Psalm 93

God’s Eternal Reign

The Lord reigns! He is robed in majesty;
the Lord is robed, enveloped in strength.
The world is firmly established;
it cannot be shaken.(A)
Your throne has been established
from the beginning;[a]
you are from eternity.(B)
The floods have lifted up, Lord,
the floods have lifted up their voice;
the floods lift up their pounding waves.(C)
Greater than the roar of a huge torrent—
the mighty breakers of the sea—
the Lord on high is majestic.(D)

Lord, your testimonies are completely reliable;(E)
holiness adorns your house
for all the days to come.(F)

2 Chronicles 34:20-33

20 Then he commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Abdon son of Micah, the court secretary Shaphan, and the king’s servant Asaiah, 21 “Go and inquire of the Lord for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah, concerning the words of the book that was found. For great is the Lord’s wrath that is poured out on us(A) because our ancestors have not kept the word of the Lord in order to do everything written in this book.”

Huldah’s Prophecy of Judgment

22 So Hilkiah and those the king had designated[a] went to the prophetess Huldah, the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath, son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem in the Second District. They spoke with her about this.

23 She said to them, “This is what the Lord God of Israel says: Say to the man who sent you to me, 24 ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to bring disaster on this place and on its inhabitants,(B) fulfilling[b] all the curses written in the book that they read in the presence of the king of Judah,(C) 25 because they have abandoned me(D) and burned incense to other gods so as to anger me with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be poured out on this place, and it will not be quenched.’ 26 Say this to the king of Judah who sent you to inquire of the Lord: ‘This is what the Lord God of Israel says: As for the words that you heard, 27 because(E) your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this place and against its inhabitants, and because you humbled yourself before me, and you tore your clothes and wept before me, I myself have heard’—this is the Lord’s declaration. 28 ‘I will indeed gather you to your ancestors, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster that I am bringing on this place and on its inhabitants.’”(F)

Then they reported to the king.

Affirmation of the Covenant by Josiah and the People

29 So the king sent messengers and gathered all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 30 The king went up to the Lord’s temple with all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, as well as the priests and the Levites—all the people from the oldest to the youngest. He read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant that had been found in the Lord’s temple.(G) 31 Then the king stood at his post(H) and made a covenant in the Lord’s presence(I) to follow the Lord and to keep his commands, his decrees, and his statutes with all his heart and with all his soul(J) in order to carry out the words of the covenant written in this book.(K)

32 He had all those present in Jerusalem and Benjamin agree[c] to it. So all the inhabitants of Jerusalem carried out the covenant of God, the God of their ancestors.

33 So Josiah removed everything that was detestable from all the lands belonging to the Israelites,(L) and he required all who were present in Israel to serve the Lord their God. Throughout his reign they did not turn aside from following the Lord, the God of their ancestors.

Luke 2:25-38

Simeon’s Prophetic Praise

25 There was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout,(A) looking forward to Israel’s consolation,(B) and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit(C) that he would not see death before he saw the Lord’s Messiah.(D) 27 Guided by the Spirit, he entered the temple. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform for him what was customary under the law, 28 Simeon took him up in his arms, praised God, and said,

29 Now, Master,
you can dismiss your servant in peace,
as you promised.
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation.(E)
31 You have prepared it
in the presence of all peoples—
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles[a](F)
and glory to your people Israel.(G)

33 His father and mother[b] were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and told his mother Mary, “Indeed, this child is destined to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel(H) and to be a sign that will be opposed[c] 35 and a sword will pierce your own soul—that the thoughts[d] of many hearts may be revealed.”

Anna’s Testimony

36 There was also a prophetess,(I) Anna, a daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher.(J) She was well along in years, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage,[e](K) 37 and was a widow for eighty-four years.[f] She did not leave the temple, serving God night and day with fasting and prayers.(L) 38 At that very moment,[g] she came up and began to thank God and to speak about him to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.[h](M)
