1 Kings 2:1-11

David’s Command to Solomon

Then David’s [a](A)time to die drew near, so he commanded Solomon his son, saying, (B)I am going the way of all the earth. (C)So you shall be strong, and be a man. And you shall keep the responsibility given by Yahweh your God, to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, (D)according to what is written in the Law of Moses, that (E)you may be prosperous in all that you do and wherever you turn, so that (F)Yahweh may establish His promise which He spoke concerning me, saying, ‘(G)If your sons keep their way, (H)to walk before Me in [b]truth with all their heart and with all their soul, He said, [c](I)you shall not have a man cut off from the throne of Israel.’

“Now you also know what Joab the (J)son of Zeruiah did to me, what he did to the two commanders of the armies of Israel, to (K)Abner the son of Ner, and to (L)Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed; he also [d]shed the blood of war in peace. And he put the blood of war on his belt [e]about his [f]waist, and on his sandals [g]on his feet. (M)So act according to your wisdom, and do not let his gray hair go down to Sheol in peace. But (N)show lovingkindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and (O)let them be among those who eat at your table; (P)for they [h]assisted me when I fled from Absalom your brother. Behold, (Q)there is with you Shimei the son of Gera the Benjamite, of Bahurim; now it was he who cursed me with a [i]violent curse on the day I went to Mahanaim. But when (R)he came down to me at the Jordan, I swore to him by Yahweh, saying, ‘I will not put you to death with the sword.’ So now, do not let him go unpunished, (S)for you are a wise man; and you will know what you ought to do to him, and you will bring his gray hair down to Sheol with blood.”

The Death of David

10 Then (T)David slept with his fathers and was buried in (U)the city of David. 11 (V)And the [j]time which David reigned over Israel was forty years; in Hebron he reigned (W)seven years and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years.

John 4:7-26

Jesus and the Samaritan Woman

A woman of Samaria *came to draw water. Jesus *said to her, “Give Me a drink.” For His (A)disciples had gone away into (B)the city to buy food. Therefore the (C)Samaritan woman *said to Him, “How do You, being a Jew, ask for a drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?” (For (D)Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you (E)living water.” 11 She *said to Him, “[a]Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where then do You get that (F)living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who (G)gave us this well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him (H)will never thirst—ever; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to (I)eternal life.”

15 The woman *said to Him, “[b]Sir, (J)give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come back here to draw.” 16 He *said to her, “Go, call your husband and come back here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.” 19 The woman *said to Him, “[c]Sir, I see that You are (K)a prophet. 20 (L)Our fathers worshiped on (M)this mountain, and you people say that (N)in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” 21 Jesus *said to her, “Woman, believe Me, (O)an hour is coming when (P)neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 (Q)You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for (R)salvation is from the Jews. 23 But (S)an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father (T)in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 God is [d]spirit, and those who worship Him must worship (U)in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman *said to Him, “I know that (V)Messiah is coming ((W)He who is called [e]Christ); when He comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26 Jesus *said to her, (X)I who speak to you am He.”
