Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
In the Shadow of Your Wings
A Prayer of David.
17 Hear a (A)righteous cause, O Yahweh, (B)give heed to my cry of lamentation;
(C)Give ear to my prayer, which is not from (D)deceitful lips.
2 May (E)my [a]judgment come from Your presence;
May Your eyes behold (F)what is upright.
3 You have (G)tested my heart;
You have visited me by night;
You have (H)tried me and (I)You find [b]nothing;
I have (J)purposed that my mouth will not [c]transgress.
4 As for the deeds of men, (K)by the word of Your lips
I have kept from the (L)paths of the violent.
5 My (M)steps have held fast to Your [d]paths.
My (N)footsteps have not stumbled.
6 I have (O)called upon You, for You will answer me, O God;
(P)Incline Your ear to me, hear my speech.
7 (Q)Marvelously show Your lovingkindnesses,
O (R)Savior of those who take refuge [e]at Your right hand
From those who rise up against them.
8 Keep me as [f]the (S)apple of the eye;
Hide me (T)in the shadow of Your wings
9 From the (U)wicked who devastate me,
My (V)deadly enemies who surround me.
10 They have (W)closed their [g]unfeeling heart,
With their mouth they (X)speak proudly.
11 They have now (Y)surrounded us in our steps;
They set their eyes (Z)to cast us down to the ground.
12 He is (AA)like a lion that is eager to tear,
And as a young lion (AB)lurking in hiding places.
13 (AC)Arise, O Yahweh, confront him, (AD)bring him low;
(AE)Protect my soul from the wicked with (AF)Your sword,
14 From men with (AG)Your hand, O Yahweh,
From men [h]of the world, (AH)whose portion is in this life,
And whose belly You (AI)fill with Your treasure;
They are satisfied with children,
And leave their excess to their infants.
15 As for me, I shall (AJ)behold Your face in righteousness;
(AK)I will be satisfied [i]with Your (AL)likeness when I awake.
The High Priest and a Branch
3 Then he showed me (A)Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of Yahweh, and [a](B)Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. 2 And Yahweh said to Satan, “(C)Yahweh rebuke you, Satan! Indeed, Yahweh who has (D)chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a (E)brand delivered from the fire?” 3 Now Joshua was clothed with (F)filthy garments and standing before the angel. 4 And he answered and spoke to those who were standing before him, saying, “(G)Remove the filthy garments from him.” Again he said to him, “See, I have (H)made your iniquity pass away from you and [b]will (I)clothe you with festal robes.” 5 Then I said, “Let them put a clean (J)turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments, while the angel of Yahweh was standing by.
6 And the angel of Yahweh testified to Joshua, saying, 7 “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, ‘If you will (K)walk in My ways and if you will keep the responsibility given by Me, then you will also (L)render justice in My house and also keep My (M)courts, and I will grant you [c]access to walk among these who are standing here. 8 Now listen, Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who are sitting in front of you—indeed they are men who are a (N)wondrous sign, for behold, I am going to bring in My servant the [d](O)Branch. 9 For behold, the stone that I have put before Joshua; on one stone are (P)seven eyes. Behold, I will engrave an inscription on it,’ declares Yahweh of hosts, ‘and I will (Q)remove the iniquity of that land in one day. 10 In that day,’ declares Yahweh of hosts, ‘every one of you will call for his neighbor to sit under his (R)vine and under his fig tree.’”
4 For (A)if God did not spare angels who sinned, but cast them into the [a]pit and (B)delivered them to chains of darkness, being kept for judgment; 5 and did not spare (C)the ancient world, but preserved (D)Noah, a [b]preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a (E)flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 and if He (F)condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an (G)example to those who would (H)live ungodly lives thereafter; 7 and if He (I)rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the (J)sensual conduct of (K)unprincipled men 8 (for by what he saw and heard that (L)righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), 9 (M)then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from [c]trial, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the (N)day of judgment, 10 and especially those who (O)go after the flesh in its corrupt lust and (P)despise authority.
Daring, (Q)self-willed, they do not tremble when they (R)blaspheme [d]glorious ones, 11 (S)whereas angels who are greater in strength and power do not bring a reviling judgment against them before the Lord. 12 But (T)these, like unreasoning animals, (U)born as creatures of instinct to be captured and killed, blaspheming where they have no knowledge, will in [e]the destruction of those creatures also be destroyed, 13 suffering unrighteousness as (V)the wages of their unrighteousness, considering it a pleasure to (W)revel in the (X)daytime—they are stains and blemishes, (Y)reveling in their [f]deceptions, as they (Z)feast with you, 14 having eyes full of adultery and unceasing sin, (AA)enticing (AB)unstable souls, having a heart trained in (AC)greed—they are (AD)accursed children. 15 Forsaking (AE)the right way, they have gone astray, having followed (AF)the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved (AG)the wages of unrighteousness, 16 but he received a rebuke for his own lawlessness, (AH)for a mute donkey, speaking out with a voice of a man, restrained the madness of the prophet.
17 These are (AI)springs without water and mists driven by a storm, (AJ)for whom the [g]black darkness has been kept. 18 For speaking out (AK)arrogant words of (AL)vanity, they (AM)entice by (AN)sensual lusts of the flesh, those who barely (AO)escape from the ones who conducted themselves in error, 19 promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for (AP)by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved. 20 For if they are overcome, having both (AQ)escaped the defilements of the world by (AR)the knowledge of the (AS)Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and having again been (AT)entangled in them, then (AU)the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 (AV)For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from (AW)the holy commandment (AX)handed on to them.
