Sirach 1
Imprimir
Numerous and wonderful things have been given to us through the Law, the Prophets, and the other writings that followed them. For this reason, it is necessary to praise Israel for education and wisdom. It is also necessary not only for those who read them to gain understanding but also for those who love learning to be of service to strangers when they speak and write. Because of this, my grandfather, Jesus, who had devoted himself more and more to the reading of the Law, the Prophets, and the other ancestral scrolls, and had gained enough experience with them, was himself led to compose a work dealing with education and wisdom. His goal was that lovers of learning who were committed to education and wisdom should gain much more by living according to the Law. You are invited, therefore, to read with goodwill and attention and to be forgiving in cases where we seem less than perfect in translating some expressions, despite working hard on the translation. What was originally expressed in Hebrew does not have the same power when translated into another language. Not only in this case but even in the case of the Law, the Prophets, and the rest of the scrolls, there’s no small difference between the translation and their expression in their own language. In the thirty-eighth year of the rule of King Euergetes, after I had arrived in Egypt and stayed awhile, having found a copy of this scroll to contain no small amount of practical advice, I personally made it a high priority to apply speed and hard work to translating this very scroll. I worked skillfully and stayed up many nights to bring the scroll to completion in order to publish it for those living abroad, who want to become well educated, preparing their character to live by the Law. All wisdom comes from the Lord. It lives with him forever.
Who can count the grains of sand in the seas, the drops of rain, or the days of eternity?
Who can discover heaven’s height, the earth’s breadth, the abyss, or wisdom?
Wisdom was created before everything else. Right understanding is as old as eternity.
To whom was Wisdom’s root revealed? Who knew her wonderful feats?
There is one who is wise, greatly feared, seated upon his throne.
The Lord himself created her; he saw her; he measured her. The Lord poured her out over everything he made, to be with each person to the extent that God grants, and he supplied her abundantly to those who love him.
Fear of the Lord is a person’s glory, boasting, gladness, and crown of rejoicing.
Fear of the Lord will cheer the heart, and it will give gladness, joy, and a long life.
Things will go well at the end for those who fear the Lord. They will be blessed at the time of death.
Wisdom starts with fearing the Lord, and she is joined to the faithful even within the womb.
Wisdom built her nest among human beings as an eternal foundation, and they will entrust their offspring to her.
Wisdom is fully satisfied with fearing the Lord, and she will make people drunk with her fruits.
She will fill all their houses with desirable things and fill their storehouses from her produce.
Fearing the Lord is Wisdom’s crowning garland, sprouting forth peace and restorative health.
She rained down skill and insightful knowledge, and she raised up the reputation of those who held on to her.
Fearing the Lord is Wisdom’s root, and her branches yield a long life.
Unjust anger won’t be justified, for the tipping point of one’s anger is one’s downfall.
Patient people will hold themselves back until the right moment, and afterward they will be paid back with joy.
They will hide their words until the right moment, and many will talk about their good judgment.
There are intelligent proverbs in Wisdom’s treasuries, but sinners avoid godliness like the plague.
If you want to find Wisdom, then keep the commandments, and the Lord will supply her to you in vast quantities.
Fearing the Lord brings wisdom and education. He is pleased with faithfulness and gentleness.
Don’t disobey the fear of the Lord, and don’t approach him with a divided heart.
Don’t give people reason to call you a hypocrite, and pay attention to what you say.
Don’t exalt yourself, or else you might fall and bring dishonor to yourself. The Lord will reveal your secrets, and he will overthrow you in the middle of the congregation, because you didn’t come with proper regard for the Lord and your heart was full of insincerity.
