1 Dopo la morte di Acab Moab si ribellò a Israele.
2 Acazia cadde dalla finestra del piano di sopra in Samaria e rimase ferito. Allora inviò messaggeri con quest'ordine: «Andate e interrogate Baal-Zebub, dio di Ekròn, per sapere se guarirò da questa infermità». 3 Ora l'angelo del Signore disse a Elia il Tisbita: «Su, và incontro ai messaggeri del re di Samaria. Dì loro: Non c'è forse un Dio in Israele, perché andiate a interrogare Baal-Zebub, dio di Ekròn? 4 Pertanto così dice il Signore: Dal letto, in cui sei salito, non scenderai, ma di certo morirai». Ed Elia se ne andò.
5 I messaggeri ritornarono dal re, che domandò loro: «Perché siete tornati?». 6 Gli dissero: «Ci è venuto incontro un uomo, che ci ha detto: Su, tornate dal re che vi ha inviati e ditegli: Così dice il Signore: Non c'è forse un Dio in Israele, perché tu mandi a interrogare Baal-Zebub, dio di Ekròn? Pertanto, dal letto, in cui sei salito, non scenderai, ma di certo morirai». 7 Domandò loro: «Com'era l'uomo che vi è venuto incontro e vi ha detto simili parole?». 8 Risposero: «Era un uomo peloso; una cintura di cuoio gli cingeva i fianchi». Egli disse: «Quello è Elia il Tisbita!».
9 Allora gli mandò il capo di una cinquantina con i suoi cinquanta uomini. Questi andò da lui, che era seduto sulla cima del monte, e gli disse: «Uomo di Dio, il re ti ordina di scendere!». 10 Elia rispose al capo della cinquantina: «Se sono uomo di Dio, scenda il fuoco dal cielo e divori te e i tuoi cinquanta». Scese un fuoco dal cielo e divorò quello con i suoi cinquanta. 11 Il re mandò da lui ancora un altro capo di una cinquantina con i suoi cinquanta uomini. Questi andò da lui e gli disse: «Uomo di Dio, il re ti ordina di scendere subito». 12 Elia rispose: «Se sono uomo di Dio, scenda un fuoco dal cielo e divori te e i tuoi cinquanta». Scese un fuoco dal cielo e divorò quello con i suoi cinquanta. 13 Il re mandò ancora un terzo capo con i suoi cinquanta uomini. Questo terzo capo di una cinquantina andò, si inginocchiò davanti ad Elia e supplicò: «Uomo di Dio, valgano qualche cosa ai tuoi occhi la mia vita e la vita di questi tuoi cinquanta servi. 14 Ecco è sceso il fuoco dal cielo e ha divorato i due altri capi di cinquantina con i loro uomini. Ora la mia vita valga qualche cosa ai tuoi occhi».
15 L'angelo del Signore disse a Elia: «Scendi con lui e non aver paura di lui». Si alzò e scese con lui dal re 16 e gli disse: «Così dice il Signore: Poiché hai mandato messaggeri a consultare Baal-Zebub, dio di Ekròn, come se in Israele ci fosse, fuori di me, un Dio da interrogare, per questo, dal letto, su cui sei salito, non scenderai, ma certamente morirai». 17 Difatti morì, secondo la predizione fatta dal Signore per mezzo di Elia e al suo posto divenne re suo fratello Ioram, nell'anno secondo di Ioram figlio di Giòsafat, re di Giuda, perché egli non aveva figli.

1 And Moab transgresseth against Israel after the death of Ahab,
2 and Ahaziah falleth through the lattice in his upper chamber that [is] in Samaria, and is sick, and sendeth messengers, and saith unto them, `Go ye, inquire of Baal-Zebub god of Ekron if I recover from this sickness.'
3 And a messenger of Jehovah hath spoken unto Elijah the Tishbite, `Rise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and speak unto them, Is it because there is not a God in Israel -- ye are going to inquire of Baal Zebub god of Ekron?
4 and therefore, thus said Jehovah, The bed whither thou hast gone up, thou dost not come down from it, for thou dost certainly die;' and Elijah goeth on.
5 And the messengers turn back unto him, and he saith unto them, `What [is] this -- ye have turned back!'
6 And they say unto him, `A man hath come up to meet us, and saith unto us, Go, turn back unto the king who sent you, and ye have said unto him, Thus said Jehovah, Is it because there is not a God in Israel -- thou art sending to inquire of Baal-Zebub god of Ekron? therefore, the bed whither thou hast gone up, thou dost not come down from it, for thou dost certainly die.'
7 And he saith unto them, `What [is] the fashion of the man who hath come up to meet you, and speaketh unto you these words?'
8 And they say unto him, `A man -- hairy, and a girdle of skin girt about his loins;' and he saith, `He [is] Elijah the Tishbite.'
9 And he sendeth unto him a head of fifty and his fifty, and he goeth up unto him (and lo, he is sitting on the top of the hill), and he speaketh unto him, `O man of God, the king hath spoken, Come down.'
10 And Elijah answereth and speaketh unto the head of the fifty, `And if I [am] a man of God, fire doth come down from the heavens, and consume thee and thy fifty;' and fire cometh down from the heavens, and consumeth him and his fifty.
11 And he turneth and sendeth unto him another head of fifty and his fifty, and he answereth and speaketh unto him, `O man of God, thus said the king, Haste, come down.'
12 And Elijah answereth and speaketh unto them, `If I [am] a man of God, fire doth come down from the heavens, and consume thee and thy fifty;' and fire of God cometh down from the heavens, and consumeth him and his fifty.
13 And he turneth and sendeth a third head of fifty and his fifty, and the third head of fifty goeth up, and cometh in, and boweth on his knees over-against Elijah, and maketh supplication unto him, and speaketh unto him, `O man of God, let be precious, I pray thee, my soul and the soul of thy servants -- these fifty -- in thine eyes.
14 Lo, come down hath fire from the heavens, and consumeth the two heads of the former fifties and their fifties; and, now, let my soul be precious in thine eyes.'
15 And a messenger of Jehovah speaketh unto Elijah, `Go down with him, be not afraid of him;' and he riseth and goeth down with him unto the king,
16 and speaketh unto him, `Thus said Jehovah, Because that thou hast sent messengers to inquire of Baal-Zebub god of Ekron -- is it because there is not a God in Israel to inquire of His word? therefore, the bed whither thou hast gone up -- thou dost not come down from it, for thou dost certainly die.'
17 And he dieth, according to the word of Jehovah that Elijah spake, and Jehoram reigneth in his stead, in the second year of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, for he had no son.
18 And the rest of the matters of Ahaziah that he did, are they not written on the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?

