22 Мъже братя и отци! Чуйте сега моето оправдание пред вас.
2 А като чуха, че им говори на еврейски език, още повече утихнаха. Тогава той каза:
3 (A)аз съм човек иудеин, родом от Тарс Киликийски, но възпитан в тоя град при нозете Гамалиилови, изучен точно по закона отечески и изпълнен с ревност към Бога, както сте и вие всички днес.
4 (B)Аз гоних до смърт последователите на това учение, като вързвах и предавах на затвор мъже и жени,
5 както свидетелствува за мене първосвещеникът и всички стареи, от които като бях взел и писма до братята, отивах в Дамаск да докарам вързани в Иерусалим и тамошните, за да бъдат наказани.
6 (C)Но, когато бях на път и наближавах до Дамаск, около пладне, изведнъж от небето ме огря силна светлина.
7 Аз паднах на земята и чух глас, който ми думаше: Савле, Савле, що Ме гониш?
8 Аз пък отговорих: кой си Ти, Господине? А Той ми рече: Аз съм Иисус Назорей, Когото ти гониш.
9 Ония, които бяха с мене, видяха светлината и се уплашиха; но гласа на Оногова, Който ми говореше, не чуха.
10 Тогава рекох: какво да правя, Господи? А Господ ми рече: стани та иди в Дамаск, и там ще ти бъде казано всичко, що ти е наредено да сториш.
11 И понеже от блясъка на оная светлина не можех да виждам, поведоха ме за ръка ония, които бяха с мене, и тъй дойдох в Дамаск.
12 А някой си Анания, мъж благочестив по Закона, с добро име между всички иудеи в Дамаск,
13 дойде при мене, застана и ми рече: брате Савле, прогледай! И аз тозчас прогледах и погледнах към него.
14 (D)А той ми каза: Бог на нашите отци те е отредил да познаеш волята Му, да видиш Праведника и да чуеш глас от устата Му,
15 защото ще Му бъдеш свидетел пред всички човеци за онова, що си видял и чул.
16 И сега що се бавиш? Стани, кръсти се и умий греховете си, като призовеш името на Господа Иисуса.
17 А когато се върнах в Иерусалим и се молех в храма, унесох се
18 (E)и Го видях да ми казва: побързай та излез скоро от Иерусалим, защото няма да приемат твоето свидетелство за Мене.
19 Аз пък отговорих: Господи, те знаят, че аз затварях и биех по синагогите ония, които вярваха в Тебе;
20 (F)и когато се проливаше кръвта на Стефана, Твоя свидетел, там стоях и аз и одобрявах неговото убиване, като пазех дрехите на ония, които го убиваха.
21 (G)И каза ми: иди! Аз ще те пратя далеко – при езичниците.
22 До тая дума го слушаха, но след това издигнаха гласа си и викаха: премахни от земята един такъв! Той не бива да живее!
23 И понеже те крещяха, размятваха си дрехите и хвърляха прах във въздуха,
24 хилядникът заповяда да го водят в стана и поръча да го разпитват с бичуване, за да узнае, по коя причина викаха тъй против него.
25 Но, когато го разтегнаха с ремъци, Павел рече на стотника, който стоеше там: нима ви е позволено да бичувате римски гражданин, и то неосъден?
26 Като чу това стотникът, отиде та обади на хилядника и рече: гледай, какво правиш, защото тоя човек е римски гражданин.
27 Тогава хилядникът се приближи до него и рече: кажи ми, ти римски гражданин ли си? Той отговори: да.
28 А хилядникът каза: аз съм придобил това гражданство за много пари. Павел рече: аз пък съм се и родил такъв.
29 И начаса отстъпиха от него тия, които щяха да го разпитват. А и хилядникът, като узна, че той е римски гражданин, се уплаши, задето го бе вързал.
30 На другия ден, като желаеше да узнае навярно, в какво го обвиняват иудеите, освободи го от оковите и заповяда да дойдат първосвещениците и целият им синедрион, па доведе долу Павла и го изправи пред тях.

