Chapter 11

A Reign of Justice and Peace[a]

A shoot will spring forth from the stump of Jesse,
    and a branch will grow from his roots.
The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him:
    a Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
a Spirit of counsel and power,
    a Spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord,
    and his delight will be the fear of the Lord.
He will not judge by outward appearances
    or reach a verdict based on hearsay.
Rather, he will judge the poor with justice
    and render fair decisions for the weak and the poor.
He will strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth,
    and with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
Righteousness will be the belt around his waist
    and faithfulness the belt around his loins.
Then the wolf will live alongside the lamb,
    and the leopard will lie down with the kid;
the calf and the young lion will browse together,
    with a little child to guide them.
The cow and the bear will graze side by side;
    their young will lie down together,
    and the lion will eat hay like the ox.
The infant will play by the cobra’s den,
    and the young child will lay his hand
    on the viper’s nest.
No injury or harm will occur
    on all my holy mountain;
for the earth will be filled with knowledge of the Lord
    just as water covers the sea.

Micah 4:8-13

As for you, O tower of the flock,[a]
    hill of daughter Zion,
the promises made to you
    will be fulfilled,
and your former security will be restored,
    the sovereignty of daughter Jerusalem.

A Sorrowful Childbirth

Why are you now crying out?
    Have you no king any longer,
    or has your counselor perished,
that you are afflicted with pains
    like a woman in labor?
10 Writhe in pain and cry aloud,
    O daughter Zion,
    like a woman in labor.
For now you must go forth from the city
    and camp in the open country.
You will go to Babylon
    where you will be saved.
There the Lord will deliver you
    from the hands of your enemies.

The Nations Crush the Land of God

11 But now many nations
    are gathered against you.
They say, “Let her be profaned;
    let us gloat over Zion.”
12 However, they do not know
    the thoughts of the Lord
    or comprehend his plan.
For he has gathered them
    like sheaves on the threshing floor.
13 Arise and thresh,
    O daughter of Zion,
for I will make your horn like iron
    and your hooves like bronze
    so that you may crush many peoples.
You shall devote their ill-gotten gains to the Lord,
    their wealth to the Lord of the whole earth.

Luke 7:31-35

31 Indecisive Children.“Then to what shall I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to each other:

‘We played the flute for you,
    but you would not dance;
we sang a dirge,
    and you refused to mourn.’

33 “For John the Baptist has come, eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say: ‘He is possessed.’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say: ‘Look at him! He is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ 35 Yet wisdom is proved right by all her children.”
