Dios hace un pacto con Abram
15 Después de esto, la palabra del Señor vino a Abram en una visión:
«No temas, Abram.
Yo soy tu escudo,
y muy grande será tu recompensa».
2 Pero Abram le respondió:
―Señor y Dios, ¿para qué vas a darme algo, si aún sigo sin tener hijos, y el heredero[a] de mis bienes será Eliezer de Damasco? 3 Como no me has dado ningún hijo, mi herencia la recibirá uno de mis criados.
4 ―¡No! Ese hombre no ha de ser tu heredero —le contestó el Señor—. Tu heredero será tu propio hijo.
5 Luego el Señor lo llevó afuera y le dijo:
―Mira hacia el cielo y cuenta las estrellas, a ver si puedes. ¡Así de numerosa será tu descendencia!
6 Abram creyó al Señor, y el Señor se lo reconoció como justicia. 7 Además, le dijo:
―Yo soy el Señor, que te hice salir de Ur de los caldeos para darte en posesión esta tierra.
8 Pero Abram le preguntó:
―Señor y Dios, ¿cómo sabré que voy a poseerla?
9 El Señor le respondió:
―Tráeme una ternera, una cabra y un carnero, todos ellos de tres años, y también una tórtola y un pichón de paloma.
10 Abram llevó todos estos animales, los partió por la mitad y puso una mitad frente a la otra, pero no partió las aves. 11 Y las aves de rapiña comenzaron a lanzarse sobre los animales muertos, pero Abram las espantaba.
12 Al anochecer, Abram cayó en un profundo sueño, y lo envolvió una oscuridad aterradora. 13 El Señor le dijo:
―Debes saber que tus descendientes vivirán como extranjeros en tierra extraña, donde serán esclavizados y maltratados durante cuatrocientos años. 14 Pero yo castigaré a la nación que los esclavizará, y luego tus descendientes saldrán en libertad y con grandes riquezas. 15 Tú, en cambio, te reunirás en paz con tus antepasados, y te enterrarán cuando ya seas muy anciano. 16 Cuatro generaciones después, tus descendientes volverán a este lugar, porque antes de eso no habrá llegado al colmo la iniquidad de los amorreos.
17 Cuando el sol se puso y cayó la noche, aparecieron una hornilla humeante y una antorcha encendida, las cuales pasaban entre los animales descuartizados. 18 En aquel día el Señor hizo un pacto con Abram. Le dijo:
―A tus descendientes les daré esta tierra, desde el río de Egipto hasta el gran río, el Éufrates. 19 Me refiero a la tierra de los quenitas, los quenizitas, los cadmoneos, 20 los hititas, los ferezeos, los refaítas, 21 los amorreos, los cananeos, los gergeseos y los jebuseos.
Agar e Ismael
16 Saray, la esposa de Abram, no le había dado hijos. Pero, como tenía una esclava egipcia llamada Agar, 2 Saray le dijo a Abram:
―El Señor me ha hecho estéril. Por lo tanto, ve y acuéstate con mi esclava Agar. Tal vez por medio de ella podré tener hijos.
Abram aceptó la propuesta que le hizo Saray. 3 Entonces ella tomó a Agar, la esclava egipcia, y se la entregó a Abram como mujer. Esto ocurrió cuando ya hacía diez años que Abram vivía en Canaán.
4 Abram tuvo relaciones con Agar, y ella concibió un hijo. Al darse cuenta Agar de que estaba embarazada, comenzó a mirar con desprecio a su dueña. 5 Entonces Saray le dijo a Abram:
―¡Tú tienes la culpa de mi afrenta! Yo puse a mi esclava en tus brazos, y ahora que se ve embarazada me mira con desprecio. ¡Que el Señor juzgue entre tú y yo!
6 ―Tu esclava está en tus manos —contestó Abram—; haz con ella lo que bien te parezca.
Y de tal manera comenzó Saray a maltratar a Agar que esta huyó al desierto. 7 Allí, junto a un manantial que está en el camino a la región de Sur, la encontró el ángel del Señor 8 y le preguntó:
―Agar, esclava de Saray, ¿de dónde vienes y a dónde vas?
―Estoy huyendo de mi dueña Saray —respondió ella.
9 ―Vuelve junto a ella y sométete a su autoridad —le dijo el ángel—. 10 De tal manera multiplicaré tu descendencia, que no se podrá contar.
11 »Estás embarazada, y darás a luz un hijo,
y le pondrás por nombre Ismael,[b]
porque el Señor ha escuchado tu aflicción.
12 Será un hombre indómito como asno salvaje.
Luchará contra todos, y todos lucharán contra él;
y vivirá en conflicto con todos sus hermanos».
13 Como el Señor le había hablado, Agar le puso por nombre «El Dios que me ve»,[c] pues se decía: «Ahora he visto al[d] que me ve». 14 Por eso también el pozo que está entre Cades y Béred se conoce con el nombre de «Pozo del Viviente que me ve».[e]
15 Agar le dio a Abram un hijo, a quien Abram llamó Ismael. 16 Abram tenía ochenta y seis años cuando nació Ismael.
El pacto y la circuncisión
17 Cuando Abram tenía noventa y nueve años, el Señor se le apareció y le dijo:
―Yo soy el Dios Todopoderoso. Vive en mi presencia y sé intachable. 2 Así confirmaré mi pacto contigo, y multiplicaré tu descendencia en gran manera.