22 “형제 여러분, 그리고 어르신네 여러분, 내가 이제 여러분에게 드리는 해명을 잘 들어 주시기 바랍니다.” 2 사람들은 바울이 자기들에게 아람 말로 이야기하는 것을 듣고 훨씬 조용해졌다. 그러자 바울이 말하였다. 3 “나는 유대 사람으로서 길리기아의 다소에서 태어났지만, 자라기는 이 예루살렘 성에서 자랐습니다. 나는 가말리엘[a] 선생님 밑에서 조상들의 율법에 따라 엄한 교육을 받았습니다. 오늘 여러분 모두가 그러하신 것처럼, 나도 하나님께 열성적인 사람이었습니다. 4 나는 이 ‘도’ 를 따르는 사람들을 박해하여 죽이기까지 하였으며, 남자와 여자를 가리지 않고 붙잡아 감옥에 처넣었습니다. 5 내 말이 사실이라는 것은 대제사장과 모든 장로[b]들이 증언해 줄 것입니다. 나는 이 지도자들이 다마스커스에 사는 동포들에게 보내는 공문을 받아 가지고 다마스커스로 갔습니다. 그곳에 있는 신도들까지 잡아서 예루살렘으로 끌어다가 벌을 받게 하려는 것이었습니다.
바울, 자기의 개종에 대해 이야기하다
6 그러나 다마스커스로 가는 길에 어떤 일이 일어났습니다. 정오쯤에 다마스커스 가까이에 이르렀는데, 하늘에서 갑자기 밝은 빛이 비치며 나를 둘러쌌습니다. 7 내가 땅바닥에 엎드려 있는데 내게 말하는 소리가 들렸습니다. ‘사울아, 사울아, 어찌하여 네가 나를 박해하느냐?’
8 ‘주여, 당신은 누구십니까?’ 하고 내가 여쭈었습니다.
‘나는 네가 박해하고 있는 나사렛 예수다.’ 하고 그분이 대답하셨습니다. 9 나와 함께 있던 사람들은 그 빛은 보았지만, 내게 말씀하시는 그 목소리는 알아듣지[c] 못하였습니다.
10 내가 여쭈었습니다. ‘주님, 제가 어떻게 해야겠습니까?’
‘일어나 다마스커스로 가라. 그곳에 가면 네게 맡겨진 일들이 무엇인지 듣게 될 것이다.’ 주께서 말씀하셨습니다. 11 나는 밝은 빛 때문에 눈이 보이지 않게 되었습니다. 그래서 같이 가던 사람들이 내 손을 잡아 다마스커스로 데려갔습니다.
12 다마스커스에는 아나니아[d]라는 사람이 있었습니다. 그는 모세의 율법을 잘 지키는 경건한 사람으로서, 그곳에 사는 모든 유대 사람에게서 칭찬을 듣는 사람이었습니다. 13 아나니아가 나를 찾아와 말하였습니다. ‘사울 형제, 이제 다시 보십시오!’ 그러자 바로 그 순간 나는 그를 볼 수 있었습니다.
14 그러자 아나니아가 말하였습니다. ‘우리 조상의 하나님께서는 당신에게 자신의 뜻을 알려 주시고, 그 의로우신 분을 보게 하시며, 그분의 입에서 나오는 목소리를 듣게 하시려고 당신을 택하셨습니다. 15 당신은 당신이 보고 들은 것을 모든 사람 앞에서 증언하는 증인이 될 것입니다. 16 그러니 이제 무엇을 망설이겠습니까? 어서 일어나 세례를 받고, 주님의 이름을 불러 죄를 씻으십시오.’
17 얼마 뒤에 내가 예루살렘으로 돌아왔을 때, 하루는 성전에서 기도를 하다가 어떤 환상을 보았습니다. 18 나는 주님을 보았습니다. 주께서 내게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘서둘러라. 지금 당장 예루살렘을 떠나거라. 예루살렘 사람들은 나에 대한 네 증언을 받아들이지 않을 것이기 때문이다.’
19 내가 대답하였습니다. ‘주님, 이 사람들은 제가 회당마다 돌아다니면서 주님을 믿는 사람들을 붙들어 매질했던 것을 알고 있습니다. 20 그리고 주님의 증인인 스데반이 죽임을 당했을 때, 저는 그 일에 찬성하며 그곳에 서서 스데반을 죽이는 사람들의 옷을 지키고 있었습니다.’
21 그러자 주께서 내게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘가라! 내가 너를 멀리 이방 사람들에게 보내겠다.’”
22 유대 사람들은 바울의 말을 여기까지 들었다. 그러고는 목소리를 높여 소리쳤다. “이 자를 없애 버려라. 이런 자는 죽어 마땅하다!”
23 그들은 옷을 벗어 던지고 공중으로 흙을 뿌리며, 미친 듯이 소리를 질렀다. 24 천인대장[e] 은 부하들에게 바울을 군부대로 데리고 들어가라고 명령하였다. 그는 유대 사람들이 바울에게 소리 지르는 까닭을 알아내려고 바울을 채찍질해 심문하라고 하였다. 25 군인들이 그를 심문하려고 묶자, 바울은 그곳에 서 있던 백인대장[f]에게 “당신이 로마 시민을 재판도 하지 않고 채찍질하는 것이 법에 맞는 일이오?”[g] 하고 말하였다.