The knowledge of many and great things hath been shewn us by the law, and the prophets, and others that have followed them: for which things Israel is to be commended for doctrine and wisdom, because not only they that speak must needs be skillful, but strangers also, both speaking and writing, may by their means become most learned. My grandfather Jesus, after he had much given himself to a diligent reading of the law, and the prophets, and other books, that were delivered to us from our fathers, had a mind also to write something himself, pertaining to doctrine and wisdom: that such as are desirous to learn, and are made knowing in these things, may be more and more attentive in mind, and be strengthened to live according to the law. I entreat you therefore to come with benevolence, and to read with attention, and to pardon us for those things wherein we may seem, while we follow the image of wisdom, to come short in the composition of words; for the Hebrew words have not the same force in them when translated into another tongue. And not only these, but the law also itself, and the prophets, and the rest of the books, have no small difference, when they are spoken in their own language. For in the eight and thirtieth year coming into Egypt, when Ptolemy Evergetes was king, and continuing there a long time, I found there books left, of no small nor contemptible learning. Therefore I thought it good, and necessary for me to bestow some diligence and labour to interpret this book; and with much watching and study in some space of time, I brought the book to an end, and set it forth for the service of them that are willing to apply their mind, and to learn how they ought to conduct themselves, who purpose to lead their life according to the law of the Lord. All wisdom is from the Lord God, and hath been always with him, and is before all time.
Who hath numbered the sand of the sea, and the drops of rain, and the days of the world? Who hath measured the height of heaven, and the breadth of the earth, and the depth of the abyss?
Who hath searched out the wisdom of God that goeth before all things?
Wisdom hath been created before all things, and the understanding of prudence from everlasting.
The word of God on high is the fountain of wisdom, and her ways are everlasting commandments.
To whom hath the root of wisdom been revealed, and who hath known her wise counsels?
To whom hath the discipline of wisdom been revealed and made manifest? and who hath understood the multiplicity of her steps?
There is one most high Creator Almighty, and a powerful king, and greatly to be feared, who sitteth upon his throne, and is the God of dominion.
He created her in the Holy Ghost, and saw her, and numbered her, and measured her.
And he poured her out upon all his works, and upon all flesh according to his gift, and hath given her to them that love him.
The fear of the Lord is honour, and glory, and gladness, and a crown of joy.
The fear of the Lord shall delight the heart, and shall give joy, and gladness, and length of days.
With him that feareth the Lord, it shall go well in the latter end, and in the day of his death he shall be blessed.
The love of God is honourable wisdom.
And they to whom she shall shew herself love her by the sight, and by the knowledge of her great works.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and was created with the faithful in the womb, it walketh with chosen women, and is known with the just and faithful.
The fear of the Lord is the religiousness of knowledge.
Religiousness shall keep and justify the heart, it shall give joy and gladness.
It shall go well with him that feareth the Lord, and in the days of his end he shall be blessed.
To fear God is the fulness of wisdom, and fulness is from the fruits thereof.
She shall fill all her house with her increase, and the storehouses with her treasures.
The fear of the Lord is a crown of wisdom, filling up peace and the fruit of salvation:
And it hath seen, and numbered her: but both are the gifts of God.
Wisdom shall distribute knowledge, and understanding of prudence: and exalteth the glory of them that hold her.
The root of wisdom is to fear the Lord: and the branches thereof are longlived.
In the treasures of wisdom is understanding, and religiousness of knowledge: but to sinners wisdom is an abomination.
The fear of the Lord driveth out sin:
For he that is without fear, cannot be justified: for the wrath of his high spirits is his ruin.
A patient man shall bear for a time, and afterwards joy shall be restored to him.
A good understanding will hide his words for a time, and the lips of many shall declare his wisdom.
In the treasures of wisdom is the signification of discipline:
But the worship of God is an abomination to a sinner.
Son, if thou desire wisdom, keep justice, and God will give her to thee.
For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and discipline: and that which is agreeable to him,
Is faith, and meekness: and he will fill up his treasures.
Be not incredulous to the fear of the Lord: and come not to him with a double heart.
Be not a hypocrite in the sight of men, and let not thy lips be a stumblingblock to thee.