3 Al oír que Dios le hablaba, Abram cayó rostro en tierra, y Dios continuó:
4 ―Este es el pacto que establezco contigo: Tú serás el padre de una multitud de naciones. 5 Ya no te llamarás Abram,[f] sino que de ahora en adelante tu nombre será Abraham,[g] porque te he confirmado como padre de una multitud de naciones. 6 Te haré tan fecundo que de ti saldrán reyes y naciones. 7 Estableceré mi pacto contigo y con tu descendencia, como pacto perpetuo, por todas las generaciones. Yo seré tu Dios, y el Dios de tus descendientes. 8 A ti y a tu descendencia os daré, en posesión perpetua, toda la tierra de Canaán, donde ahora andas peregrinando. Y yo seré su Dios.
9 Dios también le dijo a Abraham:
―Cumple con mi pacto, tú y toda tu descendencia, por todas las generaciones. 10 Y este es el pacto que establezco contigo y con tu descendencia, y que todos deberéis cumplir: Todos los varones entre vosotros deberán ser circuncidados. 11 Circuncidarán la carne de su prepucio, y esa será la señal del pacto entre nosotros. 12 Todos los varones de cada generación deberán ser circuncidados a los ocho días de nacidos, tanto los niños nacidos en casa como los que hayan sido comprados por dinero a un extranjero y que, por lo tanto, no sean de vuestra estirpe. 13 Todos sin excepción, tanto el nacido en casa como el que haya sido comprado por dinero, deberán ser circuncidados. De esta manera mi pacto quedará como una marca indeleble en vuestra carne, como un pacto perpetuo. 14 Pero el varón incircunciso, al que no se le haya cortado la carne del prepucio, será eliminado de su pueblo por quebrantar mi pacto.
15 También le dijo Dios a Abraham:
―A Saray, tu esposa, ya no la llamarás Saray, sino que su nombre será Sara.[h] 16 Yo la bendeciré, y por medio de ella te daré un hijo. Tanto la bendeciré que será madre de naciones, y de ella surgirán reyes de pueblos.
17 Entonces Abraham inclinó el rostro hasta el suelo y se rio de pensar: «¿Acaso puede un hombre tener un hijo a los cien años, y ser madre Sara a los noventa?» 18 Por eso le dijo a Dios:
―¡Concédele a Ismael vivir bajo tu bendición!
19 A lo que Dios contestó:
―¡Pero es Sara, tu esposa, la que te dará un hijo, al que llamarás Isaac![i] Yo estableceré mi pacto con él y con sus descendientes, como pacto perpetuo. 20 En cuanto a Ismael, ya te he escuchado. Yo lo bendeciré, lo haré fecundo y le daré una descendencia numerosa. Él será el padre de doce príncipes. Haré de él una nación muy grande. 21 Pero mi pacto lo estableceré con Isaac, el hijo que te dará Sara de aquí a un año, por estos días.
22 Cuando Dios terminó de hablar con Abraham, se retiró de su presencia. 23 Ese mismo día Abraham tomó a su hijo Ismael, a los criados nacidos en su casa, a los que había comprado con su dinero y a todos los otros varones que había en su casa, y los circuncidó, tal como Dios se lo había mandado. 24 Abraham tenía noventa y nueve años cuando fue circuncidado, 25 mientras que su hijo Ismael tenía trece. 26 Así que ambos fueron circuncidados el mismo día 27 junto con todos los varones de su casa, tanto los nacidos en ella como los comprados a extranjeros.
La visita del Señor
18 El Señor se le apareció a Abraham junto al encinar de Mamré, cuando Abraham estaba sentado a la entrada de su tienda, a la hora más calurosa del día. 2 Abraham alzó la vista, y vio a tres hombres de pie cerca de él. Al verlos, corrió desde la entrada de la tienda a saludarlos. Inclinándose hasta el suelo, 3 dijo:
―Mi señor, si este tu siervo cuenta con tu favor, te ruego que no pases de largo. 4 Haré que os traigan un poco de agua para que os lavéis los pies, y luego podréis descansar bajo el árbol. 5 Ya que habéis pasado por donde está vuestro siervo, dejadme traeros algo de comer para que os sintáis mejor antes de seguir vuestro camino.
―¡Está bien —respondieron ellos—, hazlo así!
6 Abraham fue rápidamente a la tienda donde estaba Sara y le dijo:
―¡Date prisa! Toma unos veinte kilos[j] de harina fina, amásalos y haz unos panes.
7 Después Abraham fue corriendo adonde estaba el ganado, eligió un ternero bueno y tierno, y se lo dio a su sirviente, quien a toda prisa se puso a prepararlo. 8 Luego les sirvió requesón y leche con el ternero que estaba preparado. Mientras comían, Abraham se quedó de pie junto a ellos, debajo del árbol. 9 Entonces ellos le preguntaron:
―¿Dónde está Sara, tu esposa?
