乃缦患大麻风求治于以利沙

亚兰王的元帅乃缦在他主人面前为尊为大,因耶和华曾借他使亚兰人得胜。他又是大能的勇士,只是长了大麻风。 先前亚兰人成群地出去,从以色列国掳了一个小女子,这女子就服侍乃缦的妻。 她对主母说:“巴不得我主人去见撒马利亚的先知,必能治好他的大麻风。” 乃缦进去,告诉他主人说:“以色列国的女子如此如此说。” 亚兰王说:“你可以去,我也达信于以色列王。”于是乃缦带银子十他连得、金子六千舍客勒、衣裳十套,就去了。 且带信给以色列王,信上说:“我打发臣仆乃缦去见你,你接到这信,就要治好他的大麻风。” 以色列王看了信就撕裂衣服,说:“我岂是神,能使人死使人活呢?这人竟打发人来,叫我治好他的大麻风!你们看一看,这人何以寻隙攻击我呢?”

浴于约旦河得洁

神人以利沙听见以色列王撕裂衣服,就打发人去见王,说:“你为什么撕了衣服呢?可使那人到我这里来,他就知道以色列中有先知了。” 于是乃缦带着车马到了以利沙的家,站在门前。 10 以利沙打发一个使者对乃缦说:“你去在约旦河中沐浴七回,你的肉就必复原,而得洁净。” 11 乃缦却发怒走了,说:“我想他必定出来见我,站着求告耶和华他神的名,在患处以上摇手,治好这大麻风。 12 大马士革的河亚罢拿法珥法岂不比以色列的一切水更好吗?我在那里沐浴不得洁净吗?”于是气愤愤地转身去了。 13 他的仆人进前来,对他说:“我父啊,先知若吩咐你做一件大事,你岂不做吗?何况说你去沐浴而得洁净呢?” 14 于是乃缦下去,照着神人的话,在约旦河里沐浴七回。他的肉复原,好像小孩子的肉,他就洁净了。

乃缦馈物以利沙不受

15 乃缦带着一切跟随他的人回到神人那里,站在他面前,说:“如今我知道,除了以色列之外,普天下没有神。现在求你收点仆人的礼物。” 16 以利沙说:“我指着所侍奉永生的耶和华起誓,我必不受。”乃缦再三地求他,他却不受。 17 乃缦说:“你若不肯受,请将两骡子驮的土赐给仆人。从今以后,仆人必不再将燔祭或平安祭献于别神,只献给耶和华。 18 唯有一件事,愿耶和华饶恕你仆人:我主人进临门庙叩拜的时候,我用手搀他在临门庙,我也屈身。我在临门庙屈身的这事,愿耶和华饶恕我!” 19 以利沙对他说:“你可以平平安安地回去。”乃缦就离开他去了,走了不远。

基哈西之贪冒

20 神人以利沙的仆人基哈西心里说:“我主人不愿从这亚兰乃缦手里受他带来的礼物,我指着永生的耶和华起誓,我必跑去追上他,向他要些。” 21 于是基哈西追赶乃缦乃缦看见有人追赶,就急忙下车迎着他,说:“都平安吗?” 22 说:“都平安。我主人打发我来说:‘刚才有两个少年人,是先知门徒,从以法莲山地来见我,请你赐他们一他连得银子、两套衣裳。’” 23 乃缦说:“请受二他连得。”再三地请受,便将二他连得银子装在两个口袋里,又将两套衣裳交给两个仆人,他们就在基哈西前头抬着走。 24 到了山冈,基哈西从他们手中接过来,放在屋里,打发他们回去。

得财致患大麻风

25 基哈西进去,站在他主人面前。以利沙问他说:“基哈西,你从哪里来?”回答说:“仆人没有往哪里去。” 26 以利沙对他说:“那人下车转回迎你的时候,我的心岂没有去呢?这岂是受银子、衣裳,买橄榄园、葡萄园、牛羊、仆婢的时候呢? 27 因此,乃缦的大麻风必沾染你和你的后裔,直到永远。”基哈西以利沙面前退出去,就长了大麻风,像雪那样白。

Елисей изцелява прокажения Нееман

(A)А Нееман, военачалникът на сирийския цар, беше човек велик и почитан пред господаря си, понеже чрез него Господ беше избавил Сирия; при това беше силен и храбър, но беше прокажен.