Watch over them, lest thou fall, and bring dishonour upon thy soul,
And God discover thy secrets, and cast thee down in the midst of the congregation.
Because thou camest to the Lord wickedly, and thy heart is full of guile and deceit.
The Law, the Prophets, and the later writers have left us a wealth of valuable teachings, and we should praise Israel for the instruction and wisdom they provide. But it is not enough that those who read them should gain understanding for themselves. Anyone who values learning should be able to help others by what he himself says and writes. That is why my grandfather Jesus devoted himself to reading the Law, the Prophets, and the other books of our ancestors. After he had mastered them, he was led to write a book of his own in order to share his wisdom and learning with others, so that anyone who shared his love for learning should have his book available as well, and be all the more able to live according to the Law. Let me urge you, then, to read this book carefully and with an open mind. And please be patient in those places where, in spite of all my diligent efforts, I may not have translated some phrases vry well. What was originally written in Hebrew does not always have exactly the same sense when it is translated into another language. That is true not only of this book, but even of the Law itself, the Prophets, and the other books. The translations differ quite a bit from the original. I came to Egypt in the thirty-eighth year of King Euergetes' reign and stayed for some time. While I was there, I had the opportunity for a good deal of study and felt the necessity of translating the following book. I wanted to use all my diligence and skill to complete it and make it available for all those living in foreign lands who wish to learn and who have the strength of character to live by the Law of Moses. All wisdom comes from the Lord, and Wisdom is with him forever.
Who can count raindrops or the sand along the shore? Who can count the days of eternity?
How high is the sky? How wide is the earth? How deep is the ocean? How profound is Wisdom? Can anyone find answers to these questions?
Wisdom was created before anything else; understanding has always existed.
Has anyone ever been shown where Wisdom originates? Does anyone understand her subtle cleverness?
There is only one who is wise, and we must stand in awe before his throne.
The Lord himself created Wisdom; he saw her and recognized her value, and so he filled everything he made with Wisdom.
He gave some measure of Wisdom to everyone, but poured her out on those who love him.
If you fear the Lord, honor and pride will be yours; you will be crowned with happiness and joy.
To honor the Lord is a heartfelt delight; it will give you a long and happy life,
and at the end of your days all will go well for you. God will bless you on the day of your death.
To fear the Lord is the first step to Wisdom. Wisdom is given to the faithful in their mothers' wombs.
She has lived with us from ancient times, and generations to come will rely on her.
To fear the Lord is Wisdom at her fullest; she satisfies us completely with her gifts
and fills our homes and our barns with all that our hearts can desire.
To fear the Lord is the flower of Wisdom that blossoms with peace and good health.
She sends knowledge and understanding like the rain, and increases the honor of those who receive her.
To fear the Lord is the root of Wisdom; her branches are long life.
There is no excuse for unjustified anger; it can bring about your downfall.
Wait and be patient, and later you will be glad you did.
Keep quiet until the right time to speak, and you will gain a reputation for good sense.
Wisdom has a treasury of wise sayings, but sinners have nothing but contempt for godliness.
If you want to be wise, keep the Lord's commands, and he will give you Wisdom in abundance.
Fearing the Lord is Wisdom and an education in itself. He is pleased by loyalty and humility.
Be faithful in the practice of your religion; when you worship the Lord, do it with all your heart.
Be careful about what you say, and don't be a hypocrite.
Don't be arrogant; you may suffer a fall and be disgraced. The Lord will reveal your secrets and humble you in front of everyone in the synagogue, because you did not come there with reverence for the Lord, but with a heart full of hypocrisy.
