Materials of the Tabernacle

21 [a]This is the inventory of the tabernacle, (A)the tabernacle of the Testimony, which was counted according to the commandment of Moses, for the service of the Levites, (B)by the hand of (C)Ithamar, son of Aaron the priest.

22 (D)Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made all that the Lord had commanded Moses. 23 And with him was (E)Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, an engraver and [b]designer, a weaver of blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and of fine linen.

24 All the gold that was used in all the work of the holy place, that is, the gold of the (F)offering, was twenty-nine talents and seven hundred and thirty shekels, according to (G)the shekel of the sanctuary. 25 And the silver from those who were (H)numbered of the congregation was one hundred talents and one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary: 26 (I)a bekah for [c]each man (that is, half a shekel, according to the shekel of the sanctuary), for everyone included in the numbering from twenty years old and above, for (J)six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty men. 27 And from the hundred talents of silver were cast (K)the sockets of the sanctuary and the bases of the veil: one hundred sockets from the hundred talents, one talent for each socket. 28 Then from the one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five shekels he made hooks for the pillars, overlaid their capitals, and (L)made bands for them.

29 The offering of bronze was seventy talents and two thousand four hundred shekels. 30 And with it he made the sockets for the door of the tabernacle of meeting, the bronze altar, the bronze grating for it, and all the utensils for the altar, 31 the sockets for the court all around, the bases for the court gate, all the pegs for the tabernacle, and all the pegs for the court all around.

The Cost of the Tabernacle

21 [a]This is the number of the things for the [b]tabernacle, the [c]tabernacle of the testimony, as they were [d]counted according to the [e]command of Moses, for the service of the Levites, by the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. 22 Now (A)Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made everything that the Lord had commanded Moses. 23 With him was (B)Oholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, an engraver and a skilled embroiderer, and a [f]weaver in violet, in purple, and in scarlet material, and fine linen.

24 All the gold that was used for the work, in all the work of the sanctuary, [g]which was the gold of the wave offering, was twenty-nine [h]talents and 730 [i]shekels, according to (C)the shekel of the sanctuary. 25 And (D)the silver of those of the congregation who were [j]counted was a hundred talents and 1,775 shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary; 26 (E)a beka a head (that is, half a shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary), assessed to each one who passed over to those who were [k]counted, from twenty years old and upward, for (F)603,550 men. 27 The hundred talents of silver were used for casting the bases of the sanctuary and the bases of the veil; a hundred bases for the hundred talents, a talent for a base. 28 And of the 1,775 shekels, he made hooks for the pillars, and overlaid their tops and made [l]bands for them. 29 And the bronze of the wave offering was seventy talents and 2,400 shekels. 30 With it he made the bases to the doorway of the tent of meeting, and the bronze altar and its bronze grating, and all the utensils of the altar, 31 and the bases of the courtyard all around and the bases of the gate of the courtyard, and all the pegs of the [m]tabernacle and all the pegs of the courtyard all around.

21 The Materials Used.[a] These are the expenses for the tabernacle, the dwelling place of the Testimony, that Moses ordered the Levites to calculate under the direction of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest. 22 Bezalel, the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, completed what the Lord had commanded Moses to do. 23 He did this together with Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, who was an engraver and a skillful craftsman, and a weaver of blue, purple, and scarlet cloth and fine twisted linen.

24 All the gold that was used in the work—that is, for all the work of the sanctuary, which was the gold from the offering—was twenty-nine talents and seven hundred and thirty shekels, measured by the shekel of the sanctuary. 25 The silver of the assembly was measured to be one hundred talents and one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five shekels, measured by the shekel of the sanctuary. 26 Every person who was counted in the census twenty years old and up gave a bekah, which is worth a half-shekel according to the measure of the sanctuary. There were six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty men. 27 The one hundred talents were used to make the bases of the sanctuary and the bases for the veil. One hundred talents were used for the one hundred bases, or one talent for each base. 28 The one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five shekels were used for the hooks for the pillars, and for overlaying and filleting their tops. 29 The bronze presented in the offering amounted to seventy talents and two thousand four hundred shekels. 30 With it were made the bases for the entrance to the meeting tent, the altar of bronze with the netting of bronze, and all the accessories for the altar, 31 the bases for the courtyard, the bases for the gate to the courtyard, and all the pegs of the tabernacle and all the pegs of the surrounding courtyard.

  1. Exodus 38:21 According to the account, a ton of gold and five tons of silver were used; the figures are certainly exaggerated in order to make the point that there is no such thing as too much beauty when it comes to honoring the presence of God in the midst of humanity.
