Who Is My Neighbor?

A photo of Sarah Jackson, author of The House That Love Built.By Sarah Jackson

If you don’t think love actually makes a difference in the world, we have a story to tell you.

This love story has caught the attention of decision-makers around the world. The United Nations sent a representative to study Casa de Paz as a model for immigrant support programs around the world. A congressman gathers us at his quarterly immigration table. A congresswoman involves us in a monthly phone-in conference. A senator and his staff consult with us. Candidates from both sides of the aisle visit, and one left in tears.

One congressman spent an afternoon volunteering at Casa de Paz. College professors send their students to intern with us. Elementary-school teachers bring their classes to volunteer. A historic denomination asked us to join them as a congregation because they say we’re fulfilling the mission of the church: “for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law” (Rom. 13:8).

Hope When Life Unravels: An Interview with Adam B. Dooley

Adam B. DooleyWhat are the upside-down yet encouraging truths of the book of Job and other key Bible passages that remind us of the ways God is present in our pain? Why does God allow suffering? And why does God seem to go silent when we’re in pain? How does a pastor work through his faith in the gut-wrenching three-year struggle his family endured with his son’s cancer?

Bible Gateway interviewed Adam B. Dooley (@adambdooley) about his book, Hope When Life Unravels: Finding God When It Hurts (Zondervan, 2020).

What are the circumstances that prompted you to write this book?

Adam B. Dooley: When my son Carson was diagnosed with cancer in 2011, I knew God would teach us a great deal about himself through the ordeal. Because he was just short of four years old, I realized Carson would forget much of what he went through if I didn’t write it down. So, I kept a journal of key moments along the way, interspersed with my interpretations of the events. Near the end of our three-year journey, it dawned on me that these formative experiences might be good for the greater church.

How to Live the Bible — Real Freedom

howtostudythebible

This is the one-hundred-eleventh lesson in author and pastor Mel Lawrenz’ How to Live the Bible series. If you know someone or a group who would like to follow along on this journey through Scripture, they can get more info and sign up to receive these essays via email here.

Mel is the author of A Chronicle of Grief: Finding Life After Traumatic Loss. See his newest message about world changing events now and in the book of Acts here.

No matter who we are or the position in life we occupy, we all value the wonderful privilege of freedom. But freedom is an easy ideal to voice, but a hard-won reality. Multitudes of men and women have gone to war and lost their lives to win the freedom of the masses. It’s easy for us to assume freedom, and not recognize that there are people all around us who are limited and bounded even in so-called “free” societies.

God and the Pandemic: An Interview with N.T. Wright

N.T. WrightHow are we supposed to think biblically about the coronavirus crisis? Is it a sign of the end of the world? Is it a call for repentance? Is God judging the world? What should be our approach drawing on Scripture, Christian history, and the way of living, thinking, and praying revealed to us by Jesus?

Bible Gateway interviewed N.T. Wright (@profntwright) about his book, God and the Pandemic: A Christian Reflection on the Coronavirus and its Aftermath (Zondervan, 2020). (Some answers below are reflective of his interview provided by the Jesus Creed blog.)

You wrote a short article on COVID-19 for TIME magazine, the title of which was “Christianity Offers No Answers About the Coronavirus. It’s Not Supposed To.”

N.T. Wright: That was the TIME editor’s title. It wasn’t inaccurate, in that I was saying that Christianity does NOT say ‘This proves the Rapture is imminent’ or ‘this shows that we need to repent of [fill in your pet peeve]. Those were the ‘answers’ people were offering, and I was saying ‘no, we don’t get that kind of thing.’ But clearly the editor was being provocative.

How Does God Redeem Our Feelings?: An Interview with David A. Covington

David A. CovingtonWhat does the Bible say about art? What is a biblical, systematic, and practical theology of aesthetics? What is the scriptural teaching about the passions that motivate us? How were we made for God’s delight? And, though sin and bondage plague our passions, how does God shape our fun, feelings, desires, and affections?

Bible Gateway interviewed David A. Covington about his book, A Redemptive Theology of Art: Restoring Godly Aesthetics to Doctrine and Culture (Zondervan, 2018).

What are godly aesthetics?

David A. Covington: God enjoys his own beautiful glory, so he also enjoys the reflection of his glory in his creation (“…behold, it was very good” Gen 1:31). He expresses revulsion, wrath, sorrow at that which twists, perverts, trammels the glory he loves. We see godly aesthetics at work when God’s delights and disgusts get worked back into his people (Matt 25:21).
