Psalm 1

Two Ways to Live

Happy are those who don’t listen to the wicked,
who don’t go where sinners go,
who don’t do what evil people do.
They love the Lord’s teachings,
and they think about those teachings day and night.
They are strong, like a tree planted by a river.
The tree produces fruit in season,
    and its leaves don’t die.
Everything they do will succeed.

But wicked people are not like that.
They are like chaff that the wind blows away.
So the wicked will not escape God’s punishment.
Sinners will not worship with God’s people.
This is because the Lord takes care of his people,
but the wicked will be destroyed.

Proverbs 30:1-10

Wise Words from Agur

30 These are the words of Agur son of Jakeh.

This is his message to Ithiel and Ucal:

“I am the most stupid person there is,
    and I have no understanding.
I have not learned to be wise,
and I don’t know much about God, the Holy One.
Who has gone up to heaven and come back down?
Who can hold the wind in his hand?
Who can gather up the waters in his coat?
Who has set in place the ends of the earth?
What is his name or his son’s name?
    Tell me, if you know!

“Every word of God is true.
He guards those who come to him for safety.
Do not add to his words,
or he will correct you and prove you are a liar.

“I ask two things from you, Lord.
Don’t refuse me before I die.
Keep me from lying and being dishonest.
    And don’t make me either rich or poor;
just give me enough food for each day.
If I have too much, I might reject you
and say, ‘I don’t know the Lord.’
If I am poor, I might steal
and disgrace the name of my God.

10 “Do not say bad things about servants to their masters,
or they will curse you, and you will suffer for it.

1 Corinthians 2:1-5

The Message of Christ’s Death

Dear brothers and sisters, when I came to you, I did not come preaching God’s secret[a] with fancy words or a show of human wisdom. I decided that while I was with you I would forget about everything except Jesus Christ and his death on the cross. So when I came to you, I was weak and fearful and trembling. My teaching and preaching were not with words of human wisdom that persuade people but with proof of the power that the Spirit gives. This was so that your faith would be in God’s power and not in human wisdom.
