Samuel och Saul

(8:1—15:35)

Saul blir Israels kung

Folket vill ha en kung

8 När Samuel blev äldre, tillsatte han sina söner som domare över Israel. 2 Hans äldste son Joel och hans näst äldste son Avia dömde i Beer Sheva, 3 men de följde inte alls i sin fars fotspår utan sökte egen orätt vinning: de tog emot mutor och vrängde rättvisan. 4 Alla Israels äldste möttes i Rama hos Samuel. 5 De sa: ”Du har blivit gammal och dina söner följer inte i dina fotspår. Ge oss en kung som kan styra oss, så som alla andra folk har!”

6 Samuel blev besviken när han hörde att de ville ha en kung och bad till Herren. 7 Men Herren svarade: ”Låt dem få vad de vill ha! Det är mig de förkastar, inte dig. De vill inte längre ha mig till kung. 8 Ända sedan jag förde dem ut ur Egypten har de gång på gång vänt mig ryggen och följt andra gudar och nu behandlar de dig på samma sätt. 9 Gör som folket vill, men varna dem för hur det kommer att bli att lyda under en kung!”

10 Samuel berättade allt vad Herren sagt till dem som begärde en kung. 11 Han sa: ”En kung som ska härska över er kommer att ha rätt att ta ut era söner till krigstjänst, som ryttare eller vagnsförare eller till att springa framför hans vagnar. 12 Några kommer han att sätta till befäl över tusen eller femtio man. Andra kommer att tvingas plöja hans åkrar och ta in hans skördar eller sättas att tillverka hans vapen och vagnar. 13 Han kommer att ta era döttrar till att bereda salvor och parfymer och till att arbeta i hans kök och bageri. 14 Han kommer att ta era bästa åkrar, vingårdar och olivträd och ge dem till sina tjänstemän. 15 Han kommer att kräva en tiondel av er skörd åt sina hovmän och tjänstemän. 16 Han kommer att kräva att få era tjänare, de bästa åsnorna och det bästa av er boskap för sina personliga behov. 17 Han kommer att kräva en tiondel av era hjordar och ni kommer att bli hans slavar. 18 Ni kommer att ångra er och gråta bittert på grund av den kung som ni valt, men då ska Herren inte hjälpa er.”

19 Men folket vägrade lyssna till Samuels varningar och sa: ”Nej, vi måste ha en kung! 20 Vi vill vara som alla andra folk. Vi vill ha en kung som kan skipa rätt åt oss och leda oss och kämpa för oss i strid.”

21 Samuel berättade sedan för Herren vad folket hade sagt 22 och Herren svarade: ”Gör som de säger och ge dem en kung!” Då sa Samuel till dem att de skulle gå hem, var och en till sin stad.

Samuel möter Saul

9 Kish var en inflytelserik man från Benjamins stam. Han var son till Aviel och sonson till Seror som i sin tur var son till Bekorat och sonson till Afiach av Benjamins stam. 2 Denne Kish hade en son som hette Saul. Han var den ståtligaste mannen i Israel och huvudet högre än någon annan i landet.

3 En dag hade Kishs åsnor sprungit bort, så han sände ut Saul och en tjänare för att söka efter dem. 4 De gick genom Efraims bergsbygd, Shalishalandet, Shaalimsområdet och hela Benjamins land, men kunde inte hitta dem någonstans. 5 När de till slut kom fram till Sufs land, sa Saul till tjänaren: ”Nu går vi hem, för nu är nog min far mer orolig för oss än för åsnorna.” 6 Men tjänaren sa: ”Det finns en gudsman i den här staden. Hela folket ser upp till honom, för allt han säger slår in. Vi går dit. Kanske han kan tala om för oss vart vi ska ta vägen.”

7 ”Men vi har väl inget att ge honom?” svarade Saul sin tjänare. ”Till och med vår mat i packningen är slut. Vi har ingenting att ge honom. Eller har vi något?” 8 ”Jag har en kvarts sikel silver[a],” sa tjänaren. ”Jag kan ge honom det, så visar han vägen.”

9 När israeliterna förr i tiden gick för att rådfråga Gud, brukade man säga: ”Kom, så går vi till siaren!” På den tiden kallades profeterna för siare.

10 ”Det låter bra”, svarade Saul sin tjänare. ”Vi går dit.” Och så gick de mot staden där profeten bodde.

11 När de var på väg uppför sluttningen mot staden, fick de syn på några unga flickor som var på väg att hämta vatten och de frågade dem om siaren var där.

12 ”Ja”, svarade flickorna. ”Fortsätt bara rakt fram, så hittar ni honom. Han har just kommit till staden, för folket har en offerfest uppe på kullen. 13 När ni kommer till staden hittar ni honom innan han går upp på kullen för måltiden. Folket börjar inte äta förrän han har kommit och välsignat offret. Först därefter börjar de inbjudna äta. Gå alltså genast, så kan ni träffa honom nu!”

14 Saul och hans tjänare fortsatte då upp mot staden och just när de kom in genom portarna, mötte de Samuel som redan var på väg till offerplatsen.

15 Dagen innan Saul kom hade Herren uppenbarat sig och sagt till Samuel: 16 ”I morgon vid den här tiden ska jag sända en man från Benjamins land till dig. Honom ska du smörja till furste för mitt folk. Han ska rädda dem från filistéerna, för jag har sett mitt folks nöd och hört deras rop.”

17 När Samuel fick se Saul, sa Herren: ”Det var den här mannen jag berättade för dig om! Han ska härska över mitt folk.”

18 Under tiden gick Saul fram till Samuel i stadsporten och frågade: ”Kan du tala om för mig var siaren bor?”

19 ”Det är jag som är siaren”, svarade Samuel. ”Gå upp till offerplatsen så länge, jag kommer strax efter. I dag ska ni äta tillsammans med mig. I morgon kan ni sedan fortsätta vidare och då ska jag också tala om för dig allt vad du vill veta. 20 Åsnorna som sprang bort för tre dagar sedan behöver du inte oroa dig för, de har redan kommit till rätta. Och för övrigt: ska inte allt det härliga som finns i Israel tillfalla dig och din släkt?”

21 Saul sa: ”Jag är från Benjamins stam, den minsta av Israels stammar, och min släkt är den oansenligaste av alla i stammen! Varför talar du så till mig?”

22 Men Samuel förde Saul och hans tjänare in i den stora salen och gav dem de främsta platserna bland de inbjudna gästerna som var omkring trettio. 23 Sedan sa han till kocken att ta fram köttbiten, den som han gett honom och bett honom lägga undan. 24 Kocken tog då fram ett lårstycke[b] och det som hörde till det och placerade framför Saul.

”Ät!” sa Samuel. ”Det här köttstycket har varit bestämt åt dig ända sedan jag bjöd in till den här festen.” Saul åt då tillsammans med Samuel.

25 Och när de hade återvänt till staden efter festen, gick de upp på taket[c] för att prata. 26 I gryningen nästa morgon ropade Samuel till Saul på taket och sa: ”Stig upp! Jag ska följa dig ett stycke på vägen.” Saul steg upp och de gick ut tillsammans.

27 När de kom till utkanten av staden sa Samuel till Saul att skicka sin tjänare i förväg. Sedan sa han till Saul: ”Stanna här, för jag har ett budskap från Herren till dig.”

Samuel smörjer Saul till kung

10 Samuel tog fram en flaska med olja som han hällde över Sauls huvud. Sedan kysste han honom och sa:

”Herren smörjer dig till furste över sin arvedel.[d] 2 När du lämnar mig, kommer du att träffa två män vid Rakels grav i Selsach i Benjamins land. De kommer att tala om för dig att åsnorna har återfunnits, men att din far nu i stället är orolig för dig och frågar: ’Hur ska jag hitta min son?’

3 När du kommer till eken vid Tabor, kommer du att möta tre män som är på väg till Gud i Betel. En av dem bär på tre killingar, en annan har tre brödkakor och den tredje en skinnsäck med vin. 4 De kommer att hälsa dig och erbjuda dig två av offerkakorna och dem ska du ta emot.

5 Efter det ska du gå till Guds Giva där filistéerna har en utpost. När du går in i staden, kommer du att möta en grupp profeter på väg ner från offerplatsen. De spelar på psaltare, tamburin, flöjt och harpa och profeterar medan de går vägen fram. 6 I samma stund ska Herrens Ande komma över dig och du ska profetera tillsammans med dem. Du ska förvandlas och bli som en ny människa. 7 Efter att dessa tecken har inträffat kan du fatta beslut efter din övertygelse, för Herren ska leda dig. 8 Gå sedan före mig till Gilgal och vänta på mig där i sju dagar. Jag ska komma dit och offra brännoffer och gemenskapsoffer och då ska jag tala om för dig vad du ska göra.”

9 När Saul vände sig om och började gå ifrån Samuel, förvandlade Gud hans hjärta och gav honom ett nytt sätt att tänka och redan samma dag inträffade alla dessa tecken. 10 Då de kom till Giva, kom profeterna emot dem och Guds Ande kom över Saul, så att han också profeterade.

11 De som tidigare hade känt Saul började undra när de såg honom profetera tillsammans med de andra profeterna. ”Vad har hänt med Kishs son?” frågade de varandra. ”Är Saul också en av profeterna?” 12 En man som bodde där tillade: ”Vem är deras far?” På så sätt tillkom ordspråket: ”Är Saul också en av profeterna?”

13 När Saul hade slutat att profetera, gick han upp på kullen. 14 ”Var har du och tjänaren hållit hus så länge?” frågade Sauls farbror. ”Vi gick för att leta reda på åsnorna, men vi kunde inte hitta dem,” svarade Saul. ”Därför gick vi till Samuel.” 15 ”Jaså? Och vad sa han då?” undrade farbrodern. 16 ”Han sa att åsnorna hade kommit till rätta”, svarade Saul. Men han lät bli att berätta vad Samuel sagt om kungadömet.

Israel väljer Saul som kung

17 Samuel kallade samman hela Israels folk inför Herren i Mispa. 18 Han sa till dem: ”Så säger Herren, Israels Gud: ’Jag förde Israel ut ur Egypten och räddade er från egypterna och alla andra folk som förtryckte er.’ 19 Men nu har ni förkastat denne er Gud som räddat er ur alla era olyckor och svårigheter och ni säger: ’Vi vill ha en kung i stället!’ Så kom nu fram inför Herren, varje stam för sig och varje släkt för sig!”

20 Sedan kallade Samuel fram de olika stammarna inför Herren och när man kastade lott,[e] föll lotten på Benjamins stam. 21 Därefter förde han fram de olika släkterna i Benjamins stam inför Herren och den här gången föll lotten på Matris släkt. Slutligen föll lotten på Saul, Kishs son, men när de försökte få tag på honom var han försvunnen.

22 Folket frågade då Herren: ”Var är han? Har han verkligen kommit?” Herren svarade: ”Han gömmer sig borta i lägret.” 23 De sprang då dit och hämtade honom och när de förde fram honom inför folket var han huvudet högre än alla andra.

24 Då sa Samuel: ”Detta är den man som Herren har utvalt. Hans like finns inte i hela Israel!” Och hela folket jublade och ropade: ”Leve kungen!”

25 Samuel förklarade än en gång för folket vad en kung hade för rättigheter. Han skrev också ner dem i en bok som sedan förvarades inför Herren. Efter det sände han hem folket, var och en till sitt.

26 När Saul återvände till sitt hem i Giva, följdes han av en skara krigare som hade känt Guds kallelse. 27 Men det fanns några bland folket som var ondsinta och sa: ”Hur ska han kunna rädda oss?” De föraktade Saul och vägrade att ge honom gåvor, men han teg.[f]

Saul besegrar ammoniterna

11 Ammoniternas kung Nachash anföll nu[g] och belägrade Javesh i Gilead. Invånarna i Javesh sa till honom: ”Slut förbund med oss, så ska vi bli era tjänare!” 2 Nachash svarade: ”Jag kan sluta förbund med er, men bara på det villkoret att jag får sticka ut höger öga på varenda en av er, så att hela Israel blir förödmjukat.”

3 ”Låt oss få sju dagar på oss, så att vi kan skicka bud till hela Israel”, svarade de äldste i Javesh. ”Men om ingen kommer och räddar oss, då ska vi gå med på dina villkor.”

4 När budbärarna från Javesh kom till Sauls Giva och berättade vad som hade hänt, började alla gråta högt. 5 Saul återvände från åkrarna med sina oxar och frågade: ”Vad är det som har hänt? Varför gråter alla?” Då berättade de för honom vad männen från Javesh hade sagt 6 och genast kom Guds Ande över Saul och han brann av vrede. 7 Han tog två oxar, styckade dem och sände ut styckena med budbärare över hela Israel. ”Om någon vägrar att följa Saul och Samuel i strid, ska det gå med hans oxar på detta vis”, lät han hälsa. Fruktan för Herren föll då över folket och de ställde upp till sista man. 8 Han räknade dem sedan i Besek och fann att det var 300 000 man från Israel och 30 000 man från Juda.

