The Passover with the Disciples

^17 (A)Now on ^(B)the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” ¹⁸ He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ^(C)‘The Teacher says, ^(D)My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” ¹⁹ And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.

^20 (E)When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.^{[a] 21} And as they were eating, ^(F)he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” ²² And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” ²³ He answered, ^(G)“He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. ²⁴ The Son of Man goes ^(H)as it is written of him, but ^(I)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! ^(J)It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” ²⁵ Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, ^(K)Rabbi?” He said to him, ^(L)“You have said so.”

^26 (M)Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and ^(N)after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; ^(O)this is my body.” ²⁷ And he took a cup, and when he ^(P)had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, ²⁸ for ^(Q)this is my ^(R)blood of the^[b] covenant, which is poured out for ^(S)many ^(T)for the forgiveness of sins. ²⁹ I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you ^(U)in my Father's kingdom.”

^12 (A)And on ^(B)the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they ^(C)sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” ¹³ And he sent ^(D)two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, ¹⁴ and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ^(E)‘The Teacher says, Where is ^(F)my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ ¹⁵ And he will show you ^(G)a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.” ¹⁶ And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

^17 (H)And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. ¹⁸ And as they were reclining at table and eating, ^(I)Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, ^(J)one who is eating with me.” ¹⁹ They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” ²⁰ He said to them, “It is ^(K)one of the twelve, ^(L)one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. ²¹ For the Son of Man goes ^(M)as it is written of him, but ^(N)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! ^(O)It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

Follow him into the house that he enters ¹¹ and tell the master of the house, ^(C)‘The Teacher says to you, Where is ^(D)the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ ¹² And he will show you ^(E)a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” ¹³ And they went and found it ^(F)just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

^14 (G)And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. ¹⁵ And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. ¹⁶ For I tell you I will not eat it^{[b] (H)}until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” ¹⁷ And he took a cup, and ^(I)when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. ^18 (J)For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine ^(K)until the kingdom of God comes.” ^19 (L)And he took bread, and ^(M)when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ^(N)“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” ²⁰ And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, ^(O)“This cup that is poured out for you is ^(P)the new ^(Q)covenant in my blood.^{[c] 21 (R)}But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is ^(S)with me on the table. ²² For the Son of Man goes ^(T)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” ²³ And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.

Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet

13 Now ^(A)before ^(B)the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that ^(C)his hour had come ^(D)to depart out of this world to the Father, ^(E)having loved ^(F)his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. ² During supper, when ^(G)the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, ³ Jesus, knowing ^(H)that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that ^(I)he had come from God and ^(J)was going back to God, ⁴ rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, ^(K)tied it around his waist. ⁵ Then he ^(L)poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. ⁶ He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” ^7 (M)Jesus answered him, “What I am doing ^(N)you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” ^8 (O)Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, ^(P)“If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” ⁹ Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” ¹⁰ Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, ^(Q)except for his feet,^[a] but is completely clean. And ^(R)you^[b] are clean, ^(S)but not every one of you.” ^11 (T)For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

¹² When he had washed their feet and ^(U)put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, ^(V)“Do you understand what I have done to you? ^13 (W)You call me ^(X)Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. ¹⁴ If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, ^(Y)you also ought to wash one another's feet. ¹⁵ For I have given you an example, ^(Z)that you also should do just as I have done to you. ¹⁶ Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(AA)a servant^[c] is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. ¹⁷ If you know these things, ^(AB)blessed are you if you do them. ^18 (AC)I am not speaking of all of you; I know ^(AD)whom I have chosen. But ^(AE)the Scripture will be fulfilled,^{[d] (AF)}‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ ^19 (AG)I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. ²⁰ Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(AH)whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”

¹⁴ Therefore, my beloved, ^(A)flee from idolatry. ¹⁵ I speak ^(B)as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. ^16 (C)The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? ^(D)The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? ¹⁷ Because there is one bread, we who are many are ^(E)one body, for we all partake of the one bread. ¹⁸ Consider ^(F)the people of Israel:^{[a] (G)}are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? ¹⁹ What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that ^(H)an idol is anything? ²⁰ No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice ^(I)they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. ^21 (J)You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and ^(K)the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and ^(L)the table of demons. ^22 (M)Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? ^(N)Are we stronger than he?

The Lord's Supper

¹⁷ But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. ¹⁸ For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, ^(A)I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part,^{[a] 19} for ^(B)there must be factions among you in order ^(C)that those who are genuine among you may be recognized. ²⁰ When you come together, it is not the Lord's supper that you eat. ²¹ For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, ^(D)another gets drunk. ²² What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise ^(E)the church of God and ^(F)humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not.

²³ For ^(G)I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that ^(H)the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, ²⁴ and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for^[b] you. Do this in remembrance of me.”^{[c] 25} In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” ²⁶ For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death ^(I)until he comes.

^27 (J)Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord ^(K)in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning ^(L)the body and blood of the Lord. ^28 (M)Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. ²⁹ For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. ³⁰ That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some ^(N)have died.^{[d] 31 (O)}But if we judged^[e] ourselves truly, we would not be judged. ³² But when we are judged by the Lord, ^(P)we are disciplined^[f] so that we may not be ^(Q)condemned along with the world.

³³ So then, my brothers,^[g] when you come together to eat, wait for^[h] one another— ^34 (R)if anyone is hungry, ^(S)let him eat at home—so that when you come together it will not be for judgment. About the other things ^(T)I will give directions ^(U)when I come.
