The NIV 365 Day Devotional
Faith Follows
In this reading there is a showdown of power between the forces of evil and the forces of good, between those who worshiped a false god (Baal) and those who worshiped the God of Israel.
Before God shows his power, Elijah the prophet turns to the people and asks a very simple question:
- “How long will you waver between two opinions?”
- His is a question for all humankind. Who will we follow? Who is worthy of our pursuit?
- He further clarifies, “If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”
Faith has feet. Faith follows. We all have faith; it’s just a matter of who or what we follow. In this passage, Elijah distinguishes between the powers of darkness and God’s power. The people responded by not responding. They said nothing, which meant they would continue to choose Baal over God.
Life today is less clear. It’s not always easy to discern what is of God and what is not. But God is gracious. Every day we have the opportunity to follow him. Every day, he invites us to know and worship him. His arms are open wide.
Lord, I choose you. Show me what is evil, and teach me how I can better follow you. I want to have faith only in you and your power. Amen.
Who in your life has demonstrated a steady faith, even when circumstances in their lives have been hard? How were they faithful to God? Consider writing them a note of encouragement.
