^(B)A wise son makes a glad father,
    ^(C)but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.
²^(D)Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit,
    ^(E)but righteousness delivers from death.
³^(F)The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry,
    ^(G)but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
⁴A slack hand ^(H)causes poverty,
    ^(I)but the hand of the diligent makes rich.
⁵He who ^(J)gathers in summer is a prudent son,
    but he who sleeps in harvest is ^(K)a son who brings shame.
⁶Blessings are on the head of the righteous,
    but ^(L)the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.^[a]
⁷^(M)The memory of the righteous is a blessing,
    but ^(N)the name of the wicked will rot.
⁸^(O)The wise of heart will receive commandments,
    but a babbling fool will come to ruin.
⁹^(P)Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,
    but he who makes his ways crooked ^(Q)will be found out.
¹⁰Whoever ^(R)winks the eye causes trouble,
    and a babbling fool will come to ruin.
¹¹^(S)The mouth of the righteous is ^(T)a fountain of life,
    but the mouth of the wicked ^(U)conceals violence.
¹²Hatred stirs up strife,
    but ^(V)love covers all offenses.
¹³On the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found,
    but ^(W)a rod is for the back of him who ^(X)lacks sense.
¹⁴The wise ^(Y)lay up knowledge,
    but ^(Z)the mouth of a fool brings ruin near.
¹⁵^(AA)A rich man's wealth is his strong city;
    the poverty of the poor is their ruin.
¹⁶The wage of the righteous leads ^(AB)to life,
    the gain of the wicked to sin.
¹⁷Whoever heeds instruction is on ^(AC)the path to life,
    but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.
¹⁸The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,
    and whoever utters slander is a fool.
¹⁹^(AD)When words are many, transgression is not lacking,
    ^(AE)but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.
²⁰The tongue of the righteous is ^(AF)choice silver;
    the heart of the wicked is of little worth.
²¹The lips of the righteous feed many,
    but fools die for ^(AG)lack of sense.
²²^(AH)The blessing of the Lord makes rich,
    and he adds no sorrow with it.^[b]
²³Doing wrong is ^(AI)like a joke to a fool,
    but ^(AJ)wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding.
²⁴^(AK)What the wicked dreads ^(AL)will come upon him,
    but ^(AM)the desire of the righteous will be granted.
²⁵When ^(AN)the tempest passes, the wicked is no more,
    but ^(AO)the righteous is established forever.
²⁶Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,
    so is the sluggard to those who send him.
²⁷^(AP)The fear of the Lord prolongs life,
    ^(AQ)but the years of the wicked will be short.
²⁸^(AR)The hope of the righteous brings joy,
    ^(AS)but the expectation of the wicked will perish.
²⁹^(AT)The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the blameless,
    but destruction to evildoers.
³⁰^(AU)The righteous will never be removed,
    but ^(AV)the wicked will not dwell in the land.
³¹^(AW)The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom,
    but the perverse tongue will be cut off.
³²The lips of the righteous ^(AX)know what is acceptable,
    but the mouth of the wicked, ^(AY)what is perverse.

Descendants of Reuben

5 The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (^(A)for he was the firstborn, but because ^(B)he defiled his father's couch, ^(C)his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel, so that he could not be enrolled as the oldest son; ²^(D)though Judah became strong among his brothers and a ^(E)chief came from him, yet the birthright belonged to Joseph), ³the ^(F)sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. ⁴The sons of Joel: Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son, ⁵Micah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son, ⁶Beerah his son, whom ^(G)Tiglath-pileser^[a] king of Assyria carried away into exile; he was a chief of the Reubenites. ⁷And his kinsmen by their clans, ^(H)when the genealogy of their generations was recorded: the chief, Jeiel, and Zechariah, ⁸and Bela the son of Azaz, son of ^(I)Shema, son of Joel, who lived in ^(J)Aroer, as far as ^(K)Nebo and ^(L)Baal-meon. ⁹He also lived to the east as far as the entrance of the desert this side of the Euphrates, because their livestock had multiplied ^(M)in the land of Gilead. ¹⁰And in the days of Saul they waged war against the ^(N)Hagrites, who fell into their hand. And they lived in their tents throughout all the region east of Gilead.