А сирийците бяха излезли на чети и бяха довели от Израилевата земя една девойка пленница, която слугуваше на Неемановата жена.

Тя каза на господарката си: Ако господарят ми беше при пророка, който е в Самария, той би го изцелил от проказата му!

Тогава Нееман влезе и съобщи на господаря си: Така и така каза девойката, която е от Израилевата земя.

(B)Сирийският цар отговори: Стани, иди и ще пратя писмо до Израилевия цар. И така, Нееман отиде, като взе в ръката си десет таланта сребро, шест хиляди жълтици и десет премени дрехи.

И донесе писмото на Израилевия цар, в което се казваше: Като пристигне това писмо до тебе, заедно с него пратих до тебе слугата си Нееман, за да го изцериш от проказата му.

(C)А Израилевият цар, като прочете писмото, раздра дрехите си и извика: Бог ли съм аз, за да умъртвявам и да съживявам, че праща до мене да изцеря човека от проказата му? И така, моля, разсъдете и вижте как търси повод за скарване с мен.

А Божият човек Елисей, като чу, че Израилевият цар раздрал дрехите си, прати до царя да кажат: Защо си раздрал дрехите си? Нека дойде сега при мен и ще разбере, че има пророк в Израил.

И Нееман дойде с конете и колесниците си и застана пред вратата на Елисеевата къща.

10 (D)Елисей прати до него човек да каже: Иди, окъпи се седем пъти в Йордан; и ще се обнови плътта ти и ще се очистиш.

11 А Нееман се разгневи и си отиде, като казваше: Ето, аз мислех, че той непременно ще излезе при мене, ще застане и ще призове името на своя Бог, ще положи ръката си върху мястото и така ще изцери прокажения.

12 Реките на Дамаск, Аван и Фарфар не струват ли повече от всички води на Израил? Не мога ли да се окъпя в тях и да се очистя? Затова той се обърна и си отиде много разгневен.

13 А слугите му се приближиха и му казаха: Татко наш, ако пророкът ти беше заръчал нещо голямо, не би ли го извършил? И така, колко повече, като ти казва: Окъпи се и се очисти!

14 (E)Тогава Нееман слезе и се потопи седем пъти в Йордан според думите на Божия човек; и плътта му се обнови като на малко дете и се очисти.

15 (F)Тогава той се върна при Божия човек с цялата си дружина. Дойде, застана пред него и каза: Ето, сега узнах, че няма Бог в целия свят освен в Израил; затова, моля, приеми сега подарък от слугата си.

16 (G)А Елисей отговори: Заклевам се в живота на Господа, на Когото слугувам, че не искам да приема. А той го принуждаваше да приеме, но пророкът отказа.

17 Тогава Нееман каза: Ако не, то нека се даде, моля, на слугата ти товар за две мулета от тази пръст; защото слугата ти няма вече да принася нито всеизгаряне, нито жертва на други богове освен на Господа.

18 (H)Господ да прости това на слугата ти, ако, когато господарят ми влиза в светилището на Римон, за да се поклони там, и се подпира на ръката ми, се навеждам и аз в светилището на Римон. Като се навеждам в светилището на Римон, Господ да прости това на слугата ти!

19 Елисей му каза: Иди си с мир. И така, Нееман се отдалечи на известно разстояние.

20 Но Гиезий, слугата на Божия човек Елисей, си каза: Ето, господарят ми се посвени и не взе от ръката на този сириец Нееман това, което донесе; но в името на живия Господ аз ще се завтека след него и ще взема нещо от него.

21 И така, Гиезий се завтече след Нееман. А Нееман, когато видя, че той тича след него, скочи от колесницата да го посрещне и каза: Добре ли сте всички?

22 Гиезий отвърна: Добре. Господарят ми ме прати да кажа: Ето, тъкмо сега дойдоха при мен от хълмистата земя на Ефрем двама младежи от пророческите ученици; дай им, моля, един талант сребро и дрехи за премяна.

