இயேசு சோதிக்கப்படுதல்
(மத்தேயு 4:1-11; மாற்கு 1:12-13)
4 யோர்தான் நதியில் இருந்து இயேசு திரும்பினார். அவர் பரிசுத்த ஆவியால் நிரப்பப்பட்டிருந்தார். ஆவியானவர் இயேசுவை வனாந்தரத்திற்குச் செல்ல ஏவினார். 2 அங்கு பிசாசு இயேசுவை நாற்பது நாட்கள் சோதனைக்கு உட்படுத்தினான். அந்நாட்களில் இயேசு எதையும் உண்ணவில்லை. சோதனைக் காலமான அந்த நாட்கள் கழிந்த பின்னர், இயேசுவுக்கு மிகுந்த பசி உண்டாயிற்று.
3 பிசாசு இயேசுவை நோக்கி, “நீர் தேவனுடைய குமாரனானால், இந்தக் கல்லுகளை அப்பங்களாகும்படி சொல்லும்” என்றான்.
4 அதற்கு இயேசு, “வேதவாக்கியங்களில் இவ்வாறு எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது: “‘மக்களை உயிரோடு பாதுகாப்பது அப்பம் மட்டுமல்ல,’” என்றார்.(A)
5 அப்போது பிசாசு அவரை உயரமான ஓர் இடத்துக்கு அழைத்துக்கொண்டு போய் ஒரு நொடிக்குள் உலகின் எல்லா இராஜ்யங்களையும் காண்பித்தான். 6 பிசாசு இயேசுவை நோக்கி, “உனக்கு இந்த எல்லா இராஜ்யங்களையும், அதிகாரங்களையும், அவற்றின் மகிமையையும் கொடுப்பேன். அவை எல்லாம் எனக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. நான் கொடுக்க விரும்புகிறவனுக்கு அவற்றைக் கொடுக்கமுடியும். 7 நீர் என்னை வணங்கினால் இவை அனைத்தையும் உமக்குக் கொடுப்பேன்” என்று கூறினான்.
8 பதிலாக இயேசு, “வேதவாக்கியங்களில் இவ்வாறு எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது, “‘உங்கள் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தரை மட்டும் வழிபடுங்கள்; அவருக்கு மட்டுமே சேவை செய்யுங்கள்.’”(B) என்றார்.
9 பின் பிசாசு இயேசுவை எருசலேமுக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றான். தேவாலயத்தின் உயர்ந்த இடத்தில் இயேசுவை நிற்க வைத்தான். அவன் இயேசுவிடம், “நீர் தேவனுடைய குமாரனானால் கீழே குதியும்,
10 “‘தேவன் தம் தூதர்களுக்கு உம்மைக் காக்கும்படியாகக் கட்டளையிடுவார்.(C)
11 உமது பாதங்கள் பாறையில் இடித்துவிடாதபடிக்கு அவர்கள்
தம் கைகளில் உம்மைத் தாங்கிக்கொள்வார்கள்’(D)
என்று வேதவாக்கியங்களில் இவ்வாறு எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது” என்றான்.
12 அவனுக்கு இயேசு, “‘உன் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தரைச் சோதிக்காதே’(E)
என்றும் கூட வேதவாக்கியங்கள் சொல்கிறதே” என்று பதில் சொன்னார்.
13 பிசாசு இயேசுவை எல்லா வகையிலும் சோதித்து முடித்தான். இன்னும் தகுந்த காலம் வரும் வரைக்கும் காத்திருக்க முடிவு செய்து அவரிடமிருந்து விலகிச் சென்றுவிட்டான்.
இயேசுவின் போதனை
(மத்தேயு 4:12-17; மாற்கு 1:14-15)
14 பரிசுத்த ஆவியானவரின் வல்லமையோடு இயேசு கலிலேயாவுக்குத் திரும்பினார். இயேசுவைப் பற்றிய செய்திகள் கலிலேயா தேசத்தைச் சுற்றியுள்ள எல்லா பகுதிகளிலும் பரவின. 15 இயேசு யூதர்களின் ஜெப ஆலயங்களில் போதிக்க ஆரம்பித்தார். எல்லா மக்களும் அவரைப் புகழ்ந்தனர்.