9 Efter det skickade han budbärare tillbaka till Javesh i Gilead med beskedet: ”Ni kommer att räddas när solen skiner som varmast i morgon.” Glädjen i staden visste inga gränser när budbärarna återvände och berättade detta.

10 Männen i Javesh meddelade sedan ammoniterna: ”Vi ger oss! I morgon kan ni komma och göra vad ni vill med oss.”

11 Dagen därpå delade Saul upp sin armé i tre grupper och redan före gryningen överrumplade de ammoniterna i deras läger. När dagen var som hetast var ammoniterna slagna. Resten av ammoniternas armé blev så grundligt skingrad att inte ens två personer kom undan tillsammans.

12 Då sa folket till Samuel: ”Var är de män som sa att Saul inte skulle bli vår kung? För hit dem, så att vi får döda dem!” 13 Men Saul svarade: ”Nej, en dag som denna ska ingen avrättas, för i dag har Herren räddat Israel!”

14 Då sa Samuel till folket: ”Kom, låt oss gå till Gilgal och än en gång bekräfta att Saul är vår kung.”

15 Och de gick till Gilgal och inför Herren utropade de Saul till kung. Sedan offrade de gemenskapsoffer till Herren och Saul och hela Israel firade en stor glädjefest.

Samuels avskedstal

12 Sedan talade Samuel till folket på nytt:

”Lyssna!” sa han. ”Jag har gjort vad ni bett mig om. Jag har gett er en kung. 2 Nu är kungen er ledare. Jag är nu en gammal gråhårig man och mina söner finns här bland er. Jag har varit er ledare sedan min ungdom. 3 Här står jag nu, vittna mot mig inför Herren och hans smorde. Har jag tagit någons oxe eller åsna? Har jag kränkt eller förtryckt någon? Har jag någonsin tagit emot mutor eller panter av någon? Tala om det för mig, så ska jag ersätta dem som jag har skadat.”

4 ”Nej”, svarade de. ”Du har aldrig kränkt eller förtryckt oss och du har aldrig tagit mutor.”

5 ”Herren och hans smorde är i dag mina vittnen på att ni inte har något att anklaga mig för”, sa Samuel.

”Ja, han är vittne”, svarade de.

6 ”Det var Herren som gav er Mose och Aron”, fortsatte Samuel. ”Han förde era förfäder ut ur Egyptens land. 7 Bli nu stilla inför Herren medan jag går till rätta med er och påminner er om Herrens rättfärdiga gärningar mot er och era förfäder.

8 När Jakob kommit till Egypten och folket ropade till Herren, sände han dem Mose och Aron som ledde dem ut ur Egypten och lät dem bosätta sig här i landet.

9 Men folket glömde snart Herren, sin Gud, och därför överlämnade han dem åt Sisera, generalen i Hasors här, och åt filistéerna och åt Moabs kung som alla förde krig mot Israel. 10 Folket ropade då till Herren igen: ’Vi har syndat genom att vända Herren ryggen. Vi har tillbett baalsgudar och astartegudinnor. Men nu ska vi tjäna dig och enbart dig, om du bara befriar oss från våra fiender!’ 11 Herren sände då Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jefta och Samuel för att rädda er från fienderna runt omkring och så fick ni leva i trygghet.[h]

12 Men när ni såg att Nachash, Ammons kung, kom mot er, sa ni till mig att ni behövde en kung som kunde regera över er. Detta trots att ni redan hade en kung, Herren. 13 Men här är nu den kung ni själva valt och bett om. Herren har satt honom över er.

14 Om ni fruktar Herren, tjänar och lyder honom och inte gör uppror mot honom, ja, om både ni och er kung följer Herren, er Gud, så kommer allt att gå väl. 15 Men om ni gör uppror mot Herrens bud och inte lyder honom, så kommer Herren att behandla er på samma sätt som han behandlade era förfäder.

16 Stå nu still här, så ska ni få se Herren göra ett stort under. 17 Nu är det ju tid för veteskörden[i]. Men jag ska be till Herren att han sänder åska och regn. Då kommer ni att inse hur ont och orätt ni handlade inför Herren då ni begärde en kung.”

18 Samuel ropade sedan till Herren som sände åska och regn redan samma dag och hela folket darrade av fruktan inför Herren och Samuel.

19 ”Be till Herren, din Gud, för oss dina tjänare, så att vi inte dör”, sa de till Samuel. ”Nu har vi lagt ännu en synd till alla de andra genom att begära en kung.”

20 ”Var inte rädda”, sa Samuel till folket. ”Det är sant att ni har begått en svår synd, men se till att ni i fortsättningen tillber Herren helhjärtat och inte vänder honom ryggen. 21 Vänd er inte till andra gudar som varken kan hjälpa eller rädda er, eftersom de inte är annat än tomhet. 22 Herren ska för sitt mäktiga namns skull inte överge sitt eget folk. Han har ju själv utvalt er till sitt folk.

23 För min egen del vill jag inte synda mot Herren genom att sluta att be för er. Jag ska i stället fortsätta att undervisa er om det goda och rätta. 24 Frukta Herren och tjäna honom troget och helhjärtat! Tänk på allt det stora han har gjort för er! 25 Men om ni fortsätter att synda, kommer både ni och er kung att förgås.”

Saul är olydig mot Gud

Fortsatt krig mot filistéerna

13 Under sitt andra regeringsår[j], efter att ha blivit kung i Israel, 2 valde Saul ut 3 000 män ur Israels folk. Av dessa fick 2 000 följa med honom till Mikmas och Betels bergsbygd, medan 1 000 man var hos Jonatan i Giva i Benjamins land. Resten av folket hade han skickat hem.

3 Jonatan anföll filistéernas utpost i Geva och filistéerna fick höra det. Saul lät blåsa i horn över hela landet för att hebréerna skulle höra det. 4 Så fick hela Israel höra att Saul anfallit den filistéiska utposten och att Israel på detta sätt dragit över sig filistéernas hat. Folket kallades samman för att följa Saul till Gilgal. 5 Filistéerna samlade en mäktig armé på 3 000 vagnar, 6 000 ryttare och ett oräkneligt antal fotsoldater, liksom sanden på havets strand. De gick och slog sedan läger vid Mikmas öster om Bet Aven. 6 När Israels män fick se att de var i nöd och att deras armé var hårt pressad, gömde de sig i grottor, skogssnår och gropar, bland klipporna och i gravar och vattenbehållare. 7 Somliga av hebréerna gick över Jordanfloden och flydde till Gads och Gileads land.

Under tiden stannade Saul i Gilgal och de som var med honom darrade av skräck. 8 I sju dagar väntade sedan Saul där, precis som Samuel tidigare sagt till honom[k]. Men när Samuel fortfarande inte hade kommit och männen började lämna honom, 9 sa Saul: ”För fram brännoffret och gemenskapsoffret till mig!” Sedan offrade han brännoffret. 10 Just då han hade avslutat offrandet, kom Samuel och Saul gick ut för att möta honom och hälsa på honom. 11 Men Samuel sa: ”Vad är det du har gjort?” Saul svarade: ”När jag såg att mina män övergav mig och att du inte hade anlänt vid den tidpunkt du lovade och att filistéerna stod vid Mikmas klara till strid, 12 sa jag: ’Filistéerna är beredda att marschera mot oss och jag har inte vädjat till Herren om hjälp!’ Därför kände jag mig tvingad att bära fram brännoffret innan du kom.”

13 ”Du har handlat som en dåre!” sa Samuel. ”Du har inte hållit Herrens, din Guds, bud som han gav dig. Han skulle annars ha befäst din kungamakt över Israel för all framtid, 14 men nu tas den ifrån dig. Herren har sökt sig en man efter sitt sinne och han har redan valt ut honom till furste över sitt folk, eftersom du inte har rättat dig efter Herrens bud.”

Israels militära underläge

15 Samuel lämnade sedan Gilgal och gick till Giva i Benjamins land. Men när Saul räknade soldaterna som fortfarande var med honom, upptäckte han att det bara var 600 man kvar. 16 Saul och hans son Jonatan och deras män slog upp sitt läger i Geva i Benjamins land, medan filistéerna stannade vid Mikmas. 17 Därifrån sände filistéerna ut tre grupper av plundrare. En grupp gick mot Ofra i Shuals land, 18 en gick till Bet Horon och en gick närmare ökengränsen ovanför Sevoimdalen.

19 På den här tiden fanns det inga smeder i Israels land, eftersom filistéerna ville hindra hebréerna från att smida svärd och spjut. 20 Varje gång de behövde vässa sina plogbillar, skäror, yxor eller liar[l] måste de alltså gå till filistéerna. 21 Det kostade två tredjedels sikel[m] att slipa en plogbill eller en skära och hälften så mycket för en yxa, högrep eller oxpik. 22 Därför fanns det inte ett enda svärd eller spjut i hela Israels armé när de skulle kriga mot filistéerna. Det var bara Saul och Jonatan som hade vapen.

Jonatans djärva plan

23 Ett förband ur filistéernas armé hade nu gått fram till bergspasset vid Mikmas.

14 Någon dag senare sa Jonatan, Sauls son till sin väpnare: ”Kom så går vi över till filistéernas förläggning på andra sidan passet!” Men han berättade inte för sin far om sina planer. 2 Saul hade slagit läger runt granatäppelträdet i Migron vid gränsen till Giva med sina 600 män. 3 Bland dem fanns Achia som bar efoden. Han var barnbarnsbarn till Eli, Herrens präst i Shilo. Hans far var Achituv, I-Kavods bror, och hans farfar hette Pinechas.

Ingen lade märke till att Jonatan hade gett sig av. 4 Men för att komma till filistéernas läger måste Jonatan gå genom ett trångt pass mellan två höga klippor som kallades Boses och Sene. 5 Den ena klippan reste sig i norr mot Mikmas och den södra mot Geva. 6 ”Nu går vi över till dessa oomskurna hedningar”, hade Jonatan sagt till sin väpnare. ”Kanske kommer Herren att göra något för oss. Det spelar ju ingen roll för honom om vi är många eller få, för han kan ge seger!”

7 ”Gör det du tycker är bäst”, svarade hans väpnare. ”Jag stödjer dig helhjärtat, vad du än beslutar.”

8 ”Bra, låt oss då gå över till männen och göra så att de ser oss”, sa Jonatan. 9 ”Om de säger till oss: ’Stanna där ni är tills vi kommer till er’, så stannar vi och går inte upp till dem. 10 Men om de säger: ’Kom hit upp!’, så gör vi det. Det ska vara tecknet på att Herren överlämnar dem åt oss.”

11 När filistéerna såg dem, ropade de: ”Titta! Hebréerna kravlar sig upp ur sina hål!” 12 Sedan ropade de ner från sin utpost till Jonatan och hans väpnare: ”Kom hit upp, så ska vi visa er!”

”Kom nu, följ mig”, sa Jonatan till sin väpnare, ”för Herren har överlämnat dem åt israeliterna!” 13 Och med hjälp av både händer och fötter tog Jonatan sig uppför klippan med väpnaren strax efter sig. Filistéerna föll för Jonatan och hans väpnare kom efter och gav dem dödsstöten.

14 Så dödade de cirka tjugo man på ett område ungefär lika stort som ett halvt plogland[n]. 15 Plötsligt utbröt panik i hela filistéernas armé, till och med bland dem som var ute och plundrade i omgivningarna, och samtidigt blev det jordbävning. Denna skräck sände Gud över dem.

16 Sauls vaktposter i Giva fick nu se hur hela filistéernas armé upplöstes och soldaterna flydde åt alla håll. 17 ”Ta reda på vem som saknas bland oss”, befallde Saul. Och när männen mönstrades fann man att Jonatan och hans väpnare var borta.

18 ”Hämta Guds ark[o]”, ropade Saul till Achia. Den fanns bland Israels folk på den tiden. 19 Men medan Saul talade med prästen, tilltog ropen och tumultet i filistéernas läger allt mer. ”Nej, låt det vara!” sa Saul till prästen. 20 Sedan samlade Saul sina män och gick till stridsplatsen och fann att filistéerna höll på att döda varandra. Det rådde fullständig förvirring bland dem.

21 De hebréer som tidigare lytt under filistéerna och som dragit ut tillsammans med den filistéiska armén, bytte nu sida: de gick över till israeliterna som var med Saul och Jonatan. 22 Slutligen anslöt sig även de som hade gömt sig i bergen, när de nu hörde att filistéerna flydde och deltog i striden och förföljde dem. 23 Så räddade Herren Israel den dagen och striden fortsatte bortom Bet Aven.

Saul ger en obetänksam order

24 Israeliterna hade stridit mycket och var trötta. Saul hade bundit dem med en ed: ”En förbannelse vilar över den som äter något före kvällen innan jag har tagit full hämnd på mina fiender!” Därför åt ingen något under hela dagen, 25 fastän det låg honung på marken i skogen dit folket kom. 26 När de kom in i skogen och såg den utflutna honungen, vågade de inte ta för sig och föra något till munnen. Alla fruktade för eden.