―Allí en la tienda —les respondió.
10 ―Dentro de un año volveré a verte —dijo uno de ellos—, y para entonces tu esposa Sara tendrá un hijo.
Sara estaba escuchando a la entrada de la tienda, a espaldas del que hablaba. 11 Abraham y Sara eran ya bastante ancianos, y Sara ya había dejado de menstruar. 12 Por eso, Sara se rio y pensó: «¿Acaso voy a tener este placer, ahora que ya estoy consumida y mi esposo es tan viejo?» 13 Pero el Señor le dijo a Abraham:
―¿Por qué se ríe Sara? ¿No cree que podrá tener un hijo en su vejez? 14 ¿Acaso hay algo imposible para el Señor? El año que viene volveré a visitarte en esta fecha, y para entonces Sara habrá tenido un hijo.
15 Sara, por su parte, tuvo miedo y mintió al decirle:
―Yo no me estaba riendo.
Pero el Señor le replicó:
―Sí te reíste.
Abraham intercede en favor de Sodoma
16 Luego aquellos visitantes se levantaron y partieron de allí en dirección a Sodoma. Abraham los acompañó para despedirlos. 17 Pero el Señor estaba pensando: «¿Le ocultaré a Abraham lo que voy a hacer? 18 Es un hecho que Abraham se convertirá en una nación grande y poderosa, y en él serán bendecidas todas las naciones de la tierra. 19 Yo lo he elegido para que instruya a sus hijos y a su familia, a fin de que se mantengan en el camino del Señor y pongan en práctica lo que es justo y recto. Así el Señor cumplirá lo que le ha prometido».
20 Entonces el Señor le dijo a Abraham:
―El clamor contra Sodoma y Gomorra resulta ya insoportable, y su pecado es gravísimo. 21 Por eso bajaré, a ver si realmente sus acciones son tan malas como el clamor contra ellas me lo indica; y, si no, he de saberlo.
22 Dos de los visitantes partieron de allí y se encaminaron a Sodoma, pero Abraham se quedó de pie frente al Señor. 23 Entonces se acercó al Señor y le dijo:
―¿De veras vas a exterminar al justo junto con el malvado? 24 Quizá haya cincuenta justos en la ciudad. ¿Exterminarás a todos, y no perdonarás a ese lugar por amor a los cincuenta justos que allí hay? 25 ¡Lejos de ti el hacer tal cosa! ¿Matar al justo junto con el malvado, y que ambos sean tratados de la misma manera? ¡Jamás hagas tal cosa! Tú, que eres el Juez de toda la tierra, ¿no harás justicia?
26 El Señor le respondió:
―Si encuentro cincuenta justos en Sodoma, por ellos perdonaré a toda la ciudad.
27 Abraham le dijo:
―Reconozco que he sido muy atrevido al dirigirme a mi Señor, yo, que apenas soy polvo y ceniza. 28 Pero tal vez falten cinco justos para completar los cincuenta. ¿Destruirás toda la ciudad si faltan esos cinco?
―Si encuentro cuarenta y cinco justos, no la destruiré —contestó el Señor.
29 Pero Abraham insistió:
―Tal vez se encuentren solo cuarenta.
―Por esos cuarenta justos, no destruiré la ciudad —respondió el Señor.
30 Abraham volvió a insistir:
―No se enoje mi Señor, pero permítame seguir hablando. Tal vez se encuentren solo treinta.
―No lo haré si encuentro allí a esos treinta —contestó el Señor.
31 Abraham siguió insistiendo:
―Sé que he sido muy atrevido en hablarle así a mi Señor, pero tal vez se encuentren solo veinte.
―Por esos veinte no la destruiré.
32 Abraham volvió a decir:
―No se enoje mi Señor, pero permítame hablar una vez más. Tal vez se encuentren solo diez…
―Aun por esos diez no la destruiré —respondió el Señor por última vez.
33 Cuando el Señor terminó de hablar con Abraham, se fue de allí, y Abraham regresó a su tienda.
Destrucción de Sodoma y Gomorra
19 Caía la tarde cuando los dos ángeles llegaron a Sodoma. Lot estaba sentado a la entrada de la ciudad. Al verlos, se levantó para recibirlos y se postró rostro en tierra. 2 Les dijo:
―Por favor, señores, os ruego que paséis la noche en la casa de este vuestro siervo. Allí podréis lavaros los pies, y mañana al amanecer seguiréis vuestro camino.
―No, gracias —respondieron ellos—. Pasaremos la noche en la plaza.
3 Pero tanto les insistió Lot que fueron con él y entraron en su casa. Allí Lot les preparó una buena comida y coció panes sin levadura, y ellos comieron.
4 Aún no se habían acostado cuando los hombres de la ciudad de Sodoma rodearon la casa. Todo el pueblo sin excepción, tanto jóvenes como ancianos, estaba allí presente. 5 Llamaron a Lot y le dijeron:
―¿Dónde están los hombres que vinieron a pasar la noche en tu casa? ¡Échalos afuera! ¡Queremos acostarnos con ellos!