தன் சொந்த ஊரில் இயேசு
(மத்தேயு 13:53-58; மாற்கு 6:1-6)
16 தான் வளர்ந்த இடமாகிய நாசரேத்திற்கு இயேசு பயணம் செய்தார். யூதர்களின் ஓய்வு நாளில் அவர் வழக்கம் போல் ஜெப ஆலயத்திற்குச் சென்று வாசிப்பதற்காக எழுந்து நின்றார். 17 ஏசாயா தீர்க்கதரிசியின் புத்தகம் அவருக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்டது. இயேசு புத்தகத்தைத் திறந்து கீழ்வரும் பகுதி எழுதப்பட்டிருப்பதைக் கண்டார்:
18 “தேவனுடைய ஆவி என்னிலுள்ளது.
ஏதுமற்ற மக்களுக்கு நற்செய்தியைப் போதிப்பதற்கு தேவன் என்னைத் தேர்ந்தார்.
கைதிகள் விடுதலை பெறவும்
குருடர்கள் மீண்டும் பார்வை பெறவும் அம்மக்களுக்குப் போதிக்கும்படியாக தேவன் என்னை அனுப்பினார்.
தங்கள் துன்பத்தினின்று பலவீனர்கள் விடுதலை பெறும்பொருட்டு தேவன் என்னை அனுப்பினார்.
19 மக்களுக்கு தேவன் இரக்கம் காட்டும் காலத்தை அறிவிக்கும்படியாக தேவன் என்னை அனுப்பினார்”(F)
என்பதை இயேசு வாசித்துவிட்டு புத்தகத்தை மூடினார்.
20 அவர் புத்தகத்தை திருப்பித் தந்துவிட்டு உட்கார்ந்தார். ஜெப ஆலயத்திலிருந்த ஒவ்வொருவரும் இயேசுவைக் கூர்ந்து நோக்கினர். 21 அவர்களிடம் இயேசு பேச ஆரம்பித்தார். அவர், “நான் வாசித்த இச்சொற்களை இப்போது நீங்கள் கேட்கையில், அச்சொற்கள் உண்மையாயின!” என்றார்.
22 எல்லா மக்களும் இயேசுவைக் குறித்து நல்லபடியாகக் கூறினர். இயேசு பேசிய அழகான வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு அவர்கள் வியந்தனர். மக்கள், “அவர் எவ்வாறு இப்படிப் பேச முடியும்? அவர் யோசேப்பின் குமாரன் அல்லவா?” என்றனர்.
23 அவர்களை நோக்கி, இயேசு, “‘மருத்துவரே, முதலில் உன்னை நீயே குணப்படுத்திக்கொள்’ என்னும் பழமொழியை நீங்கள் எனக்குக் கூறப் போகிறீர்கள் என்பது எனக்குத் தெரியும். ‘நீங்கள் கப்பர்நகூமில் நிகழ்த்திய காரியங்களைக் குறித்துக் கேள்விப்பட்டு இருக்கிறோம். உங்கள் சொந்த நகரமாகிய இவ்விடத்திலும் அதையே செய்யுங்கள்’ என்று சொல்ல விரும்புகிறீர்கள்” என்றார். 24 மேலும் இயேசு, “நான் உங்களுக்கு உண்மையைக் கூறுகிறேன். ஒரு தீர்க்கதரிசியை அவனது சொந்த நகரத்தார் ஏற்றுக்கொள்வதில்லை.