Inasmuch as many and great truths have been given to us through the Law, the prophets, and the authors who followed them, for which the instruction and wisdom of Israel merit praise, it is the duty of those who read the scriptures not only to become knowledgeable themselves but also to use their love of learning in speech and in writing to help others less familiar. So my grandfather Jesus, who had long devoted himself to the study of the law, the prophets, and the rest of the books of our ancestors, and had acquired great familiarity with them, was moved to write something himself regarding instruction and wisdom. He did this so that those who love learning might, by accepting what he had written, make even greater progress in living according to the Law. You are invited therefore to read it with good will and attention, with indulgence for any failure on our part, despite earnest efforts, in the interpretation of particular passages. For words spoken originally in Hebrew do not have the same effect when they are translated into another language. That is true not only of this book but of the Law itself, the prophecies, and the rest of the books, which differ no little when they are read in the original. I arrived in Egypt in the thirty-eighth year of the reign of King Euergetes, and while there, I had access to no little learning. I therefore considered it my duty to devote some diligence and industry to the translation of this book. During this time I applied my skill for many sleepless hours to complete the book and publish it for those living abroad who wish to acquire learning and are disposed to live their lives according to the Law. All wisdom is from the Lord and remains with him forever.
The sands of the sea, the drops of rain, the days of eternity—who can count them?
Heaven’s height, earth’s extent, the abyss and wisdom—who can explore them?
Before all other things wisdom was created; and prudent understanding, from eternity.
The root of wisdom—to whom has it been revealed? Her subtleties—who knows them?
There is but one, wise and truly awesome, seated upon his throne—the Lord.
It is he who created her, saw her and measured her, Poured her forth upon all his works,
upon every living thing according to his bounty, lavished her upon those who love him.
The fear of the Lord is glory and exultation, gladness and a festive crown.
The fear of the Lord rejoices the heart, giving gladness, joy, and long life.
Those who fear the Lord will be happy at the end, even on the day of death they will be blessed.
The beginning of wisdom is to fear the Lord; she is created with the faithful in the womb.
With the godly she was created from of old, and with their descendants she will keep faith.
The fullness of wisdom is to fear the Lord; she inebriates them with her fruits.
Their entire house she fills with choice foods, their granaries with her produce.
The crown of wisdom is the fear of the Lord, flowering with peace and perfect health.
Knowledge and full understanding she rains down; she heightens the glory of those who possess her.
The root of wisdom is to fear the Lord; her branches are long life.
The fear of the Lord drives away sins; where it abides it turns back all anger.
Unjust anger can never be justified; anger pulls a person to utter ruin.
Until the right time, the patient remain calm, then cheerfulness comes back to them.
Until the right time they hold back their words; then the lips of many will tell of their good sense.
Among wisdom’s treasures is the model for knowledge; but godliness is an abomination to the sinner.
If you desire wisdom, keep the commandments, and the Lord will bestow her upon you;
For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and discipline; faithfulness and humility are his delight.
Do not disobey the fear of the Lord, do not approach it with duplicity of heart.
Do not be a hypocrite before others; over your lips keep watch.
Do not exalt yourself lest you fall and bring dishonor upon yourself; For then the Lord will reveal your secrets and cast you down in the midst of the assembly. Because you did not approach the fear of the Lord, and your heart was full of deceit.
Many important teachings have come down to us through the Law and the Prophets and the other writers who succeeded them, and, as a result, praise is due to Israel for its traditions of learning and wisdom. It devolves upon those who read the Scriptures not only to understand them thoroughly but as lovers of learning to use their skill in writing and speaking to increase the knowledge of others. My grandfather Jesus, having devoted himself to the intensive reading of the Law and the Prophets and the other Writings of our ancestors, and having gained considerable proficiency in them, was inspired himself to compose some writings on the subject of learning and wisdom, in order that, by becoming familiar with what he had written, those who love learning might achieve even greater progress in living in conformity with the Law. Therefore, you are invited to read this attentively and with an open mind and to exhibit a spirit of understanding forgiveness when, despite the most diligent efforts in translation, I may seem to have rendered some passages inadequately. For words originally expressed in Hebrew do not have the same sense when translated into another language. Not only this present Book but even the Law itself, the Prophets, and the rest of the Books differ quite a bit when they are read in the original. When in the thirty-eighth year of the reign of King Euergetes I arrived in Egypt and set up my residence there, I discovered that the Book has great educational value, and I considered it essential to devote some energy and labor to its translation. During this period of time I have applied my skill day and night in working toward the completion of this Book and supervising its publication for the benefit of those living abroad who wish to acquire learning and are disposed to live their lives according to the Law. All wisdom derives from the Lord and remains with him forever.