6 Lot salió a la puerta y, cerrándola detrás de sí, 7 les dijo:
―Por favor, amigos míos, no cometáis tal perversidad. 8 Tengo dos hijas que todavía son vírgenes; voy a traéroslas para que hagáis con ellas lo que os plazca, pero a estos hombres no les hagáis nada, pues han venido a hospedarse bajo mi techo.
9 ―¡Quítate de ahí! —le contestaron, y añadieron—: Este ni siquiera es de aquí, y ahora nos quiere mandar. ¡Pues ahora te vamos a tratar peor que a ellos!
Entonces se lanzaron contra Lot y se acercaron a la puerta con intenciones de derribarla. 10 Pero los dos hombres extendieron los brazos, metieron a Lot en la casa y cerraron la puerta. 11 Luego, a los jóvenes y ancianos que se agolparon contra la puerta de la casa los dejaron ciegos, de modo que ya no podían encontrar la puerta. 12 Luego le advirtieron a Lot:
―¿Tienes otros familiares aquí? Saca de esta ciudad a tus yernos, hijos, hijas, y a todos los que te pertenezcan, 13 porque vamos a destruirla. El clamor contra esta gente ha llegado hasta el Señor, y ya resulta insoportable. Por eso nos ha enviado a destruirla.
14 Lot salió para hablar con sus futuros yernos, es decir, con los prometidos de sus hijas.
―¡Apresuraos! —les dijo—. ¡Abandonad la ciudad, porque el Señor está a punto de destruirla!
Pero ellos creían que Lot estaba bromeando, 15 así que al amanecer los ángeles insistieron con Lot. Exclamaron:
―¡Apresúrate! Llévate a tu esposa y a tus dos hijas que están aquí, para que no perezcan cuando la ciudad sea castigada.
16 Como Lot titubeaba, los hombres lo tomaron de la mano, lo mismo que a su esposa y a sus dos hijas, y los sacaron de la ciudad, porque el Señor tuvo compasión de ellos. 17 Cuando ya los habían sacado de la ciudad, uno de los ángeles le dijo:
―¡Escápate! No mires hacia atrás, ni te detengas en ninguna parte del valle. Huye hacia las montañas, no sea que perezcas.
18 ―¡No, señor mío, por favor! —respondió Lot—. 19 Tú has visto con buenos ojos a este siervo tuyo, y tu lealtad ha sido grande al salvarme la vida. Pero yo no puedo escaparme a las montañas, no sea que la destrucción me alcance y pierda yo la vida. 20 Cerca de aquí hay una ciudad pequeña, en la que podría refugiarme. ¿Por qué no dejas que me escape hacia allí? Es una ciudad muy pequeña, y en ella me pondré a salvo.
21 ―Está bien —le respondió—; también esta petición te la concederé. No destruiré la ciudad de que hablas. 22 Pero date prisa y huye de una vez, porque no puedo hacer nada hasta que llegues allí.
Por eso aquella ciudad recibió el nombre de Zoar.[k]
23 Lot llegó a Zoar cuando estaba amaneciendo. 24 Entonces el Señor hizo que cayera del cielo una lluvia de fuego y azufre sobre Sodoma y Gomorra. 25 Así destruyó esas ciudades y a todos sus habitantes, junto con toda la llanura y la vegetación del suelo. 26 Pero la esposa de Lot miró hacia atrás, y se quedó convertida en estatua de sal.
27 Al día siguiente, Abraham madrugó y regresó al lugar donde se había encontrado con el Señor. 28 Volvió la mirada hacia Sodoma y Gomorra, y hacia toda la llanura, y vio que de la tierra subía humo, como de un horno.
29 Así arrasó Dios las ciudades de la llanura, pero se acordó de Abraham y sacó a Lot de en medio de la catástrofe que destruyó las ciudades en que había habitado.
Lot y sus hijas
30 Luego, por miedo a quedarse en Zoar, Lot se fue con sus dos hijas a vivir en la región montañosa. Allí vivió con ellas en una cueva. 31 Un día, la hija mayor le dijo a la menor:
―Nuestro padre ya es viejo, y no quedan hombres en esta región para que se casen con nosotras, como es la costumbre de todo el mundo. 32 Ven, vamos a emborracharlo, y nos acostaremos con él; y así, por medio de él tendremos descendencia.
33 Esa misma noche emborracharon a su padre y, sin que este se diera cuenta de nada, la hija mayor fue y se acostó con él. 34 A la mañana siguiente, la mayor le dijo a la menor:
―Mira, anoche me acosté con mi padre. Vamos a emborracharlo de nuevo esta noche, y ahora tú te acostarás con él; y así, por medio de él tendremos descendencia.
35 Esa misma noche volvieron a emborrachar a su padre y, sin que este se diera cuenta de nada, la hija menor fue y se acostó con él. 36 Así las dos hijas de Lot quedaron embarazadas de su padre. 37 La mayor tuvo un hijo, a quien llamó Moab,[l] padre de los actuales moabitas. 38 La hija menor también tuvo un hijo, a quien llamó Ben Amí,[m] padre de los actuales amonitas.