27 Men Jonatan hade inte hört sin fars ed som han bundit folket med. Han doppade en käpp i honungen och när han hade ätit av den, fick hans ögon ny glans. 28 Då berättade någon för honom om hans fars ed, att den var förbannad som åt något den dagen och att resultatet hade blivit att alla var utmattade. 29 ”Min far drar olycka över landet!” sa Jonatan. ”Ser ni inte vilken glans mina ögon fick när jag åt lite honung? 30 Tänk om folket hade fått äta av bytet de tagit från fienden! Hur mycket större skulle inte filistéernas nederlag ha blivit!”

31 Den dagen fördrev israeliterna filistéerna från Mikmas ända till Ajalon, men de var helt utmattade. 32 De kastade sig över krigsbytet och slaktade får, oxar och kalvar direkt på marken och åt köttet med blodet i. 33 Man rapporterade till Saul att folket syndade mot Herren genom att äta kött som hade blodet i sig.[p]

”Ni har gjort något mycket ont”, sa Saul. ”Rulla fram en stor sten hit till mig 34 och gå ut bland trupperna och se till att de för hit oxar och får, så att de kan slakta dem och låta blodet rinna av dem. Synda inte mot Herren genom att äta kött med blodet i!” När det blev natt kom alla dit med sina oxar och slaktade dem där. 35 Och Saul byggde sitt första altare åt Herren.

36 Därefter sa Saul: ”Nu förföljer vi filistéerna och plundrar dem hela natten ända tills det ljusnar. Vi låter ingen av dem slippa undan.” ”Det är bra”, sa hans män, ”gör det du tycker är bäst!” Men prästen sa: ”Det är säkrast att vi frågar Gud först.”

37 Saul frågade då Gud: ”Ska jag förfölja filistéerna? Överlämnar du dem åt Israel?” Men den dagen gav Herren inget svar.

38 Då sammankallade Saul folkets ledare och sa: ”Ta reda på vilken synd som har begåtts i dag. 39 Så sant Herren lever, han som räddat Israel, att även om syndaren är min egen son Jonatan, så ska han dö!” Men ingen gav honom något svar. 40 Sedan sa Saul till israeliterna: ”Ni ska stå på ena sidan och Jonatan och jag står här.” Och folket svarade: ”Gör vad du finner vara bäst.”

41 Saul sa till Herren, Israels Gud: ”Varför har du inte svarat din tjänare i dag? Om skulden ligger hos mig eller min son Jonatan, Herre, Israels Gud, låt då urim komma upp, och om den ligger hos ditt folk Israel, låt då tummim[q] komma upp.”[r] Då utpekades Jonatan och Saul skyldiga, medan folket förklarades oskyldigt. 42 Sedan sa Saul: ”Dra nu lott mellan mig och Jonatan!” Och då föll lotten på Jonatan.

43 ”Tala genast om för mig vad du har gjort!” sa Saul till Jonatan. ”Jag smakade lite honung från änden av min stav”, erkände Jonatan. ”Men nu måste jag alltså dö!” 44 ”Ja, Jonatan”, sa Saul. ”Du måste dö! Må Gud slå mig med döden om det inte blir så!” 45 Men folket protesterade: ”Ska Jonatan dö, han som i dag så storslaget har räddat Israel? Nej, det kommer aldrig på fråga! Så sant Herren lever: inte ett hårstrå på hans huvud ska krökas, för Gud har hjälpt honom att utföra detta i dag!” Och på det sättet räddade Sauls män Jonatans liv, så att han inte behövde dö.

46 Efter detta slutade Saul att förfölja filistéerna och de återvände till sitt land.

Saul lyckas militärt

47 Sedan Saul blivit Israels kung, stred han mot sina fiender i alla riktningar: mot Moab, Ammon och Edom, mot kungarna i Sova och mot filistéerna och på alla fronter lyckades han bestraffa sina fiender. 48 Han utförde stora bragder, besegrade amalekiterna och räddade Israel från dem som tidigare anfallit och plundrat dem.

49 Saul hade tre söner, Jonatan, Jishjo[s] och Malki-Shua. Dessutom hade han två döttrar, den äldsta hette Merav och den yngsta Mikal. 50 Sauls hustru hette Achinoam och var dotter till Achimaas. Överbefälhavaren för Sauls här hette Avner och var hans kusin, hans farbror Ners son. 51 Sauls far Kish och Avners far Ner var bröder och båda var söner till Aviel.

52 Israeliterna kämpade häftiga strider mot filistéerna under Sauls livstid och varje gång Saul fick syn på en modig och stridsduglig man, tog han honom i sin tjänst.

Saul tar krigsbyte mot Herrens vilja

15 Samuel sa till Saul: ”Det var mig som Herren sände att smörja dig till kung över Israel, så lyssna nu vad Herren säger! 2 Så säger härskarornas Herre: ’Jag ska straffa Amalek för det de gjorde mot Israel då de anföll dem på vägen från Egypten.[t] 3 Gå nu och vig hela Amaleks folk och allt de har åt förintelse. Utrota män, kvinnor, barn, ungdomar, oxar, får, kameler och åsnor!’ ” 4 Saul mobiliserade sin armé och mönstrade dem i Telaim. Han hade 200 000 soldater och dessutom 10 000 man från Juda.

5 När Saul kom till Amaleks stad, lade han sig i bakhåll i dalen. 6 Sedan skickade han bud till keniterna att dra sig bort och överge amalekiterna. ”Jag vill inte utrota er tillsammans med dem. Ni var ju vänliga mot Israels folk, när de kom från Egypten”, sa han. Keniterna drog sig då bort därifrån. 7 Sedan slog Saul amalekiterna ända från Havila och ner till Shur, öster om Egypten. 8 Han tillfångatog Agag, amalekiternas kung, men vigde alla andra åt förintelse och högg ner dem med svärd. 9 Saul och hans män skonade alltså Agag, men också det bästa av fåren och oxarna och de fetaste lammen, kort sagt allt som var värdefullt. De ville inte viga det åt förintelse, utan gjorde det bara med det som var svagt och värdelöst.

Herren förkastar Saul

10 Då kom Herrens ord till Samuel: 11 ”Jag ångrar att jag gjorde Saul till kung, för han har än en gång vänt sig bort från mig och vägrat att lyda mig.” Samuel blev djupt skakad och han ropade och bad till Herren hela natten. 12 Tidigt nästa morgon gick han ut för att leta efter Saul, men fick höra att han hade gått till berget Karmel för att resa ett monument över sig själv och att han därefter hade fortsatt till Gilgal.

13 När Samuel kom, hälsade Saul och sa: ”Herren välsigne dig! Nu har jag verkställt Herrens befallning!”

14 ”Vad är det då för ett bräkande av får och bölande av oxar jag hör?” frågade Samuel. 15 ”Mina soldater räddade det bästa av amalekiternas får och oxar”, erkände Saul, ”men det var för att offra dem till Herren, din Gud. Allt annat har vi vigt åt förintelse.”

16 Då sa Samuel till Saul: ”Sluta! Hör nu vad Herren sa till mig i natt!” ”Vad sa han?” undrade Saul.

17 Samuel svarade: ”När du själv inte tyckte att du var något, blev du ledare för Israels stammar och Herren smorde dig till kung över Israel. 18 Och han gav dig ett uppdrag och sa till dig: ’Gå och vig de syndiga amalekiterna åt förintelse. Strid mot dem tills du utplånat dem alla!’ 19 Varför lydde du inte Herren? Varför kastade du dig över krigsbytet och gjorde det som är ont i Herrens ögon?”

20 ”Men jag har lytt Herren”, svarade Saul. ”Jag gick dit han sa till mig att gå. Jag tog med mig kung Agag, men jag vigde alla de andra åt förintelse. 21 Och mina trupper behöll fåren och oxarna, det allra bästa av det som skulle vigas åt förintelse, för att offra det till Herren.”

22 Samuel svarade:

”Gläder sig Herren lika mycket åt brännoffer och slaktoffer
    som att man hör Herrens röst?
Nej, lydnad är bättre än offer,
    och att lyssna till honom är bättre
    än att offra baggars fett åt honom.
23 Upproriskhet är en lika stor synd som spådom,
    och övermod lika avigt som att tillbe avgudar.
Du har förkastat Herrens ord,
    och han har förkastat dig som kung.”

Saul ber om nåd

24 ”Jag har syndat”, sa Saul till Samuel. ”Jag var olydig mot Herrens befallning och handlade inte efter dina ord, för jag var rädd för folket och gjorde vad de krävde. 25 Förlåt nu min synd och följ med mig tillbaka, så att jag kan tillbe Herren!” 26 Men Samuel svarade: ”Jag kommer inte tillbaka med dig. Eftersom du har förkastat Herrens befallning, har han också förkastat dig som kung över Israel.” 27 När Samuel sedan vände sig om för att gå, grep Saul tag i hans mantel, men då revs manteln sönder. 28 ”Se”, sa Samuel, ”Herren har ryckt Israels rike ifrån dig i dag och gett det till en av dina landsmän, till en som är bättre än du. 29 Han som är Israels härlighet ljuger inte och inte heller ångrar han sig, för han är inte en människa.”

30 Då sa Saul: ”Jag har syndat, men hedra mig åtminstone inför mitt folks äldste och Israel genom att gå med mig och tillbe Herren, din Gud!” 31 Samuel gick då med honom och Saul tillbad Herren.

32 Sedan sa Samuel: ”För hit amalekiternas kung Agag!” Agag kom darrande[u] fram men tänkte ändå: ”Dödens bitterhet är borta.” 33 Men Samuel sa:

”På samma sätt som ditt svärd har gjort många mödrar barnlösa,
    ska din mor nu bli barnlös.”

Och Samuel dödade honom inför Herren i Gilgal.

34 Sedan gick Samuel hem till Rama och Saul återvände till Sauls Giva. 35 Efter den dagen träffade Samuel aldrig Saul mer, men han tänkte ofta med sorg på honom och Herren sörjde över att han hade gjort Saul till kung över Israel.

8 Men när Samuel blev gammal, satte han sina söner till domare över Israel

2 Hans förstfödde son hette Joel, och hans andre son Abia; de hade sitt domarsäte i Beer-Seba.

3 Men hans söner vandrade icke på hans väg, utan veko av därifrån och sökte orätt vinning; de togo mutor och vrängde rätten.

4 Då församlade sig alla de äldste i Israel och kommo till Samuel i Rama.

5 Och de sade till honom: »Du är ju nu gammal, och dina söner vandra icke på dina vägar. Så sätt nu en konung över oss till att döma oss, såsom alla andra folk hava.»

6 Men det misshagade Samuel, detta att de sade då: »Giv oss en konung, for att han må döma oss.» Och Samuel bad till HERREN.

7 Då sade HERREN till Samuel »Lyssna till folkets ord, och gör allt vad de begära av dig; ty det är icke dig de hava förkastat, nej, mig hava de förkastat, i det de icke vilja att jag skall vara konung över dem.

8 Såsom de alltid hava gjort, från den dag då jag förde dem upp ur Egypten ända till denna dag, i det att de hava övergivit mig och tjänat andra gudar, så göra de nu ock mot dig.

9 Så lyssna nu till deras ord. Dock må du högtidligt varna dem och förkunna för dem den konungs rätt, som kommer att regera över dem.»

10 Och Samuel sade till folket, som hade begärt en konung av honom, allt vad HERREN hade talat.

11 Han sade: »Detta bliver den konungs rätt, som kommer att regera över eder: Edra söner skall han taga och skall sätta dem på sina vagnar och hästar, till sin tjänst, eller ock skola de nödgas löpa framför hans vagnar.

12 Andra av dem skall han taga och sätta till sina över- och underhövitsmän, och andra skola nödgas plöja hans åkerjord och inbärga hans skörd och förfärdiga hans krigsredskap och hans vagnsredskap.

13 Edra döttrar skall han taga till salvoberederskor, kokerskor och bagerskor.

14 Edra bästa åkrar, vingårdar och olivplanteringar skall han taga och skall giva dem åt sina tjänare;

15 och han skall taga tionde av edra sädesfält och edra vingårdar och giva åt sina hovmän och tjänare.

16 Därtill skall han taga edra tjänare och edra tjänarinnor och edra bästa ynglingar, så ock edra åsnor, och bruka dem för sitt behov.

17 Av eder småboskap skall han taga tionde, och I skolen vara hans trälar.

18 När I då ropen om hjälp för dem konungs skull som I själva haven utvalt åt eder, då skall HERREN icke svara eder.

19 Men folket ville icke lyssna till Samuels ord, utan sade: »Nej, en konung måste vi hava över oss.»

20 Vi vilja bliva lika alla andra folk; vi vilja hava en konung som dömer oss, och som drager ut i spetsen för oss till att föra våra krig.»

21 Då nu Samuel hörde allt detta som folket sade, framförde han det till HERREN.

22 Men HERREN sade till Samuel: »Lyssna till deras ord, och sätt en konung över dem.» Då sade Samuel till Israels män: »Gån hem, var och en till sin stad.»

9 I Benjamin levde en man som hette Kis, son till Abiel, son till Seror, son till Bekorat, son till Afia, son till en benjaminit; och han var en rik man.

