Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

²⁴ So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that ^(A)a riot was beginning, he took water and ^(B)washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of ^(C)this man's blood;^{[a] (D)}see to it yourselves.” ²⁵ And all the people answered, ^(E)“His blood be on us and ^(F)on our children!” ²⁶ Then he released for them Barabbas, and having ^(G)scourged^[b] Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

^27 (H)Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the ^(I)governor's headquarters,^[c] and they gathered the whole ^(J)battalion^[d] before him. ²⁸ And they stripped him and put ^(K)a scarlet robe on him, ²⁹ and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they ^(L)mocked him, saying, “Hail, ^(M)King of the Jews!” ³⁰ And ^(N)they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. ³¹ And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and ^(O)led him away to crucify him.

¹⁵ So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having ^(A)scourged^[a] Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

^16 (B)And the soldiers led him away inside ^(C)the palace (that is, ^(D)the governor's headquarters),^[b] and they called together the whole ^(E)battalion.^{[c] 17} And they clothed him in ^(F)a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. ¹⁸ And they began to salute him, ^(G)“Hail, King of the Jews!” ¹⁹ And they were striking his head with a reed and ^(H)spitting on him and ^(I)kneeling down in homage to him. ²⁰ And when they had ^(J)mocked him, they stripped him of ^(K)the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they ^(L)led him out to crucify him.

²⁵ He released the man who had been thrown into prison ^(A)for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, ^(B)but he delivered Jesus over to their will.

The Crucifixion

^26 (C)And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.

¹² From then on ^(A)Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. ^(B)Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” ¹³ So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on ^(C)the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic^[a] Gabbatha. ¹⁴ Now it was ^(D)the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour.^[b] He said to the Jews, ^(E)“Behold your King!” ¹⁵ They cried out, ^(F)“Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” ^16 (G)So he ^(H)delivered him over to them to be crucified.
