6 (A)Когато чуха Санавалат, Товия и Гешем, арабец, и другите наши неприятели, че аз иззидах стената, и повреда на нея не остана – до това време обаче не бях поставил още врата на портите, –
2 тогава Санавалат и Гешем пратиха да ми кажат: дойди, и ще се срещнем в едно от селата в равнината Оно. Те крояха да ми сторят зло.
3 Но аз проводих пратеници да им кажат: зает съм с голяма работа, не мога да сляза; работата ще спре, ако я оставя и сляза при вас.
4 Четири пъти пращаха при мене все с такава покана, и аз им отговарях същото.
5 Тогава Санавалат прати при мене, за пети път, слугата си с отворено писмо в ръката му.
6 В него беше писано: мълва се носи между народите, и Гешем казва, че уж ти и иудеите сте намислили да се отцепите, поради което и зидаш стената и искаш да им бъдеш цар, според същата мълва;
7 поставил си и пророци да разгласяват за тебе в Иерусалим и да казват: цар иудейски! А такива думи ще дойдат до царя. Затова дойди, и ще се посъветваме заедно.
8 Но аз пратих да му кажат: нищо такова не е имало, за каквото говориш; сам си го измислил с ума си.
9 Защото те всички ни плашеха, думайки: ще им клепнат ръцете от тая работа, и тя няма да се свърши; но аз още повече укрепих ръцете си.
10 Отидох в къщата на Шемая, син на Делая, син Мехетавелов, и той се заключи и каза: да идем в Божия дом, вътре в храма, и да заключим подире си храмовите врата, защото ще дойдат да те убият, ще дойдат да те убият нощем.
11 (B)Но аз отговорих: бива ли да бяга такъв човек като мене? Бива ли такъв като мене да влезе в храма, за да остане жив? Не отивам.
12 Аз знаех, че не го бе пратил Бог, макар че ми говореше пророчески, – но че Товия и Санавалат го бяха подкупили.
13 Той беше подкупен, за да ме уплаши, да сторя тъй и да съгреша, та да имат за мене лошо мнение и да ме преследват за това с укори.
14 Помни, Боже мой, Товия и Санавалата според тези им дела, а също и пророчица Ноадия и другите пророци, които искаха да ме уплашат!
15 Стената биде свършена в двайсет и петия ден на месец елул, за петдесет и два дена.
16 (C)Като чуха за това всички наши неприятели, и видяха това всички околни нам народи, много се обезсърчиха и познаха, че тая работа е извършена от нашия Бог.
17 Освен това, в ония дни по-видните иудеи писаха много писма и ги пращаха до Товия, а Товиевите писма отиваха при тях.
18 Защото мнозина в Иудея бяха в клетвен съюз с него, понеже той беше зет на Шехания, син Арахов, а син му Иоханан беше женен за дъщерята на Мешулама, син Верехиев.
19 Те говореха пред мене дори и за неговата доброта, а моите думи се донасяха нему. Товия ми пращаше писма, за да ме уплаши.

2 Санавалат и Гисам пратиха до мене да кажат: Дойди, нека се срещнем в едно от селата на Оновото поле. Но те възнамеряваха да ми сторят зло.
3 И пратих им човеци да кажат: защо да се спира работата като я оставя и сляза при вас?
4 И пращаха до мене четири пъти по същия начин: но аз им отговарях все така.
5 Тогава за пети път Санавалат прати слугата си до мене по същия начин с отворено писмо в ръката му,
6 в което бе писано: Слух се носи между народите, пък и Гисам казва, че ти и юдеите мислите да се подигнете, за която причина ти и градиш стената; и, според тия думи, ти искаш да им станеш цар.
7 Назначил си още и пророци да разгласяват за тебе в Ерусалим, като казват: Цар има в Юда. И сега ще се извести на царя според тия думи. Дойди сега, прочее, и нека се съветваме заедно.
8 Тогава пратих до него човеци да кажат: Няма такова нещо каквото ти казваш; но ти ги измислюваш от себе си.
9 Защото те всички искаха да ни плашат, казвайки: Ръцете им ще ослабнат от работата, та няма да се свърши. А сега, о Боже, подкрепи Ти ръцете ми.
10 Тогава аз отидох в къщата на Самаия син на Делаия, Метавеиловия син, който бе затворен; и той ми каза: Нека се срещнем в Божия дом, всред храма, и нека затворим вратите на храма; защото тия идат да те убият, да! тая нощ ще дойдат да те убият.
11 Но аз казах: Човек като мене бива ли да бяга? и кой човек като мене би влязъл в храма за да избави живота си? Не ща да вляза.
12 И познах, че, ето, Бог не бе го пратил; но той от себе си произнесе това пророчество против мене, и Товия и Санавалат бяха го подкрепили.
13 С тая цел бе подкупен, да се уплаша та да направя така, и да съгреша, и те да имат причина, да злословят, за да ме укорят.
14 Спомни си, Боже мой, за Товия и Санавалат според тия техни дела, още и за пророчицата Ноадия и за други пророци, които искаха да ме плашат.
15 Така се свърши стената на двадест и петия ден от месец Елул, за петдесет и два дни.
16 И когато чуха това всичките ни неприятели, тогова всичките езичници около нас се уплашиха, и много се снишиха пред своите очи, защото познаха, че това дело стана от нашия Бог.
17 При това, в ония дни Юдовите благородни пращаха често писма до Товия, и писма от Товия дохождаха до тях.
18 Защото в Юда имаше мнозина, които се бяха заклели да му бъдат привързани, понеже бе зет на Сехания Араховия син, и син му Иоанан бе взел за жена дъщеря на Месулама Варахиевия син.
19 Още и приказваха пред мене за неговите благодеяния, а моите думи носеха нему. И Товия пращаше писма за да уплаши.

