Chapter 26
Isaac Inherits the Blessing.[a] 1 A second famine came upon the land (after the first famine in the days of Abraham). Isaac traveled to Gerar to Abimelech, the king of the Philistines. 2 The Lord appeared to him and said, “Do not go down into Egypt; live in the land to which I will direct you. 3 Remain in that land for a while and I will be with you and bless you. I will give all these lands to you and your descendants and fulfill the promise I made to Abraham your father. 4 I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars of the heavens and I will give them all these lands. All the nations on the earth will be blessed through your descendants, 5 for Abraham listened to my voice and observed that which I ordered: my commandments, my ordinances and my laws.” 6 Isaac thus dwelt in Gerar.
7 The men of that place asked him about his wife, and he said, “She is my sister,” for he was afraid to say, “She is my wife,” thinking that the men of that place would kill him because Rebekah was very beautiful.
8 He had been there for quite some time when Abimelech, the king of the Philistines, came to the window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. 9 Abimelech called to Isaac and said, “Surely, she is your wife. Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?”
Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might be killed on her account!”
10 Abimelech continued, “What have you done to us? It would have been easy for one of the people to lie with your wife and that would have brought sin upon us.”
11 Hence, Abimelech gave this order to all the people, “Whoever touches this man or his wife will be put to death!”
12 Isaac planted a crop in a land and that year he reaped a hundredfold. The Lord had thus blessed him. 13 He became important and continued to prosper until he was very rich. 14 He possessed great flocks and herds and slaves, and the Philistines began to become jealous of him.
15 The Dispute over Wells. The Philistines stopped up and filled in with dirt all the wells that the servants of his father had dug in the days of his father Abraham.
16 Abimelech said to Isaac, “Leave us, for you are much mightier than we are.”
17 Isaac went away from there, and camped in the Valley of Gerar and dwelt there. 18 Isaac returned to dig wells that the servants of his father Abraham had dug and that the Philistines had stopped up after the death of Abraham. He gave them the same names as his father had given them.
19 The servants of Isaac dug in the valley and found a well of living waters. 20 But the shepherds of Gerar quarreled with the shepherds of Isaac saying, “The water is ours!” He therefore called the well Esek[b] because they had quarreled with him. 21 They dug another well, but they quarreled over this one as well, and he called it Sitnah.[c] 22 He thus moved away from there and dug another well over which they did not quarrel. He called it Rehoboth[d] and said, “Now the Lord has given us room so that we might prosper in the land.”
23 From there he went to Beer-sheba. 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of Abraham, your father. Do not fear for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants on account of Abraham, my servant.”
25 He built an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord. He pitched his tent there, and his servants dug a well.
26 The Covenant with Abimelech. Abimelech traveled from Gerar with Ahuzzath his friend and Phicol, the commander of his army, to see Isaac. 27 Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, for you hate me and have sent me away from your midst?”
28 They answered him, “We have seen that the Lord is with you and we have said, ‘Let there be an oath between us, between you and us. Let us make a covenant with you 29 that you will not do anything against us, as we have not molested you but were always good to you and let you go away in peace.’ You are now a man blessed by the Lord.”
30 He prepared a meal for them and they ate and drank. 31 Rising early in the morning, they swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac bade them farewell, and they went away in peace.
32 That very day the servants of Isaac arrived and informed him about the well that they had dug saying, “We have found water.” 33 He called the well Shibah.[e] This is the city called Beer-sheba today.
34 Esau’s Hittite Wives.[f] When Esau was forty years old he married Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35 They were a source of bitterness to Isaac and Rebekah.

- Genesis 26:1 The promises and blessings given to Abraham are continued for his son Isaac. The same Yahwist that had transmitted the episode of Abraham in Egypt (Gen 12:10-20) narrates a similar one for his son, but with greater reticence and moral sensitivity. In the idiom of the time, cousins, such as Isaac and Rebekah were, called each other brothers and sisters. The inhabitants of the area were not, properly speaking, Philistines, since the latter immigrated only later on (13th century B.C.); these inhabitants were the Canaanites, who preceded the Philistines.
- Genesis 26:20 Esek: i.e., “Challenge.”
- Genesis 26:21 Sitnah: i.e., “Opposition.”
- Genesis 26:22 Rehoboth: i.e., “Room Enough.”

Спор с филистимлянами о колодцах
12 Исхак засеял поля в той земле и в тот же год собрал урожай стократно, и Вечный благословил его: 13 он разбогател, и состояние его всё росло, пока он не стал очень богатым. 14 У него были такие большие стада мелкого и крупного скота, и столько слуг, что филистимляне завидовали ему. 15 Они засыпали землёй все колодцы, которые ещё во времена его отца выкопали слуги отца его Ибрахима.
16 И Ави-Малик сказал Исхаку:
– Уходи от нас; ты стал слишком силён для нас.
17 Исхак ушёл оттуда, поселился в Герарской долине и обосновался там. 18 Исхак расчистил колодцы, которые были выкопаны во времена его отца Ибрахима, а затем засыпаны филистимлянами после его смерти, и дал им те же названия, какие прежде дал его отец.

