Psalm 11

Psalm 11[a]

For the music director, by David.

11 In the Lord I have taken shelter.[b]
How can you say to me,[c]
“Flee to a mountain like a bird.[d]
For look, the wicked[e] prepare[f] their bows,[g]
they put their arrows on the strings,
to shoot in the darkness[h] at the morally upright.[i]
When the foundations[j] are destroyed,
what can the godly[k] accomplish?”[l]
The Lord is in his holy temple;[m]
the Lord’s throne is in heaven.[n]
His eyes[o] watch;[p]
his eyes[q] examine[r] all people.[s]
The Lord approves of[t] the godly,[u]
but he[v] hates[w] the wicked and those who love to do violence.[x]
May he rain down[y] burning coals[z] and brimstone[aa] on the wicked!
A whirlwind is what they deserve.[ab]
Certainly[ac] the Lord is just;[ad]
he rewards godly deeds.[ae]
The upright will experience his favor.[af]

Isaiah 24:14-23

14 They[a] lift their voices and shout joyfully;
they praise[b] the majesty of the Lord in the west.
15 So in the east[c] extol the Lord,
along the seacoasts extol[d] the fame[e] of the Lord God of Israel.
16 From the ends of the earth we[f] hear songs—
the Just One is majestic.[g]
But I[h] say, “I’m wasting away! I’m wasting away! I’m doomed!
Deceivers deceive, deceivers thoroughly deceive!”[i]
17 Terror, pit, and snare
are ready to overtake, you inhabitants of the earth![j]
18 The one who runs away from the sound of the terror
will fall into the pit;[k]
the one who climbs out of the pit
will be trapped by the snare.
For the floodgates of the heavens[l] are opened up[m]
and the foundations of the earth shake.
19 The earth is broken in pieces,
the earth is ripped to shreds,
the earth shakes violently.[n]
20 The earth will stagger around[o] like a drunk;
it will sway back and forth like a hut in a windstorm.[p]
Its sin will weigh it down,
and it will fall and never get up again.

The Lord Will Become King

21 At that time[q] the Lord will punish[r]
the heavenly forces in the heavens[s]
and the earthly kings on the earth.
22 They will be imprisoned in a pit,[t]
locked up in a prison,
and after staying there for a long time,[u] they will be punished.[v]
23 The full moon will be covered up,[w]
the bright sun[x] will be darkened;[y]
for the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will rule[z]
on Mount Zion in Jerusalem
in the presence of his assembly, in majestic splendor.[aa]

Luke 12:41-48

41 Then[a] Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for everyone?”[b] 42 The Lord replied,[c] “Who then is the faithful and wise manager,[d] whom the master puts in charge of his household servants,[e] to give them their allowance of food at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that slave[f] whom his master finds at work[g] when he returns. 44 I tell you the truth,[h] the master[i] will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But if[j] that[k] slave should say to himself,[l] ‘My master is delayed[m] in returning,’ and he begins to beat[n] the other[o] slaves, both men and women,[p] and to eat, drink, and get drunk, 46 then the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not foresee, and will cut him in two,[q] and assign him a place with the unfaithful.[r] 47 That[s] servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or do what his master asked[t] will receive a severe beating. 48 But the one who did not know his master’s will[u] and did things worthy of punishment[v] will receive a light beating.[w] From everyone who has been given much, much will be required,[x] and from the one who has been entrusted with much,[y] even more will be asked.[z]