2 Han hade en son som hette Saul, en ståtlig och fager man; bland Israels barn fanns ingen man som var fagrare än han; han var huvudet högre än allt folket.

3 Nu hade Kis', Sauls faders, åsninnor kommit bort för honom; därför sade Kis till sin son Saul: »Tag med dig en av tjänarna och stå upp och gå åstad och sök efter åsninnorna.»

4 Då gick han genom Efraims bergsbygd och därefter genom Salisalandet; men de funno dem icke. Så gingo de genom Saalimslandet, men där voro de icke; sedan gick han genom Benjamins land, men de funno dem icke heller där.

5 När de så hade kommit in i Sufs land, sade Saul till tjänaren som han hade med sig: »Kom, låt oss gå hem igen; min fader kunde eljest, stället för att tänka på åsninnorna, bliva orolig för vår skull.»

6 Men han svarade honom: »Se, i denna stad finnes en gudsman; han är en ansedd man; allt vad han säger, det sker. Låt oss nu gå dit; måhända kan han säga oss något om den färd vi hava företagit oss.»

7 Då sade Saul till sin tjänare: »Men om vi gå dit, vad skola vi då taga med oss åt mannen? Brödet är ju slut i våra ränslar, och vi hava icke heller någon annan gåva att taga med oss åt gudsmannen. Eller vad hava vi väl?»

8 Tjänaren svarade Saul ännu en gång och sade: »Se, här har jag i min ägo en fjärdedels sikel silver; den vill jag giva åt gudsmannen, för att han må säga oss vilken väg vi böra gå.»

9 (Fordom sade man så i Israel, när man gick för att fråga Gud: »Kom, låt oss gå till siaren.» Ty den som man nu kallar profet kallade man fordom siare.)

10 Saul sade till sin tjänare: »Ditt förslag är gott; kom, låt oss gå.» Så gingo de till staden där gudsmannen fanns.

11 När de nu gingo uppför höjden där staden låg, träffade de några flickor som hade gått ut för att hämta vatten; dem frågade de: »Är siaren här?»

12 De svarade dem och sade: »Ja, helt nära. Skynda dig nu, ty han har i dag kommit till staden; folket firar nämligen i dag en offerfest på offerhöjden.

13 Om I nu gån in i staden, träffen I honom, innan han går upp på höjden till måltiden, ty folket äter icke, förrän han kommer. Han skall välsigna offret; först sedan begynna de inbjudna att äta. Gån därför nu ditupp, ty just nu kunnen I träffa honom.»

14 Så gingo de upp till staden. Och just när de kommo in i staden, mötte de Samuel, som var stadd på väg upp till offerhöjden.

15 Men dagen innan Saul kom hade HERREN uppenbarat för Samuel och sagt:

16 »I morgon vid denna tid skall jag sända till dig en man från Benjamins land, och honom skall du smörja till furste över mitt folk Israel; han skall frälsa mitt folk ifrån filistéernas hand. Ty jag har sett till mitt folk, eftersom deras rop har kommit till mig.»

17 När nu Samuel fick se Saul, gav HERREN honom den uppenbarelsen: »Se där är den man om vilken jag sade till dig: Denne skall styra mitt folk.»

18 Men Saul gick fram till Samuel i porten och sade: »Säg mig var siaren bor.»

19 Samuel svarade Saul och sade: »Jag är siaren. Gå före mig upp på offerhöjden, ty I skolen äta där med mig i dag. Men i morgon vill jag låta dig gå; och om allt vad du har på hjärtat vill jag giva dig besked.

20 Och vad angår åsninnorna, som nu i tre dagar hava varit borta för dig, skall du icke bekymra dig för dem, ty de äro återfunna. Vem tillhör för övrigt allt vad härligt är i Israel, om icke dig och hela din faders hus?»

21 Saul svarade och sade: »Jag är ju en benjaminit, från en av de minsta stammarna i Israel, och min släkt är ju den ringaste bland alla släkter i Benjamins stammar. Varför talar du då till mig på det sättet?»

22 Men Samuel tog Saul och hans tjänare och förde dem upp i salen och gav dem plats överst bland de inbjudna, vilka voro vid pass trettio män.

23 Och Samuel sade till kocken: »Giv hit det stycke som jag gav dig, och som jag sade att du skulle förvara hos dig.»

24 Då tog kocken fram lårstycket med vad därtill hörde, och satte det fram för Saul; och Samuel sade: »Se, här sättes nu fram för dig det som har blivit sparat; ät därav. Ty just för denna stund blev det undanlagt åt dig, då när jag sade att jag hade inbjudit folket.» Så åt Saul den dagen med Samuel.

25 Därefter gingo de ned från offerhöjden och in i staden. Sedan samtalade han med Saul uppe på taket.

26 Men bittida följande dag, när morgonrodnaden gick upp, ropade Samuel uppåt taket till Saul och sade: »Stå upp, så vill jag ledsaga dig till vägs.» Då stod Saul upp, och de gingo båda åstad, han och Samuel.

27 När de så voro på väg ned mot ändan av staden, sade Samuel till Saul: »Säg till tjänaren att han skall gå före oss» -- och han fick gå -- »men du själv må nu stanna här, så vill jag låta dig höra vad Gud har talat.»

10 Och Samuel tog sin oljeflaska och göt olja på hans huvud och kysste honom och sade: »Se, HERREN har smort dig till furste över sin arvedel.

2 När du nu går ifrån mig, skall du invid Rakels grav, vid Benjamins gräns, vid Selsa, träffa två män; dessa skola säga till dig: 'Åsninnorna som du gick åstad att söka äro återfunna; din fader tänker därför icke mer på åsninnorna, men han är orolig för eder skull och säger: Vad skall jag göra för att finna min son?'

3 Och när du har gått därifrån ett stycke fram och kommit till Tabors terebint skall du där möta tre män som äro på väg upp till Gud i Betel. En bär tre killingar, en bar tre brödkakor, och en bär en vinlägel.

4 Dessa skola hälsa dig och giv dig två bröd, och du skall taga emot vad de giva.

5 Sedan kommer du till Guds Gibea, där filistéernas fogdar äro. Och när du kommer dit in i staden, skall du träffa på en skara profeter, som komma ned från offerhöjden där, med psaltare, puka, flöjt och harpa före sig, under det att de själva äro i profetisk hänryckning.

6 Och HERRENS Ande skall komma över dig, så att också du fattas av hänryckning likasom de; och du skall då bliva förvandlad till en annan människa.

7 När du nu ser att dessa tecken inträffa, då må du göra vad tillfället giver vid handen, ty Gud är med dig.

8 Sedan må du gå ned före mig till Gilgal, så skall jag komma ditned till dig, för att offra brännoffer och tackoffer; sju dagar skall du vänta till dess jag kommer till dig och förkunnar för dig vad du skall göra.

9 I det han nu vände sig om för att gå ifrån Samuel, förvandlade Gud hans sinne och gav honom ett annat hjärta; och alla dessa tecken inträffade samma dag.

10 När de kommo till Gibea, mötte honom där en skara profeter; då kom Guds Ande över honom, så att han, mitt ibland dem, själv fattades av profetisk hänryckning.

11 Då nu alla som förut kände honom fingo se honom vara i hänryckning likasom profeterna, sade folket sinsemellan: »Vad har skett med Kis' son? Är ock Saul bland profeterna?»

12 Men en av männen därifrån svarade och sade: »Vem är då dessas fader?» -- Härav uppkom ordspråket: »Är ock Saul bland profeterna?»

13 Men när hans profetiska hänryckning hade upphört, gick han upp på offerhöjden.

14 Då frågade Sauls farbroder honom och hans tjänare: »Var haven I varit?» Han svarade: »Borta för att söka åsninnorna. Men när vi sågo att de ingenstädes voro att finna, gingo vi till Samuel.»

15 Då sade Sauls farbroder: »Tala om for mig vad Samuel sade till eder.»

16 Saul svarade sin farbroder: »Han omtalade för oss att åsninnorna voro återfunna.» Men vad Samuel hade sagt om konungadömet omtalade han icke för honom.

17 Därefter kallade Samuel folket tillsammans till HERREN, i Mispa.

18 Och han sade till Israels barn: »Så säger HERREN, Israels Gud: Jag har fört Israel upp ur Egypten, och jag räddade eder icke allenast undan Egypten, utan ock undan alla andra konungadömen som förtryckte eder.

19 Men nu haven I förkastat eder Gud, som själv frälste eder ur alla edra olyckor och trångmål, och haven sagt till honom: 'Sätt en konung över oss.' Så träden nu fram inför HERREN efter edra stammar och edra ätter.»

20 Därpå lät Samuel alla Israels stammar gå fram; då träffades Benjamin stam av lotten.

21 När han sedan lät Benjamins stam gå fram efter dess släkter, träffade Matris släkt av lotten; därpå träffades Saul, Kis' son, av lotten, men när de då sökte efter honom, stod han icke att finna.

22 Då frågade de HERREN ännu en gång: »Har någon mer kommit hit? HERREN svarade: »Han har gömt sig bland trossen.»

23 Då skyndade de dit och hämtad honom därifrån, och när han nu trädde fram bland folket, var han huvudet högre än allt folket.

24 Och Samuel sade till allt folket: »Här sen I nu den som HERREN har utvalt; ingen är honom lik bland allt folket.» Då jublade allt folket och ropade: »Leve konungen!»

25 Och Samuel kungjorde för folket konungadömets rätt och tecknade upp den i en bok och lade ned den inför HERREN. Sedan lät Samuel allt folket gå hem, var och en till sitt.

26 Också Saul gick hem till Gibea; och honom följde en härskara av män vilkas hjärtan Gud hade rört.

27 Men några onda män sade: »Vad hjälp skulle denne kunna giva oss?» Och de föraktade honom och buro icke fram skänker till honom. Men han låtsade som om han icke märkte det.

11 Och ammoniten Nahas drog upp och belägrade Jabes i Gilead. Då sade alla män i Jabes till Nahas: »Slut fördrag med oss, så vilja vi bliva dig underdåniga.»

2 Men ammoniten Nahas svarade dem: »På det villkoret vill jag sluta fördrag med eder, att jag får sticka ut högra ögat på eder alla och därmed tillfoga hela Israel smälek.»

3 De äldste i Jabes sade till honom: »Giv oss sju dagars uppskov, så att vi kunna skicka sändebud över hela Israels land; om då ingen vill hjälpa oss, så skola vi giva oss åt dig.»

4 Så kommo nu sändebuden till Sauls Gibea och omtalade detta för folket. Då brast allt folket ut i gråt.

5 Men just då kom Saul gående bakom sina oxar från åkern. Och Saul frågade: »Vad fattas folket, eftersom de gråta?» Och de förtäljde för honom vad mannen från Jabes hade sagt.

6 Då kom Guds Ande över Saul, när han hörde detta, och hans vrede upptändes högeligen.

7 Och han tog ett par oxar och styckade dem och sände styckena omkring över hela Israels land med sändebuden och lät säga: »Den som icke drager ut efter Saul och Samuel, med hans oxar skall så göras.» Då föll en förskräckelse ifrån HERREN över folket, så att de drogo ut såsom en man.

8 Och han mönstrade dem i Besek, och Israels barn utgjorde då tre hundra tusen, och Juda män trettio tusen.

9 Och de sade till sändebuden som hade kommit: »Så skolen I säga till männen i Jabes i Gilead: I morgon skolen I få hjälp, när solen bränner som hetast.» Och sändebuden kommo och förkunnade detta för männen i Jabes; och dessa blevo glada däröver.

10 Nu läto männen i Jabes säga: »I morgon vilja vi giva oss åt eder, och I mån då göra med oss vadhelst I finnen för gott.»

11 Dagen därefter fördelade Saul folket i tre hopar; och de trängde in i lägret vid morgonväkten och nedgjorde ammoniterna, och upphörde först när det var som hetast på dagen. Och de som kommo undan blevo så kringspridda, att icke två av dem kommo undan tillsammans.

12 Då sade folket till Samuel: »Vilka voro de som sade: 'Skulle Saul bliva konung över oss!' Given hit dessa män, så att vi få döda dem.»

13 Men Saul sade: »På denna dag skall ingen dödas, ty i dag har HERREN givit seger åt Israel.»

14 Och Samuel sade till folket: »Kom, låt oss gå till Gilgal och där förnya konungadömet.»

15 Då gick allt folket till Gilgal och gjorde Saul till konung där, inför HERRENS ansikte, i Gilgal; och de offrade där tackoffer inför HERRENS ansikte. Och Saul och alla Israels män voro där uppfyllda av glädje.

12 Och Samuel sade till hela Israel: »Se, jag har lyssnat till edra ord och gjort allt vad I haven begärt av mig; jag har satt en konung över eder.

2 Nu är det eder konung som skall vara eder ledare, nu då jag är gammal och grå; I haven ju redan mina söner ibland eder. Hittills är det jag som har varit eder ledare, från min ungdom ända till denna dag.

