Psalm 73:1-20

Should the Wicked Be Rich?

A psalm of Asaph.

73 God is truly good to Israel,
    to those who have pure hearts.
But I had almost stopped believing;
    I had almost lost my faith
because I was jealous of proud people.
    I saw wicked people doing well.

They are not suffering;
    they are healthy and strong.
They don’t have troubles like the rest of us;
    they don’t have problems like other people.
They wear pride like a necklace
    and put on violence as their clothing.
They are looking for profits
    and do not control their selfish desires.
They make fun of others and speak evil;
    proudly they speak of hurting others.
They brag to the sky.
    They say that they own the earth.
10 So their people turn to them
    and give them whatever they want.
11 They say, “How can God know?
    What does God Most High know?”
12 These people are wicked,
    always at ease, and getting richer.
13 So why have I kept my heart pure?
    Why have I kept my hands from doing wrong?
14 I have suffered all day long;
    I have been punished every morning.

15 God, if I had decided to talk like this,
    I would have let your people down.
16 I tried to understand all this,
    but it was too hard for me to see
17 until I went to the Temple of God.
    Then I understood what will happen to them.
18 You have put them in danger;
    you cause them to be destroyed.
19 They are destroyed in a moment;
    they are swept away by terrors.
20 It will be like waking from a dream.
    Lord, when you rise up, they will disappear.

Proverbs 14:1-9

14 A wise woman strengthens her family,
    but a foolish woman destroys hers by what she does.

People who live good lives respect the Lord,
    but those who live evil lives don’t.

Fools will be punished for their proud words,
    but the words of the wise will protect them.

When there are no oxen, no food is in the barn.
    But with a strong ox, much grain can be grown.

A truthful witness does not lie,
    but a false witness tells nothing but lies.

Those who make fun of wisdom look for it and do not find it,
    but knowledge comes easily to those with understanding.

Stay away from fools,
    because they can’t teach you anything.

A wise person will understand what to do,
    but a foolish person is dishonest.

Fools don’t care if they sin,
    but honest people work at being right.

Matthew 17:14-21

Jesus Heals a Sick Boy

14 When Jesus and his followers came back to the crowd, a man came to Jesus and bowed before him. 15 The man said, “Lord, have mercy on my son. He has epilepsy[a] and is suffering very much, because he often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I brought him to your followers, but they could not cure him.”

17 Jesus answered, “You people have no faith, and your lives are all wrong. How long must I put up with you? How long must I continue to be patient with you? Bring the boy here.” 18 Jesus commanded the demon inside the boy. Then the demon came out, and the boy was healed from that time on.

19 The followers came to Jesus when he was alone and asked, “Why couldn’t we force the demon out?”

20 Jesus answered, “Because your faith is too small. I tell you the truth, if your faith is as big as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. All things will be possible for you. [ 21 That kind of spirit comes out only if you use prayer and fasting.]”[b]