25 “நான் சொல்வது உண்மை. எலியாவின் காலத்தில் மூன்றரை ஆண்டுகளாக இஸ்ரவேலில் மழை பொழியவில்லை. நாடு முழுவதிலும் உணவு எங்கும் கிடைக்கவில்லை. அக்காலத்தில் இஸ்ரவேலில் விதவைகள் பலர் வாழ்ந்தனர். 26 ஆனால் இஸ்ரவேலில் உள்ள எந்த விதவையிடத்திலும் எலியா அனுப்பப்படவில்லை. சீதோனில் உள்ள நகரமாகிய சாரிபாத்தில் உள்ள விதவையிடத்துக்கே அவன் அனுப்பப்பட்டான்.
27 “எலிசா என்னும் தீர்க்கதரிசியின் காலத்தில் குஷ்டரோகிகள் பலர் இருந்தனர். அவர்களில் ஒருவரும் குணமாக்கப்படவில்லை. நாகமான் மட்டுமே குணமடைந்தான். அவன் சீரியா தேசத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவன். இஸ்ரவேல் தேசத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவன் அல்லன்” என்றார்.
28 ஜெப ஆலயத்தில் உள்ள அனைவரும் இவ்வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டனர். அவர்கள் மிகமிகக் கோபம் அடைந்தனர். 29 அம்மக்கள் எழுந்து இயேசுவை நகரத்தில் இருந்து வெளியேறும்படியாகக் கட்டாயப்படுத்தினர். அவர்கள் நகரம் ஒரு மலையின்மேல் நிர்மாணிக்கப்பட்டு இருந்தது. அவர்கள் இயேசுவை மலையின் விளிம்புக்குக் கொண்டு வந்தனர். விளிம்பிலிருந்து அவரைத் தள்ளிவிட அவர்கள் முனைந்தார்கள். 30 ஆனால் இயேசு அவர்களுக்கு நடுவே நடந்து, அங்கிருந்து சென்றுவிட்டார்.
அசுத்த ஆவியிலிருந்து விடுதலை
(மாற்கு 1:21-28)
31 கலிலேயாவில் உள்ள பட்டணமாகிய கப்பர்நகூமுக்கு இயேசு சென்றார். ஓய்வு நாளில் இயேசு மக்களுக்குப் போதித்தார். 32 அவரது போதனைகளைக் கேட்டு மக்கள் வியந்தார்கள். ஏனெனில் அவர் மிகுந்த அதிகாரத்துடன் பேசினார்.
33 பிசாசினால் அசுத்த ஆவி பிடித்த ஒரு மனிதன் ஜெப ஆலயத்தில் இருந்தான். அந்த மனிதன் உரத்த குரலில், 34 “நசரேயனாகிய இயேசுவே! எங்களிடம் என்ன விரும்புகிறீர்? நீர் யார் என்பதை நான் அறிவேன். நீர் தேவனுடைய பரிசுத்தமானவர்” என்றான். 35 அசுத்த ஆவியைப் பேசாமல் இருக்கும்படி எச்சரித்தார் இயேசு. “அமைதியாக இருப்பாயாக! இம்மனிதனிலிருந்து வெளியே வா!” என்றார் இயேசு. எல்லாருக்கும் முன்பாக அசுத்த ஆவி அம்மனிதனைத் தரையில் தூக்கி எறிந்தது. பின்பு அசுத்த ஆவி காயப்படுத்தாமல் அம்மனிதனை விட்டு விலகியது.
36 மக்கள் அதைக் கண்டு அதிசயப்பட்டனர். அவர்கள் ஒருவருக்கொருவர், “இதன் பொருள் என்ன? அதிகாரத்தோடும் வல்லமையோடும் அவர் அசுத்த ஆவிகளுக்குக் கட்டளை இடுகிறார். அவை வெளியேறுகின்றன” என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டனர். 37 அந்தப் பகுதியில் உள்ள எல்லா இடங்களிலும் இயேசுவைப்பற்றிய செய்தி பரவியது.
