14 Peter Preaches in the Name of the Twelve.[a] Then Peter stood up with the Eleven and proclaimed to them in a loud voice, “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen carefully to my words.
36 “Therefore, let the whole house of Israel know with complete certitude that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and Christ.”
37 When they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and to the other apostles, “What are we to do, brethren?” 38 Peter answered, “Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise that was made is for you, for your children, and for all those who are far away, for all those whom the Lord our God will call.”
40 Life of the First Community—I.[a] He offered further testimony with many other arguments as he exhorted them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and on that day about three thousand people were added to their number.

Thanksgiving to God for Help Received
1 I love the Lord because he has heard my voice
and listened to my cry for mercy,[b]
2 because he has inclined his ear to me
on the day when I called out to him.[c]
3 The bonds of death[d] encompassed me;
the snares of the netherworld held me tightly.
I was seized by distress and sorrow.
4 Then I cried out in the name[e] of the Lord:
“O Lord, I entreat you to preserve my life.”
12 How can I repay the Lord
for all the good he has done for me?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation[a]
and call on the name of the Lord.
14 I will fulfill my vows[b] to the Lord
in the presence of his people.
15 Precious in the eyes of the Lord
is the death[c] of his faithful ones.
16 O Lord, I am your servant.
I am your servant, the child of your handmaid;[d]
you have loosed my bonds.
17 I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts of the house of the Lord,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.

17 If you address as Father the one who judges everyone impartially on the basis of each person’s deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile here. 18 For you are aware that you were ransomed from your futile way of life inherited from your ancestors not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ,[a] a lamb without blemish or defect.
20 He was chosen before the foundation of the world, but in this final age he has been revealed for your sake. 21 Through him you have come to believe in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and your hope are fixed on God.
22 Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to truth so that you have genuine love for your brethren, love one another intensely with all your heart. 23 You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God.[b]
13 Jesus Appears to Two Disciples at Emmaus.[a] Now that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had occurred. 15 While they were conversing and discussing these events, Jesus himself drew near and walked along with them, 16 but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
17 He asked them, “What are you discussing with each other as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces filled with sadness. 18 Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who is not aware of all the things that have taken place there in these days?” 19 When he asked, “What things?” they replied, “The things that happened to Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet powerful in word and deed before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death and had him crucified.
21 “We had been hoping that he would be the one who would redeem Israel. And what is more, this is the third day since all of this took place. 22 Some women from our group have now given us astounding news. They went to the tomb early this morning, 23 but they failed to find his body. When they returned, they told us that they had seen a vision of angels who reported that he was alive. 24 Some of our companions went to the tomb and found everything exactly as the women had said, but they did not see him.”
25 Then he said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the Prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 Then, beginning with Moses and going through all the Prophets, he interpreted for them all the passages from the Scriptures that pertained to him.
28 As they approached the village to which they were going, he acted as though he would be going further. 29 However, they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” And so he went in to stay with them.
30 When he was at table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
33 They set out immediately and returned to Jerusalem, where they found gathered together the Eleven and their companions 34 who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised, and he has appeared to Simon!”[b] 35 Then the two described what had happened on their journey and how he had made himself known to them in the breaking of the bread.