Descendants of Gad

¹¹The sons of Gad lived over against them in the land of Bashan as far as ^(O)Salecah: ¹²Joel the chief, Shapham the second, Janai, and Shaphat in Bashan. ¹³And their kinsmen according to their fathers' houses: Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia and Eber, seven. ¹⁴These were the sons of Abihail the son of Huri, son of Jaroah, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Jeshishai, son of Jahdo, son of Buz. ¹⁵Ahi the son of Abdiel, son of Guni, was chief in their fathers' houses, ¹⁶and they lived in Gilead, in Bashan and in its towns, and in all the pasturelands of ^(P)Sharon to their limits. ¹⁷All of these were recorded in genealogies in the days of ^(Q)Jotham king of Judah, and in the days of ^(R)Jeroboam king of Israel.

¹⁸The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had valiant men who carried shield and sword, and drew the bow, ^(S)expert in war, 44,760, able to go to war. ¹⁹They waged war against the ^(T)Hagrites, ^(U)Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab. ²⁰And when they prevailed^[b] over them, the Hagrites and all who were with them were given into their hands, ^(V)for they cried out to God in the battle, and he granted their urgent plea ^(W)because they trusted in him. ²¹They carried off their livestock: 50,000 of their camels, 250,000 sheep, 2,000 donkeys, and 100,000 men alive. ²²For many fell, because the war was of God. And they lived ^(X)in their place until ^(Y)the exile.

The Half-Tribe of Manasseh

²³The members of the half-tribe of Manasseh lived in the land. They were very numerous from Bashan to Baal-hermon, ^(Z)Senir, and Mount Hermon. ²⁴These were the heads of their fathers' houses: Epher,^[c] Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, mighty warriors, famous men, heads of their fathers' houses. ²⁵But they broke faith with the God of their fathers, and ^(AA)whored ^(AB)after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them. ²⁶So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of ^(AC)Pul king of Assyria, the spirit of ^(AD)Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and he took them into exile, namely, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, and brought them ^(AE)to Halah, ^(AF)Habor, Hara, and ^(AG)the river Gozan, to this day.

Descendants of Levi

6 ^[d] ^(AH)The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. ²^(AI)The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. ³^(AJ)The children of Amram: Aaron, Moses, and Miriam. ^(AK)The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ⁴^(AL)^(AM)Eleazar fathered ^(AN)Phinehas, Phinehas fathered Abishua, ⁵Abishua fathered Bukki, Bukki fathered Uzzi, ⁶Uzzi fathered Zerahiah, Zerahiah fathered ^(AO)Meraioth, ⁷Meraioth fathered Amariah, Amariah fathered Ahitub, ⁸^(AP)Ahitub fathered ^(AQ)Zadok, Zadok fathered Ahimaaz, ⁹Ahimaaz fathered Azariah, Azariah fathered Johanan, ¹⁰and Johanan fathered Azariah (^(AR)it was he who served as priest ^(AS)in the house that Solomon built in Jerusalem). ¹¹^(AT)Azariah fathered ^(AU)Amariah, Amariah fathered Ahitub, ¹²Ahitub fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered ^(AV)Shallum, ¹³Shallum fathered ^(AW)Hilkiah, Hilkiah fathered Azariah, ¹⁴Azariah fathered ^(AX)Seraiah, Seraiah fathered Jehozadak; ¹⁵and ^(AY)Jehozadak went into exile when the Lord sent Judah and Jerusalem into exile ^(AZ)by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.

