Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
The Holy Spirit and the Day of Pentecost
2 Now[a] when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly[b] a sound[c] like a violent wind blowing[d] came from heaven[e] and filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And tongues spreading out like a fire[f] appeared to them and came to rest on each one of them. 4 All[g] of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languages[h] as the Spirit enabled them.[i]
5 Now there were devout Jews[j] from every nation under heaven residing in Jerusalem.[k] 6 When this sound[l] occurred, a crowd gathered and was in confusion,[m] because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 Completely baffled, they said,[n] “Aren’t[o] all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that each one of us hears them[p] in our own native language?[q] 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and the province of Asia,[r] 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene,[s] and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes,[t] Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own languages about the great deeds God has done!”[u] 12 All were astounded and greatly confused, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others jeered at the speakers,[v] saying, “They are drunk on new wine!”[w]
Peter’s Address on the Day of Pentecost
14 But Peter stood up[x] with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed them: “You men of Judea[y] and all you who live in Jerusalem, know this[z] and listen carefully to what I say. 15 In spite of what you think, these men are not drunk,[aa] for it is only nine o’clock in the morning.[ab] 16 But this is what was spoken about through the prophet Joel:[ac]
17 ‘And in the last days[ad] it will be,’ God says,
‘that I will pour out my Spirit on all people,[ae]
and your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
and your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants,[af] both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.[ag]
19 And I will perform wonders in the sky[ah] above
and miraculous signs[ai] on the earth below,
blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
20 The sun will be changed to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the great and glorious[aj] day of the Lord comes.
21 And then[ak] everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’[al]
The Dispersion of the Nations at Babel
11 The whole earth[a] had a common language and a common vocabulary.[b] 2 When the people[c] moved eastward,[d] they found a plain in Shinar[e] and settled there. 3 Then they said to one another,[f] “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.”[g] (They had brick instead of stone and tar[h] instead of mortar.)[i] 4 Then they said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens[j] so that[k] we may make a name for ourselves. Otherwise[l] we will be scattered[m] across the face of the entire earth.”
5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the people[n] had started[o] building. 6 And the Lord said, “If as one people all sharing a common language[p] they have begun to do this, then[q] nothing they plan to do will be beyond them.[r] 7 Come, let’s go down and confuse[s] their language so they won’t be able to understand each other.”[t]
8 So the Lord scattered them from there across the face of the entire earth, and they stopped building[u] the city. 9 That is why its name was called[v] Babel[w]—because there the Lord confused the language of the entire world, and from there the Lord scattered them across the face of the entire earth.
24 How many living things you have made, O Lord![a]
You have exhibited great skill in making all of them;[b]
the earth is full of the living things you have made.
25 Over here is the deep, wide sea,[c]
which teems with innumerable swimming creatures,[d]
living things both small and large.
26 The ships travel there,
and over here swims the whale[e] you made to play in it.
27 All your creatures[f] wait for you
to provide them with food on a regular basis.[g]
28 You give food to them and they receive it;
you open your hand and they are filled with food.[h]
29 When you ignore them, they panic.[i]
When you take away their life’s breath,
they die and return to dust.
30 When you send your life-giving breath, they are created,
and you replenish the surface of the ground.
31 May the splendor of the Lord endure.[j]
May the Lord find pleasure in the living things he has made.[k]
32 He looks down on the earth and it shakes;
he touches the mountains and they start to smolder.
33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I exist.[l]
34 May my thoughts[m] be pleasing to him.
I will rejoice in the Lord.
35 May sinners disappear[a] from the earth,
and the wicked vanish.
Praise the Lord, O my soul.
Praise the Lord.
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are[a] the sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery leading again to fear,[b] but you received the Spirit of adoption,[c] by whom[d] we cry, “Abba,[e] Father.” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness to[f] our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 And if children, then heirs (namely, heirs of God and also fellow heirs with Christ)[g]—if indeed we suffer with him so we may also be glorified with him.
17 ‘And in the last days[ad] it will be,’ God says,

and your old men will dream dreams.
8 Philip said,[a] “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be content.”[b] 9 Jesus replied,[c] “Have I been with you for so long, and you have not known[d] me, Philip? The person who has seen me has seen the Father! How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me?[e] The words that I say to you, I do not speak on my own initiative,[f] but the Father residing in me performs[g] his miraculous deeds.[h] 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me, but if you do not believe me,[i] believe because of the miraculous deeds[j] themselves. 12 I tell you the solemn truth,[k] the person who believes in me will perform[l] the miraculous deeds[m] that I am doing,[n] and will perform[o] greater deeds[p] than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name,[q] so that the Father may be glorified[r] in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
Teaching on the Holy Spirit
15 “If you love me, you will obey[s] my commandments.[t] 16 Then[u] I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate[v] to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept,[w] because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he resides[x] with you and will be[y] in you.
25 “I have spoken these things while staying[a] with you. 26 But the Advocate,[b] the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you[c] everything,[d] and will cause you to remember everything[e] I said to you.
27 “Peace I leave with you;[f] my peace I give to you; I do not give it[g] to you as the world does.[h] Do not let your hearts be distressed or lacking in courage.[i]