The sands of the sea, the drops of rain, and the days of eternity—who can count them?
The height of the sky, the breadth of the earth, the depth of the abyss—who can explore them?
Wisdom was created before all other things; and prudent understanding has existed from eternity.
[ The fount of wisdom is God’s word in the highest heaven, and her ways are the eternal laws.]
To whom has the root of wisdom been revealed? Who understands her subtleties?
[ To whom has an understanding of wisdom been disclosed? And who has known her resourcefulness?]
Only one is wise and greatly to be feared, seated upon his throne—the Lord.
He is the one who created her, observed her, and recognized her value, and so poured her forth upon all his works,
upon all flesh as he chose, lavishing her upon those who love him. [The love of the Lord is glorious wisdom; he apportions her to those to whom he appears, that they may see him.]
The fear of the Lord is glory and exultation, happiness and a crown of joy.
The fear of the Lord gladdens the heart, bestowing happiness and joy and a long life. [The fear of the Lord is a gift from the Lord; also for love he makes firm paths.]
The one who fears the Lord will experience a happy end; he will be blessed on the day of his death.
The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord; she is created with the faithful in their mothers’ wombs.
She has made her home among men an age-old foundation, and among their descendants she will show her beneficence.
The fear of the Lord is the full measure of wisdom; she intoxicates people with her fruits.
She fills their homes with desirable goods and their storehouses with her fruits.
The crown of wisdom is the fear of the Lord as she bestows peace and perfect health. [Both are gifts of the Lord for peace; glory opens out for those who love him. He saw her and recognized her value.]
The Lord has seen and appraised her, showering down knowledge and discerning understanding and heightening the glory of those who possess her.
The root of wisdom is fear of the Lord, and her branches bring forth long life.
[ The fear of the Lord takes away sin, and he who perseveres turns away all anger.]
Unjustified anger can never be excused; anger will be the cause of a man’s downfall.
A patient man endures difficulties for a time, and then he regains his sense of contentment.
Until the appropriate moment he keeps his thoughts to himself, and then the lips of many affirm his wisdom.
The treasuries of wisdom contain wise maxims, but the fear of God is an abomination to the sinner.
If you desire wisdom, keep the commandments, and the Lord will lavish her upon you.
For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and discipline, fidelity and humility are his delight.
Do not disregard the fear of the Lord, or approach him with a divided heart.
Do not act out a role before others; keep careful watch over your lips.
Do not exalt yourself, lest you fall and bring dishonor upon yourself. For then the Lord will reveal your secrets and overthrow you before the whole community, since you did not practice the fear of the Lord and your heart was full of deceit.

So my grandfather Jesus, who had devoted himself especially to the reading of the Law and the Prophets and the other books of our ancestors and had acquired considerable proficiency in them, was himself also led to write something pertaining to instruction and wisdom, so that by becoming familiar also with his book those who love learning might make even greater progress in living according to the law. You are invited, therefore, to read it with goodwill and attention and to be indulgent in cases where we may seem to have rendered some phrases imperfectly, despite our diligent labor in translating. For what was originally expressed in Hebrew does not have exactly the same effect when translated into another language. Not only this book, but even the Law itself, the Prophets, and the rest of the books differ not a little when read in the original. In the thirty-eighth year of the reign of Euergetes, when I came to Egypt and stayed for some time, I found a copy affording no little instruction. It seemed highly necessary that I should myself devote some diligence and labor to the translation of this book. During that time I have applied my skill day and night to complete and publish the book for those living abroad who wish to gain learning and are preparing to live according to the law. All wisdom is from the Lord, and with him it remains forever.
