⁴ You hold my eyelids open;
I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
⁵ I have considered the days of old,
The years of ancient times.
⁶ I call to remembrance my song in the night;
I meditate within my heart,
And my spirit ^[a]makes diligent search.

⁷ Will the Lord cast off forever?
And will He be favorable no more?
⁸ Has His mercy ceased forever?
Has His ^(B)promise failed ^[b]forevermore?
⁹ Has God forgotten to be gracious?
Has He in anger shut up His tender mercies? Selah

¹⁰ And I said, “This is my ^[c]anguish;
But I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High.”
¹¹ I will remember the works of the Lord;
Surely I will remember Your wonders of old.
¹² I will also meditate on all Your work,
And talk of Your deeds.
¹³ Your way, O God, is in ^[d]the ^(C)sanctuary;
Who is so great a God as our God?
¹⁴ You are the God who does wonders;
You have declared Your strength among the peoples.
¹⁵ You have with Your arm redeemed Your people,
The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

¹⁶ The waters saw You, O God;
The waters saw You, they were ^(D)afraid;
The depths also trembled.
¹⁷ The clouds poured out water;
The skies sent out a sound;
Your arrows also flashed about.
¹⁸ The voice of Your thunder was in the whirlwind;
The lightnings lit up the world;
The earth trembled and shook.
¹⁹ Your way was in the sea,
Your path in the great waters,
And Your footsteps were not known.
²⁰ You led Your people like a flock
By the hand of Moses and Aaron.

⁸ “But as for me, I would seek God,
And to God I would commit my cause—
⁹ Who does great things, and unsearchable,
Marvelous things without number.
^10 (A)He gives rain on the earth,
And sends waters on the fields.
^11 (B)He sets on high those who are lowly,
And those who mourn are lifted to safety.
^12 (C)He frustrates the devices of the crafty,
So that their hands cannot carry out their plans.
¹³ He catches the ^(D)wise in their own craftiness,
And the counsel of the cunning comes quickly upon them.
¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the daytime,
And grope at noontime as in the night.
¹⁵ But ^(E)He saves the needy from the sword,
From the mouth of the mighty,
And from their hand.
^16 (F)So the poor have hope,
And injustice shuts her mouth.

¹⁷ “Behold,^(G) happy is the man whom God corrects;
Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty.
^18 (H)For He bruises, but He binds up;
He wounds, but His hands make whole.
^19 (I)He shall deliver you in six troubles,
Yes, in seven ^(J)no evil shall touch you.
^20 (K)In famine He shall redeem you from death,
And in war from the ^[a]power of the sword.
^21 (L)You shall be hidden from the scourge of the tongue,
And you shall not be afraid of destruction when it comes.
²² You shall laugh at destruction and famine,
And ^(M)you shall not be afraid of the ^(N)beasts of the earth.
^23 (O)For you shall have a covenant with the stones of the field,
And the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you.
²⁴ You shall know that your tent is in peace;
You shall visit your dwelling and find nothing amiss.
²⁵ You shall also know that ^(P)your descendants shall be many,
And your offspring ^(Q)like the grass of the earth.
^26 (R)You shall come to the grave at a full age,
As a sheaf of grain ripens in its season.
²⁷ Behold, this we have ^(S)searched out;
It is true.
Hear it, and know for yourself.”

^(D)“He who would love life
And see good days,
^(E)Let him ^[b]refrain his tongue from evil,
And his lips from speaking deceit.
¹¹ Let him ^(F)turn away from evil and do good;
^(G)Let him seek peace and pursue it.
¹² For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
^(H)And His ears are open to their prayers;
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
