Psalm 113

The Egyptian Hallel—Pss 113–118[a]

Psalm 113[b]

Praise of the Lord for His Care of the Lowly

Alleluia.

Praise, you servants of the Lord,[c]
praise the name of the Lord.
[d]Blessed be the name of the Lord
    now and forevermore.
From the rising of the sun to its setting
the name of the Lord is to be praised.
[e]High is the Lord over all the nations,
and supreme over the heavens is his glory.
Who is like the Lord, our God,
the one who is enthroned on high
and who stoops down to look
on the heavens and the earth?
[f]He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the rubbish heap,
seating them with princes,
with the princes of his people.
He settles the barren woman[g] in a home
and makes her the joyful mother of children.
Alleluia.

Genesis 24:1-10

Chapter 24

The Marriage of Isaac.[a] Abraham was now old, well advanced in years, and the Lord had blessed him in everything. Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household, who supervised his property, “Place your hand under my thigh[b] and swear to the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom we live. Rather, go to my homeland, to my family, and choose a wife for my son Isaac.”

The servant asked him, “If the woman does not wish to follow me to this land, should I take your son back to the land from which you came?”

Abraham answered him, “Never take my son back there! The Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, who called me out from the house of my father and the land of my birth, spoke to me and promised, ‘To your descendants I will give this land.’ He himself will send an angel before you so that you can find a wife for my son. If the woman does not wish to follow you, you will be absolved of the oath you have made to me. Only, you must not take my son back there.” The servant placed his hand under the thigh of Abraham, his master, and he swore an oath to him concerning these things.

10 The servant took ten of his master’s camels along with all kinds of different precious objects and he set out and went to Aram-naharaim,[c] to the city of Nahor.

1 Timothy 5:1-8

Specific Regulations for Various Groups[a]

Chapter 5

Different Age Groups.[b] Never speak harshly to an older man; rather, appeal to him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with the greatest purity.

Widows.[c] Give proper consideration to those widows who are truly in need. If a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to carry out their religious duty to their own family and repay their debt to their parents, for this is pleasing in the eyes of God.

However, a widow who is truly in need and is alone in the world places all her trust in God and never ceases her prayers and supplications night and day. But the widow who is interested solely in pleasure is dead even while she lives.

Insist upon these things, so that people may be beyond reproach. And whoever does not provide for relatives, especially for those who are living with him, has disowned the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