3 Se har står jag, vittnen nu mot mig inför HERREN och inför hans smorde. Har jag tagit någons oxe, eller har jag tagit någons åsna? Har jag förtryckt någon eller övat våld mot någon? Har jag tagit mutor av någon, för att jag skulle se genom fingrarna med honom? Jag vill då giva eder ersättning därför.»

4 De svarade: »Du har icke förtryckt oss, du har icke övat våld mot oss; och från ingen människa har du tagit något.»

5 Då sade han till dem: »HERREN vare vittne mot -- eder, och hans smorde vare ock vittne denna dag, att I icke haven funnit något i min hand.» De svarade: »Ja, vare det så.»

6 Samuel sade till folket: »Ja, HERREN vare vittne, han som lät Mose och Aron uppstå och förde edra fäder upp ur Egyptens land.

7 Så träden nu fram, för att jag må gå till rätta med eder inför HERREN angående allt gott som HERREN i sin rättfärdighet har gjort mot eder och mot edra fäder.

8 När Jakob hade kommit fram till Egypten, ropade edra fäder till HERREN, och HERREN sände Mose och Aron, som förde edra fäder ut ur Egypten och läto dem bosätta sig här i landet.

9 Men när de glömde HERREN, sin Gud, sålde han dem i Siseras hand, härhövitsmannens i Hasor, och i filistéernas hand och i Moabs konungs hand, och dessa stridde mot dem.

10 Men då ropade till HERREN och sade: 'Vi hava syndat, ty vi hava övergivit HERREN och tjänat Baalerna och Astarterna; men rädda oss nu från våra fienders hand, så vilja vi tjäna dig.'

11 Då sände HERREN Jerubbaal och Bedan och Jefta och Samuel och räddade eder från edra fienders hand runt omkring, så att I fingen bo i trygghet.

12 Men när I sågen att Nahas, Ammons barns konung, kom emot eder, saden I till mig: 'Nej, en konung måste regera över oss', fastän det är HERREN, eder Gud, som är eder konung.

13 Och se, här är nu den konung I haven utvalt, den som I haven begärt; se, HERREN har satt en konung över eder.

14 Allenast man I nu frukta HERREN och tjäna honom och höra hans röst och icke vara gensträviga mot HERRENS befallning. Ja, både I och den konung som regerar över eder mån följa HERREN, eder Gud.

15 Men om I icke hören HERRENS röst, utan ären gensträviga mot HERRENS befallning, då skall HERRENS hand drabba eder likasom edra fäder.

16 Träden nu ock fram och sen det stora under som HERREN skall göra inför edra ögon.

17 Nu är ju tiden för veteskörden; men jag vill ropa till HERREN att han må låta det dundra och regna. Så skolen I märka och se huru mycket ont I haven gjort i HERRENS ögon genom eder begäran att få en konung.»

18 Och Samuel ropade till HERREN, och HERREN lät det dundra och regna på den dagen. Då betogs allt folket av stor fruktan för HERREN och för Samuel.

19 Och allt folket sade till Samuel: »Bed för dina tjänare till HERREN, din Gud, att vi icke må dö, eftersom vi till alla våra andra synder ock hava lagt det onda att vi hava begärt att få en konung.»

20 Samuel sade till folket: »Frukten icke. Väl haven I gjort allt detta onda; men viken nu blott icke av ifrån HERREN, utan tjänen HERREN av allt edert hjärta.

21 Viken icke av; ty då följen I tomma avgudar, som varken kunna hjälpa eller rädda, eftersom de äro allenast tomhet.

22 Ty HERREN skall icke förskjuta sitt folk, för sitt stora namns skull, eftersom HERREN har behagat att göra eder till sitt folk.

23 Vare det ock fjärran ifrån mig att jag skulle så synda mot HERREN, att jag upphörde att bedja för eder! Jag vill fastmer lära eder den goda och rätta vägen.

24 Allenast frukten HERREN och tjänen honom troget av allt edert hjärta. Ty sen vilka stora ting han har gjort med eder!

25 Men om I gören vad ont är, så skolen både I och eder konung förgås.»

13 Saul hade varit konung ett år, och när han nu regerade över Israel på andra året,

2 utvalde han åt sig tre tusen män ur Israel. Av dessa hade Saul själv hos sig två tusen i Mikmas och i Betels bergsbygd, och ett tusen hade Jonatan hos sig i Gibea i Benjamin. Men det övriga folket hade han låtit gå hem, var och en till sin hydda.

3 Och Jonatan dräpte filistéernas fogde i Geba; och filistéerna fingo höra det. Men Saul lät stöta i basun över hela landet och säga: »Detta må hebréerna höra.»

4 Så fick hela Israel höra omtalas att Saul hade dräpt filistéernas fogde, och att Israel därigenom hade blivit förhatligt för filistéerna. Och folket bådades upp att följa Saul till Gilgal.

5 Under tiden hade filistéerna församlat sig för att strida mot Israel: trettio tusen vagnar och sex tusen ryttare, och fotfolk så talrikt som sanden på havets strand; och de drogo upp och lägrade sig vid Mikmas, öster om Bet-Aven.

6 Då nu israeliterna sågo sig vara i nöd, i det att folket svårt ansattes, gömde sig folket i grottor, i skogssnår och bland klippor, i fasta valv och i gropar.

7 Och somliga av hebréerna gingo över Jordan in i Gads och Gileads land. Men Saul var ännu kvar i Gilgal; och allt folket följde honom med bävan.

8 När han nu hade väntat sju dagar, intill den tid Samuel hade bestämt men Samuel likväl icke kom till Gilgal, begynte folket skingra sig och gå ifrån honom.

9 Då sade Saul: »Fören fram till mig brännoffers- och tackoffersdjuren.» Därpå frambar han brännoffret.

10 Men just när han hade slutat att frambära brännoffret, kom Samuel. Då gick Saul honom till mötes för att hälsa honom.

11 Men Samuel sade: »Vad har du gjort!» Saul svarade: »När jag såg att folket skingrade sig och gick ifrån mig, under det att du icke kom inom den bestämda tiden, fastän filistéerna voro församlade vid Mikmas,

12 då tänkte jag: Nu komma filistéerna hitned mot mig i Gilgal, och jag har ännu icke bönfallit inför HERREN. Då tog jag mod till mig och offrade brännoffret.»

13 Samuel sade till Saul: »Du har handlat dåraktigt. Du har icke hållit det bud HERREN, din Gud, har givit dig; eljest skulle HERREN hava befäst ditt konungadöme över Israel för evig tid.

14 Men nu skall ditt konungadöme icke bliva beståndande. HERREN har sökt sig en man efter sitt hjärta, och honom har HERREN förordnat till furste över sitt folk, eftersom du icke har hållit vad HERREN bjöd dig.»

15 Därefter stod Samuel upp och gick från Gilgal till Gibea i Benjamin. Men Saul mönstrade det folk som fanns hos honom: vid pass sex hundra man.

16 Och Saul och hans son Jonatan stannade i Geba i Benjamin med det folk som fanns hos dem, under det att filistéerna hade lägrat sig vid Mikmas.

17 Och en härskara, delad i tre hopar, drog ut ur filistéernas läger för att härja: en hop tog vägen till Ofra i Sualslandet,

18 en hop tog vägen till Bet-Horon, och en hop tog vägen till det område som vetter åt Seboimsdalen, åt öknen till.

19 Ingen smed fanns då i hela Israels land, ty filistéerna fruktade att hebréerna skulle låta göra sig svärd eller spjut.

20 Och så måste en israelit alltid begiva sig ned till filistéerna, om han ville låta vässa sin lie eller sin plogbill eller sin yxa eller sin skära,

21 när det hade blivit något fel med eggen på skärorna eller plogbillarna, eller med gafflarna eller yxorna, eller när oxpikarnas uddar behövde rätas.

22 Härav kom sig, att när striden skulle stå, ingen enda av Sauls och Jonatans folk hade ett svärd eller ett spjut; allenast Saul själv och hans son Jonatan hade sådana.

23 Men filistéerna läto en utpost rycka fram till passet vid Mikmas.

14 Så hände sig nu en dag att Jonatan, Sauls son, sade till sin vapendragare: »Kom, låt oss gå över till filistéernas utpost där på andra sidan.» Men han omtalade det icke för sin fader.

2 Saul vistades då vid Gibeas gräns, under granatträdet i Migron, och folket som han hade hos sig utgjorde vid pass sex hundra man;

3 och Ahia, son till Ahitub, som var broder till I-Kabod, son till Pinehas, son till Eli, HERRENS präst i Silo, har då efoden. Och folket visste icke om, att Jonatan hade gått bort.

4 Men i passet, där Jonatan sökte gå över för att komma till filistéernas utpost, låg på vardera sidan en brant klippa; den ena hette Boses och den andra Sene.

5 Den ena klippan reste sig i norr, mitt emot Mikmas, den andra i söder, mitt emot Geba.

6 Och Jonatan sade till sin vapendragare: »Kom, låt oss gå över till dessa oomskurnas utpost, kanhända skall HERREN göra något för oss. Ty intet hindrar HERREN att giva seger genom få likasåväl som genom många.»

7 Hans vapendragare svarade honom: »Gör allt vad du har i sinnet. Gå du åstad; jag följer dig vart du vill.»

8 Då sade Jonatan: »Välan, vi skola gå över till männen där och laga så, att de få se oss.

9 Om de då säga till oss så: 'Stån stilla, till dess vi komma fram till eder', då skola vi stanna där vi äro och icke stiga upp till dem.

10 Om de däremot säga så: 'Kommen hitupp till oss', då skola vi stiga ditupp, ty då har HERREN givit dem i vår hand; detta skall för oss vara tecknet härtill.»

11 När nu de två hade blivit synliga för filistéernas utpost, sade filistéerna: »Se, hebréerna krypa ut ur hålen där de hava gömt sig.»

12 Därpå ropade utpostens manskap till Jonatan och hans vapendragare och sade: »Kommen hitupp till oss, så skola vi väl lära eder!» Då sade Jonatan till sin vapendragare: »Följ mig ditupp, ty HERREN har givit dem i Israels hand.»

13 Och Jonatan klättrade på händer och fötter uppför, och hans vapendragare följde honom. Och de föllo för Jonatan; och hans vapendragare gick efter honom och gav dem dödsstöten.

14 I det första anfallet nedgjorde så Jonatan och hans vapendragare vid pass tjugu män, på en sträcka av vid pass ett halvt plogland.

15 Då uppstod förskräckelse i lägret på fältet och bland allt folket; utposterna och de som hade gått ut för att härja grepos ock av förskräckelse. Och marken darrade, så att en förskräckelse ifrån Gud uppstod.

16 Och Sauls väktare i Gibea i Benjamin fingo se att hopen var i upplösning, och att man sprang hit och dit.

17 Då sade Saul till folket som han hade hos sig: »Hållen mönstring och sen efter, vem som har gått ifrån oss.» När de då höllo mönstring, funno de att Jonatan och hans vapendragare icke voro där.

18 Då sade Saul till Ahia: »För hit Guds ark.» Ty Guds ark fanns på den tiden bland Israels barn.

19 Medan Saul ännu talade med prästen, tilltog larmet i filistéernas läger allt mer och mer. Då sade Saul till prästen: »Låt det vara.»

20 Och Saul och allt det folk som han hade hos sig församlade sig och drogo till stridsplatsen; där fingo de se att den ene hade lyft sitt svärd mot den andre, så att en mycket stor förvirring hade uppstått.

21 Och de hebréer som sedan gammalt lydde under filistéerna, och som hade dragit hitupp med dem och voro här och där i lägret, dessa slöto sig nu ock till de israeliter som anfördes av Saul och Jonatan.

22 Och när de israeliter som hade gömt sig i Efraims bergsbygd hörde att filistéerna flydde, satte alla dessa också efter dem och deltogo i striden.

23 Så gav HERREN Israel seger på den dagen, och striden fortsattes ända bortom Bet-Aven.

24 När nu Israels män på den dagen voro hårt ansträngda, band Saul folket med följande ed: »Förbannad vare den man som förtär någon föda före aftonen, och innan jag har tagit hämnd på mina fiender.» Så smakade då ingen av folket någon föda.

25 Och när de allasammans kommo in i skogsbygden, låg honung på marken.

26 Men när folket hade kommit in i skogsbygden och fått se den utflutna honungen, vågade dock ingen föra handen upp till munnen, ty folket fruktade för eden.

27 Jonatan däremot hade icke hört, när hans fader band folket med eden; därför räckte han ut staven som han hade i sin hand och doppade dess ända i honungskakan, och förde så handen till munnen; då kunde hans ögon åter se klart.

28 Men en man bland folket tog till orda och sade: »Din fader har bundit folket med en dyr ed och sagt: 'Förbannad vare den man som dag förtär någon föda.'» Och folket var uttröttat.

29 Jonatan svarade: »Min fader har därmed dragit olycka över landet. Sen huru klara mina ögon hava blivit, därför att jag smakade något litet av honungen här.

30 Huru mycket mer, om folket i dag hade fått äta sig mätta av bytet som de hade tagit från sina fiender -- huru mycket större skulle icke då filistéernas nederlag hava blivit!»