Allora inviò dei messaggeri, dicendo loro: «Andate a consultare *Baal-Zebub, dio di Ecron, per sapere se guarirò da questa malattia». 3 Ma un angelo del Signore disse a *Elia il Tisbita: «Àlzati, va' incontro ai messaggeri del re di Samaria, e di' loro: È forse perché non c'è Dio in Israele che voi andate a consultare Baal-Zebub, dio di Ecron? 4 Perciò, cosí dice il Signore: Tu non scenderai dal letto sul quale sei salito, ma certamente morrai». Ed Elia se ne andò.
5 I messaggeri tornarono da Acazia, il quale disse loro: «Perché siete tornati?» 6 E quelli risposero: «Un uomo ci è venuto incontro, e ci ha detto: “Andate, tornate dal re che vi ha mandati, e ditegli: «Cosí dice il Signore: È forse perché non c'è Dio in Israele che tu mandi a consultare Baal-Zebub dio di Ecron? Perciò non scenderai dal letto sul quale sei salito, ma certamente morirai»”». 7 Acazia chiese loro: «Com'era l'uomo che vi è venuto incontro e vi ha detto queste parole?» 8 Quelli gli risposero: «Era un uomo vestito di pelo, con una cintura di cuoio intorno ai fianchi». E Acazia disse: «È Elia il Tisbita!»
9 Allora mandò da Elia un capitano con i suoi cinquanta uomini. Egli salí e trovò Elia seduto in cima al monte. Il capitano gli disse: «Uomo di Dio, il re dice: “Scendi!”» 10 Elia rispose e disse al capitano dei cinquanta: «Se io sono un uomo di Dio, scenda del fuoco dal cielo, e consumi te e i tuoi cinquanta uomini!» E dal cielo scese il fuoco di Dio che consumò lui e i suoi cinquanta uomini.
11 Acazia mandò di nuovo un altro capitano con i suoi cinquanta uomini, il quale si rivolse a Elia e gli disse: «Uomo di Dio, il re dice: “Fa' presto, scendi!”» 12 Elia rispose e disse loro: «Se io sono un uomo di Dio, scenda del fuoco dal cielo, e consumi te e i tuoi cinquanta uomini». E dal cielo scese il fuoco di Dio che consumò lui e i suoi cinquanta uomini.
13 Acazia mandò di nuovo un terzo capitano con i suoi cinquanta uomini. Questo terzo capitano di cinquanta uomini salí da Elia; e, giunto presso di lui, gli si gettò davanti in ginocchio, e lo supplicò, dicendo: «Uomo di Dio, ti prego, la mia vita e la vita di questi cinquanta tuoi servi sia preziosa agli occhi tuoi! 14 Un fuoco è sceso dal cielo, e ha consumato i due primi capitani con i loro uomini; ma ora la vita mia sia preziosa agli occhi tuoi».
15 L'angelo del Signore disse a Elia: «Scendi con lui; non aver paura di lui». Allora Elia si alzò, scese con il capitano, andò dal re, 16 e gli disse: «Cosí dice il Signore: Poiché tu hai mandato dei messaggeri a consultare Baal-Zebub, dio d'Ecron, come se in Israele non ci fosse Dio da poter consultare, perciò tu non scenderai dal letto sul quale ti sei coricato, ma certamente morrai».
17 Acazia morí, secondo la parola del Signore, pronunziata da Elia; e Ieoram cominciò a regnare al suo posto l'anno secondo di Ieoram, figlio di Giosafat, re di *Giuda, perché Acazia non aveva figli.

1 Then Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.
2 And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease.
3 But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron?
4 Now therefore thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. And Elijah departed.
5 And when the messengers turned back unto him, he said unto them, Why are ye now turned back?
6 And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that thou sendest to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron? therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
7 And he said unto them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words?
8 And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite.
9 Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill. And he spake unto him, Thou man of God, the king hath said, Come down.
10 And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
11 Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, O man of God, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly.
12 And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
13 And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.
14 Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and burnt up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties: therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight.
15 And the angel of the Lord said unto Elijah, Go down with him: be not afraid of him. And he arose, and went down with him unto the king.
16 And he said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
17 So he died according to the word of the Lord which Elijah had spoken. And Jehoram reigned in his stead in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah; because he had no son.
18 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
