Psalm 27

A Song of Trust in God

Of David.

27 The Lord is my light [18:28; 43:3; Is. 9:2; John 1:4, 9; 8:12; 1 John 1:5] and ·the one who saves me [my salvation].
    ·So why should I fear anyone [L Whom should I fear]?
The Lord ·protects [L is the stronghold/refuge of] my life.
    ·So why [L Of whom] should I be afraid?
Evil people may try to ·destroy my body [L approach me and devour/consume my flesh].
    My enemies and those who hate me ·are overwhelmed and defeated [L stumble and fall].
If an army ·surrounds [L camps around] me,
    ·I [L my heart] will not be afraid.
If war ·breaks out [rises against me],
    I will ·trust [have confidence in] ·the Lord [L in this; Rom. 8:31–39].

I ask only one thing from the Lord.
    This is what I ·want [L seek after]:
Let me ·live [dwell] in the Lord’s house [C the sanctuary]
    all the days of my life.
Let me see the Lord’s beauty
    and ·look with my own eyes [L make inquiry; C discover God’s will] at his Temple.
·During danger [L In the day of trouble] he will ·keep me safe [L hide me] in his shelter.
    He will ·hide [conceal] me in his Holy Tent,
    or he will ·keep me safe [L set me high] on a ·high mountain [L rock].
My head is higher than my enemies around me.
I will offer joyful sacrifices in his Holy Tent [C the Tabernacle].
I will sing and praise the Lord.

Lord, hear ·me [L my voice] when I ·call [pray];
    have mercy and answer me.
My heart said of you, “Go, ·worship him [L seek his face].”
    So I ·come to worship you [L seek your face], Lord.
Do not ·turn away [L hide your face] from me.
    Do not turn your servant away in anger;
    you have helped me.
Do not push me away or ·leave me alone [abandon me],
    God, my Savior.
10 If my father and mother ·leave [abandon] me,
    the Lord will take me in.
11 Lord, teach me your ways,
    and guide me ·to do what is right [L on a straight/right path]
    because ·I have [L of my] enemies.
12 Do not hand me over to my enemies,
    because ·they tell lies about [L false witnesses rise up against] me [Ex. 20:16]
and ·say they will hurt me [L they breathe out violence].

13 I truly believe
    I will see the Lord’s goodness ·during my life [L in the land of the living].
14 ·Wait for [Hope in] the Lord’s help.
    Be strong and let your heart be brave,
and ·wait for [hope in] the Lord’s help.

Isaiah 26:7-15

The ·path [way] of life is level for ·those who are right with God [the righteous];
    ·Lord [or Upright One], you make the way of life ·smooth [straight; level] for those people.
But, Lord, we are waiting
    ·for your [or in the] ·way of justice [or path/way of your judgments].
Our souls ·want to remember [or desire; or wish to see glorified]
    ·you [your renown; your remembrance] and your name.
My soul ·wants to be with [longs/yearns for] you at night,
    and my spirit ·wants to be with [seeks; longs for] you ·at the dawn of every day [in the morning].
When your ·way of justice [judgment] comes to the ·land [earth],
    ·people [the inhabitants] of the world will learn ·the right way of living [righteousness; justice].
10 Evil people will not learn ·to do good [righteousness; justice]
    even if you show them ·kindness [mercy; grace].
They will continue ·doing evil [acting unjustly], even if they live in a ·good world [land of uprightness];
    they never see the Lord’s ·greatness [majesty].
11 Lord, ·you are ready to punish those people [L your hand is lifted up; C ready to strike],
    but they do not see that.
·Show them your strong love for your people [L They will see your zeal for your people; or They will see your zealous judgment against mankind].
    ·Then those who are evil [L …and they] will be ashamed.
·Burn [Consume] them in the fire
    ·you have prepared for [L of] your ·enemies [adversaries].
12 Lord, all our ·success is [accomplishments/works are] because of what you have done,
    ·so give us peace [or and you give us peace/security].
13 Lord, our God, other masters besides you have ruled us,
    but we ·honor [praise; remember] only ·you [L your name].
14 ·Those masters are now dead [L They are dead, never to live];
    their ·ghosts [spirits] will not rise from death.
You punished and destroyed them
    and erased any memory of them.
15 Lord, you ·multiplied the number of your people [enlarged/made great the nation];
    you ·multiplied them [enlarged/made great the nation] and brought ·honor [glory] to yourself.
You ·widened [enlarged; extended] the borders of the land.

Acts 2:37-42

37 When the people heard this, they ·felt guilty [were deeply distressed; L were cut/pierced to the heart] and asked Peter and the other apostles, “What shall we do, ·brothers [L men, brothers]?”

38 Peter said to them, “·Change your hearts and lives [Repent] and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 [L For] This promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away [C both in space and time; may refer to Gentiles and/or Jews scattered outside the land of Israel]. It is for everyone the Lord our God calls to himself [Joel 2:32].”

40 Peter ·warned [testified to] them with many other ·words [arguments]. He ·begged [pleaded with; exhorted; urged] them, “Save yourselves from ·the evil of today’s people [L this corrupt/crooked/perverse generation]!” 41 Then those people who accepted what Peter said were baptized. About three thousand ·people [souls] were added to the number of believers that day. 42 They ·spent [devoted] their time learning the apostles’ teaching, ·sharing [fellowship], breaking bread [C this may refer to a meal as in v. 46, or to the Lord’s Supper; Luke 22:14–20], and praying together.