¹⁶^[e] The ^(BA)sons of Levi: Gershom, Kohath, and Merari. ¹⁷And these are the names of the sons of Gershom: ^(BB)Libni and Shimei. ¹⁸^(BC)The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. ¹⁹^(BD)The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. These are the clans of the Levites according to their fathers. ²⁰^(BE)Of Gershom: Libni his son, ^(BF)Jahath his son, Zimmah his son, ²¹Joah his son, Iddo his son, Zerah his son, Jeatherai his son. ²²^(BG)The sons of Kohath: Amminadab his son, Korah his son, Assir his son, ²³Elkanah his son, Ebiasaph his son, Assir his son, ²⁴Tahath his son, Uriel his son, Uzziah his son, and Shaul his son. ²⁵The sons of Elkanah: Amasai and Ahimoth, ²⁶Elkanah his son, Zophai his son, Nahath his son, ²⁷Eliab his son, Jeroham his son, Elkanah his son. ²⁸The sons of Samuel: Joel^[f] his firstborn, the second Abijah.^[g] ²⁹^(BH)The sons of Merari: Mahli, Libni his son, Shimei his son, Uzzah his son, ³⁰Shimea his son, Haggiah his son, and Asaiah his son.

³¹These are the men ^(BI)whom David put in charge of the service of song in the house of the Lord ^(BJ)after the ark rested there. ³²They ministered with song before the tabernacle of the tent of meeting until Solomon built the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, and they performed their service according to their order. ³³These are the men who served and their sons. Of the sons of the Kohathites: Heman the singer the son of Joel, son of ^(BK)Samuel, ³⁴son of Elkanah, son of Jeroham, son of Eliel, son of Toah, ³⁵son of Zuph, son of Elkanah, son of Mahath, son of Amasai, ³⁶son of Elkanah, son of Joel, son of Azariah, son of Zephaniah, ³⁷son of Tahath, son of Assir, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, ³⁸son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, son of Israel; ³⁹and his brother ^(BL)Asaph, who stood on his right hand, namely, Asaph the son of Berechiah, son of Shimea, ⁴⁰son of Michael, son of Baaseiah, son of Malchijah, ⁴¹son of Ethni, son of Zerah, son of Adaiah, ⁴²son of Ethan, son of Zimmah, son of Shimei, ⁴³son of Jahath, son of Gershom, son of Levi. ⁴⁴On the left hand were their brothers, the sons of Merari: Ethan the son of Kishi, son of Abdi, son of Malluch, ⁴⁵son of Hashabiah, son of Amaziah, son of Hilkiah, ⁴⁶son of Amzi, son of Bani, son of Shemer, ⁴⁷son of Mahli, son of Mushi, son of Merari, son of Levi. ⁴⁸And their brothers the Levites were appointed for all the service of the tabernacle of the house of God.

⁴⁹But Aaron and his sons made offerings ^(BM)on the altar of burnt offering and on ^(BN)the altar of incense for all the work of the Most Holy Place, and ^(BO)to make atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded. ⁵⁰^(BP)These are the sons of Aaron: Eleazar his son, Phinehas his son, Abishua his son, ⁵¹Bukki his son, Uzzi his son, Zerahiah his son, ⁵²Meraioth his son, Amariah his son, Ahitub his son, ⁵³Zadok his son, Ahimaaz his son.

⁵⁴These are their dwelling places according to their ^(BQ)settlements within their borders: to the sons of Aaron of the ^(BR)clans of Kohathites, for theirs was the first lot, ⁵⁵to them they gave Hebron in the land of Judah and its surrounding pasturelands, ⁵⁶^(BS)but the fields of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh. ⁵⁷^(BT)To the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of refuge: Hebron, Libnah with its pasturelands, Jattir, Eshtemoa with its pasturelands, ⁵⁸Hilen with its pasturelands, Debir with its pasturelands, ⁵⁹Ashan with its pasturelands, and Beth-shemesh with its pasturelands; ⁶⁰and from the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon,^[h] Geba with its pasturelands, Alemeth with its pasturelands, and Anathoth with its pasturelands. All their cities throughout their clans were thirteen.

