Psalm 8

The Lord’s Greatness

For the director of music. On the gittith [C perhaps a musical term or instrument]. A psalm of David.

Lord our Lord,
·Your name is the most wonderful name [L How majestic is your name] in all the earth [Ex. 3:14–15]!
·It brings you praise [L You have set your splendor/glory] in heaven above [Rom. 1:20].
·You have taught children and babies
to sing praises to you [L Out of the mouth of babies and infants you have established/founded strength]
    because of your enemies.
And so you silence your enemies
and those who try to get ·even [revenge].

I look at your heavens,
·which you made with [L the work of] your fingers.
I see the moon and stars,
    which you ·created [L established; Gen. 1:17–18].
·But why are people even important to you [L What are people that you remember them]?
Why do you take care of ·human beings [L the son of man]?
You made them a little lower than ·the angels [or God]
and crowned them with glory and honor [Gen. 1:26–27].
You ·put them in charge of [give them rule over] ·everything you made [L the work of your hands].
You put all things under their ·control [L feet; Heb. 2:6–8]:
all the sheep, the cattle,
and the ·wild animals [L beasts of the field],
the birds in the ·sky [heavens],
    the fish in the sea,
and everything that ·lives under water [L passes/travels on the paths of the sea; Gen. 1:28; 9:1–3].

Lord our Lord,
·your name is the most wonderful [L how majestic is your] name in all the earth!

Job 38:1-11

The Lord Questions Job

38 Then the Lord answered Job from the ·storm [whirlwind; 9:17]. He said:

“Who is this that makes my ·purpose [L counsel; advice] ·unclear [L dark]
·by saying things that are not true [L with ignorant words]?
·Be strong [Brace yourself; L Gird your loins] like a man!
    I will ask you questions,
and you must ·answer [inform] me.
Where were you when I made the earth’s foundation?
    Tell me, if you understand.
Who marked off ·how big it should be [L its measurements]? Surely you know!
Who stretched a ·ruler [line; C surveyor’s instrument] across it?
What were the earth’s foundations ·set on [L sunk in],
or who put its cornerstone in place
while the morning stars sang together
and all the ·angels [L sons of god] shouted with joy?

“Who shut the doors to keep the sea in
when it broke through ·and was born [L coming out of the womb],
when I made the clouds like a coat for the sea
and ·wrapped [swaddled] it in dark clouds,
10 when I ·put [prescribed] ·limits [boundaries] on the sea
and put its doors and bars in place,
11 when I said to the sea, ‘You may come this far, but no farther;
this is where your proud waves must stop’?

2 Timothy 1:8-12

So do not be ashamed to ·tell people [testify; bear witness] about our Lord, and do not be ashamed of me, ·in prison for the Lord [L his prisoner; C Paul was in prison in Rome for a second time and would soon be executed]. But suffer with me for the ·Good News [Gospel]. God, who gives us the strength to do that, saved us and ·made us his holy people [L called us to a holy calling]. That was not because of anything we did ourselves but because of ·God’s [L his own] purpose and grace. That grace was given to us through Christ Jesus before ·time began [L eternal times], 10 but it is now ·shown [revealed; manifested] to us by the ·coming [appearing; manifestation] of our Savior Christ Jesus. He ·destroyed [broke the power of; abolished] death, and through the ·Good News [Gospel] he ·showed us the way to have [L illuminated; brought to light] ·life that cannot be destroyed [immortal life; L life and immortality]. 11 I was ·chosen [appointed] ·to tell that Good News [L a preacher/herald] and to be an apostle and a teacher. 12 I am suffering now ·because I tell the Good News [L for this reason], but I am not ashamed, because I know the One in whom I have ·believed [put my trust/faith]. And I am ·sure [convinced; confident] he is able to ·protect [guard; keep safe] what ·he has trusted me with [or I have entrusted with him; L my deposit/entrustment] until that day [C the final day of judgment and reward].