23 Нееман каза: Благоволи да вземеш два таланта. И като го принуди, върза двата таланта сребро в две чувалчета заедно с две премени дрехи и ги натовари на двама от слугите си, които ги носеха пред него.

24 Когато стигнаха до хълма, Гиезий ги взе от ръцете им и ги скри в къщата; после отпрати хората и те си отидоха.

25 Тогава влезе и застана пред господаря си. Елисей му каза: Откъде идваш, Гиезий? А той отговори: Слугата ти не е ходил никъде.

26 Елисей му каза: Не отиде ли сърцето ми с тебе, когато човекът се върна от колесницата си, за да те посрещне? Време ли е да приемеш пари и дрехи, маслини и лозя, овце и говеда, слуги и слугини?

27 (I)Затова Неемановата проказа ще се залепи за теб и за рода ти до века. И Гиезий си тръгна от него прокажен, бял като сняг.

以利沙医治乃缦

乃缦是亚兰王的元帅,甚得亚兰王器重,因为耶和华借他使亚兰人打了许多胜仗。他是英勇的战士,只是患了麻风病。 亚兰人袭击以色列时,曾掳回一个以色列少女,这少女做了乃缦妻子的婢女。 有一天,她对主母说:“要是我主人去见撒玛利亚的那位先知就好了!他一定能治好我主人的麻风病。” 乃缦把这以色列少女的话告诉亚兰王。 亚兰王说:“你去吧。我会写信给以色列王的。”于是,乃缦带了三百四十公斤银子、七十公斤金子和十套衣服,启程前往以色列。 他带给以色列王的信上写着:“谨以此信介绍我的臣仆乃缦到你那里,你要医好他的麻风病。” 以色列王读完信后,就撕裂衣服说:“难道我是上帝吗?我能操纵人的生死吗?这人竟叫我医好一个人的麻风病!他只是想找借口攻打我。”

上帝的仆人以利沙听说以色列王撕裂了衣服,便派人去对王说:“你为什么撕裂衣服呢?让那人到我这里来,我要让他知道以色列有先知。” 乃缦带领车辆和马匹到了以利沙的家,站在门口。 10 以利沙派使者出去对乃缦说:“你到约旦河里洗七次,你的皮肤就会复原,并得到洁净。” 11 乃缦却怒冲冲地走了。他说:“我以为他一定会出来见我,为我站着求告他的上帝耶和华,用手在我的患处晃一晃,医好我的麻风病。 12 大马士革的亚波纳河和法尔法河不比以色列所有的河都好吗?难道我在那里洗就不能得到洁净吗?”于是,他怒冲冲地转身走了。 13 他的仆人上前对他说:“我父啊,先知若吩咐你做一件大事,难道你会不去做吗?何况他只是说你去洗洗就可以洁净!” 14 乃缦就去约旦河,照上帝仆人的话在河里洗了七次,便洁净了,皮肤变得像小孩子的一样。

15 乃缦率领全体随从回到上帝的仆人那里,站在他面前说:“如今我才知道,除了以色列,普天下没有上帝。请你收下仆人的礼物。” 16 以利沙说:“我凭我事奉的永活上帝起誓,我决不接受。”乃缦再三请求,他仍不肯接受。 17 乃缦说:“如果你不肯接受礼物,请你容许仆人用两头骡子驮些泥土回去。从此以后,我不再献燔祭或平安祭给其他神明,只献给耶和华。 18 但有一件事,愿耶和华饶恕仆人。我主人进入临门庙祭拜时,他会扶着我的手,这样我也得随着他弯腰。若我在临门庙里弯腰,愿耶和华饶恕我。” 19 以利沙对他说:“你安心地走吧。”

