in flight;
the people of Gebim take cover.
32 This day they will halt at Nob;(KN)
they will shake their fist(KO)
at the mount of Daughter Zion,(KP)
at the hill of Jerusalem.
33 See, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
will lop off(KQ) the boughs with great power.
The lofty trees will be felled,(KR)
the tall(KS) ones will be brought low.(KT)
34 He will cut down(KU) the forest thickets with an ax;
Lebanon(KV) will fall before the Mighty One.(KW)
The Branch From Jesse
11 A shoot(KX) will come up from the stump(KY) of Jesse;(KZ)
from his roots a Branch(LA) will bear fruit.(LB)
2 The Spirit(LC) of the Lord will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom(LD) and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might,(LE)
the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—
3 and he will delight in the fear(LF) of the Lord.
He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,(LG)
or decide by what he hears with his ears;(LH)
4 but with righteousness(LI) he will judge the needy,(LJ)
with justice(LK) he will give decisions for the poor(LL) of the earth.
He will strike(LM) the earth with the rod of his mouth;(LN)
with the breath(LO) of his lips he will slay the wicked.(LP)
5 Righteousness will be his belt(LQ)
and faithfulness(LR) the sash around his waist.(LS)
6 The wolf will live with the lamb,(LT)
the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearling[q] together;
and a little child will lead them.
7 The cow will feed with the bear,
their young will lie down together,
and the lion will eat straw like the ox.(LU)
8 The infant(LV) will play near the cobra’s den,
and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s(LW) nest.
9 They will neither harm nor destroy(LX)
on all my holy mountain,(LY)
for the earth(LZ) will be filled with the knowledge(MA) of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.
10 In that day(MB) the Root of Jesse(MC) will stand as a banner(MD) for the peoples; the nations(ME) will rally to him,(MF) and his resting place(MG) will be glorious.(MH) 11 In that day(MI) the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the surviving remnant(MJ) of his people from Assyria,(MK) from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt,(ML) from Cush,[r](MM) from Elam,(MN) from Babylonia,[s] from Hamath(MO) and from the islands(MP) of the Mediterranean.(MQ)
12 He will raise a banner(MR) for the nations
and gather(MS) the exiles of Israel;(MT)
he will assemble the scattered people(MU) of Judah
from the four quarters of the earth.(MV)
13 Ephraim’s jealousy will vanish,
and Judah’s enemies[t] will be destroyed;
Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah,
nor Judah hostile toward Ephraim.(MW)
14 They will swoop down on the slopes of Philistia(MX) to the west;
together they will plunder the people to the east.(MY)
They will subdue Edom(MZ) and Moab,(NA)
and the Ammonites(NB) will be subject to them.(NC)
15 The Lord will dry up(ND)
the gulf of the Egyptian sea;
with a scorching wind(NE) he will sweep his hand(NF)
over the Euphrates River.(NG)
He will break it up into seven streams
so that anyone can cross over in sandals.(NH)
16 There will be a highway(NI) for the remnant(NJ) of his people
that is left from Assyria,(NK)
as there was for Israel
when they came up from Egypt.(NL)
Songs of Praise
12 In that day(NM) you will say:
“I will praise(NN) you, Lord.
Although you were angry with me,
your anger has turned away(NO)
and you have comforted(NP) me.
2 Surely God is my salvation;(NQ)
I will trust(NR) and not be afraid.
The Lord, the Lord himself,(NS) is my strength(NT) and my defense[u];
he has become my salvation.(NU)”
3 With joy you will draw water(NV)
from the wells(NW) of salvation.
4 In that day(NX) you will say:
“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;(NY)
make known among the nations(NZ) what he has done,
and proclaim that his name is exalted.(OA)
5 Sing(OB) to the Lord, for he has done glorious things;(OC)
let this be known to all the world.
6 Shout aloud and sing for joy,(OD) people of Zion,
for great(OE) is the Holy One of Israel(OF) among you.(OG)”
