How Do I Know When It Is Wise to Give?

John TownsendBy Dr. John Townsend

A care relationship is one in which you are providing good for those who are without. Look at care as the inverse of coaching. When you are coached, you are the one in need. When you provide care to someone, they are the one in need.

Care is not about you or your needs or your struggles. However, in the way God has designed life and the brain, you do receive something back at a very deep and meaningful level. “If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday” (Isa. 58:10).

You’ve been working with men for decades. Why is it so difficult to be a man in today’s world (as opposed to decades ago)?

Patrick Morley: It’s true. These really are turbulent times to be a man. Most of the Christian men I talk to find it increasingly difficult to juggle all their responsibilities as men, husbands, fathers, friends, workers, churchmen, and citizens. As my friend Nick put it, “It feels almost impossible to live out a biblical model of manhood.” So why is that?

How the Story of the Bible is Incredibly Unfair

Michael and Lauren McAfeeBy Michael and Lauren McAfee

When I (Michael) was in the eighth grade, one of my favorite classes was art. Not necessarily because I was a young da Vinci. I was more like a young Picasso, but no one seemed to appreciate my, um, unique perspective. Art class became a relaxing hour to decompress and express myself, in part because my art teacher had a unique way to keep middle schoolers quiet and focused. While we painted, drew, or sculpted, he would read to us. In eighth grade we read Moby Dick. Herman Melville’s epic tale of Ahab, Ishmael, and the great white whale made a lasting impression on me. There was a certain sense of fairness that resonated in the story, about a man obsessed who ultimately was overcome by his obsession.

5 Clever Bible Gateway Plus Tricks

PERSON'S NAME

If you’re a Bible Gateway Plus member, you know many valuable resources are available to you. Here are 5 quick tricks to make it easier to find what you’re looking for and get the most out of the service. If you’re new to Bible Gateway Plus, you can find out more about it here.

1. How to Find “Gospel Awakening” Sermons in Bible Gateway Plus

You probably know there are sections in the “Study This” sidebar for different types of resources. You’ll see Study Bible notes at the top, followed by Encyclopedias, Commentaries, Dictionaries, even Maps; but there’s a harder-to-find section for Sermons that sometimes appears at the bottom.

People who stumble on these “Gospel Awakening” sermons by Dwight L. Moody are excited to find such a gem buried in the sidebar. Our intention isn’t to hide them. It’s just that they appear via the same chapter-verse structure as everything else. So, if a sermon happens to be about Genesis 3:9, it will appear only when you perform a search that includes that verse.

If you’re interested in reading D. L. Moody sermons, here’s a cheat sheet for where to find all of them and what verses they’re linked to. Simply paste a verse from that list into the Bible Gateway search bar, and scroll to the bottom of the sidebar where you’ll see the Sermon section.

Dr. Ogilvie was pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, for more than 20 years (1972–1995), until he was elected the 61st Chaplain of the United States Senate in 1995, “a responsibility he carried out with excellence for eight years,” according to Fuller Seminary, where the Lloyd John Ogilvie Institute of Preaching was established in 2006. “In addition to opening the Senate each day in prayer, he counseled senators and their families, met with them about spiritual and moral issues, led and participated in multiple Bible study and prayer groups, and encouraged the weekly Senate Prayer Breakfast. ‘I saw my role,’ he said, ‘to be an intercessor for the members of the Senate family, a trusted prayer partner, and a faithful counselor to them as they sought to know and do God’s will in the monumental responsibilities entrusted to them.’” He ministered in the Senate through many significant events including the terrorist attacks on 9/11.