Further Opposition to the Rebuilding
6 When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah,(A) Geshem(B) the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it—though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates— 2 Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages[a] on the plain of Ono.(C)”
But they were scheming to harm me; 3 so I sent messengers to them with this reply: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?” 4 Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.
5 Then, the fifth time, Sanballat(D) sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter 6 in which was written:
“It is reported among the nations—and Geshem[b](E) says it is true—that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king 7 and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us meet together.”
8 I sent him this reply: “Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head.”
9 They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.”
But I prayed, “Now strengthen my hands.”
10 One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, “Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple(F), and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you—by night they are coming to kill you.”
11 But I said, “Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!” 12 I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me(G) because Tobiah and Sanballat(H) had hired him. 13 He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.(I)
14 Remember(J) Tobiah and Sanballat,(K) my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophet(L) Noadiah and how she and the rest of the prophets(M) have been trying to intimidate me. 15 So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.
Opposition to the Completed Wall
16 When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.
17 Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them. 18 For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to Shekaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah. 19 Moreover, they kept reporting to me his good deeds and then telling him what I said. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.

Opposition to the Rebuilding Efforts Continues
6 When Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall and no breach remained in it (even though up to that time I had not positioned doors in the gates), 2 Sanballat and Geshem sent word to me saying, “Come on! Let’s set up a time to meet together at Kephirim[a] in the plain of Ono.” Now they intended to do me harm.
3 So I sent messengers to them saying, “I am engaged in[b] an important work, and I am unable to come down. Why should the work come to a halt when I leave it to come down to you?” 4 They contacted[c] me four times in this way, and I responded the same way each time.[d]
5 The fifth time that Sanballat sent his assistant to me in this way, he had an open letter in his hand. 6 Written in it were the following words:
“Among the nations it is rumored[e] (and Geshem[f] has substantiated[g] this) that you and the Jews have intentions of revolting, and for this reason you are building the wall. Furthermore, according to these rumors[h] you are going to become their king. 7 You have also established prophets to announce[i] in Jerusalem on your behalf, ‘We have a king in Judah!’ Now the king is going to hear about these rumors. So come on, let’s talk about this.”[j]
8 I sent word back to him, “We are not engaged in these activities you are describing.[k] All of this is a figment of your imagination.”[l]
9 All of them were wanting[m] to scare us, supposing, “Their hands will grow slack from the work, and it won’t get done.”
So now, strengthen my hands![n]
10 Then I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel. He was confined to his home.[o] He said, “Let’s set up a time to meet in the house of God, within the temple. Let’s close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you. It will surely be at night that they will come to kill you.”
11 But I replied, “Should a man like me run away? Would someone like me flee to the temple in order to save his life?[p] I will not go!” 12 I recognized the fact that God had not sent him, for he had spoken the prophecy against me as a hired agent of Tobiah and Sanballat.[q] 13 He had been hired to scare me so that I would do this and thereby sin. They would thus bring reproach on me and I[r] would be discredited.[s]
14 Remember, O my God, Tobiah and Sanballat in light of these actions of theirs—also Noadiah the prophetess and the other prophets who have been trying to scare me!
The Rebuilding of the Wall Is Finally Completed
15 So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth day of Elul,[t] in just fifty-two days. 16 When all our enemies heard and all the nations who were around us saw[u] this, they were greatly disheartened.[v] They knew that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.
17 In those days the aristocrats of Judah repeatedly sent letters to Tobiah, and responses from Tobiah were repeatedly coming to them. 18 For many in Judah had sworn allegiance to him,[w] because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah. His son Jonathan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah. 19 They were telling me about his good deeds and then taking back to him the things I said.[x] Tobiah, on the other hand, sent letters in order to scare[y] me.

- Nehemiah 6:2 tn It is not entirely clear whether the Hebrew word כְּפִירִים (kefirim) is a place-name not mentioned elsewhere in the OT (as indicated in the present translation; so also NAB, NASB) or whether it means “in [one of] the villages” (so, e.g., NIV, NRSV, NLT; see BDB 499 s.v.; HALOT 493 s.v.). The LXX and Vulgate understand it in the latter sense.