Abraham y Abimélec
20 Abraham partió desde allí en dirección a la región del Néguev, y se quedó a vivir entre Cades y Sur. Mientras vivía en Guerar, 2 Abraham decía que Sara, su esposa, era su hermana. Entonces Abimélec, rey de Guerar, mandó llamar a Sara y la tomó por esposa. 3 Pero aquella noche Dios se le apareció a Abimélec en sueños y le dijo:
―Puedes darte por muerto a causa de la mujer que has tomado, porque ella es casada.
4 Pero, como Abimélec todavía no se había acostado con ella, le contestó:
―Señor, ¿acaso vas a matar al inocente?[n] 5 Como Abraham me dijo que ella era su hermana, y ella me lo confirmó, yo hice todo esto de buena fe y sin mala intención.
6 ―Sí, ya sé que has hecho todo esto de buena fe —le respondió Dios en el sueño—; por eso no te permití tocarla, para que no pecaras contra mí. 7 Pero ahora devuelve esa mujer a su esposo, porque él es profeta y va a interceder por ti para que vivas. Si no lo haces, ten por seguro que morirás junto con todos los tuyos.
8 En la madrugada del día siguiente, Abimélec se levantó y llamó a todos sus servidores para contarles en detalle lo que había ocurrido, y un gran temor se apoderó de ellos. 9 Entonces Abimélec llamó a Abraham y le dijo:
―¡Qué nos has hecho! ¿En qué te he ofendido, que has traído un pecado tan grande sobre mí y sobre mi reino? ¡Lo que me has hecho no tiene nombre! 10 ¿Qué pretendías conseguir con todo esto?
A la pregunta de Abimélec, 11 Abraham contestó:
―Yo pensé que en este lugar no había temor de Dios, y que por causa de mi esposa me matarían. 12 Pero en realidad ella es mi hermana, porque es hija de mi padre, aunque no de mi madre; y además es mi esposa. 13 Cuando Dios me mandó dejar la casa de mi padre y andar errante, yo le dije a mi esposa: “Te pido que me hagas este favor: Dondequiera que vayamos, di siempre que soy tu hermano”.
14 Abimélec tomó entonces ovejas y vacas, esclavos y esclavas, y se los regaló a Abraham. Al mismo tiempo, le devolvió a Sara, su esposa, 15 y le dijo:
―Mira, ahí está todo mi territorio; quédate a vivir donde mejor te parezca.
16 A Sara le dijo:
―Le he dado a tu hermano mil monedas de plata, que servirán de compensación por todo lo que te ha pasado; así quedarás vindicada ante todos los que están contigo.[o]
17 Entonces Abraham oró a Dios, y Dios sanó a Abimélec y permitió que su esposa y sus siervas volvieran a tener hijos, 18 porque, a causa de lo ocurrido con Sara, la esposa de Abraham, el Señor había hecho que todas las mujeres en la casa de Abimélec quedaran estériles.
Nacimiento de Isaac
21 Tal como el Señor lo había dicho, se ocupó de Sara y cumplió con la promesa que le había hecho. 2 Sara quedó embarazada y le dio un hijo a Abraham en su vejez. Esto sucedió en el tiempo anunciado por Dios. 3 Al hijo que Sara le dio, Abraham le puso por nombre Isaac.[p] 4 Cuando su hijo Isaac cumplió ocho días de nacido, Abraham lo circuncidó, tal como Dios le había ordenado. 5 Abraham tenía ya cien años cuando nació su hijo Isaac. 6 Sara dijo entonces: «Dios me ha hecho reír, y todos los que se enteren de que he tenido un hijo se reirán conmigo. 7 ¿Quién le hubiera dicho a Abraham que Sara amamantaría hijos? Sin embargo, le he dado un hijo en su vejez».
Expulsión de Agar e Ismael
8 El niño Isaac creció y fue destetado. Ese mismo día, Abraham hizo un gran banquete. 9 Pero Sara se dio cuenta de que el hijo que Agar la egipcia le había dado a Abraham se burlaba de su hijo Isaac.[q] 10 Por eso le dijo a Abraham:
―¡Echa de aquí a esa esclava y a su hijo! El hijo de esa esclava jamás tendrá parte en la herencia con mi hijo Isaac.
11 Este asunto angustió mucho a Abraham porque se trataba de su propio hijo. 12 Pero Dios le dijo a Abraham: «No te angusties por el muchacho ni por la esclava. Hazle caso a Sara, porque tu descendencia se establecerá por medio de Isaac. 13 Pero también del hijo de la esclava haré una gran nación, porque es hijo tuyo».
14 Al día siguiente, Abraham se levantó de madrugada, tomó un pan y un odre de agua, y se los dio a Agar, poniéndoselos sobre el hombro. Luego le entregó a su hijo y la despidió. Agar partió y anduvo errante por el desierto de Berseba. 15 Cuando se acabó el agua del odre, puso al niño debajo de un arbusto 16 y fue a sentarse sola a cierta distancia,[r] pues pensaba: «No quiero ver morir al niño». En cuanto ella se sentó, comenzó a llorar desconsoladamente.
17 Cuando Dios oyó al niño sollozar, el ángel de Dios llamó a Agar desde el cielo y le dijo: «¿Qué te pasa, Agar? No temas, pues Dios ha escuchado los sollozos del niño. 18 Levántate y tómalo de la mano, que yo haré de él una gran nación».
