1 Maccabees 16:22
When he heard this news, he was greatly shocked. He detained the men who had come to destroy him and killed them because he had learned about their intentions.
But when he heard it he was exceedingly afraid: and he apprehended the men that came to kill him, and he put them to death: for he knew that they sought to take him away.
John was horrified at this news, but, because he had been warned in advance, he was able to capture and put to death the men who had been sent to kill him.
On hearing this, John was utterly astounded. When the men came to kill him, he seized them and put them to death, for he knew that they sought to kill him.