சீமோனின் மாமி குணமடைதல்
(மத்தேயு 8:14-17; மாற்கு 1:29-34)
38 இயேசு ஜெப ஆலயத்தில் இருந்து சென்றார். அவர் சீமோனின்[a] வீட்டிற்குச் சென்றார். சீமோனின் மாமியார் மிகவும் உடல் நலமின்றி இருந்தாள். அவளுக்கு கடும் காய்ச்சலாய் இருந்தது. அவளுக்கு உதவி செய்யும் பொருட்டு எதையேனும் செய்யும்படியாக மக்கள் இயேசுவை வேண்டினர். 39 இயேசு அவளருகே சென்று நின்று, அவள் நோயைக் குணமாகும்படியாய் கட்டளையிட்டார். நோய் அவளை விட்டு நீங்கியது. அவள் எழுந்து அவர்களுக்குப் பணிவிடை புரிய ஆரம்பித்தாள்.
பலரையும் குணமாக்குதல்
40 கதிரவன் மறையும் சமயத்தில் மக்கள் தம் நோயுற்ற நண்பர்களை இயேசுவிடம் அழைத்து வந்தனர். அவர்கள் வெவ்வேறு வகை நோய்களால் துன்புற்றனர். ஒவ்வொரு நோயுற்ற மனிதனையும் அவரது கைகளால் தொட்டு இயேசு குணமாக்கினார். 41 பிசாசின் அசுத்த ஆவிகள் பலரிடமிருந்து வெளியேறின. அவை “நீர் தேவனுடைய குமாரன்” எனக் கூக்குரலிட்டன. ஆனால் அவை பேசாமல் இருக்கும்படியாக அந்த ஆவிகளை இயேசு வன்மையாகக் கண்டித்தார். இயேசுவே கிறிஸ்து என்று அவை அறிந்திருந்தன.
பிற நகரங்களுக்கு இயேசு செல்லுதல்
(மாற்கு 1:35-39)
42 தான் தனித்திருக்கும் பொருட்டு மறு நாள் இயேசு ஓர் இடத்திற்குச் சென்றார். மக்கள் இயேசுவின் வருகைக்காகப் பார்த்திருந்தார்கள். கடைசியில் அவர் இருந்த இடத்தைக் கண்டார்கள். மக்கள் இயேசுவைக் கண்டபோது அவர் போகாமல் இருக்கும்படியாகத் தடுக்க முற்பட்டனர். 43 ஆனால் இயேசு அவர்களை நோக்கி, “தேவனுடைய இராஜ்யத்தைப்பற்றிய நற்செய்தியை நான் வேறு நகரங்களிலும் சொல்ல வேண்டும். அதற்காகவே நான் அனுப்பப்பட்டுள்ளேன்” என்றார்.
44 பின்னர் யூதேயாவில் உள்ள ஜெப ஆலயங்களில் இயேசு போதித்தார்.

The Temptation of Jesus
4 (A)And Jesus, (B)full of the Holy Spirit, (C)returned from the Jordan and was led (D)by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for (E)forty days, (F)being tempted by the devil. (G)And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, (H)he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are (I)the Son of God, command (J)this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, (K)“It is written, (L)‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” 5 (M)And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6 and said to him, “To you (N)I will give all this authority and their glory, (O)for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 And Jesus answered him, (P)“It is written,
9 (S)And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are (T)the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,

Jesus Begins His Ministry
14 (Z)And Jesus returned (AA)in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and (AB)a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15 And (AC)he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
16 (AD)And he came to (AE)Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And (AF)as was his custom, (AG)he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up (AH)to read. 17 And (AI)the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
18 (AJ)“The Spirit of the Lord (AK)is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to (AL)proclaim good news to the poor.
(AM)He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and (AN)recovering of sight to the blind,
(AO)to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 (AP)to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”
20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and (AQ)sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were (AR)fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today (AS)this Scripture (AT)has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at (AU)the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, (AV)“Is not this (AW)Joseph's son?” 23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, (AX)‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did (AY)at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, (AZ)no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when (BA)the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them (BB)but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And (BC)there were many lepers[a] in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, (BD)but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and (BE)drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But (BF)passing through their midst, he went away.
Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Demon
31 (BG)And he (BH)went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And (BI)he was teaching them (BJ)on the Sabbath, 32 and (BK)they were astonished at his teaching, (BL)for his word possessed authority. 33 And (BM)in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha![b] (BN)What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? (BO)I know who you are—(BP)the Holy One of God.” 35 But Jesus (BQ)rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36 And (BR)they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? (BS)For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 And (BT)reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
Jesus Heals Many
38 (BU)And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon's house. Now (BV)Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her and (BW)rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.
40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and (BX)he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 (BY)And demons also came out of many, (BZ)crying, “You are (CA)the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and (CB)would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was (CC)the Christ.
Jesus Preaches in Synagogues
42 (CD)And when it was day, he departed and went (CE)into a desolate place. And (CF)the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, 43 but he said to them, (CG)“I must (CH)preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” 44 And he was preaching (CI)in the synagogues of Judea.[c]

A tentação de Jesus(A)
4 E Jesus, cheio do Espírito Santo, voltou do Jordão e foi levado pelo Espírito ao deserto. 2 E quarenta dias foi tentado pelo diabo, e, naqueles dias, não comeu coisa alguma, e, terminados eles, teve fome. 3 E disse-lhe o diabo: Se tu és o Filho de Deus, dize a esta pedra que se transforme em pão. 4 E Jesus lhe respondeu, dizendo: Escrito está que nem só de pão viverá o homem, mas de toda palavra de Deus. 5 E o diabo, levando-o a um alto monte, mostrou-lhe, num momento de tempo, todos os reinos do mundo. 6 E disse-lhe o diabo: Dar-te-ei a ti todo este poder e a sua glória, porque a mim me foi entregue, e dou-o a quem quero. 7 Portanto, se tu me adorares, tudo será teu. 8 E Jesus, respondendo, disse-lhe: Vai-te, Satanás, porque está escrito: Adorarás o Senhor, teu Deus, e só a ele servirás. 9 Levou-o também a Jerusalém, e pô-lo sobre o pináculo do templo, e disse-lhe: Se tu és o Filho de Deus, lança-te daqui abaixo, 10 porque está escrito: Mandará aos seus anjos, acerca de ti, que te guardem 11 e que te sustenham nas mãos, para que nunca tropeces com o teu pé em alguma pedra. 12 E Jesus, respondendo, disse-lhe: Dito está: Não tentarás ao Senhor, teu Deus. 13 E, acabando o diabo toda a tentação, ausentou-se dele por algum tempo.

14 Então, pela virtude do Espírito, voltou Jesus para a Galileia, e a sua fama correu por todas as terras em derredor. 15 E ensinava nas suas sinagogas e por todos era louvado.
16 E, chegando a Nazaré, onde fora criado, entrou num dia de sábado, segundo o seu costume, na sinagoga e levantou-se para ler. 17 E foi-lhe dado o livro do profeta Isaías; e, quando abriu o livro, achou o lugar em que estava escrito: 18 O Espírito do Senhor é sobre mim, pois que me ungiu para evangelizar os pobres, enviou-me a curar os quebrantados do coração, 19 a apregoar liberdade aos cativos, a dar vista aos cegos, a pôr em liberdade os oprimidos, a anunciar o ano aceitável do Senhor. 20 E, cerrando o livro e tornando a dá-lo ao ministro, assentou-se; e os olhos de todos na sinagoga estavam fitos nele. 21 Então, começou a dizer-lhes: Hoje se cumpriu esta Escritura em vossos ouvidos. 22 E todos lhe davam testemunho, e se maravilhavam das palavras de graça que saíam da sua boca, e diziam: Não é este o filho de José? 23 E ele lhes disse: Sem dúvida, me direis este provérbio: Médico, cura-te a ti mesmo; faze também aqui na tua pátria tudo o que ouvimos ter sido feito em Cafarnaum. 24 E disse: Em verdade vos digo que nenhum profeta é bem-recebido na sua pátria. 25 Em verdade vos digo que muitas viúvas existiam em Israel nos dias de Elias, quando o céu se cerrou por três anos e seis meses, de sorte que em toda a terra houve grande fome; 26 e a nenhuma delas foi enviado Elias, senão a Sarepta de Sidom, a uma mulher viúva. 27 E muitos leprosos havia em Israel no tempo do profeta Eliseu, e nenhum deles foi purificado, senão Naamã, o siro. 28 E todos, na sinagoga, ouvindo essas coisas, se encheram de ira. 29 E, levantando-se, o expulsaram da cidade e o levaram até ao cume do monte em que a cidade deles estava edificada, para dali o precipitarem. 30 Ele, porém, passando pelo meio deles, retirou-se.