19 En ese momento Dios le abrió a Agar los ojos, y ella vio un pozo de agua. Pacto entre Abraham y Abimélec
22 En aquel tiempo, Abimélec, que estaba acompañado por Ficol, jefe de su ejército, le dijo a Abraham:
―Dios está contigo en todo lo que haces. 23 Júrame ahora, por Dios mismo, que no me tratarás a mí con falsedad, ni tampoco a mis hijos ni a mis descendientes. Júrame que a mí y al país que te ha recibido como extranjero nos tratarás con la misma lealtad con que yo te he tratado.
24 ―¡Lo juro! —respondió Abraham.
25 Luego Abraham se quejó ante Abimélec por causa de un pozo de agua del cual los siervos de Abimélec se habían apropiado. 26 Pero Abimélec dijo:
―No sé quién pudo haberlo hecho. Me acabo de enterar, pues tú no me lo habías dicho.
27 Entonces Abraham llevó ovejas y vacas, y se las dio a Abimélec, y los dos hicieron un pacto. 28 Pero Abraham apartó siete corderas del rebaño, 29 por lo que Abimélec le preguntó:
―¿Qué pasa? ¿Por qué has apartado estas siete corderas?
30 ―Acepta estas siete corderas —le contestó Abraham—. Ellas servirán de prueba de que yo cavé este pozo.
31 Por eso a aquel lugar le dieron el nombre de Berseba,[s] porque allí los dos hicieron un juramento.
32 Después de haber hecho el pacto en Berseba, Abimélec y Ficol, el jefe de su ejército, volvieron al país de los filisteos. 33 Abraham plantó un tamarisco en Berseba, y en ese lugar invocó el nombre del Señor, el Dios eterno. 34 Y se quedó en el país de los filisteos durante mucho tiempo.

The Lord’s Covenant With Abram
15 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram(A) in a vision:(B)
2 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(F) what can you give me since I remain childless(G) and the one who will inherit[c] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?(H)” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant(I) in my household(J) will be my heir.”
4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.(K)” 5 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars(L)—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring[d] be.”(M)
6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.(N)
7 He also said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out(O) of Ur of the Chaldeans(P) to give you this land to take possession of it.”(Q)
8 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(R) how can I know(S) that I will gain possession of it?”(T)
9 So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer,(U) a goat and a ram, each three years old,(V) along with a dove and a young pigeon.(W)”
10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other;(X) the birds, however, he did not cut in half.(Y) 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses,(Z) but Abram drove them away.
12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,(AA) and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years(AB) your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved(AC) and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out(AD) with great possessions.(AE) 15 You, however, will go to your ancestors(AF) in peace and be buried at a good old age.(AG) 16 In the fourth generation(AH) your descendants will come back here,(AI) for the sin of the Amorites(AJ) has not yet reached its full measure.”
17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch(AK) appeared and passed between the pieces.(AL) 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram(AM) and said, “To your descendants I give this land,(AN) from the Wadi[e] of Egypt(AO) to the great river, the Euphrates(AP)— 19 the land of the Kenites,(AQ) Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites,(AR) Perizzites,(AS) Rephaites,(AT) 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”(AU)
Hagar and Ishmael
16 Now Sarai,(AV) Abram’s wife, had borne him no children.(AW) But she had an Egyptian slave(AX) named Hagar;(AY) 2 so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children.(AZ) Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”(BA)
Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan(BB) ten years,(BC) Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar,(BD) and she conceived.
When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.(BE) 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”(BF)
6 “Your slave is in your hands,(BG)” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated(BH) Hagar; so she fled from her.
7 The angel of the Lord(BI) found Hagar near a spring(BJ) in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.(BK) 8 And he said, “Hagar,(BL) slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”(BM)
“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.
9 Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”(BN)
11 The angel of the Lord(BO) also said to her:
“You are now pregnant
and you will give birth to a son.(BP)
You shall name him(BQ) Ishmael,[f](BR)
for the Lord has heard of your misery.(BS)
12 He will be a wild donkey(BT) of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
toward[g] all his brothers.(BU)”
13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,(BV)” for she said, “I have now seen[h] the One who sees me.”(BW) 14 That is why the well(BX) was called Beer Lahai Roi[i];(BY) it is still there, between Kadesh(BZ) and Bered.
15 So Hagar(CA) bore Abram a son,(CB) and Abram gave the name Ishmael(CC) to the son she had borne. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old(CD) when Hagar bore him Ishmael.
