Psalm 128

The Happy Home

A song ·for going up to worship [of ascents; C perhaps sung while traveling to Jerusalem to celebrate an annual religious festival like Passover].

128 ·Happy [Blessed] are those who ·respect [fear] the Lord [Prov. 1:7] and ·obey him [L walk in his ways].
You will ·enjoy what you work for [L eat the labor of your hands],
    and you will be ·blessed [happy] with ·good things [prosperity].
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine [C produce many children] in your house [Prov. 31:10–31].
    Your children will be like olive branches [C bringing much good] around your table [Mic. 4:4; Zech. 3:10].
This is how the man who ·respects [fears] the Lord [Prov. 1:7]
    will be blessed.
May the Lord bless you from Mount Zion [C the location of the Temple];
    may you ·enjoy [experience; L see] the ·good things [prosperity] of Jerusalem all the days of your life.
May you see your grandchildren.

Let there be peace in Israel.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-16

Friends and Family Give Strength

Two people are better than one,
    because they get ·more done by working together [L a good return for their hard work/toil].
10 If one falls down,
    the other can help ·him [L his colleague] up.
But it is ·bad [a pity] for the person who is alone and falls,
    because no one is there to help.
11 If two lie down together, they will be warm,
    but a person alone will not be warm.
12 ·An enemy [L Someone] might ·defeat [overpower] one person,
    but two people together can ·defend themselves [L stand up against them];
·a rope that is woven of three strings is hard to break [T a three-stranded cord does not quickly snap; C having a friend is good, having more friends is better].

Fame and Power Are Useless

13 A poor but wise ·boy [youth] is better than a foolish but old king who doesn’t listen to advice [Prov. 11:14; 15:22; 20:18; 24:6]. 14 The ·boy [youth] became king. He had been born poor in the kingdom and had even gone to prison before becoming king. 15 I ·watched [saw; observed] all the people who ·lived on earth [L walked under the sun; 1:3] follow ·him and make him their king [or the next youth who replaced the first youth/L him]. 16 ·Many followed him at first [L There was no end to all the people, to all those whom he led], but later, they did not like him, either. ·So fame and power are [L This is] useless [1:2], like chasing the wind.

James 5:1-6

A Warning to the Rich

You rich people, ·listen [L Come now; 4:13]! Cry [Weep] and be very sad because of the ·troubles [miseries] that are coming to you. Your riches have rotted, and your clothes have been eaten by moths. Your gold and silver have ·rusted [corroded], and that ·rust [corrosion] will be a ·proof that you were wrong [L witness/testimony/evidence against you]. It will eat your ·bodies [flesh] like fire. You ·saved [hoarded; stored up] your treasure ·for [or in] the last days [C just before judgment day, when such treasures will be useless]. [L Listen; T Behold] The ·pay [wages] you ·did not give [defrauded from] the workers who mowed your fields cries out against you [Lev. 19:13; Deut. 24:14–15], and the cries of the ·workers [L harvesters] have ·been heard by [L reached the ears of] the Lord ·All-Powerful [of Hosts/Armies; L Sabaoth; C God’s warrior name referring to the angelic army]. Your life on earth was full of ·rich living [luxury] and ·pleasing yourselves with everything you wanted [pleasure; self-indulgence]. You made ·yourselves [L your hearts] fat, ·like an animal ready to be killed [in/for a day of slaughter; C a farm animal gorging itself, unaware it is being fattened for slaughter]. You have ·judged guilty [condemned] and then murdered innocent people, who ·were not against [did not resist/oppose] you.
