Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
You Are My Refuge
A Maskil[a] of David, when he was in (A)the cave. A Prayer.
142 With my voice I (B)cry out to the Lord;
with my voice I (C)plead for mercy to the Lord.
2 I (D)pour out my complaint before him;
I tell my trouble before him.
3 When my spirit (E)faints within me,
you know my way!
In the path where I walk
they have (F)hidden a trap for me.
4 (G)Look to the (H)right and see:
(I)there is none who takes notice of me;
(J)no refuge remains to me;
no one cares for my soul.
5 I cry to you, O Lord;
I say, “You are my (K)refuge,
my (L)portion in (M)the land of the living.”
6 (N)Attend to my cry,
for (O)I am brought very low!
Deliver me from my persecutors,
(P)for they are too strong for me!
7 (Q)Bring me out of prison,
that I may give thanks to your name!
The righteous will surround me,
for you will (R)deal bountifully with me.
Habakkuk's Prayer
3 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, according to Shigionoth.
2 O Lord, (A)I have heard the report of you,
and (B)your work, O Lord, do I fear.
In the midst of the years (C)revive it;
in the midst of the years make it known;
(D)in wrath remember mercy.
3 God came from (E)Teman,
(F)and the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah
His splendor covered the heavens,
and the earth was full of his praise.
4 (G)His brightness was like the light;
rays flashed from his hand;
and there he veiled his power.
5 (H)Before him went pestilence,
and plague followed (I)at his heels.[a]
6 He stood (J)and measured the earth;
he looked and shook the nations;
then the (K)eternal mountains (L)were scattered;
the everlasting hills sank low.
His were (M)the everlasting ways.
7 I saw the tents of (N)Cushan in affliction;
(O)the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble.
8 (P)Was your wrath against the rivers, O Lord?
Was your anger against the rivers,
(Q)or your indignation against the sea,
(R)when you rode on your horses,
(S)on your chariot of salvation?
9 You stripped the sheath from your bow,
calling for many arrows.[b] Selah
(T)You split the earth with rivers.
10 (U)The mountains saw you and writhed;
the raging waters swept on;
(V)the deep gave forth its voice;
(W)it lifted its hands on high.
11 (X)The sun and moon stood still in their place
(Y)at the light of your arrows as they sped,
at the flash of your glittering spear.
12 (Z)You marched through the earth in fury;
(AA)you threshed the nations in anger.
13 (AB)You went out for the salvation of your people,
for the salvation of (AC)your anointed.
(AD)You crushed the head of the house of the wicked,
laying him bare from thigh to neck.[c] Selah
14 You pierced with his own arrows the heads of his warriors,
who came like a whirlwind to scatter me,
rejoicing as if to devour the poor in secret.
15 (AE)You trampled the sea with your horses,
the surging of mighty waters.
5 Now I want (A)to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that (B)Jesus, who saved[a] a people out of the land of Egypt, (C)afterward destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And (D)the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— 7 just as (E)Sodom and Gomorrah and (F)the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and (G)pursued unnatural desire,[b] serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.
8 Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and (H)blaspheme the glorious ones. 9 But when (I)the archangel (J)Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing (K)about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, (L)“The Lord rebuke you.” 10 (M)But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. 11 Woe to them! For they walked in (N)the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain (O)to Balaam's error and (P)perished in Korah's rebellion. 12 These are hidden reefs[c] (Q)at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, (R)shepherds feeding themselves; (S)waterless clouds, (T)swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, (U)uprooted; 13 (V)wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of (W)their own shame; (X)wandering stars, (Y)for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.
14 It was also about these that Enoch, (Z)the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, (AA)“Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15 (AB)to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have (AC)committed in such an ungodly way, and of all (AD)the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” 16 These are grumblers, malcontents, (AE)following their own sinful desires; (AF)they are loud-mouthed boasters, (AG)showing favoritism to gain advantage.
A Call to Persevere
17 But you must (AH)remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18 They[d] said to you, (AI)“In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, (AJ)devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved, (AK)building yourselves up in your most holy faith and (AL)praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 (AM)keep yourselves in the love of God, (AN)waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.