The Covenant of Circumcision
17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old,(CE) the Lord appeared to him(CF) and said, “I am God Almighty[j];(CG) walk before me faithfully and be blameless.(CH) 2 Then I will make my covenant between me and you(CI) and will greatly increase your numbers.”(CJ)
3 Abram fell facedown,(CK) and God said to him, 4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you:(CL) You will be the father of many nations.(CM) 5 No longer will you be called Abram[k]; your name will be Abraham,[l](CN) for I have made you a father of many nations.(CO) 6 I will make you very fruitful;(CP) I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.(CQ) 7 I will establish my covenant(CR) as an everlasting covenant(CS) between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God(CT) and the God of your descendants after you.(CU) 8 The whole land of Canaan,(CV) where you now reside as a foreigner,(CW) I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you;(CX) and I will be their God.(CY)”
9 Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant,(CZ) you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.(DA) 10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.(DB) 11 You are to undergo circumcision,(DC) and it will be the sign of the covenant(DD) between me and you. 12 For the generations to come(DE) every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised,(DF) including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring. 13 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised.(DG) My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.(DH) 14 Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised(DI) in the flesh, will be cut off from his people;(DJ) he has broken my covenant.(DK)”
15 God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai(DL) your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.(DM) 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her.(DN) I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations;(DO) kings of peoples will come from her.”
17 Abraham fell facedown;(DP) he laughed(DQ) and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old?(DR) Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?”(DS) 18 And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael(DT) might live under your blessing!”(DU)
19 Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son,(DV) and you will call him Isaac.[m](DW) I will establish my covenant with him(DX) as an everlasting covenant(DY) for his descendants after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers.(DZ) He will be the father of twelve rulers,(EA) and I will make him into a great nation.(EB) 21 But my covenant(EC) I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you(ED) by this time next year.”(EE) 22 When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.(EF)
23 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household(EG) or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him.(EH) 24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old(EI) when he was circumcised,(EJ) 25 and his son Ishmael(EK) was thirteen; 26 Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day. 27 And every male in Abraham’s household(EL), including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.
The Three Visitors
18 The Lord appeared to Abraham(EM) near the great trees of Mamre(EN) while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent(EO) in the heat of the day. 2 Abraham looked up(EP) and saw three men(EQ) standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.(ER)
3 He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(ES) my lord,[n] do not pass your servant(ET) by. 4 Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet(EU) and rest under this tree. 5 Let me get you something to eat,(EV) so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant.”
“Very well,” they answered, “do as you say.”
6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “Quick,” he said, “get three seahs[o] of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.”(EW)
7 Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf(EX) and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. 8 He then brought some curds(EY) and milk(EZ) and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them.(FA) While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.
9 “Where is your wife Sarah?”(FB) they asked him.
“There, in the tent,(FC)” he said.
10 Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year,(FD) and Sarah your wife will have a son.”(FE)
Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah were already very old,(FF) and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.(FG) 12 So Sarah laughed(FH) to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord(FI) is old, will I now have this pleasure?”
13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’(FJ) 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord?(FK) I will return to you at the appointed time next year,(FL) and Sarah will have a son.”(FM)
15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.”
But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”
Abraham Pleads for Sodom
16 When the men(FN) got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. 17 Then the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham(FO) what I am about to do?(FP) 18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation,(FQ) and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.[p] 19 For I have chosen him(FR), so that he will direct his children(FS) and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord(FT) by doing what is right and just,(FU) so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”(FV)
20 Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom(FW) and Gomorrah is so great(FX) and their sin so grievous(FY) 21 that I will go down(FZ) and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”
22 The men(GA) turned away and went toward Sodom,(GB) but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.[q](GC) 23 Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?(GD) 24 What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare[r] the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?(GE) 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing(GF)—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous(GG) and the wicked alike.(GH) Far be it from you! Will not the Judge(GI) of all the earth do right?”(GJ)
26 The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.(GK)”
27 Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,(GL) 28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?”
“If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”
29 Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?”
He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”
30 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry,(GM) but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?”
He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
31 Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?”
He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”
32 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more.(GN) What if only ten can be found there?”
He answered, “For the sake of ten,(GO) I will not destroy it.”
33 When the Lord had finished speaking(GP) with Abraham, he left,(GQ) and Abraham returned home.(GR)
Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed
19 The two angels(GS) arrived at Sodom(GT) in the evening, and Lot(GU) was sitting in the gateway of the city.(GV) When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.(GW) 2 “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet(GX) and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”
“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”(GY)
3 But he insisted(GZ) so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house.(HA) He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast,(HB) and they ate.(HC) 4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom(HD)—both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”(HE)
6 Lot went outside to meet them(HF) and shut the door behind him 7 and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”(HG)
9 “Get out of our way,” they replied. “This fellow came here as a foreigner,(HH) and now he wants to play the judge!(HI) We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.
10 But the men(HJ) inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. 11 Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness(HK) so that they could not find the door.
12 The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you?(HL) Get them out of here, 13 because we(HM) are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great(HN) that he has sent us to destroy it.”(HO)
14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry[s] his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!(HP)” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.(HQ)
15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away(HR) when the city is punished.(HS)”
16 When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters(HT) and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them.(HU) 17 As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives!(HV) Don’t look back,(HW) and don’t stop anywhere in the plain!(HX) Flee to the mountains(HY) or you will be swept away!”
18 But Lot said to them, “No, my lords,[t] please! 19 Your[u] servant has found favor in your[v] eyes,(HZ) and you[w] have shown great kindness(IA) to me in sparing my life. But I can’t flee to the mountains;(IB) this disaster will overtake me, and I’ll die. 20 Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small, isn’t it? Then my life will be spared.”
