Phinehas, Eleazar’s son, comes third in glory, since he was on fire with the fear of the Lord, and since he stood firm when the people turned away, in the goodness and readiness of his spirit; thus he secured reconciliation for Israel.
The Lord God saw and it pleased him not, and they were consumed in his wrathful indignation.
Only Moses and Aaron were more famous for their intense devotion to the Lord than Phinehas son of Eleazar. He brought about forgiveness for Israel's sin by standing firm in brave determination when everyone else was in rebellion.
Phinehas too, the son of Eleazar, was the courageous third of his line When, zealous for the God of all, he met the crisis of his people And, at the prompting of his noble heart, atoned for the children of Israel.
Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, ranks third in glory because of his zeal in the fear of the Lord, and for standing firm with noble courage of soul when the people refused to obey; and by so doing he made expiation for Israel.