20 乃缦刚走不远,上帝仆人以利沙的仆人基哈西心想:“我主人没有收亚兰人乃缦带来的礼物就让他走了。我凭永活的耶和华起誓,我一定要追上去,向他要点东西。” 21 他便去追赶乃缦。乃缦见后面有人赶来,就下车迎接他,问他:“一切都好吗?” 22 基哈西答道:“一切都好。我主人派我来告诉你,刚才有两位年轻的先知从以法莲山区来见他,请你赐给他们三十四公斤银子和两套衣服。” 23 乃缦说:“请你拿走六十八公斤银子吧!”并再三请他接受,然后把六十八公斤银子装进两个袋子,连同两套衣服,交给他的两个仆人抬走,基哈西跟在他们后面。 24 到了山冈,基哈西接过银子和衣服,放进屋里,便让他们回去了。 25 基哈西进去侍立在以利沙面前,以利沙问他:“基哈西,你刚才去哪里了?”基哈西答道:“仆人哪里也没有去。” 26 以利沙对他说:“那人下车回头迎接你的时候,我的心不也在那里吗?现在岂是接受人家银子、衣服、橄榄园、葡萄园、牛羊和仆婢的时候? 27 因此,你和你的后代会永远沾染乃缦的麻风病。”基哈西离开以利沙时,患了麻风病,皮肤像雪一样白。

Naaman Healed of Leprosy

Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram.(A) He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy.[a](B)

Now bands of raiders(C) from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, “If only my master would see the prophet(D) who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.”

Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl from Israel had said. “By all means, go,” the king of Aram replied. “I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents[b] of silver, six thousand shekels[c] of gold and ten sets of clothing.(E) The letter that he took to the king of Israel read: “With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you so that you may cure him of his leprosy.”

As soon as the king of Israel read the letter,(F) he tore his robes and said, “Am I God?(G) Can I kill and bring back to life?(H) Why does this fellow send someone to me to be cured of his leprosy? See how he is trying to pick a quarrel(I) with me!”

When Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his robes, he sent him this message: “Why have you torn your robes? Have the man come to me and he will know that there is a prophet(J) in Israel.” So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha’s house. 10 Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, “Go, wash(K) yourself seven times(L) in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.”

11 But Naaman went away angry and said, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand(M) over the spot and cure me of my leprosy. 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters(N) of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be cleansed?” So he turned and went off in a rage.(O)

13 Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father,(P) if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” 14 So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times,(Q) as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored(R) and became clean like that of a young boy.(S)

15 Then Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God(T). He stood before him and said, “Now I know(U) that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift(V) from your servant.”

16 The prophet answered, “As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing.” And even though Naaman urged him, he refused.(W)

17 “If you will not,” said Naaman, “please let me, your servant, be given as much earth(X) as a pair of mules can carry, for your servant will never again make burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god but the Lord. 18 But may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing: When my master enters the temple of Rimmon to bow down and he is leaning(Y) on my arm and I have to bow there also—when I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the Lord forgive your servant for this.”

19 “Go in peace,”(Z) Elisha said.

After Naaman had traveled some distance, 20 Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said to himself, “My master was too easy on Naaman, this Aramean, by not accepting from him what he brought. As surely as the Lord(AA) lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”

21 So Gehazi hurried after Naaman. When Naaman saw him running toward him, he got down from the chariot to meet him. “Is everything all right?” he asked.

22 “Everything is all right,” Gehazi answered. “My master sent me to say, ‘Two young men from the company of the prophets have just come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent[d] of silver and two sets of clothing.’”(AB)

23 “By all means, take two talents,” said Naaman. He urged Gehazi to accept them, and then tied up the two talents of silver in two bags, with two sets of clothing. He gave them to two of his servants, and they carried them ahead of Gehazi. 24 When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the things from the servants and put them away in the house. He sent the men away and they left.

25 When he went in and stood before his master, Elisha asked him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?”

“Your servant didn’t go anywhere,” Gehazi answered.

26 But Elisha said to him, “Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time(AC) to take money or to accept clothes—or olive groves and vineyards, or flocks and herds, or male and female slaves?(AD) 27 Naaman’s leprosy(AE) will cling to you and to your descendants forever.” Then Gehazi(AF) went from Elisha’s presence and his skin was leprous—it had become as white as snow.(AG)

Chapter 5

Cure of Naaman.[a] There was a certain Naaman, who was the commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was an honorable man, highly esteemed by his master, because it was through him that the Lord had delivered Aram. He was a brave soldier, but he had leprosy.

Aramean raiders had gone out into the land of Israel and had taken a young girl captive who served Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, “If only my lord would present himself to the prophet who is in Samaria. He would cure him of his leprosy.”