A cura de um endemoninhado em Cafarnaum(C)
31 E desceu a Cafarnaum, cidade da Galileia, e os ensinava nos sábados. 32 E admiravam-se da sua doutrina, porque a sua palavra era com autoridade. 33 E estava na sinagoga um homem que tinha um espírito de um demônio imundo, e este exclamou em alta voz, 34 dizendo: Ah! Que temos nós contigo, Jesus Nazareno? Vieste a destruir-nos? Bem sei quem és: o Santo de Deus. 35 E Jesus o repreendeu, dizendo: Cala-te e sai dele. E o demônio, lançando-o por terra no meio do povo, saiu dele, sem lhe fazer mal. 36 E veio espanto sobre todos, e falavam uns e outros, dizendo: Que palavra é esta, que até aos espíritos imundos manda com autoridade e poder, e eles saem?

38 Ora, levantando-se Jesus da sinagoga, entrou em casa de Simão; e a sogra de Simão estava enferma com muita febre; e rogaram-lhe por ela. 39 E, inclinando-se para ela, repreendeu a febre, e esta a deixou. E ela, levantando-se logo, servia-os.
40 E, ao pôr do sol, todos os que tinham enfermos de várias doenças lhos traziam; e, impondo as mãos sobre cada um deles, os curava. 41 E também de muitos saíam demônios, clamando e dizendo: Tu és o Cristo, o Filho de Deus. E ele, repreendendo-os, não os deixava falar, pois sabiam que ele era o Cristo.
42 E, sendo já dia, saiu e foi para um lugar deserto; e a multidão o procurava e chegou junto dele; e o detinham, para que não se ausentasse deles. 43 Ele, porém, lhes disse: Também é necessário que eu anuncie a outras cidades o evangelho do Reino de Deus, porque para isso fui enviado. 44 E pregava nas sinagogas da Galileia.

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(A)
4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,(B) left the Jordan(C) and was led by the Spirit(D) into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days(E) he was tempted[a] by the devil.(F) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,(G) tell this stone to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’[b]”(H)
5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.(I) 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,(J) and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[c]”(K)
9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[d]”(L)
12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[e]”(M)
13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,(N) he left him(O) until an opportune time.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
14 Jesus returned to Galilee(P) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.(Q) 15 He was teaching in their synagogues,(R) and everyone praised him.
16 He went to Nazareth,(S) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,(T) as was his custom. He stood up to read,(U) 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,(V)
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news(W) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[f](X)
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.(Y) The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled(Z) in your hearing.”
22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.(AA)
23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown(AB) what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”(AC)
24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.(AD) 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.(AE) 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.(AF) 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy[g] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”(AG)
28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town,(AH) and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.(AI)
Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(AJ)
31 Then he went down to Capernaum,(AK) a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching,(AL) because his words had authority.(AM)
33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us,(AN) Jesus of Nazareth?(AO) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are(AP)—the Holy One of God!”(AQ)
35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.(AR) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
36 All the people were amazed(AS) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority(AT) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.(AU)
Jesus Heals Many(AV)(AW)
38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked(AX) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one,(AY) he healed them.(AZ) 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”(BA) But he rebuked(BB) them and would not allow them to speak,(BC) because they knew he was the Messiah.
42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God(BD) to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.(BE)