The sand of the sea, the drops of rain, and the days of eternity—who can count them?
The height of heaven, the breadth of the earth, the abyss, and wisdom—who can search them out?
Wisdom was created before all things and prudent understanding from eternity.
The root of wisdom—to whom has it been revealed? Her subtleties—who knows them?
There is but one who is wise, greatly to be feared, seated upon his throne: the Lord.
It is he who created her; he saw her and took her measure; he poured her out upon all his works,
upon all the living according to his gift; he lavished her upon those who love him.
The fear of the Lord is glory and exultation and gladness and a crown of rejoicing.
The fear of the Lord delights the heart and gives gladness and joy and long life.
Those who fear the Lord will have a happy end; on the day of their death they will be blessed.
To fear the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; she is created with the faithful in the womb.
She made among humans an eternal foundation, and among their descendants she will abide faithfully.
To fear the Lord is fullness of wisdom; she inebriates mortals with her fruits;
she fills their whole house with desirable goods and their storehouses with her produce.
The fear of the Lord is the crown of wisdom, making peace and perfect health to flourish.
She rained down knowledge and discerning comprehension, and she heightened the glory of those who held her fast.
To fear the Lord is the root of wisdom, and her branches are long life.
Unjust anger cannot be justified, for anger tips the scale to one’s ruin.
Those who are patient stay calm until the right moment, and then cheerfulness comes back to them.
They hold back their words until the right moment, and then the lips of many tell of their good sense.
In the treasuries of wisdom is insightful analogy, but godliness is an abomination to a sinner.
If you desire wisdom, keep the commandments, and the Lord will lavish her upon you.
For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and discipline; fidelity and humility are his delight.
Do not disobey the fear of the Lord; do not approach him with a divided mind.
Do not be a hypocrite before others, and keep watch over your lips.
Do not exalt yourself, or you may fall and bring dishonor upon yourself. The Lord will reveal your secrets and overthrow you before the whole congregation, because you did not come in the fear of the Lord, and your heart was full of deceit.

All wisdom is of (or from) the Lord God, and was ever with him, and is before the world.
Who numbered the gravel of the sea, and the drops of rain, and the days of the world?
Who measured the highness [or the height] of heaven, and the breadth of (the) earth, and the depth of the sea? Who ensearched (or searched for) the wisdom of God, that goeth before all things?
Wisdom was formed first of all things, and the understanding of prudence, from the world, that is, from without beginning.
The well of wisdom is the son of God in high things; and the entering of that wisdom is (the) everlasting commandments. [The well of wisdom (is) the word of God in heights; and the in-going of it (is) everlasting commandments.]
To whom was the root of wisdom showed? and who knew the subtleties thereof?
To whom was the lore [or the discipline] of wisdom showed, and made open? and who understood the multiplying of the entering thereof, that is, of the work thereof?
One is the highest Creator of all things, almighty, and a mighty king, and worthy to be dreaded full much (or greatly to be feared and revered), sitting on the throne of that wisdom, and God having lordship. [One is the highest maker (out) of nought of all things, almighty, and a mighty king, and worthy to be dreaded full much, sitting upon the throne of him, and God lordshipping.]
He formed it in the Holy Ghost, and he saw, and numbered, and he measured (it). And he shedded out it on all his works, [He formed it in the Holy Ghost, and he saw, and distinctly numbered, and measured; and poured out it upon all his works,]
and on each flesh by his gift; he giveth it to them that love him. [and upon all flesh after his gift; he giveth it to men loving itself.]
The dread of the Lord is glory, and glorying [or joying], and gladness, and a crown of full out joying.
The dread of the Lord shall delight the heart; and shall give gladness and joy into [the] length of days.