He went to his lord and said, “This is what the young girl from the land of Israel said.”

The king of Aram said, “Go! I will send a letter to the king of Israel.”

He went on his way, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of clothing. He brought the letter to the king of Israel which said, “With this letter I am sending you my servant Naaman so that you might cure him of his leprosy.”

When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, “Am I God, with the power to kill and give life, that he sends me a man to heal him of his leprosy? Think of it, see how he is seeking a quarrel with me.”

When Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent to the king, saying, “Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come to me so that he might know that there is a prophet in Israel.”

So Naaman went with his horses and his chariot, and he stood at the door to Elisha’s house. 10 Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go, wash seven times in the Jordan, and your skin will be restored, and you will be clean.”

11 But Naaman went away angry and said, “Behold, I thought he would surely come out to me and stand and call upon the name of the Lord, his God, and wave his hand over the place and heal the leprosy. 12 Are not the Abana and the Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all of the rivers of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be made clean?”

So he turned away and left in a rage. 13 His servants approached him and spoke to him saying, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more should you do it when he said, ‘Wash and be made clean.’ ”

14 He went down and he bathed himself in the Jordan seven times as the man of God had instructed him to do. His skin became like the skin of a little child, and he was clean.

15 He and all of his attendants returned to the man of God. He came and he stood before him and said, “Behold, I now know that there is no God upon the earth except in Israel. Please accept a gift from your servant.” 16 He answered, “As the Lord lives before whom I stand, I will not accept it.” Even though he urged him to take it, he refused.[b]

17 [c]Naaman said, “If not, then let your servant be given two donkey loads of dirt, for your servant will never again offer burnt offerings or sacrifices to any other god but the Lord. 18 Only may the Lord forgive me this one thing: When my master enters the temple of Rimmon to worship there, and he leans on my hand and I also bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the Lord forgive your servant this thing.”

19 He said to him, “Go in peace.” He left and traveled a little way. 20 But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha, the man of God, said, “Behold, my master has spared Naaman the Aramean by not accepting from his hands what he brought. As the Lord lives, I will run after him and take something from him.”

21 So Gehazi followed Naaman. When Naaman saw him running after him, he got off the chariot to greet him and he said, “Is all well?” 22 He answered, “All is well. My master sent me, saying, ‘Two young men from among the sons of the prophets have now come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two changes of clothing.’ ”

23 Naaman said, “Please take two talents.” He urged it on him, and he bound up two talents of silver in two bags along with two changes of clothing. He entrusted it to two of his servants who carried it before him. 24 When he came to the tower, he took it from their hands and he placed it in the house. He then dismissed the men and they left.

25 He went in and stood before his master. Elisha said to him, “Where are you coming from, Gehazi?” He answered, “Your servant has not gone anywhere.” 26 He said to him, “Was not my spirit with you when the man got off of his chariot to meet you? Is this now the time to receive money, or clothing, or olive orchards, or vineyards, or sheep, or oxen, or menservants, or maidservants? 27 On account of this, Naaman’s leprosy will cling to you and your descendants forever.” He went out from his presence, and he was a leper, as white as snow.

  1. 2 Kings 5:1 The story is highly instructive (see Lk 4:27). The episode of the bathing has been seen as prefigurative of baptism, the waters of which cleanse from sin. Naaman was probably suffering from a simple skin disease; otherwise he would have been kept apart as a leper.
  2. 2 Kings 5:16 Given the time and place, the prophet’s disinterestedness is admirable. He anticipates the command of Jesus to the apostles that they should not take pay for their ministry (Mt 10:8). Elijah’s action stands out even more clearly in contrast to his servant, who is so greedy that he is willing even to slander his master (vv. 20-21).
  3. 2 Kings 5:17 Rimmon or Hadad-rimmon was the principal divinity of Damascus (Zec 12:11). Naaman asks for a little earth from the land of the true God in order to make for himself a sacred place in which he may pray. He thereby becomes a model for converted pagans. But he is faced with a difficult matter of conscience and he asks that he not be forbidden outward participation in the false worship that is forced upon him. The prophet leaves the convert in his state of good faith, without expressly giving his approval.