21 He said to him, “Very well, I will grant this request(IC) too; I will not overthrow the town you speak of. 22 But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it.” (That is why the town was called Zoar.[x](ID))
23 By the time Lot reached Zoar,(IE) the sun had risen over the land. 24 Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur(IF) on Sodom and Gomorrah(IG)—from the Lord out of the heavens.(IH) 25 Thus he overthrew those cities(II) and the entire plain,(IJ) destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land.(IK) 26 But Lot’s wife looked back,(IL) and she became a pillar of salt.(IM)
27 Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord.(IN) 28 He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.(IO)
29 So when God destroyed the cities of the plain,(IP) he remembered(IQ) Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe(IR) that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.(IS)
Lot and His Daughters
30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar(IT) and settled in the mountains,(IU) for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. 31 One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth. 32 Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line(IV) through our father.”(IW)
33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.(IX)
34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.”(IY) 35 So they got their father to drink wine(IZ) that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.(JA)
36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.(JB) 37 The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab[y];(JC) he is the father of the Moabites(JD) of today. 38 The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi[z]; he is the father of the Ammonites[aa](JE) of today.
Abraham and Abimelek(JF)
20 Now Abraham moved on from there(JG) into the region of the Negev(JH) and lived between Kadesh(JI) and Shur.(JJ) For a while(JK) he stayed in Gerar,(JL) 2 and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.(JM)” Then Abimelek(JN) king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.(JO)
3 But God came to Abimelek(JP) in a dream(JQ) one night and said to him, “You are as good as dead(JR) because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman.”(JS)
4 Now Abimelek had not gone near her, so he said, “Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation?(JT) 5 Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister,(JU)’ and didn’t she also say, ‘He is my brother’? I have done this with a clear conscience(JV) and clean hands.(JW)”
6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept(JX) you from sinning against me.(JY) That is why I did not let you touch her. 7 Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet,(JZ) and he will pray for you(KA) and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.”(KB)
8 Early the next morning Abimelek summoned all his officials, and when he told them all that had happened, they were very much afraid. 9 Then Abimelek called Abraham in and said, “What have you done to us? How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.(KC)” 10 And Abimelek asked Abraham, “What was your reason for doing this?”
11 Abraham replied, “I said to myself, ‘There is surely no fear of God(KD) in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’(KE) 12 Besides, she really is my sister,(KF) the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife. 13 And when God had me wander(KG) from my father’s household,(KH) I said to her, ‘This is how you can show your love to me: Everywhere we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”
14 Then Abimelek(KI) brought sheep and cattle and male and female slaves and gave them to Abraham,(KJ) and he returned Sarah his wife to him. 15 And Abimelek said, “My land is before you; live wherever you like.”(KK)
16 To Sarah he said, “I am giving your brother a thousand shekels[ab] of silver. This is to cover the offense against you before all who are with you; you are completely vindicated.”
17 Then Abraham prayed to God,(KL) and God healed Abimelek, his wife and his female slaves so they could have children again, 18 for the Lord had kept all the women in Abimelek’s household from conceiving because of Abraham’s wife Sarah.(KM)
The Birth of Isaac
21 Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah(KN) as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.(KO) 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son(KP) to Abraham in his old age,(KQ) at the very time God had promised him.(KR) 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac[ac](KS) to the son Sarah bore him. 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him,(KT) as God commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old(KU) when his son Isaac was born to him.
6 Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter,(KV) and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” 7 And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”(KW)
Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away
8 The child grew and was weaned,(KX) and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast. 9 But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham(KY) was mocking,(KZ) 10 and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman(LA) and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”(LB)
11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.(LC) 12 But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring[ad] will be reckoned.(LD) 13 I will make the son of the slave into a nation(LE) also, because he is your offspring.”
14 Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar.(LF) He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.(LG)
15 When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” And as she sat there, she[ae] began to sob.(LH)
17 God heard the boy crying,(LI) and the angel of God(LJ) called to Hagar from heaven(LK) and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid;(LL) God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.(LM)”
19 Then God opened her eyes(LN) and she saw a well of water.(LO) So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
20 God was with the boy(LP) as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer. 21 While he was living in the Desert of Paran,(LQ) his mother got a wife for him(LR) from Egypt.
The Treaty at Beersheba
22 At that time Abimelek(LS) and Phicol the commander of his forces(LT) said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do.(LU) 23 Now swear(LV) to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants.(LW) Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you.”(LX)
24 Abraham said, “I swear it.”
25 Then Abraham complained to Abimelek about a well of water that Abimelek’s servants had seized.(LY) 26 But Abimelek said, “I don’t know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today.”
27 So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelek, and the two men made a treaty.(LZ) 28 Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock, 29 and Abimelek asked Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?”
30 He replied, “Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness(MA) that I dug this well.(MB)”
31 So that place was called Beersheba,[af](MC) because the two men swore an oath(MD) there.
32 After the treaty(ME) had been made at Beersheba,(MF) Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces(MG) returned to the land of the Philistines.(MH) 33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree(MI) in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord,(MJ) the Eternal God.(MK) 34 And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines(ML) for a long time.