31 Emellertid slogo de filistéerna på den dagen och förföljde dem från Mikmas till Ajalon. Och folket var mycket uttröttat.

32 Därför kastade sig folket över bytet och tog får, oxar och kalvar och slaktade dem på marken; och folket åt sedan köttet med blodet i.

33 När man berättade detta för Saul och sade: »Se, folket syndar mot HERREN genom att äta kött med blodet i», utropade han: »I haven handlat brottsligt. Vältren nu fram till mig en stor sten.»

34 Och Saul sade vidare: »Gån ut bland folket och sägen till dem 'Var och en före fram till mig sin oxe och sitt får, och slakten dem här och äten; synden icke mot HERREN genom att äta köttet med blodet i.'» Då förde allt folket, var och en med egen hand, om natten fram sina oxar och slaktade dem där.

35 Och Saul byggde ett altare åt HERREN; detta var det första altare som han byggde åt HERREN.

36 Och Saul sade: »Låt oss i natt draga ned och förfölja filistéerna och anställa plundring bland dem, ända till dess det bliver dager i morgon, och låt oss laga så, att ingen av dem bliver kvar.» De svarade: »Gör allt vad dig täckes.» Men prästen sade: »Låt oss träda fram hit till Gud.»

37 Då frågade Saul Gud: »Skall jag draga ned och förfölja filistéerna? Vill du då giva dem i Israels hand?» Men han gav honom intet svar den dagen.

38 Då sade Saul: »Kommen hitfram, alla I folkets förnämsta män, för att I mån få veta och se vari den synd består, som i dag har blivit begången.

39 Ty så sant HERREN lever, han som har givit Israel seger: om den ock vore begången av min son Jonatan, skall han döden dö.» Men ingen bland allt folket svarade honom.

40 Då sade han till hela Israel: »Ställen I eder på ena sidan, så vill jag med min son Jonatan ställa mig på andra sidan.» Folket svarade Saul: »Gör vad dig täckes.»

41 Och Saul sade till HERREN, »Israels Gud: »Låt sanningen komma i dagen.» Då träffades Jonatan och Saul av lotten, och folket gick fritt.

42 Saul sade: »Kasten lott mellan mig och min son Jonatan.» Då träffades Jonatan av lotten.

43 Saul sade till Jonatan: »Omtala för mig vad du har gjort.» Då omtalade Jonatan det för honom och sade: »Med ändan av staven som jag hade i min hand tog jag litet honung och smakade därpå -- och så skall jag nu dö!»

44 Saul svarade: »Ja, Gud straffe mig nu och framgent: du måste döden dö, Jonatan.»

45 Men folket sade till Saul: »Skulle Jonatan dö, han som har förskaffat Israel denna stora seger? Bort det! Så sant HERREN lever, icke ett hår från hans huvud skall falla till jorden; ty med Guds hjälp har han i dag utfört detta.» Och folket köpte Jonatan fri ifrån döden.

46 Och Saul drog hem, utan att vidare förfölja filistéerna; filistéerna begåvo sig ock hem till sitt.

47 När Saul nu hade tagit konungadömet över Israel i besittning, förde han krig mot alla sina fiender runt omkring: mot Moab, mot Ammons barn, mot Edom, mot konungarna i Soba och mot filistéerna; och vart han vände sig tuktade han dem.

48 Han gjorde mäktiga ting och slog Amalek och räddade så Israel från dess plundrares hand.

49 Sauls söner voro Jonatan, Jisvi och Malki-Sua; och av hans båda döttrar hette den äldre Merab och den yngre Mikal.

50 Sauls hustru hette Ahinoam, Ahimaas' dotter. Hans härhövitsman hette Abiner, son till Ner, som var Sauls farbroder.

51 Ty Kis, Sauls fader, och Ner, Abners fader, voro söner till Abiel.

52 Men kriget mot filistéerna pågick häftigt, så länge Saul levde. Och varhelst Saul såg någon rask och krigsduglig man tog han honom i sin tjänst.

15 Men Samuel sade till Saul: »Det var mig HERREN sände att smörja dig till konung över sitt folk Israel. Så hör nu HERRENS ord.

2 Så säger HERREN Sebaot: Jag vill hemsöka Amalek för det som han gjorde mot Israel, att han lade sig i vägen för honom, när han drog upp ur Egypten.

3 Så drag nu åstad och slå amalekiterna och giv dem till spillo, med allt vad de hava, och skona dem icke, utan döda både män och kvinnor, både barn och spenabarn, både fäkreatur och får, både kameler och åsnor.»

4 Då bådade Saul upp folket och mönstrade dem i Telaim: två hundra tusen man fotfolk, och dessutom tio tusen man från Juda.

5 När Saul sedan kom till Amaleks stad, lade han ett bakhåll i dalen.

6 Men till kainéerna lät Saul säga: »Skiljen eder från amalekiterna och dragen ned, för att jag icke må utrota eder tillsammans med dem. I bevisaden ju barmhärtighet mot alla Israels barn, när de drogo ut ur Egypten.» Då skilde sig kainéerna från amalekiterna.

7 Och Saul slog amalekiterna och förföljde dem från Havila fram emot Sur, som ligger öster om Egypten.

8 Och han tog Agag, Amaleks konung, levande till fånga, och allt folket gav han till spillo, och han slog dem med svärdsegg.

9 Men Saul och folket skonade Agag, så ock det bästa och det näst bästa av får och fäkreatur jämte lammen, korteligen, allt som var av värde; sådant ville de icke giva till spillo. All boskap däremot, som var dålig och mager, gåvo de till spillo.

10 Då kom HERRENS ord till Samuel; han sade:

11 »Jag ångrar att jag har gjort Saul till konung, ty han har vänt sig bort ifrån mig och icke fullgjort mina befallningar.» Detta gick Samuel hårt till sinnes, och han ropade till HERREN hela den natten.

12 Och bittida om morgonen stod Samuel upp och gick för att möta Saul. Då blev det berättat för Samuel att Saul hade kommit till Karmel och där rest åt sig en minnesstod, och att han sedan hade vänt om och dragit därifrån ned till Gilgal.

13 När nu Samuel kom till Saul, sade Saul till honom: »Välsignad vare du av HERREN. Jag har nu fullgjort HERRENS befallning.»

14 Men Samuel sade: »Vad är det då för ett läte av får som ljuder i mina öron, och vad är det för ett läte av fäkreatur som jag hör?»

17 Samuel sade: »Se, fastän du var ringa i dina egna ögon, har du blivit ett huvud för Israels stammar, ty HERREN smorde dig till konung över Israel.

18 Och HERREN sände dig åstad och sade: 'Gå och giv till spillo amalekiterna, de syndarna, och strid mot dem, till dess att du har förgjort dem.'

19 Varför har du då icke hört HERRENS röst, utan kastat dig över bytet och gjort vad ont är i HERRENS ögon?»

20 Saul svarade Samuel: »Jag har ju hört HERRENS röst och gått den väg på vilken HERREN har sänt mig. Jag har fört hit Agag, Amaleks konung, och givit Amalek till spillo.

21 Men folket tog av bytet far och fäkreatur, det bästa av det tillspillogivna, för att offra det åt HERREN din Gud, i Gilgal.»

22 Då sade Samuel: »Menar du att HERREN har samma behag till brännoffer och slaktoffer som därtill att man hör HERRENS röst? Nej, lydnad är bättre än offer, och hörsamhet bättre än det feta av vädurar.

23 Ty gensträvighet är trolldomssynd, och motspänstighet är avguderi och husgudsdyrkan. Eftersom du har förkastat HERRENS ord, har han ock förkastat dig, och du skall icke längre vara konung.»

24 Saul sade till Samuel: »Jag har syndat därmed att jag har överträtt HERRENS befallning och handlat emot dina ord; ty jag fruktade för folket och lyssnade till deras ord.

25 Men förlåt mig nu min synd, och vänd tillbaka med mig, så att jag får tillbedja HERREN.»

26 Samuel sade till Saul: »Jag vänder icke tillbaka med dig; ty då du har förkastat HERRENS ord, har HERREN ock förkastat dig, så att du icke längre får vara konung över Israel.»

27 När nu Samuel vände sig om för att gå, fattade han i hörnet på hans mantel, och den rycktes sönder.

28 Och Samuel sade till honom: »HERREN har i dag ryckt Israels konungarike från dig och givit det åt en annan, som är bättre än du.

29 Och den Härlige i Israel ljuger icke och ångrar sig icke; ty han är icke en människa, så att han skulle kunna ångra sig.»

30 Han svarade: »Jag har syndat; men bevisa mig dock nu den äran inför de äldste i mitt folk och inför Israel, att du vänder tillbaka med mig, så att jag får tillbedja HERREN, din Gud.»

31 Då vände Samuel tillbaka och följde med Saul; och Saul tillbad HERREN.

32 Och Samuel sade: »Fören fram till mig Agag, Amaleks konung.» Då gick Agag med glatt mod fram till honom. Och Agag sade: »Välan, snart är dödens bitterhet överstånden.»

Israel Asks for a King

8 When Samuel grew old, he appointed(A) his sons as Israel’s leaders.[a] 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah,(B) and they served at Beersheba.(C) 3 But his sons(D) did not follow his ways. They turned aside(E) after dishonest gain and accepted bribes(F) and perverted(G) justice.

4 So all the elders(H) of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.(I) 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king(J) to lead[b](K) us, such as all the other nations(L) have.”

6 But when they said, “Give us a king(M) to lead us,” this displeased(N) Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord told him: “Listen(O) to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected,(P) but they have rejected me as their king.(Q) 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking(R) me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know(S) what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”

10 Samuel told(T) all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take(U) your sons and make them serve(V) with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.(W) 12 Some he will assign to be commanders(X) of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your(Y) fields and vineyards(Z) and olive groves and give them to his attendants.(AA) 15 He will take a tenth(AB) of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[c] and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer(AC) you in that day.(AD)”

19 But the people refused(AE) to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want(AF) a king(AG) over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations,(AH) with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”

21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated(AI) it before the Lord. 22 The Lord answered, “Listen(AJ) to them and give them a king.”

Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”

Samuel Anoints Saul

9 There was a Benjamite,(AK) a man of standing,(AL) whose name was Kish(AM) son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bekorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin. 2 Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome(AN) a young man as could be found(AO) anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller(AP) than anyone else.

3 Now the donkeys(AQ) belonging to Saul’s father Kish were lost, and Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go and look for the donkeys.” 4 So he passed through the hill(AR) country of Ephraim and through the area around Shalisha,(AS) but they did not find them. They went on into the district of Shaalim, but the donkeys(AT) were not there. Then he passed through the territory of Benjamin, but they did not find them.

5 When they reached the district of Zuph,(AU) Saul said to the servant who was with him, “Come, let’s go back, or my father will stop thinking about the donkeys and start worrying(AV) about us.”

6 But the servant replied, “Look, in this town there is a man of God;(AW) he is highly respected, and everything(AX) he says comes true. Let’s go there now. Perhaps he will tell us what way to take.”

7 Saul said to his servant, “If we go, what can we give the man? The food in our sacks is gone. We have no gift(AY) to take to the man of God. What do we have?”

8 The servant answered him again. “Look,” he said, “I have a quarter of a shekel[d] of silver. I will give it to the man of God so that he will tell us what way to take.” 9 (Formerly in Israel, if someone went to inquire(AZ) of God, they would say, “Come, let us go to the seer,” because the prophet of today used to be called a seer.)(BA)

10 “Good,” Saul said to his servant. “Come, let’s go.” So they set out for the town where the man of God was.

11 As they were going up the hill to the town, they met some young women coming out to draw(BB) water, and they asked them, “Is the seer here?”

12 “He is,” they answered. “He’s ahead of you. Hurry now; he has just come to our town today, for the people have a sacrifice(BC) at the high place.(BD) 13 As soon as you enter the town, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not begin eating until he comes, because he must bless(BE) the sacrifice; afterward, those who are invited will eat. Go up now; you should find him about this time.”

14 They went up to the town, and as they were entering it, there was Samuel, coming toward them on his way up to the high place.

15 Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed this to Samuel: 16 “About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint(BF) him ruler(BG) over my people Israel; he will deliver(BH) them from the hand of the Philistines.(BI) I have looked on my people, for their cry(BJ) has reached me.”

17 When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the Lord said to him, “This(BK) is the man I spoke to you about; he will govern my people.”

18 Saul approached Samuel in the gateway and asked, “Would you please tell me where the seer’s house is?”

19 “I am the seer,” Samuel replied. “Go up ahead of me to the high place, for today you are to eat with me, and in the morning I will send you on your way and will tell you all that is in your heart. 20 As for the donkeys(BL) you lost three days ago, do not worry about them; they have been found. And to whom is all the desire(BM) of Israel turned, if not to you and your whole family line?”

21 Saul answered, “But am I not a Benjamite, from the smallest tribe(BN) of Israel, and is not my clan the least(BO) of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin?(BP) Why do you say such a thing to me?”

22 Then Samuel brought Saul and his servant into the hall and seated them at the head of those who were invited—about thirty in number. 23 Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the piece of meat I gave you, the one I told you to lay aside.”

