Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 142[a]
A well-written song[b] by David, when he was in the cave;[c] a prayer.
142 To the Lord I cry out;[d]
to the Lord I plead for mercy.[e]
2 I pour out my lament before him;
I tell him about[f] my troubles.
3 Even when my strength leaves me,[g]
you watch my footsteps.[h]
In the path where I walk
they have hidden a trap for me.
4 Look to the right and see.
No one cares about me.[i]
I have nowhere to run;[j]
no one is concerned about my life.[k]
5 I cry out to you, O Lord;
I say, “You are my shelter,
my security[l] in the land of the living.”
6 Listen to my cry for help,
for I am in serious trouble.[m]
Rescue me from those who chase me,
for they are stronger than I am.
7 Free me[n] from prison,
that I may give thanks to your name.
Because of me the godly will assemble,[o]
for you will vindicate me.[p]
The Coming Day of the Lord
15 “For the day of the Lord[a] is approaching[b] for all the nations![c]
Just as you have done, so it will be done to you.
You will get exactly what your deeds deserve.[d]
16 For just as you[e] have drunk[f] on my holy mountain,
so all the nations will drink continually.[g]
They will drink, and they will gulp down;
they will be as though they had never been.
17 But on Mount Zion there will be a remnant of those who escape,[h]
and it will be a holy place once again.
The descendants[i] of Jacob will conquer[j]
those who had conquered them.[k]
18 The descendants of Jacob will be a fire,
and the descendants of Joseph a flame.
The descendants of Esau will be like stubble.
They will burn them up and devour them.
There will not be a single survivor[l] of the descendants of Esau!”
Indeed, the Lord has spoken it.
19 The people of the Negev[m] will take possession[n] of Esau’s mountain,
and the people of the foothills[o] will take
possession[p] of the land of[q] the Philistines.
They will also take possession of the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria,
and the people of Benjamin will take possession[r] of Gilead.[s]
20 The exiles of this fortress[t] of the people of Israel
will take possession[u] of what belongs to
the people of Canaan, as far as Zarephath,[v]
and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad[w]
will take possession of the towns of the Negev.
21 Those who have been delivered[x] will go up on Mount Zion
in order to rule over[y] Esau’s mountain.
Then the Lord will reign as King![z]
10 Then[a] the disciples came to him and said, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” 11 He replied,[b] “You have been given[c] the opportunity to know[d] the secrets[e] of the kingdom of heaven, but they have not. 12 For whoever has will be given more, and will have an abundance. But whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.[f] 13 For this reason I speak to them in parables: Although they see they do not see, and although they hear they do not hear nor do they understand. 14 And concerning them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says:
‘You will listen carefully[g] yet will never understand,
you will look closely[h] yet will never comprehend.
15 For the heart of this people has become dull;
they are hard of hearing,
and they have shut their eyes,
so that they would not see with their eyes
and hear with their ears
and understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’[i]
16 “But your eyes are blessed[j] because they see, and your ears because they hear. 17 For I tell you the truth,[k] many prophets and righteous people longed to see[l] what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.