26 백인대장은 그 말을 듣고 천인대장에게 가서 말하였다. “어떻게 하시렵니까? 이 사람은 로마 시민입니다.”
27 천인대장은 바울에게 와서 물었다. “당신이 로마 시민이오?”
“그렇습니다.” 바울이 대답하였다.
28 “나는 많은 돈을 써서 로마 시민권을 얻었소.” 천인대장이 말하였다.
“나는 로마 시민으로 태어났습니다.” 바울이 대답하였다.
29 그러자 바울을 심문하려던 사람들이 곧장 뒤로 물러났다. 천인대장 자신도, 자기가 로마 시민인 바울을 쇠사슬로 묶었다는 사실을 깨닫고는 겁을 먹었다.
바울, 유대 사람 지도자들에게 이야기하다
30 다음 날 천인대장은 유대 사람들이 무슨 일로 바울을 고발했는지 그 까닭을 알아보기로 하였다. 그는 높은 제사장들과 유대 의회 의원들을 불러 모았다. 그리고 바울을 묶은 쇠사슬을 풀어 주었다. 그런 다음 그는 바울을 데려다가 그들 앞에 세웠다.

22 1 “Brothers and fathers,(A) listen now to my defense.”
2 When they heard him speak to them in Aramaic,(B) they became very quiet.
Then Paul said: 3 “I am a Jew,(C) born in Tarsus(D) of Cilicia,(E) but brought up in this city. I studied under(F) Gamaliel(G) and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors.(H) I was just as zealous(I) for God as any of you are today. 4 I persecuted(J) the followers of this Way(K) to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison,(L) 5 as the high priest and all the Council(M) can themselves testify. I even obtained letters from them to their associates(N) in Damascus,(O) and went there to bring these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished.
6 “About noon as I came near Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me.(P) 7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, ‘Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?’
8 “‘Who are you, Lord?’ I asked.
“ ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth,(Q) whom you are persecuting,’ he replied. 9 My companions saw the light,(R) but they did not understand the voice(S) of him who was speaking to me.
10 “‘What shall I do, Lord?’ I asked.
“ ‘Get up,’ the Lord said, ‘and go into Damascus. There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.’(T) 11 My companions led me by the hand into Damascus, because the brilliance of the light had blinded me.(U)
12 “A man named Ananias came to see me.(V) He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there.(W) 13 He stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ And at that very moment I was able to see him.
14 “Then he said: ‘The God of our ancestors(X) has chosen you to know his will and to see(Y) the Righteous One(Z) and to hear words from his mouth. 15 You will be his witness(AA) to all people of what you have seen(AB) and heard. 16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized(AC) and wash your sins away,(AD) calling on his name.’(AE)
17 “When I returned to Jerusalem(AF) and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance(AG) 18 and saw the Lord speaking to me. ‘Quick!’ he said. ‘Leave Jerusalem immediately, because the people here will not accept your testimony about me.’
19 “‘Lord,’ I replied, ‘these people know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison(AH) and beat(AI) those who believe in you. 20 And when the blood of your martyr[a] Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’(AJ)
21 “Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’ ”(AK)
Paul the Roman Citizen
22 The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted, “Rid the earth of him!(AL) He’s not fit to live!”(AM)
23 As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks(AN) and flinging dust into the air,(AO) 24 the commander ordered that Paul be taken into the barracks.(AP) He directed(AQ) that he be flogged and interrogated in order to find out why the people were shouting at him like this. 25 As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, “Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?”(AR)
26 When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported it. “What are you going to do?” he asked. “This man is a Roman citizen.”
27 The commander went to Paul and asked, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?”
“Yes, I am,” he answered.
28 Then the commander said, “I had to pay a lot of money for my citizenship.”
“But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied.
29 Those who were about to interrogate him(AS) withdrew immediately. The commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen,(AT) in chains.(AU)
Paul Before the Sanhedrin
30 The commander wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews.(AV) So the next day he released him(AW) and ordered the chief priests and all the members of the Sanhedrin(AX) to assemble. Then he brought Paul and had him stand before them.

2 (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)
3 I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.
4 And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
5 As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.
6 And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.
7 And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
8 And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.
9 And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.
10 And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.
11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.
12 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,
13 Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.
14 And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.
15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
17 And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;
18 And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
19 And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:
20 And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.
21 And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.
22 And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.
23 And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,
24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.
25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.
27 Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.
28 And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.
29 Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
30 On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