⁶¹^(BU)To the rest of the Kohathites were given by lot out of the clan of the tribe, out of the half-tribe, the half of Manasseh, ten cities. ⁶²To the Gershomites according to their clans were allotted thirteen cities out of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and Manasseh in Bashan. ⁶³^(BV)To the Merarites according to their clans were allotted twelve cities out of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun. ⁶⁴^(BW)So the people of Israel gave the Levites the cities with their pasturelands. ⁶⁵They gave by lot out of the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin ^(BX)these cities that are mentioned by name.

⁶⁶^(BY)And some of the clans of the sons of Kohath had cities of their territory out of the tribe of Ephraim. ⁶⁷They were given the cities of refuge: Shechem with its pasturelands in the hill country of Ephraim, Gezer with its pasturelands, ⁶⁸^(BZ)Jokmeam with its pasturelands, Beth-horon with its pasturelands, ⁶⁹Aijalon with its pasturelands, Gath-rimmon with its pasturelands, ⁷⁰and out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Aner with its pasturelands, and Bileam with its pasturelands, for the rest of the clans of the Kohathites.

⁷¹^(CA)To the Gershomites were given out of the clan of the half-tribe of Manasseh: Golan in Bashan with its pasturelands and ^(CB)Ashtaroth with its pasturelands; ⁷²and out of the tribe of Issachar: Kedesh with its pasturelands, Daberath with its pasturelands, ⁷³Ramoth with its pasturelands, and Anem with its pasturelands; ⁷⁴out of the tribe of Asher: Mashal with its pasturelands, Abdon with its pasturelands, ⁷⁵Hukok with its pasturelands, and Rehob with its pasturelands; ⁷⁶and out of the tribe of Naphtali: Kedesh in Galilee with its pasturelands, Hammon with its pasturelands, and Kiriathaim with its pasturelands. ⁷⁷^(CC)To the rest of the Merarites were allotted out of the tribe of Zebulun: ^(CD)Rimmono with its pasturelands, ^(CE)Tabor with its pasturelands, ⁷⁸and ^(CF)beyond the Jordan at Jericho, on the east side of the Jordan, out of the tribe of Reuben: Bezer in the wilderness with its pasturelands, Jahzah with its pasturelands, ⁷⁹Kedemoth with its pasturelands, and Mephaath with its pasturelands; ⁸⁰and out of the tribe of Gad: ^(CG)Ramoth in Gilead with its pasturelands, ^(CH)Mahanaim with its pasturelands, ⁸¹^(CI)Heshbon with its pasturelands, and ^(CJ)Jazer with its pasturelands.

Philippians 4

4 Therefore, my brothers,^[a] whom I love and ^(A)long for, ^(B)my joy and ^(C)crown, ^(D)stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.

Exhortation, Encouragement, and Prayer

²I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to ^(E)agree in the Lord. ³Yes, I ask you also, true companion,^[b] help these women, who have labored^[c] side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, ^(F)whose names are in the book of life.

⁴^(G)Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. ⁵Let your reasonableness^[d] be known to everyone. ^(H)The Lord is at hand; ⁶^(I)do not be anxious about anything, ^(J)but in everything by prayer and supplication ^(K)with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. ⁷And ^(L)the peace of God, ^(M)which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

⁸Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. ⁹What you have learned^[e] and ^(N)received and heard and seen ^(O)in me—practice these things, and ^(P)the God of peace will be with you.

God's Provision

¹⁰I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length ^(Q)you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. ¹¹Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be ^(R)content. ¹²I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and ^(S)hunger, abundance and ^(T)need. ¹³I can do all things ^(U)through him who strengthens me.

¹⁴Yet it was kind of you ^(V)to share^[f] my trouble. ¹⁵And you Philippians yourselves know that ^(W)in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, ^(X)no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. ¹⁶Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. ¹⁷^(Y)Not that I seek the gift, but I seek ^(Z)the fruit that increases to your credit.^[g] ¹⁸I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, ^(AA)having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, ^(AB)a fragrant offering, ^(AC)a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. ¹⁹And my God ^(AD)will supply every need of yours ^(AE)according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. ²⁰To ^(AF)our God and Father be ^(AG)glory forever and ever.
