Psalm 99

Worship at His Holy Hill

Psalm 99

Adonai reigns, let the peoples tremble.
He is enthroned upon the cheruvim—let the earth shake!
Adonai is great in Zion
and He is exalted above all the peoples.
Let them praise Your great
and awesome Name: holy is He.
The might of a king loves justice.
You have established fairness.
You executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.
Exalt Adonai our God
and worship at His footstool: holy is He.

Moses and Aaron were among His kohanim
also Samuel among those calling on His Name.
They called on Adonai and He answered them.
He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud.
They kept His testimonies, and the decree that He gave them.
Adonai our God, You answered them.
A forgiving God You were to them, though You avenged their misdeeds.
Exalt Adonai our God,
and worship at His holy hill,
for holy is Adonai our God.

1 Samuel 2:11-17

Eli’s Sons Sin Against Adonai

11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, while the boy served Adonai before Eli the kohen.

12 Now Eli’s sons were worthless men[a]; they did not acknowledge Adonai. 13 Now this was the custom of the kohanim with the people: whenever any man offered a sacrifice, the kohen’s servant would come along, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand, 14 and he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron or pot. Whatever the fork brought up, the kohen would take for himself. This is how they dealt with all the Israelites who came there to Shiloh. 15 Even before they burned the fat, the kohen’s servant would come and say to the one offering sacrifice, “Give the kohen meat for roasting, since he will not accept boiled meat from you—only raw.”

16 If the man said to him, “Let them first burn the fat up as smoke, and then take as much as you desire,” he would reply, “No! But you must give it now—otherwise, I will take it by force.” 17 Thus the sin of the young men was very great before Adonai, for the men despised the offering of Adonai.

Romans 9:19-29

19 You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?” 20 But who in the world are you, O man, who talks back to God? Will what is formed say to the one who formed it, “Why did you make me like this?” [a] 21 Does the potter have no right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honor and another for common use? 22 Now what if God, willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath designed for destruction? 23 And what if He did so to make known the riches of His glory on vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory?

24 Even us He called—not only from the Jewish people, but also from the Gentiles— 25 as He says also in Hosea,

“I will call those who were not My people,
    ‘My people,’
and her who was not loved,
    ‘Beloved.’
26 And it shall be that in the place where it was said to them,
    ‘You are not My people,’
there they shall be called sons of the living God.”[b]

27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel,

“Though the number of B’nei-Israel be as the sand of the sea,
only the remnant shall be saved.
28 For Adonai will carry out His word upon the earth,
bringing it to an end and finishing quickly.”[c]

29 And just as Isaiah foretold,

“Unless Adonai-Tzva’ot had left us seed,
we would have become like Sodom and
    resembled Gomorrah.”[d]