24 So the cook took up the thigh(BQ) with what was on it and set it in front of Saul. Samuel said, “Here is what has been kept for you. Eat, because it was set aside for you for this occasion from the time I said, ‘I have invited guests.’” And Saul dined with Samuel that day.

25 After they came down from the high place to the town, Samuel talked with Saul on the roof(BR) of his house. 26 They rose about daybreak, and Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get ready, and I will send you on your way.” When Saul got ready, he and Samuel went outside together. 27 As they were going down to the edge of the town, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us”—and the servant did so—“but you stay here for a while, so that I may give you a message from God.”

10 Then Samuel took a flask(BS) of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not the Lord anointed(BT) you ruler over his inheritance?[e](BU) 2 When you leave me today, you will meet two men near Rachel’s tomb,(BV) at Zelzah on the border of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys(BW) you set out to look for have been found. And now your father has stopped thinking about them and is worried(BX) about you. He is asking, “What shall I do about my son?”’

3 “Then you will go on from there until you reach the great tree of Tabor. Three men going up to worship God at Bethel(BY) will meet you there. One will be carrying three young goats, another three loaves of bread, and another a skin of wine. 4 They will greet you and offer you two loaves of bread,(BZ) which you will accept from them.

5 “After that you will go to Gibeah(CA) of God, where there is a Philistine outpost.(CB) As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets(CC) coming down from the high place(CD) with lyres, timbrels,(CE) pipes(CF) and harps(CG) being played before them, and they will be prophesying.(CH) 6 The Spirit(CI) of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed(CJ) into a different person. 7 Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever(CK) your hand(CL) finds to do, for God is with(CM) you.

8 “Go down ahead of me to Gilgal.(CN) I will surely come down to you to sacrifice burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, but you must wait seven(CO) days until I come to you and tell you what you are to do.”

Saul Made King

9 As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed(CP) Saul’s heart, and all these signs(CQ) were fulfilled(CR) that day. 10 When he and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit(CS) of God came powerfully upon him, and he joined in their prophesying.(CT) 11 When all those who had formerly known him saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other, “What is this(CU) that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”(CV)

12 A man who lived there answered, “And who is their father?” So it became a saying: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”(CW) 13 After Saul stopped prophesying,(CX) he went to the high place.

14 Now Saul’s uncle(CY) asked him and his servant, “Where have you been?”

“Looking for the donkeys,(CZ)” he said. “But when we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.”

15 Saul’s uncle said, “Tell me what Samuel said to you.”

16 Saul replied, “He assured us that the donkeys(DA) had been found.” But he did not tell his uncle what Samuel had said about the kingship.

17 Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the Lord at Mizpah(DB) 18 and said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed(DC) you.’ 19 But you have now rejected(DD) your God, who saves(DE) you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, ‘No, appoint a king(DF) over us.’(DG) So now present(DH) yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and clans.”

20 When Samuel had all Israel come forward by tribes, the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. 21 Then he brought forward the tribe of Benjamin, clan by clan, and Matri’s clan was taken.(DI) Finally Saul son of Kish was taken. But when they looked for him, he was not to be found. 22 So they inquired(DJ) further of the Lord, “Has the man come here yet?”

And the Lord said, “Yes, he has hidden himself among the supplies.”

23 They ran and brought him out, and as he stood among the people he was a head taller(DK) than any of the others. 24 Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the man the Lord has chosen?(DL) There is no one like(DM) him among all the people.”

Then the people shouted, “Long live(DN) the king!”

25 Samuel explained(DO) to the people the rights and duties(DP) of kingship.(DQ) He wrote them down on a scroll and deposited it before the Lord. Then Samuel dismissed the people to go to their own homes.

26 Saul also went to his home in Gibeah,(DR) accompanied by valiant men(DS) whose hearts God had touched. 27 But some scoundrels(DT) said, “How can this fellow save us?” They despised him and brought him no gifts.(DU) But Saul kept silent.

Saul Rescues the City of Jabesh

11 Nahash[f](DV) the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh Gilead.(DW) And all the men of Jabesh said to him, “Make a treaty(DX) with us, and we will be subject to you.”

2 But Nahash the Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you only on the condition(DY) that I gouge(DZ) out the right eye of every one of you and so bring disgrace(EA) on all Israel.”

3 The elders(EB) of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days so we can send messengers throughout Israel; if no one comes to rescue(EC) us, we will surrender(ED) to you.”

4 When the messengers came to Gibeah(EE) of Saul and reported these terms to the people, they all wept(EF) aloud. 5 Just then Saul was returning from the fields, behind his oxen, and he asked, “What is wrong with everyone? Why are they weeping?” Then they repeated to him what the men of Jabesh had said.

6 When Saul heard their words, the Spirit(EG) of God came powerfully upon him, and he burned with anger. 7 He took a pair of oxen,(EH) cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers throughout Israel,(EI) proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone(EJ) who does not follow Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out together as one.(EK) 8 When Saul mustered(EL) them at Bezek,(EM) the men of Israel numbered three hundred thousand and those of Judah thirty thousand.

9 They told the messengers who had come, “Say to the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘By the time the sun is hot tomorrow, you will be rescued.’” When the messengers went and reported this to the men of Jabesh, they were elated. 10 They said to the Ammonites, “Tomorrow we will surrender(EN) to you, and you can do to us whatever you like.”

11 The next day Saul separated his men into three divisions;(EO) during the last watch of the night they broke into the camp of the Ammonites(EP) and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

Saul Confirmed as King

12 The people then said to Samuel, “Who(EQ) was it that asked, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Turn these men over to us so that we may put them to death.”

13 But Saul said, “No one will be put to death today,(ER) for this day the Lord has rescued(ES) Israel.”

14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal(ET) and there renew the kingship.(EU)” 15 So all the people went to Gilgal(EV) and made Saul king(EW) in the presence of the Lord. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings before the Lord, and Saul and all the Israelites held a great celebration.

Samuel’s Farewell Speech

12 Samuel said to all Israel, “I have listened(EX) to everything you said to me and have set a king(EY) over you. 2 Now you have a king as your leader.(EZ) As for me, I am old and gray, and my sons(FA) are here with you. I have been your leader from my youth until this day. 3 Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the Lord and his anointed.(FB) Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey(FC) have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe(FD) to make me shut my eyes? If I have done(FE) any of these things, I will make it right.”(FF)

4 “You have not cheated or oppressed us,” they replied. “You have not taken anything from anyone’s hand.”

5 Samuel said to them, “The Lord is witness(FG) against you, and also his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything(FH) in my hand.(FI)”

“He is witness,” they said.

6 Then Samuel said to the people, “It is the Lord who appointed Moses and Aaron and brought(FJ) your ancestors up out of Egypt. 7 Now then, stand(FK) here, because I am going to confront(FL) you with evidence before the Lord as to all the righteous acts(FM) performed by the Lord for you and your ancestors.

8 “After Jacob(FN) entered Egypt, they cried(FO) to the Lord for help, and the Lord sent(FP) Moses and Aaron, who brought your ancestors out of Egypt and settled them in this place.

9 “But they forgot(FQ) the Lord their God; so he sold them(FR) into the hand of Sisera,(FS) the commander of the army of Hazor,(FT) and into the hands of the Philistines(FU) and the king of Moab,(FV) who fought against them. 10 They cried(FW) out to the Lord and said, ‘We have sinned; we have forsaken(FX) the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtoreths.(FY) But now deliver us from the hands of our enemies, and we will serve you.’ 11 Then the Lord sent Jerub-Baal,[g](FZ) Barak,[h](GA) Jephthah(GB) and Samuel,[i](GC) and he delivered you from the hands of your enemies all around you, so that you lived in safety.

12 “But when you saw that Nahash(GD) king(GE) of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we want a king to rule(GF) over us’—even though the Lord your God was your king. 13 Now here is the king(GG) you have chosen, the one you asked(GH) for; see, the Lord has set a king over you. 14 If you fear(GI) the Lord and serve and obey him and do not rebel(GJ) against his commands, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the Lord your God—good! 15 But if you do not obey the Lord, and if you rebel against(GK) his commands, his hand will be against you, as it was against your ancestors.

16 “Now then, stand still(GL) and see(GM) this great thing the Lord is about to do before your eyes! 17 Is it not wheat harvest(GN) now? I will call(GO) on the Lord to send thunder(GP) and rain.(GQ) And you will realize what an evil(GR) thing you did in the eyes of the Lord when you asked for a king.”

18 Then Samuel called on the Lord,(GS) and that same day the Lord sent thunder and rain. So all the people stood in awe(GT) of the Lord and of Samuel.

19 The people all said to Samuel, “Pray(GU) to the Lord your God for your servants so that we will not die,(GV) for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king.”

20 “Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “You have done all this evil;(GW) yet do not turn away from the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. 21 Do not turn away after useless(GX) idols.(GY) They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless. 22 For the sake(GZ) of his great name(HA) the Lord will not reject(HB) his people, because the Lord was pleased to make(HC) you his own. 23 As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray(HD) for you. And I will teach(HE) you the way that is good and right. 24 But be sure to fear(HF) the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart;(HG) consider(HH) what great(HI) things he has done for you. 25 Yet if you persist(HJ) in doing evil, both you and your king(HK) will perish.”(HL)

Samuel Rebukes Saul

13 Saul was thirty[j] years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel forty-[k] two years.

2 Saul chose three thousand men from Israel; two thousand(HM) were with him at Mikmash(HN) and in the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan at Gibeah(HO) in Benjamin. The rest of the men he sent back to their homes.

3 Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost(HP) at Geba,(HQ) and the Philistines heard about it. Then Saul had the trumpet(HR) blown throughout the land and said, “Let the Hebrews hear!” 4 So all Israel heard the news: “Saul has attacked the Philistine outpost, and now Israel has become obnoxious(HS) to the Philistines.” And the people were summoned to join Saul at Gilgal.

5 The Philistines assembled(HT) to fight Israel, with three thousand[l] chariots, six thousand charioteers, and soldiers as numerous as the sand(HU) on the seashore. They went up and camped at Mikmash,(HV) east of Beth Aven.(HW) 6 When the Israelites saw that their situation was critical and that their army was hard pressed, they hid(HX) in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in pits and cisterns.(HY) 7 Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad(HZ) and Gilead.

Saul remained at Gilgal, and all the troops with him were quaking(IA) with fear. 8 He waited seven(IB) days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul’s men began to scatter. 9 So he said, “Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings.” And Saul offered(IC) up the burnt offering. 10 Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel(ID) arrived, and Saul went out to greet(IE) him.

11 “What have you done?” asked Samuel.

Saul replied, “When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Mikmash,(IF) 12 I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal,(IG) and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.(IH)’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”

13 “You have done a foolish thing,(II)” Samuel said. “You have not kept(IJ) the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.(IK) 14 But now your kingdom(IL) will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart(IM) and appointed(IN) him ruler(IO) of his people, because you have not kept(IP) the Lord’s command.”

15 Then Samuel left Gilgal[m] and went up to Gibeah(IQ) in Benjamin, and Saul counted the men who were with him. They numbered about six hundred.(IR)

Israel Without Weapons

16 Saul and his son Jonathan and the men with them were staying in Gibeah[n](IS) in Benjamin, while the Philistines camped at Mikmash. 17 Raiding(IT) parties went out from the Philistine camp in three detachments. One turned toward Ophrah(IU) in the vicinity of Shual, 18 another toward Beth Horon,(IV) and the third toward the borderland overlooking the Valley of Zeboyim(IW) facing the wilderness.

19 Not a blacksmith(IX) could be found in the whole land of Israel, because the Philistines had said, “Otherwise the Hebrews will make swords or spears!(IY)” 20 So all Israel went down to the Philistines to have their plow points, mattocks, axes and sickles[o] sharpened. 21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel[p] for sharpening plow points and mattocks, and a third of a shekel[q] for sharpening forks and axes and for repointing goads.

22 So on the day of the battle not a soldier with Saul and Jonathan(IZ) had a sword or spear(JA) in his hand; only Saul and his son Jonathan had them.

Jonathan Attacks the Philistines

23 Now a detachment of Philistines had gone out to the pass(JB) at Mikmash.(JC) 14 1 One day Jonathan son of Saul said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side.” But he did not tell his father.

2 Saul was staying(JD) on the outskirts of Gibeah(JE) under a pomegranate tree(JF) in Migron.(JG) With him were about six hundred men, 3 among whom was Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod’s(JH) brother Ahitub(JI) son of Phinehas, the son of Eli,(JJ) the Lord’s priest in Shiloh.(JK) No one was aware that Jonathan had left.