To him that dreadeth God, it shall be well in the last things, or in the last days, [or in the last ends]; and he shall be blessed in the day of his death. Forsooth they to whom wisdom appeareth in sight, that is, by (the) revelation of prophecy, love it in sight, and in (the) knowing of his great things [or To whom forsooth it shall appear in sight, they love it in (the) seeing (of it), and in (the) knowing of his great things]. The love of God is honourable wisdom.
The beginning of wisdom is the dread of the Lord; and it is formed together in the womb with faithful men, and it goeth with chosen women, and it is known with just men and faithful. [The beginning of wisdom dread of the Lord; and with faithful men in the womb he is together formed, and with chosen women he goeth, and with rightwise and faithful men he is known.]
The dread of the Lord is religiosity of cunning (or of knowing, or of knowledge). Religiosity shall keep, and shall justify the heart; and shall give mirth and joy. It shall be well to him that dreadeth God; and he shall be blessed in the days of his comfort [or and in the days of (the) ending of him he shall be blessed].
The fullness of wisdom is for to dread God; and fullness is of the fruits thereof.
It shall fill each gift of him of (or for) generations, and (the) receipts of (or the receptacles with) the treasures thereof. [Each house of him it shall fulfill from generations, and the receiving places from the treasures of him.]
The crown of wisdom is the dread of the Lord, and filleth peace [or fulfilling peace], and the fruit of health. And he saw, and numbered it; forsooth ever either be the gifts of God.
Wisdom shall part the cunning (or the knowing) and understanding of prudence; and it enhanceth the glory of them, that hold it.
The root of wisdom is for to dread God; forsooth the branches thereof be long (en)during [or The root of wisdom is to dread God; the branches forsooth of it long living]. Understanding and religiosity of cunning (or of knowing) be in the treasures of wisdom; but wisdom is abomination to sinners.
The dread of the Lord putteth away sin, for he that is without dread of God, may not be justified [or shall not be able to be justified];
for why the wrathfulness of his pride [or of (his) willfulness] is the destroying of him.
A patient man shall suffer the dis-eases of a proud man till into (a) time; and afterward there shall be yielding of mirth. [Unto (a) time the patient shall suffer; and afterward is yielding again of full mirth.]
Good wit shall hide the words of him till into a time; and the lips of many men shall tell out the wit of him.
In the treasures of wisdom is signifying of cunning (or of knowing); but the worshipping of God is abomination to a sinner. [In the treasures of wisdom is tokening of discipline; cursing forsooth to the sinner is the praising of God.]
A! (O!) son, coveting wisdom, keep thou rightfulness [or keep rightwiseness], and God shall give it to thee.
For why the dread of the Lord is wisdom, and cunning, (or knowing), and that that is well pleasant (or well-pleasing) to him is faith and mildness (or meekness); and God shall fill the treasures of him. [Wisdom forsooth and discipline the dread of the Lord, and that well-pleased is to him, faith and debonairness; and it shall full-fill the treasures of him.]
Be thou not rebel(lious), and unbelieveful to the dread of the Lord; and nigh (or approach) thou not to him in (a) double heart. [Be thou not rebel, and mis-believeful to the dread of the Lord; and not nigh thou to him with double heart.]
Be thou not an hypocrite in the sight of men; and be thou not slandered in (or caused to stumble by) thy lips.
Take thou keep (or care) to those (things), lest thou fall, and bring dishonor to thy soul; and lest God show thy privates (or thy secrets), and hurtle thee down in the midst of the synagogue, that is, of (the) gathering together of faithful men; for thou nighedest (or approachedest) wickedly to the Lord, and thine heart was full of guile and of falseness. [Take heed in those things, lest peradventure thou fall, and bring to thy soul unworshipping; and God openeth in hid things, and in the middle of the synagogue he hurtle thee; for thou nighedest (or approachedest) maliciously to the Lord, and thine heart is full of treachery and deceit.]