25 Исхак построил там жертвенник и призвал имя Вечного, и поставил там шатёр, а его слуги выкопали колодец.
26 Ави-Малик пришёл к нему из Герара вместе с Ахуззатом, своим личным советником, и Фихолом, начальником его войска. 27 Исхак спросил их:
– Зачем вы пришли, ведь вы были враждебны ко мне и прогнали меня?
28 Они ответили:
– Теперь нам ясно, что с тобой Вечный, и мы решили: у нас должно быть клятвенное соглашение, между нами и тобой. Давай заключим договор, 29 что ты не причинишь нам вреда, как и мы не тронули тебя, но всегда обходились с тобой хорошо и отпустили тебя с миром. А теперь ты благословлён Вечным.
30 Исхак устроил для них пир, и они ели и пили. 31 На другой день рано утром они дали друг другу клятву; Исхак простился с ними, и они ушли от него с миром.
32 В тот же день слуги Исхака пришли и рассказали ему о колодце, который они выкопали. Они сказали:
– Мы нашли воду!
33 Он назвал его Шева («клятва»), и до сего дня имя этого города – Беэр-Шева («колодец клятвы», «колодец семи»).
Жёны Есава
34 Когда Есаву было сорок лет, он женился на Иегудифи, дочери хетта Беэри, и на Басемафе, дочери хетта Елона; 35 и от них было много огорчения Исхаку и Рабиге.

Yahweh Establishes the Oath with Isaac
26 Now there was (A)a famine in the land, besides the previous famine that had occurred in the days of Abraham. So Isaac went to Gerar, to (B)Abimelech king of the Philistines. 2 And Yahweh (C)appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; (D)dwell in the land of which I shall tell you. 3 Sojourn in this land, and (E)I will be with you and (F)bless you, for (G)to you and to your seed I will give all these lands, and I will establish (H)the oath which I swore to your father Abraham. 4 (I)And I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and I will give your seed all these lands; and (J)by your seed all the nations of the earth [a]shall be blessed; 5 because Abraham (K)listened to My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”
Isaac and Abimelech
6 So Isaac [b]lived in Gerar. 7 Then the men of the place asked about his wife. And he said, “(L)She is my sister,” for he was (M)afraid to say, “my wife,” thinking, “lest the men of the place kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is (N)beautiful in appearance.” 8 Now it happened, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out through a window and saw, and behold, Isaac was [c]caressing his wife Rebekah. 9 Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, surely she is your wife! How then did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” And Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘Lest I die on account of her.’” 10 (O)And Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.” 11 So Abimelech commanded all the people, saying, “He who (P)touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”
12 And Isaac sowed in that land and [d]reaped in the same year one hundredfold. And (Q)Yahweh blessed him, 13 and the man (R)became great and continued to grow greater until he became very great; 14 and (S)he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and many servants, so that the Philistines were jealous of him. 15 Now (T)all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines stopped up [e]by filling them with earth. 16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are [f](U)too mighty for us.” 17 And Isaac departed from there and camped in the valley of Gerar and [g]settled there.
The Quarrel over the Wells
18 Then Isaac dug again the wells of water which [h]had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, but the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham; and he [i]called them by the same names by which his father had called them. 19 Then Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found there a well of [j]flowing water. 20 And the herdsmen of Gerar (V)contended with the herdsmen of Isaac, saying, “The water is ours!” So he named the well [k]Esek, because they quarreled with him. 21 Then they dug another well, and they contended over it also, so he called it [l]Sitnah. 22 Then he moved away from there and dug another well, and they did not contend over it; so he named it [m]Rehoboth, and he said, “[n](W)At last Yahweh has made [o]room for us, and we will be (X)fruitful in the land.”
23 And he went up from there to (Y)Beersheba. 24 And Yahweh (Z)appeared to him that night and said,
“(AA)I am the God of your father Abraham;
(AB)Do not fear, for I am with you.
I (AC)will bless you and multiply your seed,
For the sake of My servant Abraham.”
25 So he built an (AD)altar there and called upon the name of Yahweh and pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug out a well.
Isaac’s Oath with Abimelech
26 Now (AE)Abimelech came to him from Gerar [p]with his adviser Ahuzzath and Phicol the commander of his army. 27 And Isaac said to them, “(AF)Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?” 28 Then they said, “We see plainly (AG)that Yahweh has been with you; so we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us—between [q]you and us—and let us cut a covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you [r]and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the (AH)blessed of Yahweh.’” 30 Then (AI)he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. 31 In the morning they arose early, and (AJ)each swore to [s]the other; then Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace. 32 Now it happened on that day, that Isaac’s servants came in and told him about the well which they had dug and said to him, “We have found water.” 33 So he called it Shibah; therefore the name of the city is (AK)Beersheba to this day.
34 And Esau was forty years old, (AL)and he took as a wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite; 35 and (AM)they [t]brought bitterness to Isaac and Rebekah.
