Psalm 29

Psalm 29

The Voice of the Lord

A psalm of David.

Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings,[a]
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord
in the splendor of his holiness.[b](A)

The voice of the Lord is above the waters.
The God of glory thunders—
the Lord, above the vast water,(B)
the voice of the Lord in power,
the voice of the Lord in splendor.(C)
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon.(D)
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,(E)
and Sirion, like a young wild ox.(F)
The voice of the Lord flashes flames of fire.(G)
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.(H)
The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth[c](I)
and strips the woodlands bare.(J)
In his temple all cry, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned, King forever.(K)
11 The Lord gives his people strength;(L)
the Lord blesses his people with peace.(M)

Ezekiel 3:12-21

12 The Spirit then lifted me up,(A) and I heard a loud rumbling sound behind me—bless the glory of the Lord in his place!— 13 with the[a] sound of the living creatures’ wings brushing against each other(B) and the sound of the wheels beside them,(C) a loud rumbling sound. 14 The Spirit lifted me up and took me away. I left in bitterness and in an angry spirit, and the Lord’s hand was on me powerfully.(D) 15 I came to the exiles at Tel-abib, who were living by the Chebar Canal, and I sat there among them stunned for seven days.(E)

Ezekiel as a Watchman

16 Now at the end of seven days the word of the Lord came to me:(F) 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman over the house of Israel.(G) When you hear a word from my mouth, give them a warning from me.(H) 18 If I say to the wicked person,(I) ‘You will surely die,’ but you do not warn him—you don’t speak out to warn him about his wicked way in order to save his life—that wicked person will die for his iniquity. Yet I will hold you responsible for his blood. 19 But if you warn a wicked person and he does not turn from his wickedness or his wicked way, he will die for his iniquity, but you will have rescued yourself.(J) 20 Now if a righteous person turns from his righteousness and acts unjustly,(K) and I put a stumbling block in front of him, he will die.(L) If you did not warn him, he will die because of his sin, and the righteous acts he did will not be remembered. Yet I will hold you responsible for his blood. 21 But if you warn the righteous person that he should not sin, and he does not sin, he will indeed live because he listened to your warning, and you will have rescued yourself.”

Luke 9:18-27

Peter’s Confession of the Messiah

18 While he was praying in private(A) and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”

19 They answered, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back.”[a](B)

20 “But you,” he asked them, “who do you say that I am?”

Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”(C)

His Death and Resurrection Predicted

21 But he strictly warned and instructed them to tell this to no one,(D) 22 saying,(E) “It is necessary that the Son of Man(F) suffer many things(G) and be rejected(H) by the elders, chief priests, and scribes,(I) be killed, and be raised the third day.”(J)

Take Up Your Cross

23 Then he said to them all, “If anyone wants to follow after[b] me, let him deny himself,(K) take up his cross daily,[c] and follow me.(L) 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will save it.(M) 25 For what does it benefit someone if he gains the whole world, and yet loses or forfeits himself?(N) 26 For whoever is ashamed of me and my words,(O) the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory(P) and that of the Father and the holy angels.(Q) 27 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death(R) until they see the kingdom of God.”(S)