4 On each side of the pass(JL) that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost was a cliff; one was called Bozez and the other Seneh. 5 One cliff stood to the north toward Mikmash, the other to the south toward Geba.(JM)

6 Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised(JN) men. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing(JO) can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many(JP) or by few.(JQ)”

7 “Do all that you have in mind,” his armor-bearer said. “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”

8 Jonathan said, “Come on, then; we will cross over toward them and let them see us. 9 If they say to us, ‘Wait there until we come to you,’ we will stay where we are and not go up to them. 10 But if they say, ‘Come up to us,’ we will climb up, because that will be our sign(JR) that the Lord has given them into our hands.(JS)”

11 So both of them showed themselves to the Philistine outpost. “Look!” said the Philistines. “The Hebrews(JT) are crawling out of the holes they were hiding(JU) in.” 12 The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, “Come up to us and we’ll teach you a lesson.(JV)”

So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, “Climb up after me; the Lord has given them into the hand(JW) of Israel.”

13 Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer right behind him. The Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer followed and killed behind him. 14 In that first attack Jonathan and his armor-bearer killed some twenty men in an area of about half an acre.

Israel Routs the Philistines

15 Then panic(JX) struck the whole army—those in the camp and field, and those in the outposts and raiding(JY) parties—and the ground shook. It was a panic sent by God.[r]

16 Saul’s lookouts(JZ) at Gibeah in Benjamin saw the army melting away in all directions. 17 Then Saul said to the men who were with him, “Muster the forces and see who has left us.” When they did, it was Jonathan and his armor-bearer who were not there.

18 Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring(KA) the ark(KB) of God.” (At that time it was with the Israelites.)[s] 19 While Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest,(KC) “Withdraw your hand.”

20 Then Saul and all his men assembled and went to the battle. They found the Philistines in total confusion, striking(KD) each other with their swords. 21 Those Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines and had gone up with them to their camp went(KE) over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. 22 When all the Israelites who had hidden(KF) in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were on the run, they joined the battle in hot pursuit. 23 So on that day the Lord saved(KG) Israel, and the battle moved on beyond Beth Aven.(KH)

Jonathan Eats Honey

24 Now the Israelites were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath,(KI) saying, “Cursed be anyone who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!” So none of the troops tasted food.

25 The entire army entered the woods, and there was honey on the ground. 26 When they went into the woods, they saw the honey oozing out; yet no one put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath. 27 But Jonathan had not heard that his father had bound the people with the oath, so he reached out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it into the honeycomb.(KJ) He raised his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.[t] 28 Then one of the soldiers told him, “Your father bound the army under a strict oath, saying, ‘Cursed be anyone who eats food today!’ That is why the men are faint.”

29 Jonathan said, “My father has made trouble(KK) for the country. See how my eyes brightened when I tasted a little of this honey. 30 How much better it would have been if the men had eaten today some of the plunder they took from their enemies. Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?”

31 That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines from Mikmash(KL) to Aijalon,(KM) they were exhausted. 32 They pounced on the plunder(KN) and, taking sheep, cattle and calves, they butchered them on the ground and ate them, together with the blood.(KO) 33 Then someone said to Saul, “Look, the men are sinning against the Lord by eating meat that has blood(KP) in it.”

“You have broken faith,” he said. “Roll a large stone over here at once.” 34 Then he said, “Go out among the men and tell them, ‘Each of you bring me your cattle and sheep, and slaughter them here and eat them. Do not sin against the Lord by eating meat with blood still(KQ) in it.’”

So everyone brought his ox that night and slaughtered it there. 35 Then Saul built an altar(KR) to the Lord; it was the first time he had done this.

36 Saul said, “Let us go down and pursue the Philistines by night and plunder them till dawn, and let us not leave one of them alive.”

“Do whatever seems best to you,” they replied.

But the priest said, “Let us inquire(KS) of God here.”

37 So Saul asked God, “Shall I go down and pursue the Philistines? Will you give them into Israel’s hand?” But God did not answer(KT) him that day.

38 Saul therefore said, “Come here, all you who are leaders of the army, and let us find out what sin has been committed(KU) today. 39 As surely as the Lord who rescues Israel lives,(KV) even if the guilt lies with my son Jonathan,(KW) he must die.”(KX) But not one of them said a word.

40 Saul then said to all the Israelites, “You stand over there; I and Jonathan my son will stand over here.”

“Do what seems best to you,” they replied.

41 Then Saul prayed to the Lord, the God of Israel, “Why have you not answered your servant today? If the fault is in me or my son Jonathan, respond with Urim, but if the men of Israel are at fault,[u] respond with Thummim.” Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot, and the men were cleared. 42 Saul said, “Cast the lot(KY) between me and Jonathan my son.” And Jonathan was taken.

43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.”(KZ)

So Jonathan told him, “I tasted a little honey(LA) with the end of my staff. And now I must die!”

44 Saul said, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely,(LB) if you do not die, Jonathan.(LC)”

45 But the men said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die—he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the Lord lives, not a hair(LD) of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God’s help.” So the men rescued(LE) Jonathan, and he was not put to death.

46 Then Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines, and they withdrew to their own land.

47 After Saul had assumed rule over Israel, he fought against their enemies on every side: Moab,(LF) the Ammonites,(LG) Edom,(LH) the kings[v] of Zobah,(LI) and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them.[w] 48 He fought valiantly and defeated the Amalekites,(LJ) delivering Israel from the hands of those who had plundered them.

Saul’s Family

49 Saul’s sons were Jonathan, Ishvi and Malki-Shua.(LK) The name of his older daughter was Merab, and that of the younger was Michal.(LL) 50 His wife’s name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the commander of Saul’s army was Abner(LM) son of Ner, and Ner was Saul’s uncle.(LN) 51 Saul’s father Kish(LO) and Abner’s father Ner were sons of Abiel.

52 All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines, and whenever Saul saw a mighty or brave man, he took(LP) him into his service.

The Lord Rejects Saul as King

15 Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one the Lord sent to anoint(LQ) you king over his people Israel; so listen now to the message from the Lord. 2 This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites(LR) for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally(LS) destroy[x] all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”

4 So Saul summoned the men and mustered them at Telaim—two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand from Judah. 5 Saul went to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the ravine. 6 Then he said to the Kenites,(LT) “Go away, leave the Amalekites so that I do not destroy you along with them; for you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites.

7 Then Saul attacked the Amalekites(LU) all the way from Havilah to Shur,(LV) near the eastern border of Egypt. 8 He took Agag(LW) king of the Amalekites alive,(LX) and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword. 9 But Saul and the army spared(LY) Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves[y] and lambs—everything that was good. These they were unwilling to destroy completely, but everything that was despised and weak they totally destroyed.

10 Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel: 11 “I regret(LZ) that I have made Saul king, because he has turned(MA) away from me and has not carried out my instructions.”(MB) Samuel was angry,(MC) and he cried out to the Lord all that night.

12 Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to Carmel.(MD) There he has set up a monument(ME) in his own honor and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal.”

13 When Samuel reached him, Saul said, “The Lord bless you! I have carried out the Lord’s instructions.”

14 But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?”

15 Saul answered, “The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God, but we totally destroyed the rest.”

16 “Enough!” Samuel said to Saul. “Let me tell you what the Lord said to me last night.”

“Tell me,” Saul replied.

17 Samuel said, “Although you were once small(MF) in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel. 18 And he sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; wage war against them until you have wiped them out.’ 19 Why did you not obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder(MG) and do evil in the eyes of the Lord?”

20 “But I did obey(MH) the Lord,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the Lord assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king. 21 The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the Lord your God at Gilgal.”

22 But Samuel replied:

“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
    as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice,(MI)
    and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination,(MJ)
    and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected(MK) the word of the Lord,
    he has rejected you as king.”

24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned.(ML) I violated(MM) the Lord’s command and your instructions. I was afraid(MN) of the men and so I gave in to them. 25 Now I beg you, forgive(MO) my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord.”

26 But Samuel said to him, “I will not go back with you. You have rejected(MP) the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel!”

27 As Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe,(MQ) and it tore.(MR) 28 Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn(MS) the kingdom(MT) of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you.(MU) 29 He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie(MV) or change(MW) his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind.”

30 Saul replied, “I have sinned.(MX) But please honor(MY) me before the elders of my people and before Israel; come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord your God.” 31 So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord.

32 Then Samuel said, “Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites.”

Agag came to him in chains.[z] And he thought, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”

33 But Samuel said,

“As your sword has made women childless,
    so will your mother be childless among women.”(MZ)

And Samuel put Agag to death before the Lord at Gilgal.

34 Then Samuel left for Ramah,(NA) but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah(NB) of Saul. 35 Until the day Samuel(NC) died, he did not go to see Saul again, though Samuel mourned(ND) for him. And the Lord regretted(NE) that he had made Saul king over Israel.

8 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.

3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,

5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.

2 And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.

3 And the asses of Kish Saul's father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.

4 And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.

5 And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses, and take thought for us.

6 And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go.

7 Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?

8 And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.

9 (Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to enquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)

10 Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.

11 And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?

12 And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:

13 As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.

14 And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.

15 Now the Lord had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,

16 To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.

17 And when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.

18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer's house is.

19 And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.

20 And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father's house?

21 And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?

22 And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which were about thirty persons.

23 And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee.

24 And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.

25 And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.

26 And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.

27 And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on), but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.

10 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

2 When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?

3 Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:

4 And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.

5 After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:

6 And the Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

7 And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.

8 And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and shew thee what thou shalt do.

10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

11 And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

12 And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?

13 And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.

14 And Saul's uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.

15 And Saul's uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you.

16 And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.

17 And Samuel called the people together unto the Lord to Mizpeh;

18 And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you:

19 And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes, and by your thousands.

20 And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.

21 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.

22 Therefore they enquired of the Lord further, if the man should yet come thither. And the Lord answered, Behold he hath hid himself among the stuff.

23 And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.

24 And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the Lord hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.

25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

26 And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.

27 But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought no presents. But he held his peace.

11 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

4 Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

5 And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

9 And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

11 And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

12 And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

13 And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the Lord hath wrought salvation in Israel.

14 Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

15 And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

12 And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you.

2 And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day.

3 Behold, here I am: witness against me before the Lord, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.

4 And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man's hand.

5 And he said unto them, The Lord is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.

6 And Samuel said unto the people, It is the Lord that advanced Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.

7 Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the Lord of all the righteous acts of the Lord, which he did to you and to your fathers.

8 When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto the Lord, then the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place.

9 And when they forgat the Lord their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.

10 And they cried unto the Lord, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.

11 And the Lord sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe.

12 And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the Lord your God was your king.

13 Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the Lord hath set a king over you.

14 If ye will fear the Lord, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the Lord your God:

15 But if ye will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then shall the hand of the Lord be against you, as it was against your fathers.

16 Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the Lord will do before your eyes.

17 Is it not wheat harvest to day? I will call unto the Lord, and he shall send thunder and rain; that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of the Lord, in asking you a king.

18 So Samuel called unto the Lord; and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.

19 And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the Lord thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.

20 And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart;

21 And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.

22 For the Lord will not forsake his people for his great name's sake: because it hath pleased the Lord to make you his people.

23 Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:

24 Only fear the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.

25 But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king.

13 Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,

2 Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

3 And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.

4 And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.

5 And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven.

6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.

7 And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

8 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.

9 And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.

10 And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.

11 And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;

12 Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the Lord: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.

13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the Lord thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the Lord have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the Lord hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the Lord commanded thee.

15 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.

16 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

17 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:

18 And another company turned the way to Bethhoron: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

19 Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:

20 But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.

21 Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.

22 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.

23 And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.

14 Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.

2 And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people that were with him were about six hundred men;

3 And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the Lord's priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.

4 And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines' garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.

5 The forefront of the one was situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah.

6 And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the Lord will work for us: for there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few.

7 And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.

8 Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.

9 If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.

10 But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the Lord hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.

11 And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.

12 And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the Lord hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.

13 And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armourbearer slew after him.

14 And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.

15 And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling.

16 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.

17 Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.

18 And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.

19 And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.

20 And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.

21 Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.

22 Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

23 So the Lord saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Bethaven.

24 And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.

25 And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground.

26 And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.

27 But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.

28 Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint.

29 Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

30 How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?

31 And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were very faint.

32 And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.

33 Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the Lord, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.

34 And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the Lord in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.

35 And Saul built an altar unto the Lord: the same was the first altar that he built unto the Lord.

36 And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.

37 And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.

38 And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.

39 For, as the Lord liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.

40 Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.

41 Therefore Saul said unto the Lord God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.

42 And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.

43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.

44 And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.

45 And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the Lord liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.

46 Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.

47 So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them.

48 And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.

49 Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchishua: and the names of his two daughters were these; the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal:

50 And the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz: and the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul's uncle.

51 And Kish was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

52 And there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.

15 Samuel also said unto Saul, The Lord sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the Lord.

2 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.

3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

4 And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.

6 And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

7 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt.

8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

10 Then came the word of the Lord unto Samuel, saying,

11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the Lord all night.

12 And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.

13 And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the Lord: I have performed the commandment of the Lord.

14 And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?

15 And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

16 Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the Lord hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.

17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the Lord anointed thee king over Israel?

18 And the Lord sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.

19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the Lord, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the Lord?

20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and have gone the way which the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in Gilgal.

22 And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord.

26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.

27 And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.

28 And Samuel said unto him, The Lord hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.

29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.

30 Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord thy God.

31 So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the Lord.

32 Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.

33 And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.

34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the Lord repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
